Bert won a national prize called Young Heroes for his “green” project. This public-spirited young person was now a university student. His love for insects grew deeper and he was going to protect them for the future.
________. When he was around 4 or 5, he always loved to watch different insects, especially beautiful swallowtails (凤蝶). One interesting fact he learned about swallowtails was that their bright colors warned hungry animals that they tasted bad. And it was also fun to watch how they came into being. But the reason he really fell in love with them was that they were very accessible. For example, if you wanted to attract (吸引) swallowtails, you could plant some zinnias, a kind of bright flower.
Bert started a zinnia garden at his house, where he raised a large number of swallowtails over the years. With the world’s swallowtail population falling, Bert wanted people to realize that if insects like swallowtails disappeared, so would all the others above them on the food chain. To make the fact clear and easy to understand for other students, he also created a zinnia garden at his junior high school.
Part of the joy for Bert was watching the younger students get excited when running after swallowtails. “Whenever a swallowtail lands on them, the young students will soon fall in love with these cute insects. They develop a new appreciation (欣赏) for them.” he said.
Bert put his efforts into the environmental educational project and made it take flight.

(23-24九年级上·江西宜春·期中)As you read this passage, you probably have some paper, a pen and at least one pencil in front of you. Have you ever wondered how they were first made and where they come from?
The word “paper” comes from the name papyrus, a plant. The ancient Egyptians took the soft centre of this plant and added water to make a wet mixture which was then pressed together and hung up to dry. The resulting paper was strong yet flexible and was used as writing material in Greek and Roman times. However, it was the Chinese who invented what we now know as paper. The method, in use over 2,000 years ago, also involved pressing and drying we t material to form paper. Many materials were used. It was not until the 19th century that paper became easy to make and cheap to buy.
The earliest pens were hollow reeds (空心芦苇) that were put into ink to produce a form of writing. By the 6th century BCE, feathers had taken the place of the reeds and continued to be used until the appearance of the metal nib (笔尖). The ballpoint pen was developed in the second half of the 20th century by the Hungarian Biro brothers.
From the time of the Romans, a metal stick, made of lead (铅), was used to write on papyrus. The lead left only a light mark and was later replaced by another soft metal, called graphite (石墨). Unlike lead, graphite produced a much firmer and heavier line. The graphite sticks, however, broke very easily. So an Italian couple invented something a little like our modern pencil.

A.①→②→④→③ B.②→①→③→④ C.④→②→①→③. D.②→④→①→③
4.Why did pencil makers change the pencil sticks from lead to graphite?
A.Because lead is harmful to people. B.Because lead breaks more easily.
C.Because graphite makes darker lines. D.Because graphite can’t be found easily.
5.What does this passage mainly talk about?
A.The benefit of the pen. B.The inventor of the pencil.
C.The important inventions in China. D.The history of paper, pens and pencils.

