It’s a club for people aged 11—17 who love reading books Each month we will discuss what we have read and give recommendations to other members. There will not be a “set” of books that every member needs to read. Each time we will choose a different theme and you pick a book that you think fits.
The book can be one from your own collection or something you have read at the school library. Actually we don’t mind where you found the book. What we want to know is your thoughts on it.
There will be prizes for the best review of every month and free snacks!

Walking is the best form of exercise. It is good for the upper respiratory (与呼吸有关的) system and the legs. It helps us control our weight and blood sugar. Walking is also a good way to help you make more friends, bringing chances to see new things and meet new people. Personally, I try to walk at least 5 miles daily.
As well as walking, I also cycle around Xiamen. Cycling is great for weight loss and helps to build stamina (耐力). However, cycling does not allow for the same level of social contact as a walk. It is for this reason that I would strongly suggest that you try long-distance walking if you want to be physically healthy. I originally (最初) started walking around Xiamen because I didn’t have a car, but I soon started to enjoy the walking itself.
I have also made many friends during my walks. It’s not uncommon for my 5-mile walk to sometimes take as long as 2 or 3 hours, because I stop to chat with different shop owners along my route. These days, if I skip my walk for even one day, the people in the shops may want to know why I didn’t come.
I’ ll never forget the first time some people followed me when I was walking, and asked if it was okay for them to walk with me. I really didn’t know what to say, so I just replied that I didn’t mind. I have been invited for lunch, dinner and sometimes just to sit and drink tea with total strangers. There is nothing more pleasant than walking past a schoolyard and hearing all the kids say hello to me.
24. Why did the author have to take a walk at the very beginning?
A. Because he wanted to build his body. B. Because he enjoyed walking.
C. Because he had no car. D. Because he wished to make friends.
25. The underlined word “skip” in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to __________.
A. annoy B. quit C. revise D. arrange
26. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Cycling allows for no social contact. B. Walking is better than cycling.
C. To be healthy, it’s better to cycle. D. The author prefers walking to cycling.
27. Why did the author tell us his walking experience in the last two paragraphs?
A. To share the unforgettable experience with us.
B. To show us the meaning of walking in social contact.
C. To tell us how to develop the habit of walking.
D. To explain to us why a usual walk took him as long as 2 or 3 hours.

Researchers have found that short and intense stair climbing, which can be done almost anywhere, has great benefits for fitness.
The findings make the two most common excuses of couch potatoes untrue: no time and no access to the gym. “Stair climbing is a form of exercise anyone can do in their own home, after work or during the lunch hour,” says Martin, a lead author of the study. “This research takes interval (间歇) training out of the lab and makes it possible for everyone.”
Early studies have shown the benefits of stair climbing over continuous periods of time, up to 70 minutes a week, but researchers wanted to determine if interval training, which includes short and intense exercise separated by short periods of recovery, was a good way to improve heart fitness. Researchers recruited 31 women and tested the effect of two different experiments; each required a 10-minute exercise period, including warm-up, cool-down and recovery. The exercise periods were done three times a week over the course of six weeks.
The first experiment included three 20-second of continuous climbing in an “all-out” manner. The participants were then compared to those who went through the same experiment using an exercise bike which has already been shown to improve fitness.
For the second experiment, some women climbed up and down one flight of stairs for 60 seconds, an experiment which could be easily done at home.
Both experiments, each including a total time of 30 minutes a week, increased heart fitness, an important healthy marker that is connected with long life.
28. What does Martin say about stair climbing?
A. It saves lots of time. B. It is convenient to do.
C. It requires special training. D. It is better than going to the gym.
29. Why did researchers do the two experiments?
A. To test the results of early studies.
B. To encourage people to climb stairs.
C. To prove the benefits of continuous stair climbing.
D. To find out effect of interval training on heart fitness.
30. What can we learn from the two experiments?
A. The first one was better for fitness. B. The second one required less total time.
C. Both of them were good for heart health. D. People in the second one turned out healthier.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. How Stair Climbing Benefits People.
B. Why Stair Climbing Is the Best Exercise.
C. Stair Climbing—A Good Way to Increase Fitness.
D. Simple Stair Climbing Exercises You Can Do at Home.

