In a gray box, I have a thick pile of love letters. I imagine about sharing them with a granddaughter when I’m 90. But my most treasured love letter is from one of my best friends. It’s a handwritten letter years ago when I was having trouble getting over a man. Her letter is the most romantic in my pile. It made no excuses. It simply let me know that I was loved.
Reflecting on her gift, and the dying art of handwritten letters in our age of emails and emoticons, I chose to conduct an experiment this Christmas: replacing presents with heartfelt, handwritten love letters for my family members.
In our digital era, most of us rarely take the time to share deeply considered thoughts and emotions with the people in our lives. Handwriting captures the writer’s emotions, often preserved longer than digital exchanges. However, technology is taking over. First came typewriters and keyboards. Now a new brain-computer lets people type with their minds. What are we losing when we sacrifice the physical labor behind the written word? We tend to value what we struggle for. Have we undervalued the human exchange of ideas?
That day I came across a letter my mom wrote to her parents when she was young. She seemed so comfortable with her parents. It was a relationship I didn’t have with her. I was inspired by my mother’s letter to her parents when I sat down to write my letter to her. I wanted her to know my love, and to close the crack that technology and culture had created between us. With each sentence, I was discovering new and deeper ways of seeing my mother, and making myself known to her in more thoughtful ways as well.
Eight single-space pages later, my hand was aching but I was done. It was only the first of my love letters, but it was already clear: What had begun as a fun project was in fact one of the most important undertakings of my life.
4. Why does the author mention her love letters in Paragraph 1?
A. To show her grand charm as a young girl. B. To share them with one of her granddaughters.
C. To highlight the value of handwritten letters. D. To look back upon her romantic relationship.
5. How will technology probably affect us in the digital age?
A. Making our interaction less emotional. B. Encouraging our thoughtful communication.
C. Saving our physical labor in conveying emotions. D. Increasing our effort in handwritten exchanges.
6. Why did the author handwrite a letter to her mother?
A. To give her mother a big surprise. B. To answer her mother’s handwritten letter.
C. To bridge a communication gap. D. To make her mother feel more comfortable.
7. What did the author learn from her experiment?
A. The irreplaceable bond of family members. B. The tendency of information technology.
C. The expression of emotions in the digital age. D. The power of handwritten correspondence.

