Robert was born on August 9, 1910 in the Netherlands. His mother came from a family of musicians
and piano manufacturers, a fact that greatly influenced Robert’s life. His father was a physician in army, a
position which required frequent foreign postings. The family stayed in various areas of East Asia for most
of Robert’s youth. This experience contributed to his appreciation for cultures and mastery of several
languages.
Robert was a hardworking academic, collector of art and manuscripts, and translator of ancient
writings. He studied and trained to become a master musician on the Chinese guqin, and eventually wrote
two books on the instrument. Similarly, his skills as an artist in the traditional Chinese style and
knowledge of calligraphy were unparalleled. He wrote and published a number of non-fiction, scholarly
articles and books on Chinese music, art, and literature, as well as Chinese culture and folk legends.
In 1940, Robert came across a little-known and anonymous (匿名的)18th-century Chinese novel
that would take his career down an unplanned pathway and result in the public fame he never anticipated.
The novel, titled Four Great Strange Cases of Empress Wu’s Reign, was a fictional account of the deeds of
Judge Dee, one of the heroes of traditional Chinese detective fiction, and was set in the 7th-century Tang
Dynasty. Fascinated, Robert not only translated the novel into English, he also did some research on the
history of Chinese Penal Code and other legal literature of the period. It was not until 1949 that Robert was
able to publish his translation —Dee Goong An: Three Murder Cases Solved by Judge Dee. Robert’s
Chinese mysteries comprise over 10 novels and short-story volumes, recording the career of Chinese
detective called Di Renjie. Interestingly, the tales first found fame in oriental (东方的 )editions, before
being translated into English in 1957.
Through all the novels by Robert, he impressively brings to life the sights and sounds of daily
Chinese life in the past. His passionate devotion and respect for the Chinese culture was never discounted,
yet he also appreciated the purpose of fiction.
24.What inspired Robert’s love for oriental culture?
A.His language competence.
B.His previous stay in East Asia.
C.His mother’s good family background.
D.His father’s professional medical knowledge.
25.What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about?
A.Robert’s passion for China. B.Robert’s music proficiency.
C.Robert’s early achievements. D.Robert’s learning experiences.
26.What contributed to Robert’s fame?
A.He introduced western civilization to China.
B.He polished an existing Chinese fiction style.
C.He spread Chinese literature to a wider audience.
D.He conducted research on famous Chinese detectives.
27.Which of the following can best describe Robert’s translations?
A.Vivid and faithful. B.Dramatic and realistic.
C.Accurate and humorous. D.Imaginary and accessible.

Scientists have made a “breakthrough” in handling nuclear fusion (聚变 ). The US Department of
Energy officially announced the milestone in fusion energy research.
For the first time, researchers created a nuclear fusion reaction that produced more energy than they
put into the process. The experiment, conducted at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California,
generated 3.15 megajoules of energy, more than the 2.05 megajoules put into creating it.
Nuclear fusion works by forcing together two atoms---most often hydrogen---to make a heavier
one-like helium (氦 ). This explosive process releases massive amounts of energy, the Department of
Energy explains. Fusion is the opposite of fission (裂变), the reaction that powers nuclear reactors used
commercially today.
Fusion occurs naturally in the heart of the Sun and the stars, providing these cosmic (宇宙的 )
objects with fuel. Since the 1950s, scientists have been trying to reproduce it on Earth in order to make use
of the so-called clean, cheap, and almost limitless electricity. According to the International Atomic Energy
Agency, fusion generates four times more energy per kilogram than the fission used to power nuclear
plants, and nearly 4 million times more energy than burning oil or coal. What’s more, unlike fossil fuels,
fusion doesn’t release carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas that’s the main driver of climate change-into the
atmosphere. And unlike nuclear fission, fusion doesn’t create long-lived radioactive waste, according to
the Department of Energy. But so far, nuclear fusion hasn’t solved our energy problems on a grand scale.
The recent announcement is a huge step forward in nuclear fusion energy, but applying the
technology at commercial scale is likely still years away. Chanda Prescod Weinstein, a theoretical physicist,
pointed out that the process the Department of Energy uses requires tritium (氚 ), a rare and radioactive
isotope (同位素)of hydrogen. “It may yet convey important information that is ultimately transformative.
We don’t know yet,” Prescod Weinstein tweeted. Investors, including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, have
poured billions into clean energy field trying to make fusion commercially workable, and the recent
announcement is likely to continue that trend.
28.What is the breakthrough in nuclear fusion reaction?
第 4 页 共 6 页
A.It releases massive amounts of energy.
B.It produces 3. 15 megajoules of energy.
C.It works by forcing together two atoms.
D.It generates more energy than that put into it.
29.Why have scientists been conducting nuclear fusion experiments?
A.To avoid the commercial use of fission.
B.To recycle the byproduct of radioactive waste.
C.To reduce emission (排放) of greenhouse gas.
D.To aim for the high efficiency in producing energy.
30.What does paragraph 5 focus on?
A.The attitude of investors.
B.The prospect of fusion energy.
C.The significance of the announcement.
D.The difficulty in producing fusion energy.
31.What is the author’s attitude towards fusion energy?
A.Critical. B.Negative. C.Optimistic. D.Doubtful.

