We were near the mountaintop of Tupendo when a rock got moved and hit my lower leg halfway between ankle and knee. The impact cut through both bones and removed a big chunk (块) of my leg. I found myself hanging from a rope,1,600m off the ground, in sharp pain. I was afraid it might just drop off.
After binding it to an ice- axe, my climbing partner abseiled down (缘绳下降) to get help. For two days I lay alone. My leg started to smell pretty bad.
It took six days to get me off the mountain and to a hospital in northern India. The hospital was basic and the next day I was flown to Delhi for emergency surgery and then, when stable enough, back home. In the UK, after nine operations, my doctor recommended an amputation (截肢) if I wanted to be able to walk properly again.
I was very sad. I had been competing in sport since I was a teenager. My physical fitness and love of running felt as if they were an inseparable part of the person I was. I visited a center specializing in prostheses and the consultant there seemed terribly enthusiastic about my prospects as an amputee, telling me I would be walking within six months and maybe even playing football after a year. I found the experience too depressing for words and was determined to put off the decision for as long as possible.
Every night I had the same dream: I would be hobbling along a grassy path using my crutches (拐杖) and then, suddenly, I would lift them up and throw them in the river and I’d start walking, and then running, as if there had never been anything wrong. When I woke it would take me a few seconds to remember.

In April last year, sitting in the back of the car, my two daughters, Nia, 10 and Robyn, 8, chatted away about the latest electronic devices. “Mum, can I get a new phone for my birthday?” Nia asked. “No, love,” I replied. “Can we go to a theme park this year?” Robyn asked. “That’s very expensive,” I said. Disappointment entered our car like a dark cloud, putting an end to the chat.
Arriving home, I switched on my laptop, went through pictures taken in Uganda (乌干达). A few months before, I’d been there, working with local schools. As an officer for Teams4u, a charity that provides resources to people in need, I’d seen what life was like there. I went there twice a year and loved it. “You must bring your family next time,” one of the local teachers had said to me. My girls had never been out to Africa with me before, but were always wide-eyed as I told my adventures.
Life in Uganda was very different from what we were used to. Children there had little to eat for lunch. There were no proper desks and chairs in the classroom. I’d been out there to help, but there was still a lot of work to do in some remote schools.
During dinner, Nia asked me, “Mum, can we dine out?” “Homemade food is boring,” Robyn complained. I didn’t say a word.
That night in bed, I thought about the invitation from the teacher in Uganda. By the following morning, I’d made my decision. “Girls, we’re going to Uganda! For Two weeks!” I announced. Nia and Robyn were surprised at first but soon became excited! Uganda wasn’t a theme park, but it was an adventure anyway.
So, a few weeks later, in May last year, we landed in the capital city of Kampala. That night, we all slept under mosquito nets (蚊帐) in the blazing (燃烧的) heat --- we were worlds away from home.

Angela was Julia’s big sister. One Christmas, Angela received an amazing gift from their dear grandpa. It was a beautiful necklace, with a small heart on a shining, golden chain. Julia also received a lovely gift from their grandpa and liked it. But deep in her heart, she preferred the one their grandpa gave to Angela.
Angela and Grandpa could clearly see how much Julia wanted such a necklace. Thus, Grandpa secretly decided to send Julia that type of necklace the next Christmas. However, he never had the chance to do that. Just several days later, this 86-year-old mar passed away due to a heart attack. The death of the old man made all his family sad, especially the youngest one, Julia, who used to be very close to her grandpa. She only felt better months later.
As the days went on, Christmas was approaching. The two girls’ grandma had loved this holiday very much, and he had always given both of them a special surprise on Christmas Day. Since he was gone, the girls would never receive a surprising gift from him. Fearing Julia would be sad on Christmas morning, Angela decided to give Julia a gift to cheer her up. Then, secretly, Angela prepared one. She carefully put the gift inside a beautiful small box and wished Julia would love it.
Finally, Christmas came. On Christmas morning, Angela whispered to Julia, “Wakey, wakey, sleepyhead. It’s time for us to open the gifts.” Hearing the words, Julia was immediately awake. It was 7:00 am. Julia thought she would have been awake earlier. After all, it was Christmas morning.
Then, the two sisters walked down the hall as quickly and quietly as they could, while their parents were still sleeping peacefully. Julia had been waiting for this day for weeks, marking off the days on her calendar as they passed. She wanted to open her presents.

