City farms are gaining popularity in cities and towns around the United States.
Eco City Farm in Edmonston, Maryland, is located near shopping centers, car repair shops and homes. The neighborhood is a working-class community. People do not have very much money, and they have limited access to fresh food in markets. Over the past two years, the farm has attracted volunteers from the community like Marcy Clark. She schools her four children at home. On a recent day she brought them to Eco City Farm for a lesson. Alston Clark thinks his experience very valuable. “I like coming out here.” he says, “You know, you connect with the Earth, where your food comes from. You appreciate the food a little bit more.”
Margaret Morgan Hubbard started Eco City Farm. She thinks of it as a place where people can learn to live healthier lives. “Growing food in a community and showing that you can have farms even in the city is helpful to strengthen the relationship in that community and brings people together,” she says. “Every piece of what we do here is a demonstration to show people everything about how to have a sustainable community.” From the Eco City Farm people come to know that they are not only growing food and raising chickens and bees, but improving the soil with compost made from food waste. Sixteen wooden bins are filled with worms. Their job is to eat the food waste and help make it into compost.
Eco City Farm is an experimental operation. The farm gets its power not from the local electricity networks but from the sun with solar panels. In winter, the greenhouses are heated using a geothermal system. Vegetables can be grown all year. So once a week, all winter long, neighbors like Chris Moss and her three children bicycle to the farm to pick up a share of the harvest.

Scientists believed that if they could hit an asteroid(小行星)with an object travelling very fast, they could push the asteroid off the path it was on. So NASA came up with an experiment called the Double Asteroid Redirection Test, or DART.
Engineers built a box-shaped spacecraft that was about the size of a small car and weighed 570 kilograms and equipped it with a special camera and computers that would allow it to find and follow the asteroid they had chosen for the experiment.
Asteroids are rocky objects that move around the Sun. The smallest are the size of a large stone while some are up to 1, 000 kilometers in diameter (直径). The asteroid that was the target for this test is called Dimorphos, about 160 meters in diameter, or the size of a football stadium. It orbits (环绕) another larger asteroid, called Didymos. They are more than 7 million kilometers away from Earth and go around the Sun together, once every two years.
The DART spacecraft was sent up in November 2021 and then orbited the Sun for 10 months, following the path of Didymos and Dimorphos. Most of that time, Dimorphos was hidden by the sunlight reflecting off of the larger asteroid. On September 26, 2022, the spacecraft’s camera noticed Dimorphos for the first time and its navigation(导航)system began to guide it through space towards its target. About an hour later, it crashed into Dimorphos at more than 22, 500kilometers per hour.
Scientists studied the data and images of the asteroids for the next two weeks and found that the orbit of Dimorphos has shortened from 11 hours and 55 minutes to 11 hours and 23 minutes:a 32-minute change. While this may seem like a very small change, it shows that—if a dangerous asteroid was heading toward us—it would be possible to knock it off its course, keeping Earth safe. The chances of Earth actually being hit by an asteroid large enough to cause damage are very small.
28. What is the purpose of the DART?
A. To test whether scientists’ idea is true or not.
B. To know the weight of the asteroids going around the Sun.
C. To learn about the number of asteroids getting close to Earth.
D. To understand how asteroids move through space.
29. What can we learn about the target for the DART?
A. It is as large as a stadium. B. It is 1, 000 kilometers wide.
C. It is a box-shaped asteroid. D. It is an asteroid called Didymos.
30. What did the DART spacecraft do first after being sent up?
A. It hid the reflected sunlight. B. It followed the path of the target asteroid.
C. It landed safely on the target asteroid. D. It flew through space to the target asteroid.
31. What does the author think of the result of the DART?
A. Doubtful. B. Unsatisfying. C. Unexpected. D. Useful.
D
Two years ago, New Jersey became the first state in the U. S. to use learning standards requiring teachers to teach kids about climate change across grade levels and subjects. The standards, which went into effect this fall, introduce students as young as kindergartners to the subject, not just in science class but in the arts, world languages, social studies and physical education.
Climate change has not been completely taught in U.S. schools, largely because of the partisanship (党派分歧) about climate change and many teachers’ limited knowledge about the science behind it. That started to change in 2013, with the publishing of new national science standards, which asked science teachers to introduce students to climate change and its human causes starting in middle school. Still, only 20 states have used the standards. A 2020 report from the National Center for Science Education found that many states that didn’t follow the new guidance weren’t explicit in their standards about the human causes of climate change, and a few even taught wrong ideas about its causes and degree of seriousness. Meanwhile, discussion of climate change outside of science class remains rare (稀少的), educators and experts say.
New Jersey is trying to change that, but it’s not a simple task. Like teachers around the country, educators here are tired after years of COVID-19 disturbance, and, as elsewhere, some schools face serious teacher shortages. On top of this, many educators don’t feel prepared to teach climate change: A 2021 survey of 164 New Jersey teachers found that many had not enough confidence in their knowledge of the subject, and some held wrong ideas about it, confusing the problem with other environmental issues such as plastic pollution.
A more pressing concern is that the lessons are being given unequally across the state. Schools in rich towns tend to have more time and resources to introduce new standards; schools in poorer places that are often the most vulnerable (脆弱的) to climate disasters may lack the resources to do so.
32. Which is a reason for the incomplete teaching of climate change in U. S. schools before 2013?
A. The shortage of science teachers. B. The reduction of the science classes.
C. The different opinions on climate change. D. The poor teaching equipment.
33. What does the underlined word “explicit” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Clear. B. Active. C. Interested. D. Confident.
34. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The state of education in New Jersey.
B. Difficulties in teaching climate change.
C. Working conditions of New Jersey teachers.
D. Effects of COVID-19 on New Jersey education.
35. Which is the best title for the text?
A. New National Science Standards 2020
B. Discussion of Climate Change at School
C. Teaching Climate Change in Different Subjects
D. A Report of the National Center for Science Education