In the nineteenth century, railways were built in Britain from the big industrial cities like Leeds and Manchester to seaside towns like Blackpool and Scarborough. For the first time, ordinary working people could visit the seaside. They used to take day trips on Sundays or during special days. People usually sat in deckchairs on the beach, swam in the sea and ate fish as well as chips. Children could watch the puppet show Punch and Judy, build sandcastles and ride donkeys on the beach.
In the 1950s, the first mass package holidays were organized. Throughout the 60s and 70s, the British increasingly began to give up the traditional seaside holiday in favor of sunshine and warming seas in the countries like Spain and Greece. Caravan and camping holidays also became popular in the 60s as car ownership increased.
In the 1990s, budget (特价的) airline companies like easyJet cut down the cost of air tickets to many European destinations. Long-distance flights also came down in price, so holidays to destinations in Australia and Asia became affordable to ordinary families. A growing number of people began to book their own flights and accommodations and as a result, the package holiday market decreased.
The holiday habits of the British are continuing to change. Increasingly, levels of wealth mean that, for many families, a second foreign holiday — often a winter skiing holiday — is possible. City breaks are also growing in popularity, and not only to nearby destinations — Las Vegas, Dubai and Cape Town are all favorites for long weekends. And independent travel is becoming more and more popular as the Internet allows holidaymakers to find the best deals online.
32 When did ordinary British people begin to spend their holidays by the sea?
A. In the 1960s. B. In the 1990s. C. In the 19th century. D. In the 21st century.
33. Why did the British go to Australia and Asia for their holidays in the 1990s?
A. They could enjoy sunshine and warmer seas there.
B. Air tickets became cheaper for ordinary families to afford.
C. It was convenient for them to book air tickets online.
D. Their children expected to experience the traditions there.
34. What is the example of Las Vegas, Dubai and Cape Town used to show?
A. The British like to take a holiday abroad.
B. The British enjoy going on a package holiday.
C The British are keen on travelling independently.
D. The British are fond of taking a break in far cities.
35. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The British holidays. B. The British way of life.
C. The tourism in the UK. D. The ordinary working people in Britain.

It was New Year’s Eve. I was 15 and feeling sad because there was not enough money to buy the dress I wanted. We did the housework early that night, so I thought Dad wanted extra time for us to spend together.
Instead, he dressed himself again and went outside. “Come on, Elizabeth,” he said. “Dress yourself warmly. It’s cold out.”
Outside, I became even more annoyed. Not only wasn’t I getting the dress; now Dad was pulling me out in the cold. We pulled in front of the woodshed (柴棚), and started loading wood. Finally, I asked, “Dad, what are you doing?” “Have you passed by Mrs. Clark’s lately?” he asked.
Mrs. Clark lived about two miles down the road from us. Her husband had passed away the year before, leaving her and three children to raise on her own.
“Yeah,” I said. “Why?” “I rode by just today,” Dad said. “Little Jake was trying to find a few pieces of wood. They’re out of wood, Elizabeth.”
Dad then returned to the house, carrying a large bag of flour over his right shoulder and a smaller bag of something in his left hand. “What’s in the little bag?” I asked. “Shoes. They’re out of shoes. I got the children a box of candies, too. It just wouldn’t be New Year without some candy.”
We unloaded the wood behind the Clarks’ house and knocked on the door. It opened a crack (缝隙), and a fearful voice said, “Who is it?” “James Cotton, ma’am, and my daughter, Elizabeth. Could we come in for a bit?”

Book Chat Club
Calling all book lovers aged 11 to 17 years old!
The Margaret River Bookshop and the Margaret River Library work together to start a Book Chat Club.
What is a Book Chat Club?
It’s a club for people aged 11—17 who love reading books. Each month we will discuss what we have read and give recommendations to other members.
If you want to join us please complete our sign-up sheet (报名表) at either the Library or the Bookshop.

