And I wonder, can we learn from a pile of rocks? Even the tallest mountains have worn down; none are as tall as they were 1,000 years ago.And much like a rock, I've found my attitude has softened and my desire to better understand others has expanded with each trip around the sun. Once I too was a sharp rock covered in pointy edges.Today, after decades of the waters of life coursing over me,my edges are softer and more understanding.I'm less likely to judge and more interested in learning how we can exist together. But I'm not a rock.I'm a human being filled with all the drama built into my DNA. Two years ago, while traveling in the Pacific Northwest, I watched a restaurant owner ask several people to leave for not wearing masks. Not forceful and not rude.On the door read a sign:“Please wear a mask before entering our restaurant. We don't like it either, but let's all do what we can to get through this together.” The group of young men wished to argue about the note. I sat watching, understanding both sides.I've been those guys before, using my youthful edges to chip away at the world. What I lost, however, was the ability to grow from experiences by looking through the eyes of others. In learning to be more open, I've also found more happiness and success. You can fit more rounded rocks in a jar than those with sharp edges. The former look for ways to adjust and make room for others; the latter never give an inch to accommodate others. Time, like the waters rolling against once sharp stones, changes us by washing away our resistance to seeing the world from another's point of view. I placed a rounded stone into my jacket pocket.Mother Nature is holding class again. 1.What does the author compare the rocks to? A.People's abilities. B.People's personalities. C.What nature offers us. D.Challenges we come across. 2.Why did the group of guys argue in the restaurant? A.They were dissatisfied with the owner's attitude to them. B.They were unwilling to do what the owner wished them to. C.They intended to skip out on the bill due to the poor service. D.They were not allowed to leave the restaurant for their rudeness. 3.What does the author want to tell us with this text? A.We should adjust to new conditions. B.Be brave when in the face of difficulties in life. C.It's unnecessary to consider the feelings of others. D.Being open and understanding brings you more happiness. 4.What might be the best title for the text? A.Changing with Time B.Learning from Nature C.Growing from Experiences D.Seeing from a Different Angle √ B The cultural products we create reflect the times we live in. “Works of popular culture, we reasoned, should reflect the extent to which nature occupies our collective consciousness (集体意识), ” says psychologist Dr Selin Kesebir. “If novelists, songwriters or film-makers have fewer encounters with nature these days than before, or if they don't expect their audiences to respond to it, nature would feature less frequently in their works.” The researchers drew up a list of 186 nature-related words belonging to four categories: general words relating to nature such as cloud, or sunrise; names of flowers; names of trees; and birds' names. Then they analyzed how often these occurred in the output of popular culture. They looked at English-language fiction, pop songs and film plots, each of which featured thousands of examples. The results were consistent across books, songs and movies. “The space taken by nature has been decreasing in the collective imagination and cultural conversation since the 1950s. Nature features significantly less in English popular culture today than it did in the first half of the 20th century,” says Dr Kesebir. Why? Some people suggest it's the growth of cities that has fuelled the change. “Urbanization swallows up natural areas and cuts people off from their natural surroundings,” says Dr Kesebir. But, she goes on, the growth rate of cities over the 20th century is gradual, but the data shows a marked change from the 1950s onwards. So it's not just the fact that fewer of us are living in rural areas that explains the decline. More likely, she believes, we're seeing the impact of technological change leading to more indoor recreational activities. Yes, TV, video games and the Internet are to blame. “These technologies may well have been substituted for nature as a source of joy, recreation and entertainment.” Books, songs and films shape our culture as well as reflecting it, says Dr Kesebir. “The declining cultural attention to nature means a muting of the message that nature is worth paying attention to and talking about. It also means a loss of opportunities to awaken curiosity, appreciation and awe for nature.” 5.How did the researchers conduct their study of popular culture? A.By having interviews. B.By doing field research. C.By analyzing collected data. D.By referring to previous studies. 根据文章第二段“The researchers drew up a list of 186 nature-related words belonging to four categories ...” 6.How did English popular culture change after the 1950s? A.It highlighted fictional stories. B.It caught the public's imagination. C.Its nature elements were greatly reduced. D.Its focus shifted from fiction to conversations. 根据文章第三段“Nature features significantly less in English popular culture today than it did in the first half of the 20th century”可知,20世纪50年代以后,自然在当今英国流行文化中的地位明显下降。 7.What's largely responsible for the change according to Dr Kesebir? A.Technology. B.The population. C.City development. D.The environment. 根据倒数第二段“These technologies may well have been substituted for nature as a source of joy, recreation and entertainment.” 8.What does the underlined word “muting” in the last paragraph probably mean? A.Explanation. B.Silence. C.Exchange. D.Emphasis. 根据画线单词下一句“It also means a loss of opportunities to awaken curiosity, appreciation and awe for nature.”可推测,画线单词指的应该是“The declining cultural attention to nature (文化对自然关注的减少)”,这意味着“nature is worth paying attention to and talking about (自然是值得关注和谈论的)”这一信息也“无人可知”。 Ⅱ. I always admired my grandmother Jenny's gardening skills. But it wasn't until a sunny afternoon in her backyard that I became interested in gardening myself. We were there to grow tomatoes. She handed me a tiny seedling (幼苗) and shared stories of her own grandmother doing the same. It's a family tradition! Over time, the tiny seedling had grown into a large tomato plant with many juicy red tomatoes. 9 We spent hours in her kitchen making delicious homemade sauce out of them. Just the smell alone brought back so many memories. My time in the garden with my grandma showed me that gardening is more than just a hobby. 10 The garden became something we both loved, bringing us closer together and creating a strong bond. If the garden is your favorite place, consider inviting other family members to join you in the dirt. It's a great way of bonding with people. 11 It has its tough moments, but the good thing is that every setback teaches us to be strong. Gardening is my personal therapist (治疗师). 12 Gardening has taught me patience, resilience, and the beauty of life's cycles. It's given me a sense of purpose and the joy of caring for something from seed to flower. In the garden, I've found comfort during difficult times and celebration during moments of success. 13 It offers a break from city life. It is a chance to grow as a gardener and person. And it brings the joy of watching life grow well under your care. A.I find joy and peace in it. B.It's a way to connect with our roots. C.The benefits of gardening are varied. D.Gardening is like painting with nature. E.I saw the moments as opportunities to learn. F.However, gardening isn't all sunshine and flowering roses. G.Harvesting those tomatoes with my grandma was a joy I won't forget. 9.选G 根据上文“Over time, the ... juicy red tomatoes.”及下文“We spent hours ... so many memories.” 10.选B 根据上文“My time in ... just a hobby.”及下文“The garden became ... a strong bond.” 11.选F 根据上文“If the garden ... bonding with people.”及下文“It has its ... to be strong.” 12.选A 根据上文“Gardening is my personal therapist (治疗师).”及下文“Gardening has taught ... seed to flower.” 13.选C 根据下文“It offers a ... under your care.”
