Kiska, the last captive (圈养的) killer whale in Canada — also known as “the loneliest whale in the world” — has died, according to local media.
The whale, believed to be 47 years old, died on March 9, 2023. Ontario’s Solicitor General Ministry spokesperson Brent Ross confirmed to CBC. Kiska, who spent over four decades in captivity, lived at Marineland, a zoo and amusement park in Niagara Falls, after being captured in Icelandic waters in 1979 alongside Keiko, the star of the movie Free Willy. Marineland said that Kiska’s health had declined in recent weeks.
The news comes four years after the country officially banned whales and dolphins from being bred or held in captivity. However, marine mammals like Kiska that were already held in captivity would remain so, according to the new law. Kiska’s death marks the end of captive whales in Canada.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said Kiska “spent her final years isolated in a tank, swimming in endless circles or sometimes floating listlessly.”
Kiska’s life of continued isolation led the Whale Sanctuary Project to describe her as “the loneliest whale in the world.”
Both animal rights groups reported that Kiska died of a bacterial infection. Ross told CBC that animal welfare officials had conducted a necropsy (尸检) of the mammal.
Kiska underwent several hardships while living at the amusement park, according to PETA.These included the deaths of all five of her children and the departure of her sole tankmate Ikaika in 2011. Videos of Kiska slamming her head against her tank wall multiple times began circulating on social media in 2021.
Kiska was one of the last survivors of the Icelandic captures back in the 1970s. She lived the last 12 years of her life completely along, no other whales or in fact any other species were there to keep her company.
“It is heartbreaking to know that Kiska will never have the chance to be relocated to a whale reserve and experience the freedom that she so deeply deserved.” Camille Labchuk, executive director of Animal justice, told CBC.
There are at least 55 killer whales being held in captivity in marine parks around the world, according to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation. Killer whales are known to be very social mammals and are not suitable for captivity. Chronic stress can weaken the immune system and physiology of captive killer whales, leading to illness and even death.
24.Which of the following statement is true about Kiska?
A.She died as the last captive killer whale in the world.
B.She was captured in the ocean more than 40 years ago.
C.She was a star in a film called Free Willy.
D.She should have been set free according to a new law passed in 2019.
25.Why Kiska was referred to as “the loneliest whale in the world”?
A.Because Kiska’s death marks the end of captive whales in Canada.
B.Because Kiska was kept alone after a bacterial infection.
C.Because Kiska lived the last 12 years of her life without company.
D.Because all five of Kiska’s children died ahead of her.
26.What does the underlined word listlessly probably means in the text?
A.Without enthusiasm. B.Without destination.
C.Without breath. D.Without effort.
27.What is the best title of the text?
A.It’s time we stop catching killer whales
B.The death of a killer whale leads to a new law in Canada
C.Kiska, the last survivor of the Icelandic captures, has died
D.Kiska, “the loneliest whale in the world”, dies in Canada

