She looked at me directly and made me to the whiteboard to perform a division (除法) problem. Division was my weakest subject. I repeatedly put the numbers in the 13 places, or forgot to add in the zeros. I worriedly 14 myself out of my seat. With every slow step I took, I grew more nervous. My stomach ached, and my whole body shook with 15 . The teacher read the problem aloud. Unsure of myself, I looked at the girl beside me, and tried to 16 what she was writing, but she went faster than I could understand, writing down what seemed to be foreign symbols. My eyes fixed on the chicken scratch I had tried. Impossible to understand. Why me? Why couldn’t I work out the problem that seemed easy to all other kids? These questions filled my head. As the other girl finished and danced back to her seat, I wrote some random(胡乱的) numbers on the board, and 17 back to mine. The teacher read over our work. “Now, class, Susie did this problem absolutely correctly.” “As for Tara,” the teacher said jokingly, “I don’t even know what she did.” The class burst into laughs, and I felt my face turn red as I tried to sink as low as possible into my seat, hoping to prevent them from 18 me at all. But this memory is one I remember, surprisingly, in a positive way. It made me 19 , and gave me persistence. When I get a poor grade in school, or am put down by somebody, I think of that moment and every single one of those 20 that I asked myself. The terrible ache in my stomach comes back and gives me the motivation to answer all of those whys and try hard until perfection, or as close as I can get. 13.A.proper B.incorrect C.special D.unimportant 14.A.lifted B.dropped C.repaired D.knocked 15.A.tiredness B.excitement C.shyness D.fear 16.A.accept B.explain C.copy D.describe 17.A.rushed B.looked C.talked D.thought 18.A.changing B.inviting C.seeing D.teaching 19.A.healthier B.stronger C.cleverer D.happier 20.A.ways B.words C.hows D.whys 三、 阅读理解(共26分, 每小题2分) (一)信息匹配。 Jane, a reporter, is collecting information for the local newspaper. She is interested in the following creations introduced in a magazine. 21 A schoolboy aged 11 has invented a schoolbag. It tells you which books to pack. A small computer and a scanner (扫描装置) are fixed in the bag. As each book is put into the bag, it is checked by the scanner. If any book is missing, a message will be shown on the computer screen to remind you. 22 A university makes that happen. It uses a 3D printer to create sweets based on the weather information of a certain day. The shapes of the sweets are affected by wind speed. The colors of the sweets are decided by temperature. The sweets act as a weather record of the day when they are made. 23 To help you get up, a company has created a “tool”—a sunrise bed. It wakes you up gently as a sunrise does. Lights built into the bed turn on and start to get brighter and brighter. When the lights are fully on, soft music will begin to play. It will be louder and louder until you turn it off. The company explains, “The gentle light tells your body that it is morning, so it stops producing a chemical that helps you sleep.” A.Can you eat weather? B.It’s hard for you to get up in the morning, isn’t it? C.Weather sweets bring serious problems, don’t you agree? D.Forget to pack the books you need into your schoolbag in the morning rush? (二)信息选择。阅读下面的三篇短文, 根据短文内容, 从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D 四个选项中, 选择最佳选项。 B Kevin loves to read mystery books because he likes to try to solve the mystery himself before he gets to the end. Solving puzzles is like solving mysteries, so he likes working on puzzles too. He also likes solving problems. Kevin can usually solve any mystery, puzzle or problem. One day Kevin’s mom was trying to find her glasses. Without her glasses, she could not drive. This was a problem because she was going to drive Kevin to his friend’s house. It was also a mystery and a puzzle. Kevin really wanted to solve this mystery, so he sat down with his mom. “Where do you last remember seeing your glasses?” he asked. “I had them on while I was watching the news this morning,” she said. “Where were you watching the news?” asked Kevin. His mom thought for a minute, and then she answered that she was in the sitting room. She remembered sitting in her favorite chair and taking off her glasses when the news ended. She thought she had placed her glasses on the table, but they weren’t there. “Are you sure you didn’t put them on again after the morning news?” asked Kevin. “Maybe I did,” his mom replied. “Let’s walk through your day, Mom,” said Kevin. Kevin had his mom describe everything she remembered doing during the day so far. She mentioned watching the news, making breakfast, folding laundry, working in her home office and then gardening. It was after gardening that she started looking for her glasses. After hearing about his mom’s day, Kevin retraced her path through the house and yard. He looked under the cushion (垫子) of her favorite chair, in the kitchen, in the laundry basket, in her office and around the garden. He didn’t find her glasses. Kevin didn’t want to give up, so he looked in each place again and he looked even harder. When he went around the kitchen again, he opened the cabinets(橱柜)instead of just looking on the counters. Kevin solved the mystery, the puzzle and the problem. He found his mom’s glasses in the drawer with the silverware. “Thank you, Kevin,” said his mom, “I wouldn’t be able to see anything without you.” 24.What was Kevin’s mom trying to find? A.Her glasses. B.Her books. C.Her chairs. D.Her keys. 25.Where did Kevin find them for her mom? A.On the table. B.In the yard. C.In the drawer. D.On the Internet. 