If they didn’t love me, Mom said to send them her way for a good talking to. I couldn’t stop laughing. My mom dropped me off at the school gates about five minutes before the bell. A little blonde girl got dropped off at the same time and started waving (招手) at me. She ran over and told me her name was Abigail. She was very nice and we became close straight away. We spent all morning together and began to talk to another girl called Stacey. The three of us sat together in class all day and we even made our way home together! It went so quickly. A new study says yes. Exercise can make you look younger. At least it can lower your fitness age—that is the measure of how well your body works. A study of athletes in the National Senior Games found that their fitness age was more than 20 years younger than their chronological age. The games took place in the Midwestern state of Minnesota. Tony Diamond took part in the games. Every morning he went to a local park and walked fast for an hour. Then, the retired navy captain ran for an hour. Two or three times a week, he went to a gym for muscle(肌肉) training. Mr. Diamond won three medals at the 2015 National Senior Games. “My current age is 86 years old, and my fitness age is 44. I think I am in such good physical condition because I do a lot of exercise during my life. I have been exercising since I was a little boy,” said Mr. Diamond. “I'm 62 years old and my fitness results showed that I was 32 years,” said Ms White. Ms. White and Mr. Diamond are some of the 5,000 Senior Games participants who took part in the fitness age study. Pamela Peeke was an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Maryland. She worked on the study with Ulrik Wisloff at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Mr Wisloff developed a fitness calculator. An online calculator is available for anyone to use for free. Ms. Peeke says there are benefits from attending this test. The National Senior Games take place every two years. They are the competition for athletes older than 50. The games include a variety of sports. This year the average age of the people competing was 68. But their average fitness age was 43. 8. What can make us look younger? A. Taking exercise. B. Becoming an athlete. C. Walking fast every day. D. Going to the park every day. 9. Today on Education Tips, we will explore two no-cost ways that can help you improve your learning: wakeful rest and sleep. When many students finish studying, they often go straight to another activity. Perhaps they look at their phone or computer. They might even play a video game or watch television. But research suggests that resting after your study may help you remember what you have studied. The basic idea is this: by stopping your activity after the study, your brain gets a chance to rest. Resting is difficult when you are playing computer games. While this might sound unusual to you, many studies have explored the benefits of resting after learning—what is called “wakeful rest”. A 2019 study found that both young and older adults were able to better remember information they learned after doing wakeful rest. If you want to give “wakeful rest” a try, here are a few simple things to do. Rest quietly for five to ten minutes. Do not look at your phone, read stories or play games. It is really that easy! Besides wakeful rest, sleep is also important for learning. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS) notes that sleep helps people to learn in two ways. A report on the school’s website explains that “a sleep-deprived person cannot focus attention well and therefore cannot learn well”. It also says, “Sleep itself helps us to memorize and that memorizing is very important for learning new information.” The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) suggests that adults between the ages of 20 and 64 get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per day. Teenagers may need a little bit more, and people over the age of 65 may need a little less. Try to get some “wakeful rest” after a study. Then try to get a good night’s sleep. That’s it—a simple, no-cost way to help you remember what you learn. 12. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The importance of sleep. B. The good ways to get a rest. C. The reason for having a rest. D. The types of resting activities. 13. Which activity might be recommended shortly after studying? A. Reading a newspaper. B. Playing a video game. C. Sitting there doing nothing. D. Having a nice sleep at night. 14. How long should teenagers sleep each day according to NSF? A. Less than 7 hours. B. Just 7 hours. C. No more than 9 hours. D. Around 9 hours. 15. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Low-cost Tips on Working B. Good Things to Do After Your Study C. Why Do We Need to Have a Good Sleep? D. How Long Should We Rest After Learning? C 13. C 14. D 15. 根据第三段“The basic idea is this: by stopping your activity after the study, your brain gets a chance to rest. Resting is difficult when you are playing computer games.” 根据第六段“If you want to give ‘wakeful rest’ a try, here are a few simple things to do. Rest quietly for five to ten minutes. Do not look at your phone, read stories or play games. It is really that easy!”(如果你想尝试一下“清醒式休息”,这里有一些简单的事情可以做。 根据倒数第二段“The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) suggests that adults between the ages of 20 and 64 get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per day. Teenagers may need a little bit more, and people over the age of 65 may need a little less.”