Until recently, several lines of evidence—from fossils, genetics, and archaeology—suggested that humans first moved from Africa into Eurasia (the land of Europe and Asia) about 60,000 years ago, quickly replacing other early human species, such as Neanderthals and Denisovans, that they may have met along the way.
However, a series of recent discoveries, including 100,000-year-old human teeth found in a cave in China, have clouded this straightforward statement. And the latest find, a prehistoric jawbone at the Misliya Cave in Israel dating back to nearly 200,000 years ago, which is almost twice as old as any Homo sapiens(智人) remains discovered outside Africa, where our species was thought to have originated from, has added a new and unexpected twist.
The find suggests that there were multiple waves of migration across Europe and Asia and could also mean that modern humans in the Middle East were interacting, and possibly mating, with other human species for tens of thousands of years. “Misliya breaks the mould (模式) of existing assumptions of the timing of the first known Homo sapiens in these regions,” said Chris Stringer, head of human origins at the Natural History Museum in London. “It’s important in removing a long-lasting constraint(限制) on our thinking.”
Prof. Hershkovitz, who led the work at Tel Aviv University said, “What Misliya tells us is that modern humans left Africa not 100,000 years ago, but 200,000 years ago. This is a revolution in the way we understand the evolution of our own species.” He also added that the record now indicates that humans probably travelled beyond the African continent whenever the climate allowed it. “I don’t believe there was one big departure from Africa,” he said. “I think that throughout hundreds of thousands of years humans were coming in and out of Africa all the time.”
The discovery means that modern humans were potentially meeting and interacting during a longer period with other ancient human groups, providing more opportunity for cultural and biological exchanges. It also raises interesting questions about the fate of the earliest modern human pioneers. Genetic data from modern-day populations around the world strongly suggest that everyone outside Africa can trace their ancestors back to a group that left around 60,000 years ago. So the inhabitants of the Misliya Cave are probably not the ancestors of anyone alive today, and scientists can only guess why their branch of the family tree came to an end.
28.What does the Misliya discovery suggest?
A.Our ancestors were powerful and kind of agreesive.
B.Our ancestors left Africa much earlier than thought.
C.The origins of modern humans are from Europe.
D.Homo sapiens, Neanderthals and Denisovans once lived together.
29.What does the underlined word “they” refer to in Para. One?
A.Early human species living in Europe
B.Neanderthals and Denisovans.
C.People first moving from Africa into Eurasia.
D.Ancient people living in Africa all the time.
30.What can be learned from Prof. Hershkovitz’s words in Para. 4?
A.Climate was a big factor in human migration from Africa.
B.There was a large-scale human migration from Africa.
C.Human migration was occasional in Africa 200,000 years ago.
D.The Misliya find is against our understanding of human evolution.
31.What can we infer about those living in Misliya 200,000 years ago according to the last paragraph?
A.They were ancestors of people living in China.
B.They left evidence for their mysterious disappearance in history.
C.They probably contributed little to present-day people genetically.
D.They could be traced by their remains left on their travelling route.
D

Farming is destroying the planet, but there could be a much more environmentally friendly way to feed ourselves: using renewable energy to turn carbon dioxide into food. “This is becoming a reality,” says Pasi Vainikka at Solar Foods, a company that is building the first commercial-scale factory that will be able to make food directly from CO2.
There can be no doubt that immediate attention to find greener ways to grow food is required. Conventional agriculture, including organic farming, causes damage to the environment in many ways. It requires a lot of land, leading to habitat loss and deforestation. It is also the source of a third of all greenhouse gas emissions and releases other pollutants. It isn’t very efficient, either. Crops typically transform less than 1 percent of light energy into usable biomass (生物量).
Instead, Solar Foods plans to avoid photosynthesis (光合作用) altogether, and grow bacteria that use hydrogen as their source of energy. At the factory, renewable electricity will be used to split water to produce hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen will be added to large containers, where the bacteria grow, along with CO2 and ammonia (氨气). The end result will be a yellow powder called Solein.
Solein is made of bacterial cells and is up to 70 percent protein. It can be used as an ingredient in all kinds of foods. “We are aiming at replacing animal-sourced proteins, which we think have the highest environmental impact,” says Vainikka.
Compared with plant crops, Solein will use 100 times less water per kilogram of protein produced, 20 times less land and emit a fifth as much CO2, according to Solar Foods. There are other benefits, too: factories could be situated anywhere in the world and production won’t be affected by weather conditions.
“With Solar Foods and other companies scaling up their systems, this is truly beginning a new era of agriculture,” says Dorian Leger at Connectomix Bio in Germany. “I think these trends are exciting and will help bend the carbon curve as well as lead to improved global food supply security.”
32.What is the author’s purpose in mentioning conventional agriculture in paragraph 2?
A.To demonstrate its influence on crops. B.To compare different farming methods.
C.To highlight the urgent need for alternatives. D.To provide an example of agricultural types.
33.What is mainly presented in paragraph 3 concerning Solein?
A.Its production process. B.Its storage condition.
C.Its ingredient materials. D.Its investment potential.
34.All of the following are the features of Solein except __________.
A.it is protein-rich B.its production is weather sensitive
C.it is resource-efficient D.its production is location-independent
35.Which statement would Dorian Leger probably agree with?
A.The use of Solein may help reduce carbon emissions.
B.Solein will dominate the agricultural development.
C.Solein can help achieve global food safety.
D.The prospect of Solein remains to be seen.

