Somewhere in California, just up a hill from the beach is a high school, where students will meet before traveling to neighboring San Clemente High School on a Saturday fora 2-mile walk to raise money to build a well in a Kenyan village.
Most Kenyans live where clean water is hard to access. The good news is that water that falls in the rainy season is stored far underground, sometimes as deep as 900 feet. But bringing it to the surface can be a challenge. Sometimes, it requires heavy-duty equipment. Shallower wells are less costly but still require manpower and technology to work. A single well can supply water to an entire village, and this can be life-changing.
Weeks before the first annual Healing Hands for Water Walk Fundraiser event in 2012, students walked in the beach town and asked for donations from businesses. They covered a lot more distance than the 2 miles they would cover during the event as student organizers Branner Grimsley, Klara Gundelach and Solveig Erngren pounded on the boardwalk. “But it was worth it to make a difference by helping these people in Africa,” Grimsley said.
Standing on the boardwalk and looking out over the sand to the horizon and beyond, you can see a lifeline reaching from a few dedicated kids to a similar group of kids in an African village. The connection was hard to imagine at first but now seems so real. Students on both sides of the world walk under the same sun. On other days, they would have different places to go, but today, they walk for the same reason: to share the bond of being one human family.
In another Kenyan village, a well was completed. As the villagers excitedly operated the hand pump, the anticipation built. Within minutes, a trickle of clean water flowed, then a gush. It was a miracle in such a dry village. Buckets were filled, and children splashed water. The tears of joy flowed as easily as the well water.
1. What can we know about building wells in Kenya from paragraph 2?
A. It’s costly and useless. B. It’s easy and interesting

B. To show the difficulty of the event.
C. To share the bond of the human family.
D. To highlight the significance of the event.
3. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The excitement of building a well.
B. The requirement for completing a well.
C. The joyous sight of drawing water from a well.
D. The quality of the water from a local village’s well.
4 Which of the following may be the best title for the text?

A study led by UC Riverside (UCR) atmospheric scientists predicts that unchecked carbon emissions(排放物) will force tropical rains to shift northward in the coming decades, which would profoundly impact the regions near the Earth's equator.
The northward rain shift is caused by complex atmospheric changes. These changes are driven by carbon emissions, which in turn influence the formation of tropical convergence (汇集) zones. Those zones are essentially atmospheric engines that drive about a third of the world’s rainfall, which Antony P. Thomas, a professor of climate change and sustainability at UCR reported in a paper published in the journal Nature Climate Change.
Tropical regions on either side the equator such as central African nations, northern South America, and Pacific island states would be the most affected. Major crops in these regions include coffee, cocoa, palm oil, bananas, sugarcane, tea, mangoes, and pineapples.
Tropical rainforests can have as much as 14 feet of rain a year. “The rainfall change is enormous,” Antony said. “It's a very heavy rainfall region. So, a small shift will cause big changes in the economy of the societies. It will affect many regions.”
Antony and his colleagues used advanced computer models to predict the atmospheric influence of carbon dioxide emissions from continued burning of fossil fuels and other sources.” This climate model included many components of the atmosphere, ocean, sea ice, and land. All these components are interacting with each other,” he said. “Basically, we try to simulate the real world. In the model, we can increase our carbon dioxide emissions from pre-industrial levels to much higher levels.”
The analysis accounted for how carbon emissions influence the amount of radiant energy at the top of atmosphere. It also considered the changes in sea ice, water vapor and cloud formation. These and other factors resulted in conditions that push the rain- forming convergence zones northward by as much as 0.2 degrees on average.