Every Saturday, Grandpa and I walk to the nursing home a few blocks away from our house to visit many of the old and sick people. “Whoever visits the sick gives them life,” Grandpa always says.
We have made some friends there. Mrs. Sokol, “The Cook”, likes to talk about the time when she was a well-known cook in Russia. Mr. Meyer, “The Joke Man” , enjoys telling us jokes. He laughs at his own jokes, shaking up and down and turning red in the face. Mrs. Kagan, “The Grandmother,” always shows us pictures of her grandchildren. Mrs. Schrieber is called “The Memory Lady” , whose room is filled with memories, memories that come alive as she tells us stories of her own experiences during the old days.
One day Grandpa got very sick and had to go to hospital. The doctors said they didn’t think he would ever get better.
Saturday came again, and it was time to visit the nursing home. How could I go visiting without Grandpa? Then I remembered what Grandpa once told me, “ Nothing should stand in the way of doing a good deed. ” So I went alone. Everyone was surprised when they didn’t see Grandpa. After I told them that he was sick and in hospital, they comforted me.
Days later, Grandpa was still in hospital. He was not eating. He could not sit up and could barely speak. I went to the corner of the room so Grandpa wouldn’t see me cry. Suddenly the nurse came into the room and said, “ You have some visitors. ”
“ Is this the place with the party? ” I heard a familiar voice ask. I looked up. They were the friends in the nursing room. The Cook brought him a hot bowl of homemade chicken soup. “ Chicken soup? What this man needs is a pastrami (熏牛肉) sandwich, ” said The Joke Man as he let out one of his deep, rich laughs.