C 25. B 26. D 27. B
根据第二段的“I originally started walking around Xiamen because I didn’t have a car, but I soon started to enjoy the walking itself.(我最初开始在厦门四处走动是因为没有车,但很快就开始享受起散步本身了。)”
根据第二段的“However, cycling does not allow for the same level of social contact as a walk. It is for this reason that I will strongly suggest that you try long-distance walking if you want to be physically healthy. (然而,骑自行车不允许与散步同等程度的社交接触。正是因为这个原因,如果你想保持身体健康,我强烈建议你尝试长途步行)”以及第三段的“I have also made many friends during my walks.(我在散步时也交了很多朋友)”可知,文中列举了走路带给他的好处,由此可推知,与骑车相比,作者更喜欢走路。故选D。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段的“I have also made many friends during my walks. It’s not uncommon for my 5-mile walk to sometimes take as long as 2 or 3 hours, because I stop to chat with different shop owners along my route.(我在散步时也交了很多朋友。我步行5英里有时需要2到3个小时,这并不罕见,因为我会停下来与沿途不同的店主聊天)”以及最后一段的“I have been invited for lunch, dinner and sometimes just to sit and drink tea with total strangers. There is nothing more pleasant than walking past a schoolyard and hearing all the kids say hello to me.(我被邀请共进午餐、晚餐,有时只是和完全陌生的人坐在一起喝茶。没有什么比走过校园,听到所有的孩子向我问好更令人愉快的了)”可知,这两段主要讲述了作者在散步过程中结识了许多不同的朋友,给作者带来欢乐,由此可推知,作者在最后两段告诉我们他的行走经历是为了向我们展示散步在社交方面的意义。故选B。
C
B 29. D 30. C 31. C

根据第二段中““Stair climbing is a form of exercise anyone can do in their own home, after work or during the lunch hour,“ says Martin,(“爬楼梯是一种锻炼方式,任何人都可以在自己的家里,下班后或在午餐时间爬楼梯,”Martin说)”可知,Martin说任何人都可以在自己的家里,下班后或在午餐时间爬楼梯,这说明爬楼梯是很方便的一种锻炼方式,故选B。
根据第三段中“but researchers wanted to determine if interval training, which includes short and intense exercise separated by short periods of recovery, was a good way to improve heart fitness. Researchers recruited 31 women and tested the effect of two different experiments(但是研究人员想要确定间歇训练法,包括短时间的高强度运动和短时间的恢复,是否是改善心脏健康的好方法。 研究人员招募了31名女性,并测试了两个不同实验的效果)”可知,研究人员测试了两个实验是为了了解间歇训练法对心脏健康的影响。故选D。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Both experiments, each including a total time of 30 minutes a week, increased heart fitness, an important healthy marker that is connected with long life.(两个实验都包括每周总共30分钟爬楼梯的时间,实验都提高了心脏健康,这是一个与长寿有关的重要健康标志。)”
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Researchers have found that short and intense stair climbing, which can be done almost anywhere, has great benefits for fitness.(研究人员发现,几乎在任何地方都可以进行的短距离、高强度的爬楼梯运动,对健康有很大的好处。)”

32. When did ordinary British people begin to spend their holidays by the sea?
C. The British are keen on travelling independently.
D The British are fond of taking a break in far cities.
35. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The British holidays. B. The British way of life.
C. The tourism in the UK. D. The ordinary working people in Britain.
C 33. B 34. D 35. A

