It seems that we just can’t get enough of roller coasters. Today we look at some top amusement parks and the roller coasters which have helped make them famous.
Holiday World
It is a family park that resists the exciting atmosphere of its competitors and instead offers a more relaxing and friendly experience. Rare in that it is privately owned and it has many features other parks can’t match. There is lots of entertainment for youngsters, and the park’s family-friendly policy offers free entry to the water park, reasonable food prices and unlimited soft drinks free of charge.
Lake Compounce
Lake Compounce, one of America’s more traditional parks, is a rare find indeed. As the oldest continuously operating amusement park in the US, it has been a popular family spot since 1846. Like many old-time parks, it witnessed the danger of being closed. Luckily, in 1977, a well-known company gave its revival with new rides appealing to many new fans.
Knott’s Berry Farm
As one of America’s favourite theme parks, Knott’s has something for everyone. For those seeking a breathtaking rush, try the roller coaster, GhostRider or the Xcelerator. GhostRider is the single largest attraction in amusement park history and one of the longest and tallest wooden roller coasters in the world. If you are after something less exciting, go visit the heart of Knott’s, Ghost Town, for a glance of life in the Wild West of the 1880s. With its cowboys, steam trains and historic buildings-many transported from mining towns-Ghost Town will let you relive a piece of the past.
Islands of Adventure
In the style of Walt Disney World, Islands of Adventure is divided into themed “lands”. Unlike the sugar-coated Magic Kingdom, however, IOA features attractions promising to set the heart racing. While the Spiderman is fantastic, you haven’t truly lived until you’ve experienced The Incredible Hulk’s wild and unique uphill launch. The effect is like being trapped inside an airplane that’s flying out of control.
21. What is special about Holiday World?
A. It provides free food. B. It owns the latest ride technology.
C. It belongs to an individual. D. It creates the exciting atmosphere.
22. Which park takes visitors back to earlier times?
A. Holiday World. B. Lake Compounce.
C. Knott’s Berry Farm. D. Islands of Adventure.
23. Why does Islands of Adventure differ from Magic Kingdom?
A. It is divided into different lands. B. It plays many famous movies.
C. It has more visitors waiting in line. D. It provides a very exciting experience.