(23-24九年级上·江苏南京·期中)As a mother of three young girls, Alison Cowan worried about her daughters growing up too fast. From asking for the latest toy to wanting to wear make-up, it seemed to Alison and her husband, Alan, that their children were never satisfied with what they had.
The girls would ask for a toy, but would lose interest in it as soon as their friends had something new. Birthday parties were no longer just a few party games and blowing up balloons. All the parents seemed to invite professional performers and compete over who could give the most expensive party bag. At just seven years old, Amy and her friends were paying more and more attention to their appearance. It was a feeling that many parents would have.
However, few would dream of leaving a comfortable family life and a comfortable house to move their family 3,000 miles away to Africa in search of a simpler life. But, last June, Alison and her husband, Alan, moved with their daughters to Kampala in Uganda, to show them a different lifestyle.
For almost a year, the girls play in the red, dusty streets with local children and visit markets to buy fresh fish and vegetables for dinner. They have been able to play and use their imagination away from the distractions (分心) of the consumer-driven society. Now, instead of competing over who has won a computer game, the girls think about things like the frequent water shortages and electricity cuts in certain areas. “At times, we’ve been without water for five days. (23-24九年级上·河南周口·期中)Are you masculine (有男子气概的) ? Here are some students’ ideas.
Liu Jiawei, 15
In my eyes, being masculine means having a sense of responsibility and good values.
For example, students should be responsible for their studies. They should do their best to accumulate (积累) knowledge and improve their grades. On the other hand, they are masculine regardless of their looks.
Qiu Wenjun, 11
I agree that there is a shortage of masculinity among today’s youth, especially boys. While boys seem like they’re not tough enough, on the other hand, some girls in my class are very rude and like to punch (打) boys. The boys usually have to run and hide in the bathroom
However, boys should have the right to protect themselves. They can be masculine by showing their courage and protecting the weak.
Xu Zineng, 12
I think teenagers today are short on masculinity. Masculine people, in my opinion, should be healthy and energetic. They are responsible and never run from their problems. They have their own code of conduct (行为准则) and never follow others blindly. They are eager to learn and hold a set of good values. They are strong in both body and mind.
Zhao Zhihan, 12
China’s youth are not short on masculinity. I think being masculine means being positive, generous (慷慨的) , strong, they can be considered to be masculine.
For example, I see masculinity in Chen Xiangrong, the 19-year-old soldier who fought and died in the conflict (冲突) between China and India last year. He performed his duty and acted bravely as a soldier.
For teenagers, masculinity is about fighting spirit. For example, if you fail an exam, you should learn from your mistakes and improve on the next one.

(23-24九年级上·河北石家庄·期中)I used to be an active girl. But two years ago, an English speaking competition held in my school changed me a lot.
I stood on the stage (舞台) for the first time. I was so nervous that my brain suddenly became empty. No longer after I began my speech, the hall turned noisy. It seemed that they were laughing at me. I knew I failed.
From then on, I became quiet and always stayed alone. I didn’t want to express my ideas in public, even in class. Every time I wanted to say something, I thought people would laugh at me. My friends couldn’t understand me, and they left me, one by one.
One day, my science teacher asked us why trees in forests were much taller than those in the wild. “Ha, what a silly question!” I thought.
“There’s not enough space in the woods for trees to expand (伸展) their branches (枝条). Of course they have to grow taller than others. The trees in the wild needn’t do that since there’s enough space.” I said in a low voice.
To my surprise, the teacher said, “Yes, you’re right. It is a competition.” My face turned red right away. I hadn’t spoken for a long time, especially in public.

(23-24九年级上·浙江杭州·期中)The hum of millions of locusts on the move is broken by the screams of farmers and the clanging (哇嘟声) of pots and pans. But their noise-making does little to stop the greedy insects from feasting on their crops.
Since the beginning of 2020, the East African country of Kenya has been fighting against the nation’s worst desert locust outbreak in over 70 years. The destructive (破坏性的) swarms, some as big as three times the size of New York City — about 192 billion insects — are eating their way through thousands of acres of crops and animal farms.
“These things are terrible,” says Keith Cressman, an official with the UN Food and American Organization (FAO).“A swarm the size of Manhattan can, in a single day, eat the same amount of food as everyone in New York and California combined.”
Experts say the locusts are easy to control with pesticides. However, due to a delay of action and a lack of resources to battle such large numbers, the locust invasion (入侵) is still out of control. If efforts are not made in time to control the bugs, they could have grown to be 20 times their current number by March. That is the start of the planting season in Kenya. Even worse, experts believe that if control efforts fail, yet another generation of locusts, which bave a lifespan of between three to five months, could appear just in time for the September harvest season.
“Although giant nets, flamethrowers, lasers and huge vacuums have been suggested in the past, these are not of use for locust control,”the FAO says.“People and birds often eat locusts. But that’s not enough to largely reduce the bug’s population levels.”
1.What are the farmers most probably doing with their pots and pans (in paragraph 1)?
A.They are driving the locusts away. B.They are cooking meals.
C.They are making music. D.They are holding a ceremony for a good harvest.
2.What does the example Keith Cressman used (in paragraph 3) show?
A.Locusts grow in number very quickly.
B.Manhattan is faced with a locust outbreak as well.
C.Large numbers of locusts are destructive to food resources.
D.People in New York and California have been eating too much food.
3.Which of the following statements are true?
①Locusts can’t be killed by pesticides.
②Locusts can live for three to five months.
③Kenya’s planting season starts in September.
④The later people start to control the locusts, the worse the situation will be.
A.①② B.①③ C.③④ D.②④
4.According to the article, why is the locust invasion still out of control?
①Because there have been too many locusts.
②Because the locust swarms move too quickly.
③Because Africans don’t know how to kill locusts.
④Because measures were not taken in time to deal with the locusts.
A.①② B.①④ C.②③ D.③④
5.What can we know about the FAO by looking at the end of the article?
A.It is encouraging more people to eat locusts.
B.It thinks locusts can be a main food source for people.
C.It has found an effective solution to the problem of the locust invasion.
D.It has been unable to work out a method to control the locusts up till now.

