Two of the kids laughing at Todd were Antwan Garret and Kristopher Graham, a pair of freshman football players. But over time, they realized that their words seemed to hunt Todd’s spirit.
“I feel like I needed to do something.” Graham says. So he and Garet made a plan. They went home and hunted through their own closets (橱柜). The next day at school, they met Todd at their third-period class and asked him to come into the hall. Todd was worried about being called out by the boys.
“He wasn’t smiling, and I was like, I think this is going to make you smile,” Graham says. “I told him, We’re in the same third period, and I apologize for laughing at you. I want to give something to you to make up for it.” He then handed Todd a bag. Inside were clean shirts and shorts, plus a brand-new pair of New Balance sports shoes.
Todd was blown away. “I was very happy,” he says. “Shocked, completely.” And Todd got much more than a new closet. Now, he no longer sits alone at lunch. He eats with his new friends, Garrett and Graham.

Many of us like to dine out and treat ourselves to delicious food. We are used to choosing hearty, fat-filled dishes and sugar-charged desserts, which are not easily cooked at home. The recent rise of light meals, however, gives diners smarter choice. According to Economic Daily, low-calorie, low-fat and high-fiber meals have become popular in China's restaurants and online delivery platforms.
The country saw a rapid expansion of restaurants specializing in light meals, from just 600 in 2017 to more than 3,500 in 2018. According to a report released by Meituan, a major online food delivery platform, the number of light meals ordered online also rose 75 percent from the previous year.
Having a light meal, however, doesn't mean eating only vegetables. Different from the meat-free lifestyle, a typical light dish avoids oily, salty and spicy food. Instead, it contains things like boiled meat, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Healthy nutrients(营养物)are the theme of the light meal.
These dishes are useful for keeping healthy and controlling your weight. That's probably why so many young people are into them. Diners see it as a great way to avoid becoming fat. "After eating several light meals, I felt my appetite(胃口)has shrunk. I now prefer light flavors," said Zou Jing, a college teacher in Wuhan. She shared a picture of her lunch: a mixture of beef, eggs, corn, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes.
These changes in eating behavior are connected to deeper changes in how people think about food, says Water Willet, chairman of the nutrition department at the Harvard T. Chan School of Public Health. "Diet quality, not quantity is important for both weight control and long term well-being," he said. So the next time you have a party with friends, try a light meal. It will satisfy not only your stomachs but maybe also your hearts.
8. How does the author prove the popularity of light meals?
A. By giving examples. B. By giving descriptions.
C. By listing numbers. D. By showing other people's opinions.
9. What is the subject of the light meal?
A. Taking in healthy nutrients. B. Eating only vegetables.
C. Having a meat-free lifestyle. D. Avoiding salty and spicy food.
10. Why do many young people enjoy light meals?
A. They are usually colorful. B. They can help people control their weight.
C. They are cheaper than other meals. D. They are simple and convenient.
11. What do we know about people's eating from the text?
A. One's eating habit shows his personality.
B. Light meals will stay popular for a short time.
C. It's important to eat the right amount of good food.
D. There are changes in attitude toward healthy eating.
D
Studies have suggested early rising and success might be linked. People who wake up early are more in keeping with the traditional corporate schedule and tend to have more positive personalities, which might lead to better grades in school or higher wages on the job.
Is getting up early for everyone? No. There's been lots of research about how some people are biologically more likely to feel more alert (机敏的)in the morning, while others are at their best at night. You might be more alert and have better cognitive (认知的)ability in the afternoon, for instance. So, if you don't naturally feel alert in the morning but decide to wake up early anyway, you might be disturbing your actual top performance times. Of course, people may have personal reasons for making an early start. Parents with young children or workers with non-traditional hours may also have no choice about what time they start the day.
Getting up early doesn't necessarily translate to instant success at the office. In fact, depending on the person, it could end up having a negative effect. Especially if you don't normally wake up super early and are trying to follow some kind of productivity fashion. An even worse condition may arise if you're actually reducing sleep to become an early riser. Sacrificing sleep means you may be hit by the many negative effects of sleep lack. Getting a full night's sleep and getting the same amount of sleep at the same time each night are both important. So if early rising means cutting sleep, don't do it.
What should you do? Don't listen to thought-leaders or Linkedln influencers but figure out what works best for you. Pay attention to when you feel most tired and most awake. Make a note of the times you fall asleep and wake up naturally. Try to adjust your schedule to those times, as that's how you'll tap into most of your natural energy for the day ahead. And above all, it's getting adequate amounts of sleep.
12. What is paragraph 1 intended to tell us?
A. The early bird catches the worm.
B. A good beginning makes a good ending.
C. A thousand mile trip begins with one step.
D. Constant dropping wears the stone.
13. Why is getting up early unfit for everyone?
A. People have different cognitive ability.
B. It disturbs working orders.
C. Not all are in their best state in the morning.
D. Few people have their top performance times.
14. What does the author think of getting up early?
A. It can lead everyone to success.
B. It has too many negative effects.
C. It means shortening the sleep time.
D. It is less important than sleeping enough and well.
15. What do experts advise to do with the working time?
A. Follow the advisers’ directions.
B. Find out your own best time table.
C. Sleep more and better than before.
D. Use your energy averagely in a day.