The social media platform Instagram once made headlines for limiting likes in an effort to reduce the comparisons and hurt feelings resulting from attaching popularity to sharing content. A small step in the right direction, says Jacqueline Sperling, a psychologist who works with youths that experience anxiety disorders.
Social media has a reinforcing nature. The platforms are designed to be addictive and are related to anxiety, depression, and even physical illnesses. But what makes users come back for more even when it can literally make them feel sick?
“The unknown outcome and the possibility of a desired outcome can keep users engaged with the sites,” Sperling says. “When the outcome is unpredictable, the behavior is more likely to repeat.” To boost self-esteem and feel a sense of belonging in their social circles, people post content with the hope of receiving positive feedback. FOMO--fear of missing out--f also plays a role. Teenagers hope to keep track of friends’ activities. Missing experiences can create anxiety and depression.
The earlier teens start using social media, the greater impact they have on mental health. This is especially true for females. While teen males tend to express aggression physically, females do so by excluding others and sharing hurtful comments. Social media increases the opportunity for such harmful interactions.
In addition, social media puts a lens filter (滤镜) on appearances and reality. When there’s a filter applied to the digital world, it can be hard for teens to tell what’s real and what isn’t, which comes at a tough time for them physically and emotionally.
We can benefit from social platforms to some extent, as they allow people to stay in touch with family and friends around the world. Still, the platforms have opened a “Pandora’s box” as they continue to evolve more quickly than we can research their impact.
In addition to limiting likes, Sperling suggests social platforms consider decreasing mass sharing. Regardless of how likely social media giants, are to change their ways, though, individuals can take control of their own behavior.
8. Why does Instagram limit likes?
A. To share more contents. B. To increase its popularity.
C. To ensure teens’ well-being. D. To reduce teens’ online time.
9. What does “Pandora’s box” in Paragraph 6 imply?
A. Social media can be double-edged. B. People benefit from social platforms.
C. People get boxes of gifts from social platforms. D. Social media opens a door for people to. see the world.
10. Which of the following does Sperling agree with?
A. Its lens. help teens to tell the real world.
B. Its unpredictable outcome attracts frequent visits.
C. It is helpful to teens with anxiety and depression.
D. It has a greater impact on female teens than male, teens.
11. What will the author most probably talk about next?
A. Advice on users’ controlling mass sharing. B. Reasons for teens’ posting addictions.
C. Negative effects of harmful interactions. D. Ways of social media giants’ management.
D
California’s Water Resources Control Board recently approved new regulations in a unanimous (一致同意的) vote — toilet or shower wastewater will be recycled and pumped into the public drinking water system.
In 2023, more than 97% of California has been in moderate to severe drought, while water suppliers are struggling to keep up. A 2022 water supply and demand report indicated that around 18% of water suppliers were at risk of facing potential shortages. “The reality is that anyone out there on Mississippi River and on Colorado River, and anyone out there taking drinking water downstream is already drinking ‘toilet to tap’,” said Esquivel, a director of the Board.
Early in the 1990s, the state was struggling to overcome the distaste its residents had toward drinking recycled water. Their efforts fizzled out when the phrase “toilet to tap” caught on and met with fierce resistance. The idea became too unpopular to be implemented. Despite the negative name, the regulations are the key to ensuring the supply of drinking water.
California’s new regulations would let water agencies to treat wastewater, and then put it back into the drinking water system. It has taken officials more than 10 years to develop these regulations, a process that included several studies by independent groups of scientists. To put the scheme into effect and build huge water recycling plants, however, water agencies say they will need to prove to people that recycled water is not only safe to drink but also under monitoring.
The new regulations require the wastewater be treated for all bacteria and viruses. In fact, the treatment is so intense that it removes all of the minerals that make fresh drinking water taste good. That means the minerals need to be added back at the end of the process. “What we have here are standards, science, and importantly monitoring that allow us to have safe pure water, and probably better in many instances,” said Esquivel. He added that it takes time and money to build these treatment centers. So, they will only be available for bigger cities at first.
12. What is the purpose of paragraph 2?
A. To highlight the current severe climate crisis in California.
B. To describe the role of California’s new water regulations.
C. To reveal the distribution of water resources in California.
D. To show the urgency of water supply reform in California.
13. What does the underlined phrase “fizzled out” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Failed. B. Worked. C. Stood out. D. Paid off.
14. What is critical for water agencies to conduct the recycling wastewater project?
A. Policies from the government. B. The recognition by the public.
C. Scientific research on wastewater. D. The construction of recycling plants.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A The minerals will be preserved in the treatment. B. The treatment centers will be built in rural areas.
C. The recycled water seems to be of better quality. D. Bacteria will be produced in the treating process.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的短文。
One sunny afternoon, Alice and I were walking home from school, lost in our girlish conversation. Alice, with her curious eyes sparkling, casually asked about my friendship with Judy. In a moment of thoughtlessness, I responded, “I only hung out with Judy because she asked me and I wasn’t keen on being friends with her. She was rather dull.” The unkind words just escaped my lips before I could catch them, like marbles rolling off a table.
Little did I know, Judy had been just around the corner somehow. When I glanced up, Judy appeared right in front of me, having accidentally overheard everything. All the color faded from her face. Her eyes widening with shock, without a word, she rushed off. Alice and I were left standing there, exchanging a look of shame and discomfort. I knew I should run after Judy and apologize, but with my mind blank, I was frozen. Alice’s face turned red, too. We walked home in silence, each step heavier than the last.
The following days were filled with awkwardness. I felt terrible for what I’d said and was dying to mend our friendship. An honest apology was desperately needed. But what should I say? Unintentional as I was, I indeed hurt Judy’s feelings. Every time I saw Judy in the halls or during classes, I’d quickly look away.
Fate threw me a curve ball in our speech class. On Tuesday, Mr. Thomas announced that we would be giving improvised(即兴的) speeches. He had written our topics on slips of paper and put them into a secret jar. Each of us was asked to blindly choose one without knowing what it would be about. I couldn’t say I was not nervous. As I reached into the jar of topics, my fingers closed around the slip that read, “Share your most embarrassing moment.” My heart pounded like a drum roll in my chest. It was as if the universe had come my way to give me a chance.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Knowing what I had to say I calmed myself down and walked to the platform.

That day, I came across a letter my mom wrote to her parents when she was young.

The platforms are designed to be addictive and are related to anxiety depression, and even physical illnesses.