1.What does the underlined word “flexible” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.柔韧的 B.复杂的 C.舒适的 D.坚硬的
2.When did the paper become easily available?
A.In the 6th century. B.In the 12th century. C.In the 19th century. D.In the 20th century.
3.Which of the following is the correct order of pens’ development?
①feathers ②hollow reeds ③metal nib ④ballpoint pen
A.①→②→④→③ B.②→①→③→④ C.④→②→①→③. D.②→④→①→③
4.Why did pencil makers change the pencil sticks from lead to graphite?
A.Because lead is harmful to people. B.Because lead breaks more easily.
C.Because graphite makes darker lines. D.Because graphite can’t be found easily.
5.What does this passage mainly talk about?
A.The benefit of the pen. B.The inventor of the pencil.
C.The important inventions in China. D.The history of paper, pens and pencils.
【答案】1.A 2.C 3.B 4.C 5.D

Then the teacher explained how trees in forests had to grow taller to receive more sunlight. If not, they would die. This also happened in our society.
What’s more, the tree that doesn’t live in a crowd is just like a person who has no friends in life.
I raised my head slowly and found the teacher was looking at me. His eyes were as warm as sunshine. I realized that I must stand up and face the truth.

【答案】1.A 2.C 3.D 4.B 5.D
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章介绍了东非面临的严重的蝗虫灾害,而且至今还没有找到解决问题的好办法。
1.推理判断题。根据“But their noise-making does little to stop the greedy insects from feasting on their crops.”可知他们制造的噪音对阻止贪婪的蝗虫掠夺庄稼没有一点作用,所以推断他们用锅碗瓢盆制造噪音企图驱赶蝗虫离开,故选A。
2.推理判断题。根据“A swarm the size of Manhattan can, in a single day, eat the same amount of food as everyone in New York and California combined”可知Keith Cressman说一天之内,曼哈顿大小的蝗虫群能吃掉纽约和加利福尼亚所有人的食物总和,所以推断他想通过事例展示大量的蝗虫对食物资源有巨大的破坏性,故选C。
3.细节理解题。根据“another generation of locusts, which bave a lifespan of between three to five months,”可知蝗虫的寿命为3-5个月;根据“However, due to a delay of action and a lack of resources to battle such large numbers, the locust invasion is still out of control”和“If efforts are not made in time to control the bugs, they could have grown to be 20 times their current number by March”可知控制蝗虫的行动不能拖延,要及时,否则会失控,甚至危害更大,故选D。
4.细节理解题。根据“The destructive swarms, some as big as three times the size of New York City — about 192 billion insects — are eating their way through thousands of acres of crops and animal farms.”和“However, due to a delay of action and a lack of resources to battle such large numbers, the locust invasion is still out of control”可知蝗灾没有得到控制是因为蝗虫的数量巨大而且没有采取及时的措施,故选B。
5.推理判断题。根据“‘Although giant nets, flamethrowers, lasers and huge vacuums have been suggested in the past, these are not of use for locust control,’the FAO says.‘People and birds often eat locusts. But that’s not enough to largely reduce the bug’s population levels.’”可知粮农组织说巨型网,火焰喷射器,激光和大型真空吸尘器都没有用,人们和鸟吃蝗虫也不足以减少蝗虫的数量,所以推断粮农组织至今对控制蝗虫没有办法,故选D。