5. What may be the main cause of the rain shift?
A. The rainforests. B. Carbon emissions.
C. The Earth's equator. D. Economic growth.
6. How does Antony feel about the rain shift?
A. Confused. B. Grateful. C. Worried. D. Indifferent.
7. Which word can best describe the study?
A. Comprehensive. B. Widespread. C. Fruitful. D. Historic.
8. What can be inferred from the text?
A. The rain shift is unrelated to human activities.
B. The rain shift threatens equatorial agriculture.
C. The study’s computer models were not precise enough.
D. The impact of the rain shift will be limited to remote areas.
C
Everyone is worried about the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in health care. Opinion pieces debate the ability of AI to manage patient needs. Doctors are alternately criticizing and advocating for how it can be used in their practices, and patients are questioning how it will impact their quality of care and their bills. But the reality is that the big bad wolf at the door of the health care industry isn’t the unknown of machine learning—it’s the very real threat of innovation leading the charge without doctors controlling the direction.
Trust forms the bedrock of an ethical (道德的) health care system, which creates an environment that prioritizes the well-being of the patient above all else. Bu as health care startups (初创公司) attempt to reshape the delivery of patient care, major concerns have emerged regarding the prioritization of business interests over patient outcomes.
Innovation is the key to promising new treatments and cures that will ultimately change the lives of millions—but the lack of provider involvement in new health care businesses is putting patients in grave danger.
Health care is more complex than any other field, and demands the highest standards when it comes to ethical practices. There is no room for trial and error when human lives are on the line, nor is it acceptable to misuse private patient data for profit-driven purposes. Yet we’re seeing new business models grow at alarming rates without regard for ethical health care practices. It’s this “growth at all costs” attitude that blurs the lines between profitability and patient outcomes. Investors and executives are putting themselves in positions of power without any strategic advising from an experienced medical provider.
The modern-day patient has evolved significantly—individuals are showing up to appointments having done extensive research, and not always on reliable platforms. Patients must be mindful of what information they are giving out and the associated comfort level of it being shared. Medical history can have unexpected results for your entire life. Could the release of certain information impact your family, job, or career? The provider’s job is to advocate for the patient. This includes demanding transparency regarding data handling and security rules, challenging questionable marketing claims, and ensuring businesses prioritize evidence-based medicine and patient safety.
So, we have to make full use of a provider’s influence and experience, ensuring they are used to promote patient well-being and protect their interests at every turn. As trusted custodians (管理人) of patient data, health care providers bear the responsibility of ensuring that the business prioritizes privacy protection and obeys data security rules. At the same time, startup companies must take steps to ensure data security and patient-centric ethical practices with medical professionals in advisory and decision-making positions.
9. What leads to the author’s concerns about the role of AI in health care?
A. The ability of AI to meet patients’ needs.
B. The lack of doctors’ guidance in practice.
C. Doctors’ criticism of AI in their practices.
D. Patients’ complaints about the quality of their care.
10. What does the underlined word “blurs” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Confuses. B. Links. C. Marks. D. Balances.
11. It is implied in this passage that we should ________.
A. limit the development of AI in health care startups
B. encourage doctors to be equipped with AI technologies
C. hold a critical view towards innovation in the health care area
D. inform patients of the threat of AI technologies in health care businesses
12. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. How Is Innovation Advocating for Patients?
B. How Is Innovation Influencing People’s Lives?
C. How Are Some Health Care Startups Putting Patients at Risk?
D. How Are Some Health Care Startups Developing AI Technologies?

— Get to know some of the mammals that call Yellowstone home
Bison
Bison can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and are herbivores Despite their size, they are very mobile and can run up to 30 mph and jump up to six feet vertically. In1902, America’s wild bison had decreased to only two dozen due to overhunting. Conservation efforts increased the Yellowstone bison population to 4,800 in 2023. See them in Hayden, Lamar and Pelican valleys.
Gray Wolf
Gray wolves had gone extinct in Yellowstone until 14 were reintroduced in 1995. Today, approximately 108 wolves live here. These social animals live in groups and can be gray, white or black. They hunt elk, deer and bison near dawn and dusk thanks to their excellent night vision. For your best chance of seeing them, head to Lamar or Hayden valleys or Blacktail Deer Plateau in the early morning.
