B When floods destroyed Bangkok more than a decade ago, Thai landscape architect Voraakhom became determined to help her sinking hometown fight this deadly climate threat. “For us, climate change is primarily a water crisis,” she said. The architect integrates nature and water into her designs to create landscapes that help ease flooding and add greenery to densely populated cities. To date, Thailand has tried to tackle its flooding problem by building higher and higher dams. She said, arguing that this is the wrong approach and a solution based on fear, “the central question sinking cities like Bangkok need to focus on is how we are going to live with the water, without fear.” One of Voraakhom’s most innovative designs is Centenary Park, which stores large amounts of rainwater and prevents the surrounding streets from flooding. Voraakhom also created Asia’s largest rooftop farm, Siam Green Sky, which recycles food waste from restaurants in the building below and uses it as plant fertilizer. The farm also slows down and stores large amounts of rainwater. Inspired by Thailand’s traditional agricultural practices, the architect created a landscape which allows rainwater to pour into the herb gardens. A research fellow at the Stockholm Environment Institute, Diane Archer said, “For Voraakhom’s urban green spaces, not only are they designed to tackle flooding by acting as water storage spaces, but they contribute to cleaning the air and providing essential green oases in our concrete jungle, so important for mental and physical health. Even at a small scale, these parks are beneficial to the residents, and we could do with more.” Voraakhom’s designs and the lessons are now expanding beyond Thailand. “Green, climateadapted areas are a good long-term investment for cities,” she said, “and the best solution for the next generation.” 24. How does Voraakhom help cities with a large population to address flooding? A By building higher and higher dams. B. By countering the fear of residents. C. By using nature and water in her design. D. By painting landscapes for the cities. 25. What is food waste in Siam Green Sky used to do? A. To store rainwater. B. To fertilize herb gardens. C. To create a landscape. D. To be recycled by restaurants. 26. What does Archer think of Voraakhom’s designs? A. They discover green oases in cities. B. They benefit the health of citizens. C. They become the biggest air cleaner. D. They increase concrete storage in cities. 27. Which of the following words best describe Voraakhom? A. Practical and self-focused. B. Generous and business-minded. C. Ambitious and iron-hearted. D. Creative and strong-willed. C If your Thanksgiving custom leads to falling asleep on the sofa after a meal, you already know that a great dinner makes you tired. But was the turkey responsible for your sleep? The story is that tryptophan (色氨酸), one of the many amino acid (氨基酸) found in meat, causes sleepiness in your brain. And that explains why you need some sleep after a big meal. But the fact is far from it. While it is true that turkey supplies tryptophan, turkey isn’t a unique source of tryptophan. Any protein from animal sources (beef, chicken, fish, eggs, dairy products...) supplies all the necessary amino acids, including tryptophan. So if just getting tryptophan from your diet was enough to make you tired, you’d need some sleep after your morning eggs or midafternoon yogurt, too. In fact, turkey is lower in tryptophan than other meats, like chicken. What’s more, other amino acids in turkey could actually make you feel exhilarated. For example, some may help produce a certain chemical that makes you feel awake and keep active. Since you probably don’t feel like heading out for a run after your Thanksgiving dinner, it’s obvious that no one amino acid in your meal can decide how you feel after. Here’s why your Thanksgiving dinner really makes you sleepy. Instead of looking at the amino acids and how they might affect your brain, think about the big picture. The mountains of calories, proteins, and fats in your Thanksgiving meal are the reasons why you need some sleep — not the tryptophan in turkey. The breakdown of food uses a lot of energy: between 3 and 10 percent of the total calories you eat. When you overeat, your body system starts working overtime to break down that big meal. 28. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2? A. A balanced diet is rich in protein. B. Turkey is beneficial to people’s health. C. Tryptophan from our diet helps with our sleep. D. Turkey contains too little tryptophan to cause tiredness. 29. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Enable you to feel energetic. B. Cause your mind to work slowly. C. Improve your creativity. D. Keep you tired and lazy. 30. What can we conclude from the last paragraph? A. People should do exercise after holiday meals. B. Overeating on Thanksgiving makes people sleepy. C. Turkey on the Thanksgiving menu may be replaced. D. People should avoid taking in too many amino acids. 