John was a highway patrol trooper (巡逻警察) responsible for ensuring traffic safety on T Highway. One afternoon in July, there was a heavy rainstorm. While driving through the busiest part of the highway during the downpour, he noticed that traffic was beginning to slow down ahead of him, with some cars coming to a stop and veering (转向) into another lane.
John initially thought there had been a car accident, so he reduced his speed to take a closer look. However, he quickly discovered that the real cause of the hold-up was an animal wandering on the wet road. As he got nearer, he realized it was a dog. There was a large dog that looked like a brown German shepherd (牧羊犬) in the middle lane.
The weather conditions were terrible, with a gray sky and heavy rain reducing visibility on the highway. This delay could lead to a traffic jam, and it was certainly very dangerous to have the dog wandering in the middle of the road.
He immediately turned on his blue lights because people usually slow down when they see the blue lights and called into the radio so they knew where he was. He pulled over, got out, and whistled to draw the dog’s attention.
It seemed as if the dog knew John was its lifesaver. It walked to John and his car. Once the dog was in the car, John pulled into a parking lot nearby, where he called Petworks Animal Service. While waiting, he noticed the dog wearing a collar with its name “Marley”. John recorded a short video of the dog.
Then an animal control officer came and took Marley to the shelter. John came back to work. Watching cars travelling on the highway through the window glass, he thought he might do something to let the dog’s owner know the pet was found safe.
After work, John posted the video online with a brief description attached.

After seeing a program on television about a reporter who had hitchhiked (搭顺风车)across America, my ten-year-old daughter, Ashley said, “I wish I could do that!” Ashley was diagnosed with cancer three years earlier. Although she is cancer-free now after a surgery, numerous tests and the scary procedure of treatments had made her unwilling to risk outside her known world. So I wanted to encourage that spirit of adventure in her.
I began trying to think of a way for her to “hitchhike” across the country without leaving home. That’s how Carmen was born. Carmen is a teddy bear Ashley had received while she was in the hospital. We decided to send Carmen in Ashley’s place. So we purchased a notebook as a travel journal and a bag for Carmen to travel in, together with a letter written by Ashley:
My name is Ashley and I am ten years old. This is my bear, Carmen. I got her when I was in the hospital. She wants to go to all fifty states just like the reporter guy on TV who hitchhiked across America. But she can’t walk, so will you please help her? Could you let her ride with you and keep her safe, as well as tell her about yourself so she won’t be lonely?
Please write a little about yourself in the journal and then introduce her to someone new. She wants to meet as many new people as she can. I think by about September she will be ready to come home. In her coin purse is $5. 00. Please put her in a box with her journal and send her to Sac City State Bank. Attention: Caretaker of Carmen Bear. If you would like to hear from Carmen after she gets home, please leave your address in her notebook and we will send you a note and let you know when she gets home safely.
Thank you for taking care of Carmen, and thank you for taking the time to write in her notebook.
Your new friends,
Carmen and Ashley