26.How did Kevin help her mom find them? A.By reading mystery books. B.By following her day’s path. C.By looking for it in his house with his friends. D.By walking around his house with his mom. C Sometimes it seems that time is flying. Perhaps it doesn’t need to feel this way. Our experience of time can be possibly changed. By understanding the psychological (心理学的) processes behind our different experiences of time, we might be able to slow down time a little. One basic law of psychological time is that time seems to slow down when we’re exposed(接触) to new environments and experiences. The law is caused by the relationship between our experience of time and the amount of information our minds process. The more information our minds take in, the slower time seems to pass. It follows, then, that we have different experiences of time in different situations. In some situations, our life is full of new experiences. Our minds process a lot of information and time seems to slow down. In other situations, we have fewer new experiences and the world around us becomes more and more familiar(熟悉的). We become insensitive to our experience, which means we process less information, and time seems to speed up. How can we slow down time? Here are two suggestions. Firstly, since we know that familiarity makes time pass faster, we can expose ourselves to as many new experiences as possible. We can give ourselves new challenges, meet new people, and expose our minds to new information, hobbies and skills. This will increase the amount of information our minds process and expand (增加) our experience of time. Secondly, and perhaps most effectively, we can give our whole attention to an experience-to what we are seeing, feeling, tasting, smelling or hearing. This means living through our senses rather than through our thoughts. For example, on the way home, focus your attention outside of yourself, instead of thinking about the problems you have to deal with. Look at the sky, or at the buildings you pass, traveling among them. This open attitude to your experiences helps take in more information and also has a time-expanding effect. To a certain degree, we can understand and control our experience of time passing. It’s possible for us to slow down time by expanding our experience of time. 27.According to the writer, we can expand our experience of time by . A.going to bed on time B.traveling to new places C.having dinner as usual D.printing the same materials 28.What can we learn from the passage? A.Being familiar with the world around helps us get more information. B.Understanding psychological time makes life pass more quickly. C.We can take in more information by living through our senses. D.We should build a stronger relationship between time and us. 29.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A.Slow Down Time B.Only Time Will Tell C.Race Against Time D.Time Will Not Come Twice D Most environmental pollution comes from humans and their inventions. The electric bulbs are thought to be one of the greatest human inventions of all time. However, too much of a good thing has started to negatively impact the environment. Light pollution, the extreme or inappropriate use of outdoor artificial light, is affecting human health and wildlife behavior. There is a global movement to reduce light pollution, and everyone can help. Light pollution is a global issue. This became particularly obvious when the World Atlas (地图册) of Night Sky Brightness, a computer-generated map based on thousands of satellite photos, was published in 2016. Vast areas of North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia are glowing with light, while only Siberia, the Sahara, and the Amazon are in total darkness. Artificial light can wreak havoc on natural body rhythms in both humans and animals. It interrupts sleep and confuses the circadian rhythm (生理节奏) — the internal, twenty-four-hour clock that guides day and night activities and affects physiological processes in nearly all living organisms. One of these processes is the production of the hormone melatonin (褪黑素), which is released when it is dark and is prevented when there is light. An increased amount of light at night lowers melatonin production, which results in lack of sleep, headaches, stress, anxiety, and other health problems. Blue light, in particular, has been shown to reduce levels of melatonin in humans. It is found in cell phones and other computer devices, as well as in light-emitting diodes (LEDs), the kinds of bulbs that have become popular at home and in industrial and city lighting due to their low cost and energy efficiency. Studies show that light pollution is also impacting animal behaviors, such as migration (迁徙) patterns and habitat formation. Because of light pollution, sea turtles guided by moonlight during migration get confused, lose their way, and often die. Large numbers of insects, a primary food source for birds and other animals, are drawn to artificial light and are instantly killed upon contact with light sources. Even animals living under the deep sea may be affected by underwater artificial lighting. One study looked at how animals in sea responded to brightly lit panels put under water off the coast of Wales. Fewer filter feeding animals (滤食性动物), such as the sea squirt (海鞘), made their homes near the lighted panels. This could mean that the artificial light is altering ocean ecosystems. The good news is that light pollution, unlike many other forms of pollution, is reversible (可逆的) and each one of us can make a difference! Now, many people are taking action to reduce light pollution and bring back the natural night sky. Individuals are urged to use outdoor lighting only when and where it is needed, to make sure outdoor lights are properly shielded (遮挡) and direct light down instead of up into the sky, and to close window blinds, shades, and curtains at night to keep light inside. 30.What does the underlined phrase “wreak havoc on” in Para. 3 probably mean? A.Greatly improve. B.Well maintain. C.Strictly manage. D.Seriously damage. 31.According to the passage, which would the author agree with? A.Light pollution was first studied as a global issue in 2016. B.Deep-sea environment can help animals avoid light pollution. C.Artificial light affects the sense of direction and habits of animals. D.LEDs can be used more because of low cost and energy efficiency. 32.What is the author’s attitude towards the control of light pollution? A.Unconcerned. B.Negative. C.Neutral. D.Positive. 33.What is the main purpose of the passage? A.To call on people to reduce light pollution. B.To discuss fors and againsts of artificial light. C.To give suggestions to protect environment. D.To show development prospect of artificial light. 第二部分 本部分共5题, 共20分。根据题目要求, 完成相应任务。 四、 阅读表达(共10分, 第1-3题每小题2分, 第4小题4分) On Top of the World Jenny Tough is a runner, cyclist, and adventurer.
