Being deaf in a hearing world can lead to painful feelings of isolation. Waitress Kelsey recently shared an experience on a social media sharing site that quickly zoomed to the top of the “front page of the Internet”. In her brief post, Kelsey explained that she waits tables at a bar during the evenings, and one night she noticed a deaf man sitting alone in her section.
When Kelsey isn’t working at the bar during the daytime she makes a good hourly pay doing sign language interpretation, so she sensed an opportunity to use her skill to make this customer feel a little less alone in the world. She approached his table and began chatting with him in sign language.
Noticing Kelsey signing, the customers at the nearby table asked how long she'd been using sign language. They had a brief conversation about her goal of becoming certified to interpret sign language in a medical or mental health setting. She didn’t think much about the whole exchange until the customers had left the restaurant and she was tidying up the tables. There, on the table of the customers who’d seen her American Sign Language conversation with the deaf man, was a handwritten note on the receipt.
“Thank you for what you do, it absolutely matters!” the note said. “Good luck with finishing your degree!” Not only that, but they’d left her a $100 tip.
Kelsey was moved by the kind note, especially because she wasn’t doing anything out of the ordinary. To her, she was just communicating with someone in a language that only they understood. Yet to the deaf man and the people seated next to him, she’d bridged a gap and helped someone who probably feels lonely a lot of the time.
Kelsey shared the note on the Internet to spread more love and light in the world.
4. What do we know about Kelsey’s work at the bar?
A. It is her part-time job.
B. It goes beyond her ability.
C. It requires her to work all day long.
D. It offers her a chance to learn sign language.
5. What can we infer about the deaf man?
A. He left Kelsey $100 as a tip.
B. He could use sign language.
C. He found it hard to communicate with Kelsey.
D. He was a friend of the customers at the next table.
6. What did the people at the table next to the deaf man think of Kelsey?
A. She should use the Internet as a tool.
B. She needs to study further for a degree.
C. She is so kind to serve those in need.
D. She is wasting time working as a waitress.
7. What lesson can we learn from Kelsey’s experience?
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. It is never too late to learn.
C. A small act of kindness can make a big difference.
D. When in Rome, do as Romans do.

Adults are often ashamed to ask for help. Seeking someone’s help can make you feel like you are broadcasting your inability. New research suggests young children don’t seek help in school for the same reason.
Kayla Good, a graduate student at Stanford University, and Alex Shaw, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Chicago, applied a classic technique to learn more about how children think about reputation: Across several studies, they asked 576 children aged four to nine, to predict the behavior of two characters, Tom and Jack, in a story. Tom genuinely wanted to be smart, and Jack only wanted to seem smart to others. In one study, they told children both characters did poorly on a test, and asked which of them would be more likely to raise their hands in front of their class to ask the teacher for help.
The four-year-olds were equally likely to choose either of the two characters as the one who would seek help. But by age seven or eight, children thought Jack would be less likely to ask for help. And children's expectations were truly “reputational” in nature — they were specially thinking about how the characters would act in front of peers. They could still imagine situations where Jack would seek help: when it could be sought privately (on a computer rather than in person), children thought both characters were equally likely to ask for it.
Given the findings, it seems quite possible that when children themselves are the ones struggling, they, too, might avoid seeking out help if they are concerned about reputation. If so, the unwillingness to seek help when others are present could clearly impede learning progress. To improve in any field, one must work hard, take on challenging tasks, and ask questions. However, the situation can be difficult when someone is concerned about their impressions on others.
8. What were the children asked to predict about the two characters?
A. Their bad behaviors. B. Their learning progress.
C. Their likeliness to get help. D. Their potential for seeking help.
9. Who was likely to seek private aid according to the eight-year-olds?
A. Tom. B. Jack. C. Both. D. Neither.
10. What does the underlined word “impede” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Prevent. B. Ensure. C. Quicken. D. Monitor.
11. What is the author’s suggestion for kids?
A. Be ready to help others.
B. Be brave to ask for help.
C. Care more about reputation.
D. Make efforts to be smarter.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. A 11. B