On my twelfth birthday, my mother handed me a square box, saying it was something I had wanted for a long time. Excitedly, I opened it to find a fluffy, white puppy (小狗) inside. Overjoyed, I named her Snowball. I started to train Snowball right away, having her walk by my side on a leash (拴狗的皮带). I decided to take her for a short walk down a nearby, quiet lane.
As we turned into the lane, we saw an old woman in her yard. She noticed my new dog and introduced herself as Alice, approaching us while dragging an aluminum canister (铝罐) on wheels. Sitting near her gate, she explained that the machine helped her breathe. I tried not to stare.
“What is this little one’s name?” she asked.
I picked up my puppy and placed her on Alice’s lap. “Her name is Snowball and mine is Jamie,” I replied. “I just got her for my birthday today!”
“It’s very nice to meet you, Jamie and Snowball, and a very Happy Birthday to you,” Alice said. Soon Alice had lost herself, snuggling (依偎) with Snowball. With Alice’s eyes closed, I felt it was okay to study her breathing machine. It reminded me of something out of a science fiction book. When I looked back at Alice, I saw her petting the calm dog and softly singing to her. As I watched, I saw tears roll slowly down Alice’s cheeks.
I asked what was wrong, and she explained that holding my dog reminded her of the dog she had years ago. She then returned my dog, expressing her love for little dogs and hoping we would visit again. However, I thought to myself that I wouldn’t return, not wanting to see her with her scary breathing machine.

In the distant and mysterious star continent, there is a young man named Bruce. He has a pair of eyes that can see the mysteries of the stars, and a heart that never gives up. Bruce lives in a small, quiet village where people make a living by farming and pastoraling, and know little about the mysteries of the starry sky. However, Bruce is always looking up at the stars, and his heart is full of longing for the unknown.
One day, a shooting star streaked across the sky and landed in Bruce’s backyard. Bruce walked over curiously and found that it was actually a strange shaped meteorite, which was engraved with ancient runes. He gently touched the meteorite, suddenly a powerful energy poured into his body, his eyes emerged a series of strange pictures: stars twinkling, the vast universe, mysterious creatures shuttling between the stars...
“It’s the power of the stars!” An old and mysterious voice sounded in Bruce’s ear, “You have been chosen to become the guardian of the star continent. You need to find the scattered pieces of the stars to unlock the power of the stars and protect the peace of the continent.”
Bruce was shocked by this sudden responsibility and mission, but he did not flinch. He says goodbye to his family and embarks on an adventure to find the shards of stars.
During the journey, Bruce encountered various challenges and difficulties. Sometimes he has to navigate dangerous forests, sometimes he has to solve complex puzzles, and sometimes he has to fight against evil forces. However, he never gave up, because he knew that only by finding all the pieces of the stars could he unlock the power of the stars and protect his beloved home.
After countless times of sharpening and experience, Bruce has gradually grown into a brave, wise and responsible young man. He not only found many fragments of stars, but also made a group of like-minded friends. They fought side by side and faced various challenges and difficulties together.

Can harmed relations restore like holes in the fence?
Matt was a nice enough guy. He enjoyed his friends and family and, mostly, they enjoyed him. I say “mostly” because sometimes Matt could get really angry. If things didn’t go quite his way, he could shout and scream at people. His mom and dad had long said things like, “You’d better learn to control that temper, young man, or one day you will get into real trouble.” Now Matt was noticing that some of his friends at school tended to be avoiding him more and more.
This worried Matt. He liked his friends. He didn’t want to lose them but he didn’t know what to do about it. Try as he might, at times things would build up like a volcano until he erupted. Matt felt it was outside his control. What could he do?
One Saturday morning his dad came home from the hardware store and said, “Matt, I’ve got a present for you.” Out of the shopping bag he pulled a brand-new hammer and bag of big, shiny nails.
He got an old can and tipped the nails into the empty container. Handing Matt the brand-new hammer and can of nails, he said, “Every time you get angry, go outside and hammer a nail into the wooden fence that runs down the side of the house.”
At first, Matt thought his old man must be going crazy or something. But he had tried everything else, why not do what his father had said?
Each time he got angry at home he went and hammered a nail in the side fence. If he got angry at school he’d remember how many times he’d lost his temper and as soon as he got home he’d go and hammer the appropriate number of nails into the fence.
Soon Matt found the task of hammering the nails in got boring. He didn’t like having to keep track of all the times he got angry and pound (敲击) in a few more nails. Surprisingly, Matt found that he was getting less and less angry. It was easier, in fact, to control his temper than to remember the times he hadn’t, then go and hammer another nail in the fence.

