B Undergoing surgery can be really scary, especially for children. But a team of highly intelligent researchers have developed something that will make the experience less frightening, and the driving force behind it — a robot car. According to a study conducted by Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona Children’s Hospital, six out of 10 young patients who undergo surgery experience stress before receiving anaesthesia (麻醉). While pharmacological strategies are used to ease this, the side-effects can cause the experience to be more stressful. Working with the hospital to explore alternative solutions, researchers from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya developed a robot car as an initiative to reduce feelings of fear and anxiety. This innovative product can detect the emotions of the children by their facial expressions, heart rate, and breathing patterns, while adapting to their needs by interacting with them, changing color, making music, and creating smells. It was tested in a pilot study of 86 children aged between three and nine from 2020 to 2023, and received positive feedback from both the children and their parents. “It gave the children the feeling of control, and having an active role in the process without realising it, in a way that was fun,” a paediatric (儿科的) nurse Carmen Jerez said. “The parents were able to walk with them, talking about their driving, and they could see that their child was experiencing less anxiety and fear.” Though it has been put on hold while it awaits funding to develop a new prototype (原型), it’s clear that this technology is capable of revolutionising the well-being support of children in healthcare settings. 4. Why would the researchers from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya create the robot car? A. To help the physicians with surgeries. B. To help develop the creativity of children. C. To relieve pre-operation anxiety of children. D. To reduce the side-effects caused by anaesthesia. 5. What does paragraph 4 focus on concerning the robot car? A. The operating principle. B. The supportive feedbacks. C. The test procedures. D. The potential drawbacks. 6. What does the author think of the future of the robot car? A. Promising. B. Hopeless. C. Competitive. D. Risky. 7. What’s the best title of the text? A. Scientists invented an innovative robot car B. Most children feel stressed before a surgery C. Robot car delivers joy to children in hospital D. Technology plays an important role in hospitals C The sellers say that blue-light-blocking glasses are designed to protect our eyes from the effects of short-wavelength light from our smartphones, computer screens and LED lights. Given how much time we spend on our devices, this sounds like a smart investment, right? After all, eye strain (紧张) is a real issue and can lead to poor sleep and even cataracts (白内障) and other eye diseases. The glasses can cost £350 all the way up to around £1,500. But do they work? Elizabeth Esparaz, an ophthalmologist (眼科医生) based in Cleveland, Ohio, says the science that manufacturers share as they promote these glasses can be confusing. Firstly, blue light is not just about tech devices, and it’s not always bad. “Of course, the sun gives off a much higher level of blue light than man-made devices, and that’s actually beneficial,” says Dr. Esparaz. It helps our mood, alertness and sleep-wake cycle. The problem is blue light at night: It suppresses the release of melatonin. “Melatonin helps regulate our body rhythms and makes us sleepy,” says Dr. Esparaz. So, in theory, wearing blue-light-blocking glasses should help people who watch movies in bed or read from a table at night avoid sleeplessness. A Seeing Blue 2021 review study from the University of Oklahoma that looked at 24 previous studies found that people affected by sleep disorders, jetlag and shift work fell asleep faster after using these glasses. As for eye strain, a 2021 Australian study showed that those wearing the glasses did not experience less eye strain than those using clear glasses. And a 2018 review study, also by Austra lianresearchers, found insufficient evidence that they prevent certain eye diseases. “These glasses aren’t going to be harmful,” says Dr. Esparaz. But, she adds, a lack of standardization in the industry means there’s no way to know if one pair is better than another. A more reliable solution: Turn on the blue-light-filtering function on your devices and limit screen time before bed. To help with eye strain, Dr. Esparaz also suggests taking breaks and using lubricating (润滑) eye drops. 8. What can be inferred from Elizabeth Esparaz’s words? A. Blue light is beneficial to the body someway. B. Blue light merely comes from digital devices. C. Blue light from the sun does more harm to human. D. Glasses sellers are confused about the glasses’ function. 9. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “suppresses” in paragraph 3? A. Increases. B. Blocks. C. Promotes. D. Causes. 10. How did the author clarify the effectiveness of wearing blue-light-blocking glasses? A. By referring to the results of studies. B. By comparing the changes of the wearers. C. By offering different examples. D. By quoting the wearers’ comments. 