Anne of Green Gables is ideally meant for children — one might think so when seeing the cover or reading through the back page of the masterpiece. It was first published in the year 1904, authored by Lucy Maud Montgomery, but it still connects to today’s world where we forget to live in the present.
It tells of the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan (孤儿)girl who is mistakenly sent to Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a middle-aged brother and sister who had intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm in the fictional town of Avonlea. The novel describes how Anne makes her way with the Cuthberts, in school, and within the town.
The book teaches me a lot of things, the most important being — to be who you are. Why do we need to pretend to be somebody else and project a false image of ourselves to look better? We need to realize that we are all different in our own way and accept ourselves first. As is described in the book, Anne is a colorful and ever-growing character. She “has as many shades as a rainbow and every shade is the prettiest while it lasts.” Each aspect of her personality is beautiful, which makes her unique and interesting.
Another important concept that is illustrated remarkably well is the importance of taking joy in the world around us. Anne’s obvious wonder-struck appreciation of life made me truly appreciate the small things. Here is my favourite quote (引言) from Chapter 19:
I believe the nicest and sweetest days are not those on which anything very splendid or wonderful or exciting happens but just those that bring simple little pleasures, following one another softly, like pearls slipping off a string.
Anne’s influence has deeply shaped who I am today. This classic novel truly highlights the importance of self-love and gratitude. With its uplifting and refreshing story, it is a wonderful read for people of all ages seeking a joyful and enriching literary journey.
24. What do we know about Anne of Green Gables?
A. It is a recent release. B. It covers real events.
C. It is a timeless classic. D. It features world history.
25. What can we learn about Anne from paragraph 3?
A. She is true to herself. B. She achieves her goal.
C. She is talented in drawing. D. She cares about others.
26. Which of the following best matches the quote from Chapter 19?
A. Time waits for no man. B. Do one thing at a time.
C. Fortune favours the brave. D. Stop and smell the roses.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To tell a story. B. To remember a writer.
C. To teach a lesson. D. To recommend a book.
C
Would you take a trip if you couldn’t use your cellphone? A new tour company called Off the Grid is asking travellers to put their cellphones away and not even use them for photos. The company founder, Zach Beattie, is developing his business, using money he saved from a tech job at a mapping company. He’s hired guides for every trip but will help lead the first few himself.
The first trip is to Lisbon, Portugal, in July. It takes 7 to 10 days, with small groups of up to 16 people. Prices range from $1,500 to $1,650, including accommodations, meals and ground transportation. The plan includes at least three excursions (远足) and two social events, with an emphasis on unique experiences over bucket-list sightseeing. The tour also includes surfing lessons, yoga on the beach, a day of sailing and dinner with a local family.
“When you’re somewhere new, there’s a lot to see and a lot of cool and interesting people to meet,” Beattie said. “Your phone can distract (使分心) you.” The phone ban won’t be enforced quite as strictly as it seems at first glance. “We want it to be voluntary,” he said. “We’re not collecting phones and throwing them in a locked trunk. It’s held by you, but put in your pocket, and you state your intentions for the week, whether that’s checking your social media once or twice a day or a total blackout.”
Tour-goers also get a “dumbphone” without Internet access that’s loaded with numbers for group leaders and other participants, both for emergencies and to promote socializing. Participants may bring regular cameras, but Beattie is hiring a photographer for each tour so there will be plenty of photos to remember the trip. Once the trip is over, participants will have access to those photos for use in social media posts.
28. What can be learned about Zach Beattie?
A. He set up his business at his own expense.
B He is always guiding every trip personally.
C. He forbids tourists to take along cellphones.
D. He used to earn his living in a tour company.
29. What do we know about the Lisbon trip?
A The trip features sightseeing.
B. Participants live in homestays.
C. Air ticket is covered in the cost.
D. Tourists experience water sports.
30. What does Zach Beattie expect the participants to do?
A. Lock their phones in a trunk.
B. Post their photos on social media.
C Free themselves from their phones.
D. Shift their focus onto dumbphones.
31. What can tour-goers do with the dumbphone?
A. Take photos. B. Access the Internet.
C. Record the trip. D. Contact group members.