Elk
Up to 20,000 elk summer in Yellowstone, but most move to lower elevations in the winter months. Elk are a large member of the deer family and can be identified by their size and white rumps. Mating season, known as“ the rut”, occurs each fall when male elk fight with each other for females. It’s characterized by their haunting bugling sound. In the summer, see them in Cascade Meadows, Madison Canyon and Lamar Valley.
Grizzly Bear
One of two species of bears in Yellowstone, grizzlies are big. They can weigh up to 700 pounds and have a distinctive hump between their shoulders. Grizzlies are omnivores and will eat bugs, plants, fish and mammals. Approximately 150 live in Yellowstone and if you’ re lucky, you may spot them in the Hayden and Lamar valleys, north of Mount Washington and between Fishing Bridge and the East Entrance.

Having recently transferred to the high school, Emily felt like a ghost drifting through the hallways — unseen and unheard. Struggling to adapt to her new environment, she found herself isolated. A group of popular girls, led by Jessica, frequently made fun of her. They even threw insults at her intelligence, as if excelling in school was something to be ashamed of. To avoid adding more stress to her already overworked parents, Emily bottled up her feelings, swallowing the daily suffering like bitter medicine.
One gray afternoon, after the final bell had rung and the last echoes of chatter had faded, Emily found her books and notebooks scattered in a dirty bin. With embarrassment burning her cheeks, tears welled up in her eyes, blurring her vision as she knelt to gather her belongings. Just then, Lily, a classmate who had always noticed Emily’s struggles but never intervened, approached and knelt beside her. “They’re just trying to feel better by making others feel worse,” Lily said softly, her voice like a gentle breeze on a suffocating day. Then, she handed Emily her notebooks, offering an understanding smile.
Though touched by Lily’s kindness, Emily still felt the shadow hanging over her. Jessica and her friends tripped Emily in the hallways, pushed her in the lunch line, and even hid her gym shoes, laughing as she crazily searched for them. Each incident added to the weight pressing down on Emily’s chest. She began pretending to be sick, hoping to escape the torture that turned her school life into a daily nightmare.
In an English class, the teacher assigned an essay titled “My Wish”. Emily poured her heart into the assignment and wrote about her longing for a true friend and the pain of feeling like an outsider, baring her soul on the page, exposing the raw wounds and the bullying she had endured. The teacher, noticing the weight of her words, realized what Emily had been going through. The school responded swiftly, taking measures to address the effects of bullying and organizing counseling sessions to help Emily rebuild her confidence. Throughout this time, Lily stayed by Emily’s side, becoming her pillar of strength.

D. How Are Some Health Care Startups Developing AI Technologies?
B 10. A 11. C 12. C
根据第一段“But the reality is that the big bad wolf at the door of the health care industry isn’t the unknown of machine learning—it’s the very real threat of innovation leading the charge without doctors controlling the direction. (但现实情况是,医疗保健行业门口的大恶狼并不是机器学习的未知领域,而是在没有医生控制方向的情况下引领创新的真正威胁。)”可知,作者感到担忧是因为实践中缺乏医生的指导。故选B。
【10题详解】
词义猜测题。根据前文“Yet we’re seeing new business models grow at alarming rates without regard for ethical health care practices. (然而,我们看到新的商业模式正在以惊人的速度增长,而不考虑道德医疗实践。)”和后文“Investors and executives are putting themselves in positions of power without any strategic advising from an experienced medical provider. (投资者和高管们在没有经验丰富的医疗服务提供商提供任何战略建议的情况下,把自己放在了权力的位置上。)”可知,画线句表示:正是这种“不惜一切代价增长”的态度模糊了盈利能力和患者治疗结果之间的界限。bur的意思为“模糊”,blur和confuse意思相近,故选A。
【11题详解】
推理判断题,根据第五段的“The provider’s job is to advocate for the patient. This includes demanding transparency regarding data handling and security rules, challenging questionable marketing claims, and ensuring businesses prioritize evidence-based medicine and patient safety. (提供者的工作是为患者辩护。这包括要求数据处理和安全规则的透明度,质疑可疑的营销主张,并确保企业优先考虑循证医学和患者安全。)”可知,文章暗示我们应对医疗保健领域的创新持批判态度。故选C。
【12题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段的“Bu as health care startups(初创公司) attempt to reshape the delivery of patient care, major concerns have emerged regarding the prioritization of business interests over patient outcomes. (但是,当医疗保健初创公司试图重塑患者护理的交付方式时,主要的担忧已经出现,即商业利益优先于患者结果。)”并通读全文可知,文章主要讨论了医疗初创公司如何通过创新来重塑患者护理,但缺乏医疗提供者的参与,将患者置于危险之中。因此,文章的主旨是探讨一些医疗初创公司如何使患者处于危险之中,所以最好的标题是C选项“一些医疗初创公司如何使患者处于危险之中”。故选C。

Into the Wild
— Get to know some of the mammals that call Yellowstone home
Bison
Bison can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and are herbivores Despite their size, they are very mobile and can run up to 30 mph and jump up to six feet vertically.