C. Unexpected. D. Useful.

根据文章第一段“Scientists believed that if they could hit an asteroid(小行星)with an object travelling very fast, they could push the asteroid off the path it was on. So NASA came up with an experiment called the Double Asteroid Redirection Test, or DART.(科学家们相信,如果他们能用一个速度非常快的物体撞击一颗小行星,他们就可以把小行星推离它原来的轨道。因此,美国宇航局提出了一项名为‘双小行星重定向测试’(DART)的实验)”可知,DART实验的目的是检验科学家们的想法是否可行。故选A项。
29.
根据第三段的第三句“The asteroid that was the target for this test is called Dimorphos, about 160 meters in diameter, or the size of a football stadium.(这次测试的目标小行星被称为Dimorphos,直径约160米,或足球场大小)”可知,这次测试的目标小行星和足球场一样大。故选A项。
30.
根据第四段的第一句“The DART spacecraft was sent up in November 2021 and then orbited the Sun for 10 months, following the path of Didymos and Dimorphos.(DART宇宙飞船于2021年11月发射升空,然后沿着Didymos和Dimorphos的路径绕太阳运行了10个月)”可知,在发射以后,DART宇宙飞船首先是沿着目标小行星的路径飞行。故选B项。
31.
根据文章最后一段“Scientists studied the data and images of the asteroids for the next two weeks and found that the orbit of Dimorphos has shortened from 11 hours and 55 minutes to 11 hours and 23 minutes: a 32-minute change. While this may seem like a very small change, it shows that—if a dangerous asteroid was heading toward us—it would be possible to knock it off its course, keeping Earth safe. The chances of Earth actually being hit by an asteroid large enough to cause damage are very small.(科学家们在接下来的两周里研究了小行星的数据和图像,发现Dimorphos的轨道已经从11小时55分钟缩短到11小时23分钟:变化了32分钟。虽然这看起来是一个非常小的变化,但它表明,如果一颗危险的小行星正朝我们靠近,它就有可能偏离轨道,从而确保地球的安全。地球被一颗大到足以造成破坏的小行星撞击的可能性非常小)”可推论出,作者认为DART实验结果是很有用的。故选D项。

根据第二段的前两句“Climate change has not been completely taught in U. S. schools, largely because of the partisanship (党派分歧) about climate change and many teachers’ limited knowledge about the science behind it. That started to change in 2013, with the publishing of new national science standards, which asked science teachers to introduce students to climate change and its human causes starting in middle school.(美国学校还没有完全教授气候变化,很大程度上是因为关于气候变化的党派分歧和许多教师对其背后的科学知识有限。
故选A项。
34.
根据第三段的主要内容“New Jersey is trying to change that, but it’s not a simple task. Like teachers around the country, educators here are tired after years of COVID-19 disturbance, and, as elsewhere, some schools face serious teacher shortages. On top of this, many educators don’t feel prepared to teach climate change: A 2021 survey of 164 New Jersey teachers found that many had not enough confidence in their knowledge of the subject, and some held wrong ideas about it, confusing the problem with other environmental issues such as plastic pollution.(新泽西州正试图改变这一点,但这不是一项简单的任务。

Today it is common to see people who walk about with colored wires hanging from their ears wherever they go. They move about in their personal bubbles, sometimes unaware of what’s happening around them.___36___. Outside life is shut out. So are you one of “them”?
For me, walking around in my own personal bubble is perfect. ___37___ . What’s even better, wearing earphones seems to give a signal to people which says, “I’m not available for chatting at the moment!”
Suppose you’re at work and about to make an incredible breakthrough, but a colleague suddenly turns up. His sudden appearance would break your concentration and cause mistakes. ___38___. Once again, those wires hanging from your ears would be sure to give that “Go away!” signal.
___39___. It’s probably part of the growing up stage when they just want to ignore their whole family. While their mothers give them lectures about why they should do their homework, they can just turn up the volume on their MP3 player, smile, and say “Yes, Mum.” Problem solved.
Pretty soon, not only will we have pretty colored wires hanging from our ears, but also our brains will be directly plugged into some new high-tech instruments. We’ll be in a virtual world, communicating with everyone else, or choosing not to, as we like. ___40___. And they are changing our social habits along the way.
In the end, there is a thin line between using technology as a tool for making life better and being a slave to it! It’s so strange — suddenly, I don’t feel like wearing my earphones anymore.
A. Our instruments are changing quickly.
B. I don’t have to deal with the noise from the environment.
C. In the home situation, teenagers love these wires.
D. I also have wires hanging from my ears.
E. After all, I am listening to my favourite music and would rather not be disturbed.
F. Listening to music through earphones is the perfect way to ignore such interruptions (中断).
G. They walk around in their own spaces, with their personal “digital noise reduction systems”.