(国家睡眠基金会建议20到64岁的成年人每天要睡7到9个小时。 根据第一段“What you do after studying could have a big effect on how well you learn and remember. Today on Education Tips, we will explore two no-cost ways that can help you improve your learning: wakeful rest and sleep.”(学习后做什么对你的学习和记忆有很大的影响。 由此可知,B选项 “Good Things to Do After Your Study(学习后要做的事情)”是对文章内容最好的概括。 How to Make Friends at a New School Starting with a new school can be difficult. Her father, a sheepherder who raised hundreds of sheep, was going to the nearest town to do some urgent things. He suggested that Tina should herd (放牧) the sheep while he was away. But her mother, a disabled woman, doubted whether Tina could do that. Hearing this, Tina stepped into her parents’ room. “Mom, I can herd the sheep. I have grown up,” said Tina, full of expectation. Her parents smiled and agreed. After putting some bread and water into her bag as lunch, Tina drove the sheep out of sheepfold (羊圈), walking them south to a distant grassland. Her mother repeatedly told her that she didn’t have to herd the sheep until the sunset like her father did. But Tina had made up her mind to prove that she had grown up. It was the first time that Tina had herded the sheep. That day seemed much longer than any other day before. The sun seemed to have stopped in the middle of the sky. The bread was eaten up soon and so was the water. So after some hesitation, Tina finally decided to drive the sheep back home while the sun was still high in the west. Tina’s father was waiting outside the sheepfold, as if he had expected all that. He smiled at Tina but Tina just kept her head down. The sheep soon got into the sheepfold. Tina was about to shut the door when her father told her to count the sheep in case that some sheep were lost. Tina followed her father’s orders despite her unwillingness. The sheep were not cooperative (配合的) at all. They were coming and going. Tina counted the sheep three times but each was a different number. She tried again and again and at last she told her father that she had lost three. Her father was not angry but said, “Three? Are you kidding?” Tina felt so guilty that she turned around immediately and went to look for the missing sheep and the pride as well. It was getting dark and Tina walked along the path to the grassland in search of the sheep ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “No, you didn’t lose them,” her father said calmly, much to her surprise. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: It was getting dark and Tina walked along the path to the grassland in search of the sheep. Tina searched everywhere she could think of, but in vain. The grass and jungle along the path seemed like beasts that were ready to attack her. Tina might lack the courage to walk in such a dark night before, but not that night. After 3 hours’ searching, she was exhausted. So she went back home. Her parents were sitting on the bed, seeming to be waiting for her. Tina gathered her courage and said in a low voice, “Dad, I failed. I didn’t find them back.” Paragraph 2: “No, you didn’t lose them,” her father said calmly, much to her surprise. He then told her the best time to count the sheep was when they were getting into the sheepfold through the door. Tina said she was too stupid to think of that. But her mother comforted her, saying that her father followed all the way to make sure Tina was safe. Tina was so touched and went forward to hug her parents. They smiled and patted Tina, “We are proud of you. You have really grown up!” 词汇激活 行为类 ①返回:go back/return ②鼓起勇气:gather one’s courage/screw up his courage ③进入:get into/enter 情绪类 ①感动的:touched/moved ②对……感到骄傲:be proud of/take pride in 【点睛】【高分句型1】The grass and jungle along the path seemed like beasts that were ready to attack her.(运用了that引导的定语从句) 【高分句型2】He then told her the best time to count the sheep was when they were getting into the sheepfold through the door.(运用了省略that的宾语从句) 听力答案:1-5 CBACA 6-10 CBABC 11-15 CCBAB 16-20 CABCA 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2024年屯昌中学高一年级秋季学期第一次月考 英语卷 考试时间:120分钟 满分:150分 注意事项:1. 1. C Is there a way to turn back the clock on your age? But their average fitness age was 43. 8 What can make us look younger? A. Taking exercise. B. Becoming an athlete. C. Walking fast every day. D. Going to the park every day. 9. What’s the meaning of the underlined words “chronological age” in Paragraph 2? A. Mental age. B. Psychological age. C. Actual age. D. Full age. 10 The example of Tony Diamond is used to ________. A. support the main idea of the passage B. prove more people like taking exercise C. encourage more people to take exercise D. show many people pay attention to beauty 11. From the passage we may safely draw a conclusion that ________. A. the faster you walk, the healthier you are B. the older you are, the more exercise you need C. the more active you are, the younger you look D. the more exercise you take, the longer you live D What you do after studying could have a big effect on how well you learn and remember. She was playing in the yard one morning when she overheard her parents’ dialogue. It was getting dark and Tina walked along the path to the grassland in search of the sheep. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “No, you didn’t lose them,” her father said calmly, much to her surprise. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力答案:1-5 CBACA 6-10 CBABC 11-15 CCBAB 16-20 CABCA 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