Elk
Up to 20000 elk summer in Yellowstone, but most move to lower elevations in the winter months.

根据第一段第三句话“In 1902, America’s wild bison had decreased to only two dozen due to overhunting.(1902年,由于过度捕猎,美国的野牛数量减少到只有24头。)”
根据第二段第三句“These social animals live in groups and can be gray, white or black.(这些群居动物生活在群体中,有灰色、白色或黑色。)”
根据Bison部分中的“See them in Hayden, Lamar and Pelican valleys.(在海登,拉马尔和鹈鹕山谷可以看到它们。)”、Gray Wolf部分中的“For your best chance of seeing them, head to Lamar or Hayden valleys or Blacktail Deer Plateau in the early morning.(想要看到它们的最佳机会,请在清晨前往拉马尔或海登山谷或黑尾鹿高原。)”、Elk部分中的“In the summer, see them in Cascade Meadows, Madison Canyon and Lamar Valley.(夏天,你可以在喀斯喀特草地、麦迪逊峡谷和拉马尔山谷看到它们。)”和Grizzly Bear部分中的“Approximately 150 live in Yellowstone and if you’ re lucky, you may spot them in the Hayden and Lamar valleys, north of Mount Washington and between Fishing Bridge and the East Entrance.(大约有150只生活在黄石公园,如果你幸运的话,你可以在海登和拉马尔山谷、华盛顿山以北、钓鱼桥和东入口之间看到它们。)” 故选A项。
The first time I flew was to visit my recently married sister in Oklahoma in 1956. I was 16, and I drove with my parents from our home in Sanger, California, to Los Angeles, where we boarded a huge airplane. ____16____
Mom and Dad sat across the long passage from me. The seat next to mine was empty. ____17____ As I wondered whether my seatmate would be friendly, down the passage came a tall, untidy man who took the spot. He was handsome, with longish hair, and was casually dressed in jeans. I was not sure whether my rugged partner was going to be the nice, friendly conversation partner I’d hoped for on this trip.
The plan took off, and my heart pounded with excitement. Soon the man and I started chatting. ____18____ Mr. Parker couldn’t have been nicer, and I introduced him to my parents, who weren’t nearly as impressed as I was.
____19____ But to my dismay and disappointment, I began to have butterflies in the stomach. As the plane began to go down, I felt worse, and told Mr. Parker I was going to throw up. He grabbed an airsickness bag and held it for me as I gagged and spit up. The plane landed, but I didn’t get to see my first landing because my head was in a bag.
I still felt sick as we left the plane. ____20____ I thanked him for his assistance, and we said goodbye. I’ve thought back many times to this story, one of several highlights in my life, and it still makes me smile. And I wonder if Mr. Parker ever told anyone about how he held an airsickness bag for a teenager on her first short airplane flight.