Today’s world is not an easy adjustment for young adults. A key skill set for success is persistence, a characteristic that researchers say is heavily influenced by fathers. Researchers from Brigham Young University discovered that fathers are in a unique position to help their adolescent children learn persistence.
BYU professors Laura Padilla-Walker and Randal Duy arrived at these findings after following 325 American families over several years. And over time, the persistence gained through fathers led to higher achievement in school.
“There are relatively few studies that stress the unique role of fathers.” Padilla-Walker said. “This research also helps to prove that characteristics such as persistence which can be taught are key to a child’s life success.”
Researchers determined that dads need to practice an “authoritative” parenting style. Authoritative parenting is not authoritarian; strict, demanding or controlling. Rather, an authoritative parenting style includes some of the following characteristics: children feel warmth and love from their father; responsibility and the reasons behind rules are stressed; children are given a proper level of autonomy.
In the study, about 52 percent of the dads showed above-average levels of authoritative parenting. A key finding is that over time, children raised by an authoritative father were more likely to develop persistence, which leads to better results in school.
This particular study examined 11-to 14-year-olds living in two-parent homes. Yet the researchers suggest that single parents still may play a role in teaching the benefits of persistence, which is an avenue of future research.
12. What is special about the BYU professors' study?
A. It focused on father’s role in parenting.
B. It was based on a number of large families.
C. It aimed to improve kids’ achievement in school.
D. It analyzed different kinds of parenting styles.
13. What would an authoritative father do when raising his children?
A. Ignore their demands.
B. Make decisions for them.
C. Control their behaviors.
D. Explain the rules to them.
14. Which group can be a focus of future studies according to the researchers?
A. Single parents.
B. Authoritarian fathers.
C. Children aged from 11 to 14.
D. Mothers in two-parent homes.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Three Characteristics of Authoritative Fathers
B. Key Skills for Young Adults to Succeed in Future
C. Children Tend to Learn Determination from Fathers
D. Family Relationship Influences School Performance
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. A 15. C

FOMO stands for “fear of missing out”. It refers to the nervous or anxious feeling a person gets when they realize they are not attending a social event either because they weren't invited or they just didn't feel like going. ___16___ This belief, in turn, can create nervousness and a sense of inferiority. FOMO bothers most teens, especially if they're often online.
One way for teens to deal with FOMO is to practice what is known as reframing thinking. It's a mental exercise aimed at helping them look at situations differently. ___17___
Pay attention to negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones. One thing teens can do to deal with FOMO is to put down their negative thoughts and feelings in a diary. ___18___ Then, they remind themselves to try to see things from a different angle and in an active way.
___19___Encourage teens to understand that they have limited time and cannot possibly be everywhere and do everything. Therefore, it is natural that there will be social events that they cannot attend. But this does not mean that they're necessarily missing out on something.
Turn off the technology and do something else. Turning off the technology seems like a natural solution to FOMO. But just switching the phone off does not erase the feelings that FOMO causes. ___20___ The key is to do something else entirely like reading a book or baking cookies — anything that allows them to focus on something other than social media.
A. Be realistic about availability.
B. There are some negative results of FOMO.
C. Realize that no one lives a perfect life as described in social media.
D. Here are some tips on how teens can start to reshape their thought.
E. In general, FOMO causes people to think that they are not socially important.
F. Teens may still worry about missing out even if they're not in social media at all.
G. This allows them to see how often they're feeling terrible about themselves.

D
13 What would an authoritative father do when raising his children?
A. Ignore their demands.
B. Make decisions for them.
C. Control their behaviors.
D. Explain the rules to them.
14. Which group can be a focus of future studies according to the researchers?
A. Single parents.
B. Authoritarian fathers.
C. Children aged from 11 to 14.
D Mothers in two-parent homes.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Three Characteristics of Authoritative Fathers
B. Key Skills for Young Adults to Succeed in Future
C. Children Tend to Learn Determination from Fathers

E. In general, FOMO causes people to think that they are not socially important.
F. Teens may still worry about missing out even if they're not in social media at all.