细节理解题。根据文章第一段第一句话“The social media platform Instagram once made headlines for limiting likes in an effort to reduce the comparisons and hurt feelings resulting from attaching popularity to sharing content.(社交媒体平台Instagram曾因限制点赞,以减少因分享内容受欢迎而产生的比较和伤害感而成为头条新闻。)”可知,Instagram 限制点赞的目的在于减少攀比,减少感情受到伤害的可能性;根据文章第二段“Social media has a reinforcing nature. The platforms are designed to be addictive and are related to anxiety, depression, and even physical illnesses. But what makes users come back for more even when it can literally make them feel sick? (社交媒体具有强化的本质。这些平台旨在让人上瘾,并与焦虑、抑郁甚至身体疾病有关。但是,是什么让用户回来买更多的东西,即使它真的让他们感到恶心?)”可知,社交媒体与焦虑、抑郁甚至身体疾病的产生也息息相关。同时文章的谈论对象为青少年。因此,Instagram 此举有助于青少年健康地使用社交媒体以确保其身心健康。故选C。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段“We can benefit from social platforms to some extent, as they allow people to stay in touch with family and friends around the world. Still, the platforms have opened a “Pandora’s box” as they continue to evolve more quickly than we can research their impact.(在某种程度上,我们可以从社交平台中受益,因为它们允许人们与世界各地的家人和朋友保持联系。尽管如此,这些平台还是打开了一个“潘多拉的盒子”,因为它们的发展速度比我们研究它们的影响要快得多。)”前后两个句子的逻辑关系可知,社交媒体既有利也有弊。所以“潘多拉的盒子”意味着社交媒体可能是一把双刃剑。故选A。

A. The minerals will be preserved in the treatment. B. The treatment centers will be built in rural areas.
C. The recycled water seems to be of better quality. D. Bacteria will be produced in the treating process.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. C

A 2022 water supply and demand report indicated that around 18% of water suppliers were at risk of facing potential shortages. “The reality is that anyone out there on Mississippi River and on Colorado River, and anyone out there taking drinking water downstream is already drinking ‘toilet to tap’,” said Esquivel, a director of the Board.(2023年,加州超过97%的地区处于中度至重度干旱状态,而供水商正在努力跟上。
根据划线词后文“when the phrase “toilet to tap” caught on and met with fierce resistance”可知, “toilet to tap”这个词出现时遭到激烈抵制,这个理念太不受欢迎以至于无法付诸实践,即失败了。故划线词fizzled out意为“失败”。故选A。
【14题详解】
推理判断题,根据第四段“To put the scheme into effect and build huge water recycling plants, however, water agencies say they will need to prove to people that recycled water is not only safe to drink but also under monitoring.(然而,为了实施该计划并建设大型水循环厂,水务部门表示,他们需要向人们证明,再生水不仅可以安全饮用,而且还需要受到监控)”可知,水务机构进行废水循环再造计划的关键是公众的认可。故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“What we have here are standards, science, and importantly monitoring that allow us to have safe pure water, and probably better in many instances(我们现在拥有的是标准、科学和重要的监测,让我们拥有安全纯净的水,在许多情况下可能会更好)”可推知,循环饮用水质量可能会更好。故选C。

Let’s face it, we live in a world where instant satisfaction is the norm (标准). But what if we told you that delaying that satisfaction and putting in some good, honest sweat can actually be beneficial? It’s true! ____16____

【答案】Aimed at helping the students from poverty-stricken areas, the Student Union launched a grand Charity Sale last Friday at our school’s stadium, which witnessed the kindness and generosity of all the students and teachers present.
As scheduled, the activity began at 3:00 p.m., lasting three hours. What came first was a moving speech delivered by a volunteer, mirroring the authentic life of the needy students and kindling the kindness. What subsequently followed was the exciting sales section where many second-hand items, ranging from electronic devices to old fancy clothes, were sold at a pretty low price. So enthusiastic were our schoolmates and teachers that all goods were snapped up within hours. All the money raised would be sent to the Red Cross and distributed to those needy students.
This Charity Sale proved successful and meaningful. Not only did we students promote our social responsibilities, but we also understood every bit of our kindness could pile up enormous strength.

第二节(满分25分)
注意:

That day marked a turning point.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Knowing what I had to say, I calmed myself down and walked to the platform. I took a deep breath and began. With my voice shaking, I spoke of my inconsiderate behaviour, deep regret and the upsetting result without exposing Judy’s name. After finishing my heartfelt speech, with sweat flowing down my face, I didn’t dare to expect my classmates’ response. To my surprise, they applauded for my sincerity. Even Mr. Thomas praised my courage to admit my fault and apologize publicly. Back to my seat, I stole a look at Judy and amazingly found she was also looking at me with tears.
That day marked a turning point. Although Judy and I never directly talked about that unpleasant events, our interactions slowly returned to normal. We laughed and chatted again, as if a silent forgiveness had been granted. I was never proud of my bravery in that speech class. Instead, I knew for sure it was an experience to be modestly thankful for. Here are the lessons I have carried close to my heart ever since: Speaking ill of others plant seeds of regret and true friendships deserve the respect of honest words and open hearts.
