It was sunny on Oct. 30 last year. Zhang Siwen, 13, saw some magnolia fruit (木兰果) at school. She picked one, but not for fun. Instead, she took notes on the fruit. She carefully drew different parts of the fruit and wrote down some information. Several months later, her nature-related (与自然相关的) notes won second prize at a science competition.
Many students in Shanghai collect fruit, flowers and other plants and write notes with pictures and descriptions. They learn more about nature by writing these notes. They also include other information in their notes, such as when and where they got the plant, what the weather was like and how they felt at the time.
For many students, taking these nature notes is a journey of discovery. Zhang is one of them. When she wrote her magnolia notes, she first drew a picture of the fruit and learned about its length (长度) with a ruler. Then, she broke the fruit open. She touched, squeezed (挤压) and smelled it to learn more. “This small fruit was covered by a hard shell (壳) with white spots (斑点). If you squeeze the fruit, you’ll find it is juicy,” she said.

I’ve always had a love for travelling abroad. Last year, I took a trip to London alone. Those nights, I stayed in a youth hostel (青年旅社). For me, hostels are places where I can meet and talk to different people. It’s great fun for me. During the stay in the hostel, I met two girls, one from India and the other from Germany. We three had very happy talks together. We shared our personal travel stories and the interesting people we met with each other. The girl from India was a lawyer (律师) who helped people solve their family problems. She was taking a trip to Europe all by herself. The girl from Germany had great interest in photography (摄影). As I was also a photography fan, we ended up talking all night and sharing experience in using a camera.
The best part is that they both became close friends of mine. Even now, we still talk with each other online. Last month, I got some photos from the Indian girl. To my surprise, she had a baby daughter and they were laughing happily in the photos. I was so happy for her. And it’s such a great thing to know that there are people remembering you from far away. It is one of the greatest wonders of the world. Just like a huge dragon, the Great Wall winds up and down across deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaus (高原).
Earlier this month, the British travel review website TripAdvisor named the Great Wall one of the 25 best landmarks (地标) in the world. It was the only Chinese wonder that made the list.
So, what makes tourists all over the world so interested in visiting this Chinese landmark?
Speaking as the British, it’s probably because of its size and its reputation.
The Great Wall is one of the first things any foreigner hears about when he or she is told about China as a young person. The famous myth (谜) that it can be seen from space may not be true, but it certainly helps people imagine how great and larger-than-life the Great Wall is when you first hear of it.
And it is not a place that lets you down when you visit it in person. Upon my first visit, I wasn’t expecting it to live up to the amazing things I had heard as a child, perhaps because I had never been touched by other famous world landmarks when seeing them up close. But when I reached the Great Wall I was surprised by how impressed (给……以深刻印象) I was.
No pictures can prepare you for how huge the wall really is, running for long distance with no sign of ending. You can’t help thinking about how much time and effort (精力) went into building something so impressive.
Repeated visits can take the magic away a little, as many parts look very similar, and it can get far too crowded during tourist seasons. But I’ll always treasure the first moment I stepped on the wall and was amazed by what people can build when they work together.
13. The underlined word “reputation” probably means “________”.
A. culture B. shape C. height D. fame
14 What is the famous myth of the Great Wall?
A. It can be seen from space.
B. It is the first thing any foreigner hears about.
C It runs for long distance with no sign of ending.
D. It looks similar to many other man-made wonders.
15. The Great Wall makes the writer amazed because ________.
A. it’s the symbol of Chinese history
B. it’s a place that makes people happy
C. it’s beyond what he expected when seeing it in person
D. it’s more important than any other landmark in the world
16. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To give facts about the Great Wall. B. To attract people to visit the Great Wall.
C. To share how he feels about the Great Wall. D. To tell his travelling experience in the Great Wall.

Another could grow in the poor soils which cover large areas of China.
But Yuan didn’t stop there. He had an even greater dream: a rice plant that would feed the whole world. Later, age made it more difficult for him to work. Yuan just moved his house next to the rice fields!
Yuan passed away in 2021, but his dreams live on. His rice is grow around China and in about 60 other countries. His life long efforts have helped to feed 80 million more people a year. 【答案】例文
How to manage time properly
Time is more precious than any possessions. It is equal to everyone. How you manage that valuable time determines the quality of your life.
There are three rules for effective time management. Firstly, don’t try to work full-time and take a full load. Be reasonable about how much work you can do. Secondly, make a list of all the things that you need to get done in a given time. Put the tasks in order of importance and delete any unimportant items. Thirdly, avoid lack of focus. Personal phone calls and emails can easily disturb your workday progress.
Let’s make good use of time to make our life colorful and meaningful.

Writing notes on nature can also make students become more creative. “When writing these notes you can describe everything in your own way,” said Zhang Siwen.
5. Zhang Siwen won a prize at a ________ competition after she took notes on the fruit.
A. reading B. nature C. writing D. science
6. Zhang Siwen’s notes probably include ________.

②the descriptions about the plant
③the money she paid to get the plant
④the feelings when she got the plant

Though you may just know each other for a few hours, you have someone care about you in the other side of the world. And I think that’s the amazing part of travelling.
9. The writer thinks staying in a youth hostel is ________.
A. safe B. cheap C. comfortable D. interesting
10. What can we know about the Indian girl from the text?
A. She lost touch with the writer. B. She had a baby daughter recently.
C. She was interested in photography. D. She took a trip to Europe with her family.
11. The writer believes the amazing part of travelling is ________.
A. making close friends B. taking beautiful photos
C. going on a trip alone D. visiting many famous places
12. What is the text mainly about?
A. How to have a great trip abroad. B. Where to live during a tour.
C. A personal travel story in London. D. A dream journey for students.
D
A. culture B. shape C. height D. fame
14. What is the famous myth of the Great Wall?
A. It can be seen from space.
B. It is the first thing any foreigner hears about.
C. It runs for long distance with no sign of ending.
D. It looks similar to many other man-made wonders.
15. The Great Wall makes the writer amazed because ________.
A it’s the symbol of Chinese history
B. it’s a place that makes people happy
C. it’s beyond what he expected when seeing it in person
D. it’s more important than any other landmark in the world
16. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To give facts about the Great Wall. B. To attract people to visit the Great Wall.
C. To share how he feels about the Great Wall. D. To tell his travelling experience in the Great Wall.

Under the burning sun, an elderly man moved slowly through a sea of green rice. He picked an ear of rice (稻穗), checked it with an expert eye, and moved on. It was just another day for him. He worked from morning to night, checking countless rice plants. No one could imagine what this farmer had done the day before. President Xi Jinping had presented him with the Medal of the Republic. His name was Yuan Longping.
Yuan was born in Beijing in 1930. In his youth, he was sad to discover that many Chinese people suffered from hunger. After leaving college in 1953, Yuan spent nearly 70 years solving this problem.
He believed deeply that “food is the most important thing in the world”. He dreamed of developing more productive rice plants.
However, it was easier said than done. Over 3,000 of his experiments failed. “Failure is very common in scientific research.” he once said. “Every time I fall down, I will get up and try again.” He travelled around China to realise his dream. He said: “I never stopped like a bird going after the warmth of the sun.” Finally, he succeeded in developing new types of rice plants. One produced 30% more rice than normal plants.
Yuan is remembered as a national hero for helping build China into a modern socialist country. His example continues to encourage people to follow in his footsteps.