The Yellow River is the cradle(摇篮) of China’s civilization. And flood control and prevention
have always been key to the well-being of the people living along it. Now, scientists can better work on
these issues by giving the river a digital twin.
The digital twin of the Yellow River uses various technologies, including big data, artificial
intelligence, and the internet of things. Devices set up along the river collect and transmit information to
the center. Based on the information, a 3D model of the river is presented on the computer screen. It’s like
the Yellow River has a twin that reflects its real conditions.
One big breakthrough in the river’s digital governance (治理) is “smart stones”. According to Wang
Qin, a lead researcher at the Information Center of Yellow River Henan Bureau, a smart stone is a
water-proof stone-shaped device with chips, a battery, and a signal transmitter. They are buried in
important dike (堤 坝 ) locations to record and report the movement of dike stones. “Upon feeling
movement of the dike stones, the smart stone sends an alarm to the center for quick response,” Wang said.
“In the past, researchers had to learn the conditions of the dike on the spot by themselves, putting
their lives at risk,” said Zhao Xiao from the bureau. “Now the smart stones can do this for us, more safely,
quickly, and accurately.”
And in the sky, drones are flying. On the routes designed by engineers, the drones become expert
patrollers (巡逻员) of the river, looking at its dikes and flood prevention projects. According to Shen Lin
from the Yellow River Conservancy Commission, thanks to the drones, researchers at the command center
can get first-hand photos and information. “Researchers then update the 3D model according to the
changes the drones reported. The newly updated model helps us test our floodwater release plans in case
we ever need to batten down the hatches (未雨绸缪), ”said Shen.
Under the water and up in the sky, intelligence systems are helping to protect the Yellow River
Basin on all fronts. According to the Ministry of Water Resources, in the future, we can expect to see the
construction of an even more comprehensive digital system for this important river.
32.What is the main purpose of creating a digital twin of the Yellow River?
A.To conduct historical research.
B.To create a virtual tourist attraction.
C.To raise public awareness of river protection.
D.To improve flood control and prevention efforts.
33.How do the smart stones contribute to the river’s digital governance?
A.They record water quality.
B.They improve the river’s beauty.
C.They monitor and report dike movements.
D.They serve as markers for important locations.
34.What is one of the functions of drones in the digital governance of the Yellow River?
A.Entertaining tourists. B.Collecting information on dike conditions.
C.Patrolling and take wildlife photos. D.Testing water quality.
35.What does the underlined word “comprehensive” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Complete. B.Basic. C.Beautiful. D.Natural.