Michael Todd wore the same clothes every day for the first three weeks of school. He became the target of laughter, but there was little Todd could do. His mother simply couldn’t afford to buy him new clothes.
Reflecting on the day Garrett and Graham called him into the hall, Todd called it the best day of his entire life.

Many of us like to dine out and treat ourselves to delicious food. We are used to choosing hearty fat-filled dishes and sugar-charged desserts, which are not easily cooked at home.

Melissa was a single parent of three small children, working at a low-paid job. Money was always tight and she had to work hard to make ends meet. But they still felt blessed with a roof over their heads, food on the plate, clothes on their backs, and even if not a lot, always enough. Not knowing they were poor, the kids just thought their mother was strict in money management. Melissa was really glad about that.
Christmas was just around the corner. Although there wasn't budget for a lot of gifts, Melissa planned to please the kids with a family party. She prepared weeks ahead of time, asking one by one what the kids wanted for Christmas. Fortunately, Melissa managed to spare $ 80 dollars for the whole family to enjoy the fun of Christmas shopping.
The big day arrived. Mellissa drove the kids to a nearby Walmart and gave each kid a twenty-dollar bill. “Now, my children,” she announced, “you have two hours to pick a gift in the supermarket. Then we will meet back at the gate.” Excited, the children scattered (四散) and rushed into the supermarket.
Melissa smiled. She looked at her own note and put it back into her pocket. Well, the Melissa smiled. She looked at her own note and put it back into her pocket. Well, the children's shining faces were the most precious Christmas gift for her, weren't they? Sitting in the car, she waiting patiently, imagining what gifts the kids would choose. She couldn't wait to share their joy.
Two hours later, the kids came back one by one. Tom and Tick rushed to their mother, eyes twinkling with excitement. They showed their gifts to Melissa and jumped with joy. The third child, Ginger, was obviously left behind, who dragged her feet to the car. To everyone's surprise, Ginger was empty-handed. Melissa said nothing, asked the kids to get into the car and headed home:

【答案】参考范文:
Driving home, everyone was talking about their gifts in high spirits except the youngest daughter, Ginger. Feeling puzzled, Melissa asked what she had bought for Christmas. “Nothing.” Ginger whispered, lowering her head. Other kids stopped talking and turned to Ginger. “Are you kidding? Did you lose your money?” They stared at the little girl, their faces lighting up with surprise. Ginger shook her head and said that she gave the bill to a man who was begging outside the supermarket. The man in rags was standing in cold weather. There was no doubt that he was homeless and had a hard time.
“We have so much, but the homeless man doesn't have anything,” Ginger explained. “I am willing to share my happiness with him. I hope he can buy warm clothes or treat himself to a good dinner.” She added, with eyes shining with excitement. Hearing her daughters' words, Melissa felt a sense of pride swept through her. “What you did is right, Ginger. You are such a kind child that we are proud of you,” she said. Arriving home, they had a small party and the other kids offered to share their gifts with Ginger. It was the special experience that made the kids realize sharing is important.