There are many customary differences between the West and the East, of which are some of China’s eating habits, which many Westerners would find quite hard to understand. 36
Not eating food dropped on a table
I’ve seen the disgust (恶心) in people’s faces here when I’ve dropped food on the table only to then pick it up and eat it. 37 Our thought is, “A tabletop has had nothing but food on it. No one walks on it, sits on it or throws garbage on it. Why is it considered so dirty?” We don’t get it.
38
Westerners don’t want their food near the floor. Dust, germs, etc. are far more likely to get into the rice. I’ve been in several restaurants and nearly everyone I’ve seen puts their rice cookers on the floor.
Eating dessert before a meal
Every Western child’s dream would be to live in China for the purpose that he/she could eat the dessert before they eat their main meal. I’m not sure about this Western tradition of eating dessert last. In China, it doesn’t matter. 39 Westerners would find that very strange.
Drinking hot water with your meal
Often, it has been my experience that many. Chinese will not have a drink (water, tea, etc. ) with a meal. But, when they do, it is usually hot water. 40 However, we westerners like cold water or cold drinks.
A.Putting rice cookers on the floor.
B.The following are just some of them
C.Having noodles or rice every day.
D.Americans do eat a lot of hamburgers.
E.You can have ice cream before your meal.

When I was a kid in Pennsylvania, my family rehabilitated (康复治疗) wild animals. I grew up with raccoons (浣熊) and a fox running around the house. We would go travelling to Bermuda and I would watch the whales off the shore. I fell in love with them and wanted to know more about what they got up to underwater. Now I’ve been studying whales for more than 30 years and am the president of the Center for Cetacean Research and Conservation.
In 2017, I was on a boat around Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, working on a film about whale conservation. The crew wanted to get more footage (镜头) of me in the water with the humpback whales — I often slip in quietly to record their behaviour for research. Seeing a couple of humpbacks in the distance, I slid off the boat wearing a snorkel mask and a GoPro, and swam towards them.
As I was approaching, one of the male humpbacks came right up to me, nuzzling (用鼻爱抚) me with his head and pushing me through the water. I felt a rush of pleasure mixed with fear. I tried to keep calm, never taking my eyes off him. Then the whale swam underneath me and lifted me out of the water on his flipper (鳍). I signalled to the boat, then — swoosh — I was pushed back under.
After seven and a half minutes of being pushed around by the humpback, I saw what I thought was a second, smaller whale. But then I noticed the tail — whales move theirs up and down, and this one was moving side to side. I realized with horror that it belonged to a huge, 18ft tiger shark! Tiger sharks are known to attack people, sometimes fatally (致命的).

One possible version:
The shark had arched its body in attack mode. I yelled out to the boat but, before I knew it, the whale had positioned me on the front of his head and was gracefully racing through the water. It was terrifying and yet peaceful. Within 10 minutes, he had safely returned me to the boat and out of the shark’s way. I think the whale had seen the shark and was trying to push me away from it. My emotions were high by the time I took off my mask and I felt love, concern and care from the whale.
I told the whale that I loved him and thanked him as he was to swim off. He looked me in the eye. I slid overboard and swam towards him; I rubbed his face and he extended his pectoral fin. I swam back to the boat and he stayed around for about 20 minutes after I got back on it. Then he disappeared underwater. It was a touching moment. I gasped in relief and then proceeded to sob, overcome. I felt more motivated than ever to protect these beings.

