In Britain, Australia, Canada and a few other English-speaking countries, people
don’t stop celebrating when Christmas Day is over. They also celebrate the following
day, known as Boxing Day. It is a popular day for giving additional (额外的) gifts. It
has been celebrated for so long, but nobody exactly knows how it started.
Some people believe Boxing Day began in the Middle Ages. In those days, in
some special places there were special collection boxes where people threw money
for the poor. The days after Christmas the boxes were opened and the money was
counted. Then the money was used for helping the poor in the area.
Others believe Boxing Day started about 300 years ago when some rich people
had Christmas feasts. They offered lots of food to their guests. Because many servants
(仆人) were needed to make and serve the food, they could not celebrate Christmas
with their families. To thank them, the rich people would put food into boxes for their
servants to take home.
Now Boxing Day has become a public holiday in some countries. Some people
spend the day boxing up old or unwanted things and donating (捐赠) them to the poor.
Many people are active in helping service organizations (组织) like the Red Cross.
No matter how Boxing Day got its start, it’s a wonderful time to donate things or
give small gifts to people. By doing so, you can make someone’s holiday much
happier.

DNA is the whole “map” of the human body. It’s something that all humans have,
and it tells the body what to do. DNA is the reason why we look like our parents. We
get some of their DNA to make our own.
People have been trying to understand the human body for a long time. In 1860,
Mr Mendel discovered why we look similar to other people in our family. It’s because
of small things called “genes(基因)” in our body. In 1953, two scientists, Watson and
Crick, found out that those small parts are real messages. They are written in the DNA
with a special language.
In 1961, another two scientists found the first “word” that they could understand
in that language. It shows how DNA tells the cell (细胞 ) to build its parts. So far,
scientists have found all the “word” in the DNA map, but we don’t understand what
they all do. By understanding what just one “words” means, we can help to save
people from several illnesses. So the more we understand, the more doctors will be
able to do.
Most people hope that this will help to make better medicine to help sick people.
Other people worry that when we learn more “words” and find out more information,
we’ll use it in the wrong way, just to make people more attractive, or stop sick people
getting jobs.

D. The small parts are written in the DNAwith a special language.
53. How can we help sick people if we understand more “words” in the DNAmap?
A.Stop them getting jobs. B.Make better medicine.
C.Tell them what to do. D.Make them attractive.
54. According to the passage, Which of the following is NOT TRUE?
A. DNA tells the cell to build its parts.
B. DNA is the whole “map” of the human body.
C. we have understand what all the “words” in the DNAmap do.
D. we look like our parents because of “genes” in our body.

Dalin and her 12-year-old brother Xiaolin came up with the idea.
They worked hard to sell their vegetables. Every morning they had to wake up at
3 o’clock. Some of them went to the farmers’ market to buy vegetables. Some of them
went to the local market to take up a temporary stall(临时摊位). To lower the cost,
they learned to bargain(讲价) with the sellers.
At about 6:30 am, they began to sell vegetables. They peddled (吆喝) loudly to
attract customers. After several days, they got some experience, too.
For example, it was better to put vegetables in order and bigger ones on top. If
the vegetables were too heavy, they would give customers an extra plastic bag.