Brittany Reed was having the kind of day described in the Francesca Battistelli song, ‘This Is The Stuff’. One of those days things just kept going wrong. However, Wyatt Jones, a teenager working at McDonald’s, used stressful moments to do amazing things.
Brittany Reed was tired and stressed as she left football practice with all 3 of her kids in tow. Her 4-year-old son was odd and crying and her 7-year-old soon joined in, too. With everyone worn out from the busy day, Ohio mom Brittany decided to grab dinner from McDonald’s on their way home. Wyatt Jones was the teenager working at McDonald’s who took her order that day.
As Brittany pulled up to the drive-through window after placing her order to pay, all 3 of her kids were “now crying for one reason or the other.” And that’s when it hit Brittany. She’d left her purse at home.
“Well, now I wanted to cry,” she recalled. “I looked at the young man with tears in my eyes just from being stressed and annoyed and said, ‘I am so sorry but I have to cancel that order. I left my purse at home when we went to football tonight’.” Without hesitation and before Brittany could argue, Wyatt pulled out his wallet, swiped his card (刷卡), and paid for the stressed mom’s meal.
As a teenager working at McDonald’s, Wyatt probably didn’t make much. Yet, he firmly declined all of Brittany’s promises to return to the restaurant and pay him back. The young man thought nothing of his act of kindness. To him, it was no big deal. But to Brittany, it meant the world. Brittany realized that it is what we moms are trying to do—raise great humans, and was firmly convinced that this is just the kind of hope our world needs right now. So she was determined to find a way to say thank you and let him know that when you put good out in the world it comes back to you tenfold.

Since that day in his geometry class, I have changed a lot. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】I walked to the blackboard for the first time and showed my proof to the class. My heart was pounding as I explained my reasoning, but Mr. Dalton's reassuring smile gave me the confidence to continue. As I finished my explanation, the class erupted in applause, and I could see the pride on Mr. Dalton's face. He announced that I had indeed proven the correct answer to number 17 and awarded me an A+ for my effort.
Since that day in his geometry class, I have changed a lot. I became more confident in expressing my opinions and sharing my ideas with others. I started participating more in class discussions and even joined the debate team. Mr. Dalton's encouragement not only helped me excel in plane geometry but also taught me the importance of believing in myself and standing up for what I know is right. His impact on my life has been immeasurable, and I will forever be grateful for the lessons he taught me both inside and outside the classroom.

【答案】
The next morning, we headed out to a remote school with resources. When we arrived, the children welcomed us with big smiles. Nia and Robyn were shocked to see the simple classrooms and the lack of basic facilities. They quickly got involved, helping to distribute the resources and playing with the children. During the two weeks, they learned to appreciate what they had and realized the importance of helping others.
Upon returning to the UK, the change in Nia and Robyn was evident. They no longer complained about trivial things and became more grateful for their lives. They also started to save money to support the charity. I was proud to see their growth and the positive impact the trip had on them. It was a journey that they would never forget.

【答案】The two girls finally reached the living room where the gifts were placed. Seeing many packages, Julia’s eyes widened gladly. However, she suddenly felt sad, realizing none was from her dear grandpa. Just then, Angela handed her a package and said kindly, “It’s from me and Grandpa.” Feeling unbelievable, Julia quickly opened the package and found her sister’s favorite necklace, which made her confused. Angela explained, “I guess Grandpa would give you one like this this Christmas.” She stopped, dried her eyes, and continued, “So I thought you might like to have mine.”
With tears in her eyes, Julia carefully took the necklace out of the box. She held this shining chain as if it were made of the finest gold in the world. “Let me help you,” Angela said as she offered to put the necklace around Julia’s neck. The small heart felt warm against Julia’s skin. In her mind, she could see Grandpa smiling at her. “Consider this gift our grandpa’s surprise for you,” Angela said. Julia immediately hugged Angela and thanked her repeatedly. When their parents later came, they saw the two sisters holding each other tightly.