【答案】24.B 25.C 26.A 27.D
根据第二段“Kiska, who spent over four decades in captivity, lived at Marineland, a zoo and amusement park in Niagara Falls, after being captured in Icelandic waters in 1979 alongside Keiko, the star of the movie Free Willy(在 1979 年于冰岛水域被捕后,Kiska与电影Free Willy的主角Keiko一起,被关在尼亚加拉大瀑布的海洋陆地公园这一动物园和游乐园,度过了四十多年的囚禁生涯)”可知,Kiska是40多年前在海洋中被捕获的。故选B项。
根据第四段“People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said Kiska “spent her final years isolated in a tank, swimming in endless circles or sometimes floating listlessly.”(善待动物组织(PETA)说,Kiska“最后几年被隔离在一个水箱里,在无尽的圈子里游泳,有时无精打采地漂浮着。”)”以及第五段“Kiska’s life of continued isolation led the Whale Sanctuary Project to describe her as “the loneliest whale in the world.”(Kiska一直与世隔绝的生活使得鲸鱼保护区项目将她描述为“世界上最孤独的鲸鱼”)”和第八段“She lived the last 12 years of her life completely along, no other whales or in fact any other species were there to keep her company.(她在生命的最后12年完全独自度过,没有其他鲸鱼,事实上也没有其他物种陪伴她)”可知,因为Kiska在生命的最后12年里没有陪伴,所以被称为“世界上最孤独的鲸鱼”。故选C项。
故选A项。
根据第一段“Kiska, the last captive (圈养的) killer whale in Canada --- also known as “the loneliest whale in the world” ----has died, according to local media.(据当地媒体报道,加拿大最后一头被圈养的虎鲸Kiska——也被称为“世界上最孤独的鲸鱼”——去世了)”以及通读全文可知,本文主要报道了加拿大最后一只圈养虎鲸Kiska的死亡,所以D项“Kiska, “the loneliest whale in the world”, dies in Canada(“世界上最孤独的鲸鱼”Kiska在加拿大死亡)”是本文最好的标题。故选D项。

【答案】28.B 29.C 30.A 31.C
根据第一段中的“humans first moved from Africa into Eurasia(欧亚大陆)about 60,000 years ago (人类第一次从非洲迁移到欧亚大陆大约是在6万年前)” 和第二段中的“a prehistoric jawbone at the Misliya Cave in Israel(以色列)dating back to nearly 200 ,000 years ago.…twist(在以色列Misliya洞穴发现的一块史前颌骨可以追溯到近20万年前,几乎是在非洲以外发现的智人遗骸的两倍,而非洲被认为是人类起源的地方,这给人类带来了新的意想不到的变化。)”
根据第一段中“Until recently, several lines of evidence—from fossils, genetics, and archaeology—suggested that humans first moved from Africa into Eurasia (the land of Europe and Asia) about 60,000 years ago, quickly replacing other early human species, such as Neanderthals and Denisovans”可知,直到最近,来自化石、遗传学和考古学的几条线索表明,大约6万年前,人类第一次从非洲进入欧亚大陆(欧洲和亚洲的大陆),迅速取代了其他早期人类物种,如尼安德特人和丹尼索瓦人;由此可知,此处的they指代前文的 humans first moved from Africa into Eurasia(第一批从非洲到欧亚大陆的人)。故选C。
根据倒数第二段中的“He also added that the record now indicates that humans probably travelled beyond the African continent whenever the climate allowed it ” 可知,Hershkovitz教授还补充说,现在的记录表明,只要气候允许,人类可能就会走出非洲大陆。 故选A。
根据最后一段中的“everyone outside Africa can trace their ancestors back to a group that left around 60,000 years ago. So the inhabitants of the Misliya Cave are probably not the ancestors of anyone alive today”可知,非洲以外的每个人都可以追溯到大约6万年前留下的一个群体的祖先。