31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Does Thanksgiving turkey really make you sleepy? B. Should the Thanksgiving custom be changed? C. How do amino acids work in your body? D. What is the function of tryptophan? D For all the incredible advances in virtual reality devices the worlds they generate still feel more virtual than real. That’s because much of the current development has focused on how those worlds look and sound. But humans experience the real world through many other senses--importantly touch. HaptX has spent more than a decade developing a haptic (触觉的) glove that simulates (模拟) the vivid sense of touch in the virtual world. The haptic glove applies advanced “microfluidic” technology. It starts with packed air, which is pushed into a device called an air controller. When a user interacts with an object in a virtual space, this controller sends air to specific points on the glove. The air fires actuators (促动器) housed inside the glove that press against the user’s palm and fingertips, providing haptic feedback that simulates “touching” the object. A “muscle system” also generates a resistive force that copies the virtual object’s size and shape. HaptX gave people the opportunity to try the device at a show in Las Vegas. In one demo, people used one hand to pet a cat and the other to touch a tree that was grown in a pot. The glove was able to provide discrepant feelings for each hand at the same time. The cat was smooth and continuous, while the tree stung people’s hands with thin sharp points. While the technology has a wide range of applications, the biggest one is training. The training opportunities include teaching pilots to fly planes, surgeons to perform surgery, and technicians to perform tricky repairs. If paired with a large language model AI, such simulated environments could help professionals like physical specialists improve the hands-on and social aspects of the job at the same time. Another area HaptX is exploring is the field of robotics. A robot equipped with skillful, human-like hands could be sent onto a site that is too dirty, dangerous, or distant for a human. It could work more precisely. If the operators were equipped with the glove, they could feel what the robots feel during their work while also keeping them safe. Looking ahead, HaptX plans to fine-tune its current development kit to make it more effective. “What’s real, and what’s virtual? That’s where we’re going,” HaptX’s chief officer concluded. 32. Why does the current virtual reality technology still feel virtual? A. It lacks interaction with the users. B. It fails to present high - quality scenes. C. It is limited to vision and sound senses. D. It suffers a delayed reaction to touch. 33. How does HaptX’s glove copy the feel of touch? A. By using air to activate haptic feedback. B. By guiding the users’ fingers and muscle. C. By using electricity to excite hand nerves. D. By controlling the airflow in the haptic glove. 34. What does the underlined word “discrepant” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Various. B. Different. C. Uncomfortable. D. Pleasant. 35. What could HaptX’s gloves be applied to do following their further application? A. Help robots protect people’s safety. B. Enhance people’s ability to do dangerous work. C. Develop people’s communication skills. D. Improve the quality of robots’ work. Perhaps you attempted to make bread but ended in failure. Back then, there were few Indians anywhere around the US. My father came to Kansas, where he would get his Ph.D. Six months later, my mother came with the three of us kids — my sister, my brother, and me. We were just six, five and three years old then. It was the very first winter when we were in Kansas. It was so cold, but we didn’t have heavy coats or warm clothes. We didn’t have a concept of how cold it really could be in the Midwest, and there was a new surprise every day. We didn’t have a car or anything like that, and my dad didn’t have a US driver’s license. But anyway, my father was studying for his Ph.D., and he would walk up and down a big hill to and from the campus on a regular basis. Since I was three years old, I didn’t go to school, but my sister and brother were in school. My father had to walk down the big hill to take them to school every day and then walk back up the hill to go to university. After about three weeks of living like this, a woman called Valerie, whose son John was in the same class as my brother, started noticing them. On a very cold snowy morning, when they went to school as usual,Valerie passed by. She pulled up and said, “I see you on the way every day. Don’t you feel cold without coats?”My father responded,“We didn’t expect the weather would be so cold in Kansas.”Valerie said,“Maybe I can take your daughter and son to school. Would you like a ride?” Paragraph 1: Hearing that, my dad nodded with great joy. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Later, Valerie and her family became so dear to my family. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 沈阳二中27届2024-2025学年度上学期10月学科检测 英语试题 说明:1. What is probably the man’s job? Today I want to discuss the topic of dealing with disagreements, which are unavoidable in human relationships, so it’s important to solve them in a healthy manner. When faced with a disagreement, it’s necessary to view the situation with an open mind. The first effective way is active listening. This includes giving others your full attention, trying to understand their opinions, and knowing their real feelings. By listening actively, you can create safe space for open communication. The second way is finding common ground. It’s helpful to recognize shared interests or goals and then work on a solution that satisfies both sides. Thirdly, it’s important to manage your feelings. Bad feelings can worsen disagreements and stop good communication. Taking a step back, practicing self awareness, and using skills like deep breathing or taking a break can help you remain calm and deal with the disagreement properly. Lastly, you should remember that disagreements are good for growth. By solving disagreements, you can strengthen relationships and create a better environment. A Do you like travelling? A. By building higher and higher dams. 24. C 25. B 26. B 27. Even at a small scale, these parks are beneficial to the residents, and we could do with more.(对于Voraakhom的城市绿地来说,它们不仅被设计用来作为蓄水空间来应对洪水,而且它们有助于清洁空气,并在我们的混凝土丛林中提供必要的绿色绿洲,这对身心健康非常重要。 根据文章第一段“When floods destroyed Bangkok more than a decade ago, Thai landscape architect Voraakhom became determined to help her sinking hometown fight this deadly climate threat.(十多年前,洪水摧毁了曼谷,泰国景观设计师Voraakhom决心帮助她下沉的家乡对抗这种致命的气候威胁)”可知,Voraakhom对于帮助家乡是意志坚定的;根据文章第三段“One of Voraakhom’s most innovative designs is Centenary Park, which stores large amounts of rainwater and prevents the surrounding streets from flooding.(Voraakhom最具创新性的设计之一是百年公园,它可以储存大量的雨水,防止周围的街道被洪水淹没)”可知,Voraakhom很有创造力。故选D。 C If your Thanksgiving custom leads to falling asleep on the sofa after a meal, you already know that a great dinner makes you tired. D 29. A 30. B 31. 根据第一段“The story is that tryptophan (色氨酸), one of the many amino acid (氨基酸) found in meat, causes sleepiness in your brain. And that explains why you need some sleep after a big meal.(这个故事是色氨酸,肉类中发现的许多氨基酸之一,会导致你的大脑困倦。这就解释了为什么你在大餐后需要一些睡眠)”以及第二段中“But the fact is far from it. While it is true that turkey supplies tryptophan, turkey isn’t a unique source of tryptophan.(但事实远非如此。 根据划线词后文“For example, some may help produce a certain chemical that makes you feel awake and keep active.(例如,一些可能有助于产生某种化学物质,使你感到清醒并保持活跃)”可知,后文的例子表明,火鸡中的其他氨基酸实际上可以使你精力充沛,保持活跃,故划线词意思是“使你精力充沛”。故选A。 根据最后一段“Here’s why your Thanksgiving dinner really makes you sleepy. When you overeat, your body system starts working overtime to break down that big meal.(以下是感恩节晚餐让你昏昏欲睡的原因。 根据第一段“If your Thanksgiving custom leads to falling asleep on the sofa after a meal, you already know that a great dinner makes you tired. But was the turkey responsible for your sleep?(如果你的感恩节习惯是饭后躺在沙发上睡着,那么你已经知道一顿丰盛的晚餐会让你感到疲惫。 A。 D For all the incredible advances in virtual reality devices, the worlds they generate still feel more virtual than real. C 33. A 34. B 35. 根据文章第一段“That’s because much of the current development has focused on how those worlds look and sound. But humans experience the real world through many other senses—importantly touch.(这是因为当前的大部分开发都专注于这些世界的外观和声音。 根据文章第二段“It starts with packed air, which is pushed into a device called an air controller. When a user interacts with an object in a virtual space, this controller sends air to specific points on the glove. The air fires actuators (促动器) housed inside the glove that press against the user’s palm and fingertips, providing haptic feedback that simulates “touching” the object.(它从压缩空气开始,这些空气被推入一个叫做空气控制器的设备中。 故选A。 根据划线词下文“The cat was smooth and continuous, while the tree stung people’s hands with thin sharp points.(猫是光滑的,连续的,而树用细尖刺人的手)”可知,手套可以同时为每只手提供不同的感觉。 根据文章倒数第二段“Another area HaptX is exploring is the field of robotics. A robot equipped with skillful, human-like hands could be sent onto a site that is too dirty, dangerous, or distant for a human. It could work more precisely. If the operators were equipped with the glove, they could feel what the robots feel during their work while also keeping them safe.(HaptX正在探索的另一个领域是机器人领域。 Perhaps you attempted to make bread but ended in failure. Since I was three years old I didn’t go to school, but my sister and brother were in school. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: Hearing that, my dad nodded with great joy. He said, “That would be great. That’s very kind of you.” Then my sister and brother got into Valerie’s car on the freezing cold day. After expressing their thanks to Valerie, they greeted John with a smile. After a while, a faint flush rose to my brother’s cheeks because of the warm wind in the car, and my sister had a broad smile on her face. Seeing that, Valerie decided to continue the act from then on. Paragraph 2: Later, Valerie and her family became so dear to my family. It just started with this small act of offering a ride, and afterwards the relationship between the two families gradually deepened. We kids have been close friends with John. Valerie and my mother also became very close. Valerie and her family tried to help us in other aspects, such as offering us warm clothes we were in urgent need of at that time. And my mother loved to cook Indian food for Valerie’s family. We all believed that our friendship would last forever. 词汇激活 行为类 表达感谢:express their thanks / express gratitude 继续:continue /go on 提供:offer / provide 情绪类 开心:joy / happiness 善良:kind / warm-hearted 【点睛】[高分句型1] After expressing their thanks to Valerie, they greeted John with a smile. (运用了动名词作宾语) [高分句型2] We all believed that our friendship would last forever.