前文“Note-taking is an important skill in and out of school, you can make the difference between passing and failing a test, being good at a job or even enjoying a complicated movie. (在学校内外,记笔记都是一项重要的技能,它关系到考试的及格和不及格,关系到你是否擅长一项工作,甚至关系到你是否喜欢一部复杂的电影)”引入记笔记的话题,说明其重要性,后文“We’re taught from a very young age that when a teacher starts passing a load of information, we should write down as much what they are saying as possible. This is rather inefficient way to take notes. (我们从小就被教导,当老师开始传递大量信息时,我们应该尽可能多地写下他们所说的内容。这种记笔记的方法效率很低)”说明我们从小被教育的记笔记方式效率很低,因此D项“But unluckily, most people don’t know how to take notes (但不幸的是,大多数人不知道如何记笔记)”符合语境,点明很多人不会记笔记,和前文构成转折,后文是对其具体说明。故选D。
【37题详解】
前文“Note-taking should actually act as a form of learning. (记笔记实际上应该是一种学习方式)”说明记笔记的作用,因此F项“It helps you work your way through the lesson as the teacher is giving it (它可以帮助你在老师讲课的过程中摸索出自己的思路)”符合语境,解释其作用是帮助摸索思路,承接前文,其中的It指代前文的Note-taking。故选F。
前文“Don’t worry about catching every single thing your teacher’s saying. (不要担心听懂老师说的每一句话)”提醒不必担忧弄懂每句话,后文“trying to understand the lecture (试着理解讲座内容)”建议去理解,因此C项“Spend more time listening (花更多的时间倾听)”符合语境,建议去倾听,起到过渡的作用,后文的understand建立在其中的listening上。故选C。
【39题详解】
空处是段落标题,需统领段落内容。后文“This will help you remember your notes visually. Write questions in red, definitions in blue, conclusions in green. (这将帮助你在视觉上记住你的笔记。用红色写问题,用蓝色写定义,用绿色写结论)”具体说明如何用彩色笔记笔记,以及这样做的好处,因此A项“Use colored pens (使用彩色笔)”符合语境,契合段落内容,选项内容为后文的This指代的对象,其中的colored与后文的red、blue和green呼应。故选A。
前文“Try teaching the materials to your classmate. (试着把这些材料教给你的同学)”建议用笔记材料去教同学,因此E项“This will be a great sign to see if you’ve actually learned anything (这将是一个很好的标志,看看你是否真的学到了什么)”符合语境,解释这样做的原因,承接前文,其中的This指代前一句的内容。故选E。

Dear Michael,
Hearing that you have trouble performing well in exams, as your pen pal, I can absolutely understand what you are feeling now. Do remember that even the top students make mistakes sometimes. Therefore, don’t put too much pressure on yourself.
As a matter of fact, learning from your mistakes in the previous exams is an effective way to stop making the same mistakes next time. Moreover, during the exams, it would be wise to make a good plan to distribute your time properly based on each exam paper, and leaving a few minutes at the end to check your answers is also recommended. Most significantly, you are supposed to develop the habit of being careful and serious in your daily routine, reviewing what you have learnt every day to make sure you are moving forward.
Enjoy the challenge that each exam brings to you. I believe a good learning habit will ultimately help you gain success in the following exams and your life as well.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Mrs. Clark opened the door of the house where the three children were wrapped (裹着) in a blanket.

Paragraph 2:
I understood very well that Dad had given me a gift much greater than a dress.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
Mrs. Clark opened the door of the house where the three children were wrapped in a blanket. “We brought you a few things, ma’am,” Dad said, and handed the bags to her. She opened one bag and took out the shoes slowly. And she bit her lower lip to keep it from trembling as tears ran down her cheeks. “We brought a load of wood, too.” Then Dad turned to me, “Elizabeth, let’s heat this place up.” Soon the fire worked and everyone was in cheerful spirits. The kids laughed when Dad handed them each a piece of candy. Mrs. Clark also wore a smile and the whole room was filled with warmth despite the freezing winter night.
Paragraph 2:
I understood very well that Dad had given me a gift much greater than a dress. Just now, I saw the three children, including little Jake, running around my dad, dancing and laughing as if this man had been their father as well. Beside the fireplace, Mrs. Clark couldn’t contain her feelings with tears streaming down her cheeks. At the moment, I was aware of how tough it was for this family to get through everything after losing a husband and father and how timely our offer was. Not until then did I realise the happiness we brought to this family is actually the most valuable gift for the New Year.