You’re not alone. Experts say kids are having to deal with pressure to drink and smoke at an earlier age.
“It seems to be starting younger and younger,” says Jonathan Pochyly, a psychologist in Chicago.
Kids might find themselves at a friend’s house with no adults around. 37 But kids
sometimes don’t know how to say “No” when someone suggests something like this.
38 Pochyly recommends kids talk with their parents beforehand and come up with a code
word to mean “Come pick me up, now!” Pochyly suggests “What time do I have to be home?” as a code
phrase. Then Mom and Dad can get the message and pretend you need to be home at once.
第 5 页 共 6 页
Using a code word might seem sneaky (偷偷摸摸的), but Pochyly says kids should feel good about
avoiding a bad situation. “ 39 ” he says. Deciding not to leave a bad situation can mean big
problems.
Some kids might worry that they’ll get in trouble if they call their parents and ask for help. Pochyly
suggests talking with parents ahead of time so kids know what to expect. “Say, ‘What do you think I
should do? 40 ’” he says.
Pochyly also says that kids also might decide to stand up to their friends and say they don’t think
it’s cool to smoke or drink. If your friends turn against you, “you have to question whether you want them
to be your friends, anyway,” says Pochyly.
A.But there are ways kids can stay out of it and still seem cool
B.You usually do as your peers say and make the people around you do so
C.How can you help me with this situation if it happens?
D.Does this peer (同龄人) pressure sound familiar to you?
E.If they are making a healthy choice, they should feel proud of that
F.Someone says, “Let’s smoke” or “Let’s have a drink”
G.Adults can protect children in this situation at any time

In the golden mist of late summer, Frank and John, two inseparable friends, set off on an adventure
they had particularly planned for weeks: a camping trip by the river. The air was filled with excitement as
they packed their backpacks with essentials—tents, cookers, and a map, though they were confident in
their knowledge of the area, having explored its boundaries since childhood.
As the sun began its fall, casting long shadows across the green landscape, they arrived at their
chosen spot—a quiet bend in the river, far from civilization’s noisiness. They set up camp, and the
crackling of the campfire and the gentle lapping of water against the shore were their only companions.
Under a starry sky, they shared stories and dreams, unaware that their comfortable escape was about to
take a dangerous turn.
The following morning, as they ventured deeper into the woods to gather firewood, the sky, which
had been clear and blue, turned frightening, with heavy clouds gathering. In the distance, a low, powerful,
rolling thunder echoed (回响) through the valley, a warning they should have noticed. Not frightened, they
continued, their laughter now was drowned out by the growing roar(咆哮) of the river.
It happened swiftly. A wall of water, caused by the storm, rushed down the river, catching them off
guard. In a heartbeat, their return path was cut off, the once familiar place was transformed into a maze (迷
宫) of rushing currents and mudslides. Panic rose within them, but Frank, always the calmer of the two,
remembered a survival tip from his father: “When lost or in danger, stay put if possible, assess your
resources, and think reasonably.”
With the river too dangerous to cross, they came back to higher ground, seeking shelter beneath a
rocky overhang. As the rain pounded down, they gathered together, their spirits dampened but not defeated.
John remembered another crucial lesson: using natural resources for survival. He suggested they start a fire
using dry leaves and branches they had collected before the storm and they managed to light a small flame,
providing warmth and a light of hope.

Dear Johnson,
With utter sincerity, I’m writing to extend my apology for the postponement of the English Drama

Out of our expectations, a lecture of vital importance will fall on next Friday, which unavoidably
conflicts with our initial arrangement, making many competitors unavailable to the contest. Therefore, the

1.The new sun rise brought new challenges and opportunities for Frank and John to prove their courage.
They crafted fishing hooks from bent wires found among their scattered belongings, cleverly attaching
them to flexible branches to catch fish in the running river. The day was also marked by tireless efforts to

signal for help, arranging branches and rocks into massive arrows that pointed toward their location,
hoping these markers would catch the eye of a passing aircraft. Frank, with his keen observation skills,
noticed the helicopter search patterns, suggesting they move closer to the riverbank during flyovers,
increasing their chances of being spotted.
The next day, as hope was beginning to fade, a rescue helicopter appeared. The bright clothes they
had hung between trees and the persistent smoke from their controlled fire served as a signal in the
wilderness. As they were airlifted to safety, Frank and John looked at each other, their eyes reflecting a
newfound appreciation for life, friendship, and the power of preparation and quick thinking in the face of
disaster. The adventure was also a reminder that even in the most unexpected and dangerous circumstances,
there is always a way out — if one remains calm, resourceful, and never loses sight of hope.

Frank, with his keen observation skills,
noticed patterns in the helicopter search patterns, suggesting they move closer to the riverbank during
flyovers, increasing their chances of being spotted.