【答案】32.C 33.A 34.B 35.A
根据文章第二段“Conventional agriculture, including organic farming, causes damage to the environment in many ways. It requires a lot of land, leading to habitat loss and deforestation. It is also the source of a third of all greenhouse gas emissions and releases other pollutants. It isn’t very efficient, either.(传统农业,包括有机农业,在许多方面对环境造成破坏。它需要大量的土地,导致栖息地丧失和森林砍伐。它也是三分之一的温室气体排放和其他污染物的来源。这也不是很有效。)”可知,作者在第二段提到传统农业的目的是为了凸显新方法的迫切需要,故选C。
33.主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“Instead, Solar Foods plans to avoid photosynthesis (光合作用) altogether, and grow bacteria that use hydrogen as their source of energy. At the factory, renewable electricity will be used to split water to produce hydrogen and oxygen.(相反,太阳能食品公司计划完全避免光合作用,并培养以氢作为能量来源的细菌。在工厂里,可再生电力将用于分解水以产生氢气和氧气。)”可知,第三段主要介绍了空气蛋白Solein生产的过程,故选A。
34.细节理解题。根据第五段“There are other benefits, too: factories could be situated anywhere in the world and production won’t be affected by weather conditions.(还有其他好处:工厂可以设在世界任何地方,生产不会受到天气条件的影响。)”
根据最后一段“I think these trends are exciting and will help bend the carbon curve as well as lead to improved global food supply security.(我认为这些趋势是令人兴奋的,将有助于弯曲碳曲线,并导致改善全球粮食供应安全。)” 故选A。

D.Americans do eat a lot of hamburgers.
E.You can have ice cream before your meal.

36.上文“There are many customary differences between the West and the East, of which are some of China’s eating habits, which many Westerners would find quite hard to understand.(东西方之间有很多习惯上的差异,其中一些是中国的饮食习惯,许多西方人会觉得很难理解)”说明一些是中国的饮食习惯和西方不同,许多西方人会觉得很难理解。
37.上文“I’ve seen the disgust (恶心) in people’s faces here when I’ve dropped food on the table only to then pick it up and eat it.(当我把食物扔在桌子上,然后捡起来吃的时候,我看到了人们脸上的厌恶)”说明在中国吃掉到桌子上的食物是会被人厌恶的。
38.下文“Westerners don’t want their food near the floor. Dust, germs, etc. are far more likely to get into the rice.I’ve been in several restaurants and nearly everyone I’ve seen puts their rice cookers on the floor. (西方人不希望他们的食物靠近地板。灰尘、细菌等更有可能进入大米。我去过几家餐馆,我见过的几乎每个人都把电饭煲放在地板上)”说明本段主要介绍了西方人不想让食物靠近地板,而中国人是不在意的。所以A项“把电饭煲放在地板上。”适合作本段的标题。故选A。
39.上文“Every Western child’s dream would be to live in China for the purpose that he/she could eat the r dessert before they eat their main meal. I’m not sure about this Western tradition of eating dessert last. In China, it doesn’t matter. (每个西方孩子的梦想都是住在中国,这样他/她就可以在吃主菜之前吃甜点。我不确定西方最后吃甜点的传统。在中国,这并不重要)”说明在中国,人们可以在主菜之前吃甜点,而在西方最后吃甜点的传统不确定。空处承接上文,E项中的“have ice cream before your meal”和标题“Eating dessert before a meal”相呼应,说明在中国,你可以在饭前吃冰淇淋。
40.标题“Drinking hot water with your meal(吃饭时喝热水)”以及“Chinese will not have a drink (water, tea, etc. ) with a meal. But, when they do, it is usually hot water.(中国人吃饭时不会喝(水、茶等)。但是,当他们这样做时,通常是热水)”说明中国人喜欢喝热水。空处承接上文,解释为什么中国人喜欢喝热水。F项中的“hot water is better for digestion than cold water.”

故填Before。
in line with意为“与……一致”,为固定搭配。故填with。
故填which。
故填including。
故填to unblock。
故填has seen。
故填a。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
The shark had arched its body in attack mode.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I told the whale that I loved him and thanked him as he was to swim off.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