A. The plane flew unstably.
B. The flight was fairly short.
C. At least I thought it was.
D. Mr. Baker held me and asked how I felt.
E. There was a big “reserved” sign which had been laid on it.
F. I felt disappointed that I would be feeling lonely during the whole flight.
G. I was flying next to the actor Fess Parker, famous for playing Davy Crockett in the TV series.
C 17. E 18. G 19. B 20. D
由前文“The first time I flew was to visit my recently married sister in Oklahoma in 1956. (我第一次坐飞机是1956年去俄克拉荷马州看望我刚结婚的妹妹。)”可知,文章第一段介绍了故事的时代背景是在1956年,16岁的我第一次乘坐飞机,当时的我眼中这架飞机是很大的,烘托出女孩第一次乘飞机的新奇和激动的心理。空处位于全文第一段的末尾,是对前面的一句话进行解释与强调。故C选项“At least I thought it was. (至少我认为是这样。)”符合题意。故选C。
【17题详解】
由前文“The seat next to mine was empty. (我旁边的座位是空的)”可知,我旁边是个空位。由后文“As I wondered whether my seatmate would be friendly, down the passage came a tall, untidy man who took the spot. (当我想知道我的邻座是否会友好时,走廊那头来了一个身材高大、不整洁的男人,他坐了下来。)”可知,这个男人坐在了作者旁边的空位上。空处承上启下,E项中的“it”指代上文中的“The seat next to mine”,“a big “reserved” sign”和下文中的“ the spot”相呼应,说明作者旁边这个空着的位置是留着有人来坐的。故E选项“There was a big “reserved” sign which had been laid on it. (上面有一个很大的“保留”标志。)”符合语境,故选E。
【18题详解】
由后文“Mr. Parker couldn’t have been nicer, and I introduced him to my parents, who weren’t nearly as impressed as I was. (帕克先生再好不过了,我把他介绍给了我的父母,他们几乎没有我印象深刻。)”可知,空后直接称呼Mr. Parker,说明我已经知道了Mr. Parker的身份,因此空处应该表明Mr. Parker的身份信息。G选项“I was flying next to the actor Fess Parker, famous for playing Davy Crockett in the TV series. (我坐在演员费斯·帕克旁边,他以在电视剧中扮演戴维·克罗克特而闻名。)”符合语境。故选G。
【19题详解】
由后文“But to my dismay and disappointment, I began to have butterflies in the stomach. As the plane began to go down, I felt worse, and told Mr. Parker I was going to throw up. (但令我沮丧和失望的是,我开始感到紧张。飞机开始降落时,我感觉更糟了,我告诉帕克先生我要吐了。)”可知,But是表示转折的连词,引出转折含义。故B选项“The flight was fairly short. (飞行时间相当短。)”与后文构成逻辑转折关系,即:虽然飞行时间相当短,但令我沮丧失望的是我竟然晕机,胃不舒服想呕吐。故选B。
【20题详解】
由后文“I thanked him for his assistance, and we said goodbye. (我对他的帮助表示感谢,然后我们说再见。)”可知,空处表达的是Mr. Parker对我的关切。D选项“Mr. Baker held me and asked how I felt. (贝克先生扶着我并关切地问我感觉怎样。)”符合语境。故选D。

Emily’s recovery began to show signs of progress with Lily’s support. One afternoon, as Emily sat alone in the cafeteria, she noticed Lily approaching with her usual warm smile. Lily sat beside her, her presence like a steady anchor in Emily’s turbulent sea. Sharing her own experiences of feeling left out, Lily offered Emily both companionship and empathy. Bit by bit, Emily began to open up, revealing the fears that had weighed her down. For the first time in a long while, she felt a flicker of hope, realizing she didn’t have to carry everything by herself.
Also, the school’s ban on bullying made Jessica and her friends reflect. The memories of their past behavior haunted them with every reminder of Emily’s pain. After much contemplation, Jessica finally gathered the courage to apologize to Emily, her friends trailing behind. “Emily, we’re sorry,” Jessica said, her voice trembling with sincerity. Emily looked into their eyes, seeing the regret they carried. She knew forgiveness would take time, but this apology was a tentative first step. As Jessica and her friends walked away, a quiet calm settled over Emily, signaling the beginning of a new chapter, one of healing and understanding.