Courage is a huge theme in my life, a quality I constantly seek, appreciate, and analyze. The root of “courage” is “cor,” the Latin word for heart. In the beginning, courage meant “to speak one’s mind by telling all one’s heart.” While courage is often associated with heroism nowadays, I believe true courage lies in being open and honest about who we are and how we feel.
I recently witnessed an example of true courage. During a mountain-climbing trip with my 15-year-old daughter and some college students, I noticed her struggling to keep up with the group. Despite my suggestions to rest, she persisted until she couldn’t breathe properly.
Panicked, I called out to the front for help, but there was no response, and we had no cellphone signal. Fortunately, two students just came back to check out on us. They offered assistance and calmed us down. As we continued at a slower pace, they shared their own experiences, from starting out as beginners like my daughter to becoming consistently among the first to reach the peak.
“You know,” one of them said, looking at my daughter, “I was just like you when I started.
But with practice and proper pace, you’ll get there too.”
“Yeah, don’t let your lack of experience stop you,” the other added. “It’s okay to admit when you’re struggling or not feeling alright. In fact, it’s important to speak up and ask for help when you need it. That’s how we improve and grow.”
Reaching the mountain top was a huge relief for both my daughter and me. However, the two students addressed the celebrating group directly, emphasizing the importance of staying together in tough environments. Their words led the group to apologize to us for overlooking our struggle.
I was totally amazed at their bravery, and my daughter learned that it’s okay to be the least experienced in a group. Courage, I’ve come to realize, has a ripple effect. Each time we choose courage, we inspire those around us to be a little braver and make the world a little better.
32. Why does the author mention the original meaning of courage?
A. To question the common belief of courage.
B To argue for the true nature of courage.
C. To show the changing meaning of courage.
D. To compare different interpretations of courage.
33. What did the two students suggest the daughter do?
A. Keep to a suitable pace. B. Seek help whenever possible.
C. Challenge her own limits. D. Stick with experienced climbers.
34. Which action in the mountain-climbing story is an example of true courage?
A. The mother asked the girl to rest.
B. The girl tried hard not to fall behind.
C. The two students pointed out the group’s fault.
D. The group celebrated the reach of the mountain top.
35. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. Kindness connects us all. B. Being a beginner takes courage.
C. We don’t have to be a hero to be brave. D. With courage, everyone can be perfect.
Facial expressions are the primary way people show emotion and understand the feelings of others. Happiness, sadness, disgust, fear and surprise can be communicated through facial expressions alone. ___36___
Fortunately, you can regain some control over communication by working with what you have left — the eyes. If you want to increase understanding with a masked individual, you should look them in the eyes. ___37___ Eye contact needs extra brain power and becomes uncomfortable after only three seconds. But bear in mind, eye contact can also make you appear more intelligent and trustworthy.
You might be surprised how much information is conveyed by the body itself. For instance, when someone is happy, they lift their head; when they are sad, they drop their head. Learning how people use their bodies to convey emotion may help reduce the uncertainty you feel when communicating with someone in a mask. ___38___ When engaged in a conversation, you can appear more attentive by turning your body toward the individual, leaning in or nodding. To let another person know you want to start speaking, straighten your posture, or nod more frequently.
Don’t forget the impact of your voice. ___39___ Along with the actual words, you also use volume, tone and pauses to convey your message. For instance, a whisper may indicate sadness or insecurity, whereas a higher-pitched shout could show anger or intensity.
___40___ As long as you adopt proper manners, good communication still can be achieved though faces are partially covered.
A. It may be easier said than done.
B. Become aware of your own body language, too.
C. It’s not just what you say, but it’s how you say it.
D. Social distance doesn’t have to mean socially distant.
E. Raising your voice can alter the message you are trying to send.
F. But when part of the face is masked, it becomes tougher to recognize them.
G. You can use your body and voice to convey the emotions your mask might hide.

I was walking along the road to school one day and I met my friend Raine. He suggested that we skip school and go to the movies. I refused as my dad was very fierce and strict. After much persuasion, I gave in. There was a Will Smith movie on and I was a fan.
So we set off to the movies together, bought our tickets, popcorn and drinks and settled down comfortably. As we were early, the lights were still on. We watched people come in groups, families and there were couples too. Some of them looked like school students playing truant(逃学)like us. As I turned around, I caught a glimpse of my uncle Andy and Aunt Jane walking in. They were kind and cared about me very much. I sank into my seat quickly to avoid being spotted. I signaled to Raine that there was someone I didn’t want to see and Raine made it more obvious by turning around and asking “Who? And where?” loudly. It made me sit even lower in my seat.
To make things worse, they came and sat in the row behind us and were saying to each other how I would have loved to come to this movie as I adored Will Smith. They were even commenting about the students playing truant. Soon the movie began and I was glad when the lights were turned off but I didn’t enjoy the movie at all for fear of being spotted. So, I sat there like an astronaut, peering over the front seat.
Every now and then I would secretly take a quick look at my aunt and uncle. I was sure they were also looking at me. Feeling nervous and anxious, I kept wondering how I could leave the cinema without being noticed.
注意:
1.所续写短文词数应为150左右;
When the movie ended and the lights came on, I remained seated.

W: Yes, I want a one-bedroom flat with an open kitchen on king street.
M: OK, did you see our advertisements in the newspaper or on the Internet?
W: Neither. My colleague recommended your agency to me.