【答案】After work, John posted the video online with a brief description attached. He called on netizens to lend a helping hand. Amazingly, the video went viral in no time. Countless people gave likes to the video, leaving heartwarming comments. They not only admired John for his selfless good deeds but also actively shared the video on various platforms to help look for Marley’s owner. Watching such a large number of helpful people getting enthusiastically involved, John was deeply touched. His heart was filled with hope and anticipation, waiting for the good news that Marley would be reunited with its owner soon.
Days later, news came that Marley’s owner had been found and would visit him. Hearing that, John felt excitement sweeping over him. Soon, there came a knock on the door. The moment he opened the door, a lady came into view. She reached out, grasped John’s hands and expressed her sincere gratitude. John responded with a warm smile and knelt down to pet Marley, who was wagging his tail excitedly. Before leaving, she insisted on giving John a gift. He politely refused, saying Marley’s safety and happiness was what he hoped for. As a highway patrol trooper, John went above and beyond the call of duty by helping a lost dog.

【答案】范文
We then took Carmen to our family friend Phil, a highway patrol officer. He offered to launch Carmen on her journey by taking her on his route for a day. That afternoon, when he stopped a driver who was not using a seatbelt, he urged her to wear the belt. He then introduced Carmen and asked the driver if she would like to take Carmen on the next part of her journey. Naturally, she agreed. That kicked off Carmen’s USA tour. Meanwhile, for Ashley, the following summer was a mix of anxiety and anticipation, as she checked daily for her package, only to be told “Not today,” each time.
Then one day in September, the long-expected package with Carmen finally arrived. Eagerly, we opened the box to explore the traces of Carmen’s adventures. There were postcards from the Grand Canyon, a shell from a Florida beach, and a tiny replica of the Statue of Liberty. For us, each souvenir was a snapshot of the kindness and generosity Ashley had encountered through Carmen. The notes in the journal painted a vivid picture of the people who had taken Carmen into their hearts. It was a heartwarming gift that our family treasured, inspiring us as Ashley bravely faced her path to health.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
I lay awake for a long time that night. Snowball snuggled at my feet, softly snoring, while my mind was anything but settled. Alice’s smiling face and the deep loneliness in her eyes kept replaying in my head. Although I really didn’t want to go back to that place with the noise of her breathing machine weighing me down, a sense of responsibility and sympathy for Alice weighed heavier. I recalled how gently Alice had petted Snowball, her soft humming still echoing in my ears. Seeing the tears roll down her cheeks made me realize how painful her past losses must have been. I decided to visit her again.
The next morning I tied Snowball to her leash and took a turn into the lane where Alice lived. As we approached Alice’s house, my heart started to race. I was still afraid to hear the unsettling sound of her breathing machine. But when I saw Alice sitting in her small yard, my heart softened. Alice’s eyes shone with tears as she gently petted Snowball. “Thank you, Jamie,” Alice said softly, her voice filled with gratitude. “You’ve made my morning so special.” I suddenly realized that sometimes giving a bit of time and care could bring great happiness to someone else.

【答案】After a week of not hammering the nails, he proudly went and told his dad. “Good,” said his dad. “I’m pleased to hear it. Now, every day you have without losing your temper, I want you to go and remove one of those nails you hammered in the fence.” The days went by, and the nails came out one at a time, but somewhere in the task of removing them, Matt noticed that they were leaving holes. The wood sprung back around some of the holes, closing them up a little, while others stayed the full size of the nail.
Matt became concerned about the holes that remained after removing the nails. He came to realize that it was a bit like what happened when we got angry. Anger could hurt and sometimes it left a wound or a scar that people remembered long. Matt wanted to fix what he’d done, so he asked his dad if he could paint the fence. He thought perhaps he could have a fence- painting party, inviting his friends around. He became confident that their friendship could be restored like the holes.