11. Which statement might the author agree with to relieve eye strain? A. To wear blue-light-blocking glasses. B. To do eye exercises regularly. C. To control the screen time to rest eyes. D. To rely on eye drops to keep eyes healthy. D It has long been known that dogs can learn commands like “sit,” “stay,” or “fetch” and can respond to these words with learned behaviors, often with the help of a treat or two, but uncovering their understanding of nouns has proven more difficult. To look into the mystery, Boros from Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary and her colleagues, inspired by studies investigating the comprehension of babies before they can speak, decided to mimic (模仿) these experiments with dogs. They invited 18 dog owners to bring their pets to the lab along with five objects the animals knew well. These included balls, slippers, Frisbees, rubber toys, leads and other items. At the lab, the owners were instructed to say words for objects their dogs already knew. Then, the owners held up either the matching object or a different one while small metal discs harmlessly attached to the dogs’ heads measured brain activity in a process known as electroencephalography (EEG). Using EEG, the researchers aimed to observe any variances in brain activity when the dog’s owner mentioned a specific object, such as a “ball”, but displayed a different item, like a stick, as opposed to when both the spoken word and the presented object matched. This was indeed the case, with the results being strongest when the object was very familiar to the dog. That’s similar to what researchers have seen in humans and is widely accepted as evidence that they understand the words. Writing in Current Biology, the scientists say the results “provide the first neural evidence for object word knowledge in a non-human animal”. But the true extent of the dogs’ comprehension is still unknown, even by the study’s authors, since the dogs were responding to their own toys and objects that the owners brought to the lab. The researchers are now curious to know if this ability to understand referential language is specific to dogs or might be present in other mammals as well. Either way, they want to learn more about how this ability emerged and whether it depends on dogs’ unique experience of living with people. 12. Which aspect of dogs did Boros’s research focus on? A. Their speed of learning actions. B. Their willingness to follow orders. C. Their responses to training treats. D. Their capacity of understanding nouns. 13. What is paragraph 3 of the text mainly about? A. The result of human-dog interactions. B. The process of Boros’s experiment. C. The logic of pattern matching. D. The theory of EEG analysis. 14. The brain recording results showed a different pattern in the brain when ______. A. pet owners showed more objects than usual B. dogs had a larger vocabulary of object words C. the experiment was conducted in a new environment D. the spoken word and the presented object mismatched 15. What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph? A. Conclusions from the experiment. B. Insights into dogs’ experiences. C. Expectations for future studies. D. Applications of the discovery. Explore theme parks like a pro: tips for an unforgettable day of fun Plan and budget. It was a winter day when I came to the library. The sunlight was bright but not warm. It was a typical southern winter day, windless but cold. The winter vacation was crucial for me, and studying in the library could efficiently improve my studies. I stood in front of the door with my backpack. On the board on the door read: “Community Library”. I pushed the door open. Behind the service desk sat an old man with gray hair and dark skin, wearing reading glasses. When he saw me, he pushed his glasses up. “Hello, I live nearby. My home is small and noisy. Can I study here?” I asked. The old man looked me over and nodded. I then moved to a table in the corner. After lunch every day, I would come to the library. Most of the time, it was just the old man and me, and the only sound was the hum (嗡嗡声) of the old air conditioner. When I felt too cold or tired of reading, I would get up and move around. Gradually, the old man would ask me if I needed hot water. Sometimes he brought me subject-related books. We had brief conversations sometimes. The old man grew up in the countryside and didn’t have much education. He worked in a factory when he was young, and after retiring, he came to the community library to work. Every day, I studied until sunset. When it was about time for the old man to get off work, I would pack up and get ready to leave. He would also stand up and tidy up. After I left, he would close the door, ending his day’s work. One afternoon, I went to the library to return some books. The old man was very happy that day and handed me a book, saying, “I found a book on the far right of the shelf in the corner. I’m sure you’ll like it” I nodded, took the book, and thanked him. A week later, I went to return the book, only to find an old lady locking the door. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “Then why did the library close around 4 pm during the last few weeks?” I asked. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力答案:1-5 ACBAC 6-10 CAACB 11-15 BCABC 16-20 ABAAC 2024—2025学年度上学期高二年级二调考试 英语试卷 全卷满分150分。 How much is the shirt? While AI can be helpful, it’s important to remember that it cannot replace critical thinking and problem-solving skills. I suggest that we use AI as a tool, but let’s make sure we understand and analyze the information ourselves. We should also encourage each other to discuss and brainstorm solutions in study groups, which not only enhances our understanding but also improves our communication and teamwork skills. Let’s take control of our learning process and not become overly dependent on AI. A week later, I went to return the book, only to find an old lady locking the door. I checked my watch and saw it wasn’t closing time yet, so I asked her. She didn’t speak but pointed to a notice on the foam board on the wall. The board showed the library’s closing time: 2 pm. I was puzzled and asked when the closing time had changed. She said that it had never changed and that the closing time had always been 2 pm. I was shocked at the fact. “Then why did the library close around 4 pm during the last few weeks?” I asked. She smiled and said, “So you are that child.” She told me the library indeed closed late the past few weeks because the old man said there was a child who needed to study... At that moment, I was stunned, and my nose felt a bit sour. I looked up to hold back my tears, and a ray of sunlight shone on my face. The sunlight was warm. It was a typical southern winter day, windless and chilly, but the sunlight was spreading across the earth.