W: Yes, as long as it’s only a short walk to my office.
M: I got it. Do you have any idea of your budget?
W: Maybe 500 dollars a month?
M: Let me check. Oh, I’ve found one for you, but it’s 100 dollars more than your budget. If you rent it, you have to pay three months rent in advance.

W: I’m going to have meetings next Tuesday and I will be away on business next Wednesday. How about 2 p. m. next Thursday?

M: Emerging from the Antarctic deep, the world’s most famous undiscovered shipwreck endurance is now found. It’s the first time anyone has seen it in more than 100 years. Endurance, perfectly preserved, is 3000 meters beneath the Ice. I knew that this was probably either the first or second most strongly built Ice ship ever, and I was just amazed at its construction. It held together beautifully, said a British explorer. The condition is astonishing. The exploring team spent weeks searching the deep until endurance was at last found. The team found that endurance was in trouble from the start, becoming stuck in thick sea Ice just weeks after setting off from south Georgia. It floated for months before an order was eventually given to the crew to abandon the ship. The ship won’t be red and nothing will be removed. When the team left, it was just as. It was found resting in the darkness of this most remote corner of the world.
A
It seems that we just can’t get enough of roller coasters.
As one of America’s favourite theme parks Knott’s has something for everyone.

C 25. A 26. D 27. D

文章第一段讲到“Anne of Green Gables is ideally meant for children — one might think so when seeing the cover or reading through the back page of the masterpiece. It was first published in the year 1904, authored by Lucy Maud Montgomery, but it still connects to today’s world where we forget to live in the present. (《绿山墙的安妮》是儿童的理想之作——当人们看到封面或翻阅这部杰作的封底时,可能会这么认为。它于1904年首次出版,作者是露西·莫德·蒙哥马利,但它仍然与我们忘记生活在当下的当今世界联系在一起。)”可知,《绿山墙的安妮》是一部永恒的经典之作。故选C。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。文章第三段讲到“The book teaches me a lot of things, the most important being — to be who you are. Why do we need to pretend to be somebody else and project a false image of ourselves to look better? We need to realize that we are all different in our own way and accept ourselves first. (这本书教会了我很多东西,最重要的是——做你自己。为什么我们需要假装成别人,给自己树立一个虚假的形象,让自己看起来更好?我们需要意识到,我们在自己的方式上都是不同的,并首先接受自己。)”可知,第一句是本段的主旨句,告诉我们本段主旨是:做你自己。下文用安妮的例子来证明这一观点。从第三段我们可以了解到安妮忠于自己。故选A。
文章倒数第二段讲到“I believe the nicest and sweetest days are not those on which anything very splendid or wonderful or exciting happens but just those that bring simple little pleasures (我相信,最美好、最甜蜜的日子并不是那些发生了任何精彩、美妙或激动人心的事情的日子,而是那些带来简单小快乐的日子)”可知,生活中的点滴小事情就是最美好、最甜蜜的日子,因此最符合第19章的引文的是:停下来闻一闻玫瑰花。
文章最后一段讲到“With its uplifting and refreshing story, it is a wonderful read for people of all ages seeking a joyful and enriching literary journey. (它以其振奋人心、令人耳目一新的故事,为寻求一段快乐而丰富的文学之旅的各个年龄段的人们提供了一本精彩的读物。)”可知,作者写这篇文章的目的是推荐一本书。故选D。

B. He is always guiding every trip personally.
C. He forbids tourists to take along cellphones.
D. He used to earn his living in a tour company.
29. What do we know about the Lisbon trip?
A. The trip features sightseeing.
B. Participants live in homestays.
C. Air ticket is covered in the cost.
D. Tourists experience water sports.
30. What does Zach Beattie expect the participants to do?
A. Lock their phones in a trunk.
B. Post their photos on social media.
C. Free themselves from their phones.
D. Shift their focus onto dumbphones.
31. What can tour-goers do with the dumbphone?
A. Take photos. B. Access the Internet.
C. Record the trip. D. Contact group members.
A 29. D 30. C 31. D