根据时间状语“During the 1970s and 1980s,”,可知时态为一般过去时;主语“the term “extreme sports””和谓语动词use之间是被动关系,因此为被动语态。故填was used。
副词修饰介词短语“without putting your life in danger.”,作状语,因此将形容词necessary变成副词necessarily。故填necessarily。
故填to protect。
develope from “由......发展而来”。故填from。
故填which。
故填a 。
故填which。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Everyone laughed with him.
That evening, Grandpa called the nurse in and said he was hungry.
Everyone laughed with him. Then he told us some new jokes. By the time he was finished, everyone had to use tissues to dry their eyes from laughing so hard. The Grandmother showed Grandpa a get-well card made by two of her grandchildren. The Memory Lady told us how Grandpa once came to visit her in a snowstorm, just to bring her some roses for her birthday. Before we knew it, visiting hours were up. Everyone said a short prayer for Grandpa. Then they said good-bye and told him that they would see him again soon.
That evening, Grand pa called the nurse in and said he was hungry. Soon he began to sit up. Finally he was able to get out of bed. Each day, Grandpa felt better and better, and he grew stronger and stronger. Soon he was able to go home. The doctors were shocked. They said his quick recovery was a medical miracle. But I knew the truth: His friends’ visit had made him well. Grandpa is better now. Every Saturday, without fail, we walk together to visit our friends.

W: Robert, I’m glad you are here. Hmm... I have something to tell you. It’s not easy to say.
M: What happened?
W: Well, you’re not in our group—for the history project.
M: What do you mean? You know we’re always in one group.
W: I know. It’s just this time that we have to study in different groups. It’s not about you or your work or anything like that, but because you didn’t sign up for it in time. It was full on the first day. There are four in our group already.

W: The teacher said four people make a group.

M: Remember to warm down after exercising.
W: OK. Thank you very much.
M: You are welcome.

M: Here’s the store I was telling you about. I think you can solve your problems here.
W: I hope so. Buying a gift for my mother’s birthday gets harder and harder every year, because getting something for people who have almost everything isn’t easy.
M: As far as I know, flowers are the most popular and common gift for a mother.
W: Well, we can begin by looking around the store. They have all kinds of great things.
M: Look at this handbag. I think it’s a great choice.
W: Yes. It looks really beautiful, but it’s more than $145. It is too much for me.
M: What about some healthcare products? Would your mother like them?
W: I doubt it. She has plenty of them already.
M: Here’s an unusual gift-a beautiful Chinese tea set. And it’s not expensive at all. It’s only $45. Do you think your mother would like it?
W: This is a good choice. Thanks for helping me. I will take it.
Text 10
M: It’s a great honour to have this opportunity to share something about myself with you. The most unforgettable experience I’ve ever had? Well, that was three years ago when I was in college. I spent a term studying in London. Even though we speak the same language, English people and Americans are very different. They think that we Americans are, friendly and that we want to be successful and rich. And I think the British are quiet and gentle. I love the lifestyle there. Going out for afternoon tea was fun, and I always did that with my friends. And I really love the old buildings. We don’t have anything that old in the United States, so it is pretty amazing! By the way, I’ve also been to Australia once. The buildings there aren’t so attractive either. The British also have a different sense of humor. Their TV shows are really funny. I’d like to say my experience was a pleasant one. In fact, I’m saving up money so I can go back there again.
