Pre-reading
1 How does DDT reach the human body in the food chain?
a. When DDT is sprayed onto plants in order to kill insects, it is absorbed by the plants and subsequently consumed by animals; humans in turn eat those animals.
b. DDT also leaks (渗漏) through the soil and into rivers and lakes, where it contaminates fish consumed by humans.
2 What harm does DDT cause?
DDT is highly poisonous to living organism, including humans.
Activity 1
What led to the changes?
DDT was first produced in 1874.
Paul Hermann Muller, a Swiss Scientist, was awarded the 1948 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his 1939 discovery of insecticidal (杀虫的) qualities and use of DDT in the control of vector diseases (媒介传染病) such as malaria and yellow fever (黄热病).
Use of DDT began to be restricted in the 1960s, thanks in part to the public awareness raised by Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring (1962).
DDT was banned completely in the 1970s in many countries.
In September 2006, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared its support for the indoor use of DDT in African countries where malaria remains a major health problem
, citing that benefits of the pesticide outweigh the health and environmental risks.