根据文章第一段中“A new tour company called Off the Grid is asking travellers to put their cellphones away and not even use them for photos. The company founder, Zach Beattie, is developing his business, using money he saved from a tech job at a mapping company. (一家名为Off the Grid的新旅游公司要求游客把手机收起来,甚至不要用手机拍照。该公司的创始人扎克·比蒂(Zach Beattie)正在用他在一家地图公司从事技术工作攒下的钱发展自己的业务。)”可知,Zach Beattie用之前工作省下来的钱自己出钱创办自己的旅游公司,名为Off the Grid。故选A。
根据第二段最后一句“The tour also includes surfing lessons, yoga on the beach, a day of sailing and dinner with a local family.(行程还包括冲浪课程、海滩瑜伽、一天的帆船航行以及与当地家庭共进晚餐。)”
根据第三段中““When you’re somewhere new, there’s a lot to see and a lot of cool and interesting people to meet,” Beattie said. “Your phone can distract (使分心) you.” (‘当你到了一个新的地方,你会看到很多东西,会遇到很多很酷很有趣的人。’贝蒂说:‘你的手机会让你分心。’)”以及““We want it to be voluntary,” he said. “We’re not collecting phones and throwing them in a locked trunk. It’s held by you, but put in your pocket, and you state your intentions for the week, whether that’s checking your social media once or twice a day or a total blackout.”(‘我们希望这是自愿的,’他说:‘我们不会收集手机,然后把它们扔进锁着的后备箱。你拿着它,但把它放在口袋里,你陈述你一周的意图,无论是每天查看一两次社交媒体还是完全不上网。’)”可知,贝蒂希望参与者能够远离手机,把自己从手机中解放出来,因为手机会让人分心、会错过旅途中遇到的人和风景,但是不会收手机并把手机锁在后备箱里。故选C。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段第一句“Tour-goers also get a “dumbphone” without Internet access that’s loaded with numbers for group leaders and other participants, both for emergencies and to promote socializing. D
B. To argue for the true nature of courage.
B 33. A 34. C 35. C
根据文章第一段“In the beginning, courage meant “to speak one’s mind by telling all one’s heart.” While courage is often associated with heroism nowadays, I believe true courage lies in being open and honest about who we are and how we feel.”(在开始,勇气意味着“说出自己的想法,表达自己的心声”。
根据文章第四段“ But with practice and proper pace, you’ll get there too.”” 以及第六段““Yeah, don’t let your lack of experience stop you,” the other added. “It’s okay to admit when you’re struggling or not feeling alright. In fact, it’s important to speak up and ask for help when you need it. That’s how we improve and grow.””(“是的,不要让你的经验不足阻止你,”另一个人补充道。“当你在挣扎或感觉不舒服时,承认是可以的。事实上,当你需要帮助时,大声说出来并寻求帮助是很重要的。这就是我们进步和成长的方式。”)可推知,两位学生建议保持适当的步伐,还建议在必要时寻求帮助。因此“保持合适的速度,与他们所说的是一致的。B项“只要有可能就寻求帮助”有点极端,因为他们说的是“当你需要的时候”,而不是“只要有可能”。故选A。
根据文章第七段“Their words led the group to apologize to us for overlooking our struggle.”(他们的话让团队为忽视我们的困难向我们道歉。)

Facial expressions are the primary way people show emotion and understand the feelings of others. Happiness sadness, disgust, fear and surprise can be communicated through facial expressions alone.
F 37. A 38. B 39. C 40. D
由上文“Facial expressions are the primary way people show emotion and understand the feelings of others. Happiness, sadness, disgust, fear and surprise can be communicated through facial expressions alone. (面部表情是人们表达情感和理解他人感受的主要方式。快乐、悲伤、厌恶、恐惧和惊讶都可以通过面部表情来传达。)”可知,这里主要讲人们可通过面部表情表达各种情感,而F项But when part of the face is masked, it becomes tougher to recognize them.(但当面部的一部分被掩盖时,识别它们变得更加困难。)符合语境,与上文形成转折,其中them指代上文 Happiness, sadness, disgust, fear and surprise。故选F项。
由上文“If you want to increase understanding with a masked individual, you should look them in the eyes. (如果你想增进对戴口罩人的理解,你应该直视他们的眼睛。)” 可知,与戴口罩人交流可以看他们的眼睛,而下文“Eye contact needs extra brain power and becomes uncomfortable after only three seconds.(眼神交流需要额外的脑力,仅仅三秒钟后就会变得不舒服。)” It may be easier said than done.(说起来容易做起来难。)符合语境,有承上启下作用,其中It代指前文 you should look them in the eyes。故选A项。
由下文“When engaged in a conversation, you can appear more attentive by turning your body toward the individual, leaning in or nodding. To let another person know you want to start speaking, straighten your posture, or nod more frequently.(在交谈中,你可以通过将身体转向对方、身体前倾或点头来显得更加专注。为了让别人知道你想开始说话,挺直你的姿势,或者更频繁地点头。)”可知,这里主要讲在交流中要注意自己的肢体语言,所以B项Become aware of your own body language, too.(也要注意自己的肢体语言。)
由下文“Along with the actual words, you also use volume, tone and pauses to convey your message. For instance, a whisper may indicate sadness or insecurity, whereas a higher- pitched shout could show anger or intensity.(除了实际的单词,你还可以使用音量、语调和停顿来传达你的信息。例如,耳语可能表示悲伤或不安全感,而高音喊叫可能表示愤怒或强烈。)”可知,这里建议要注意说话方式,所以C项It’s not just what you say, but it’s how you say it.(这不仅仅是你说什么,而是你怎么说。)
由下文“As long as you adopt proper manners, good communication still can be achieved though faces are partially covered.(只要你举止得体,即使脸被部分遮住,也能实现良好的沟通。)” Social distance doesn’t have to mean socially distant.(社交隔离并不一定意味着社交疏远。)

2. 喜欢该人物的理由;
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
There are quite a few people that I admire greatly, but the one that I admire most is Thomas Edison. He was once thought to be a boy who was not worth educating. In fact, he was a man full of imagination.
I admire Edison a lot because of his great contribution to the world. He had more than 1,000 inventions. In his life time, he was always eager to know how things worked, which helped him to earn the nickname “the Wizard of Melo Park”. He was also so diligent that he worked day and night. And this explained why he had so many great inventions.
What impresses me most is his famous saying, “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” Probably I can’t be an Edison myself, but I can be a hardworking learner. From him, I realize the secret to success is not when or where you were born, but what you are doing and how you do it in your life.

注意:
1.所续写短文词数应为150左右;
When the movie ended and the lights came on, I remained seated.

In front of us were my aunt and uncle, waiting at the gate.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
When the movie ended and the lights came on, I remained seated. Hearing the crowds slowly move towards the door, my heart was beating wildly, but I knew if I stood up, I might be discovered. It felt like forever until almost all the people left. I peeked at where my aunt and uncle had been and found they were gone. Raine nodded at me, and we made a dash out of the door and fled down the stairs. I was running towards the gate of the cinema like crazy when I spotted two familiar figures.
In front of us were my aunt and uncle waiting at the gate. “We saw you the moment we came in. You haven’t really enjoyed the movie, have you?” Out of breath, we hung our head in shame. Biting my lips, I heard Raine trying to defend ourselves, “It was my idea, Sir! But school is boring!” A long, horrible silence. Then my aunt just asked us to think about how worried my mother and how angry and disappointed my father would be. Raine said no more, and I felt even guiltier. In the end, we decided to make a sincere apology to my parents and my teachers as well.
