1. SHOULD WE FIGHT NEW TECHNOLOGY?
This morning, I saw the shocking headline: “Passenger Dies When Car Crashes in Driverless Mode”. In the article, various people said that the public should oppose the idea of developing driverless cars. They said that some advances in technology were unnecessary and could even be dangerous. Hence, we should cease accepting technology just because it is new. The newspaper reported that the car company had already apologized for the accident, but the families of the deceased said it was not enough. Nevertheless, the company still claimed that most people would be travelling in driverless cars one day soon.
On the one hand, there are many different groups of people around the world who live happily in the absence of new technology. Probably the most well-known are the Amish, a group of Christians living in rural America. They do not own or drive cars, watch TV, or use the Internet. They have lived mainly as farmers since the 18th century and they will probably be living the same way in the distant future. They advocate a simple life with an emphasis on hard work, family, and community. They think that is better than caring about luxuries or following the lives of the rich and famous. It could even be argued that the Amish’s quality of life is better since they live in and appreciate the natural environment rather than living in large, polluted cities.
注意:
1. 续写段落不少于150个词;

2. “A nursing home would be safer, Dad,” Arlyn told her father, Jim.
“No way,” Jim interrupted. His wife passed away just a year before. At 91, he still wanted to remain in the cottage he and his wife had built.
Jim started experiencing an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease. Arlyn found his decline was indeed all-consuming. However, she herself was in her late sixties; her house was a 40-minute drive from the cottage. One day, when she read about a new eldercare service called Care. coach, it fueled her interest. For about $200 a month, a computerized avatar (头像) (controlled remotely by a human caregiver) would watch over a home-bound person 24 hours a day. She signed up immediately.
A week later, a tablet arrived. Following the instructions, Arlyn uploaded dozens of family pictures. Then an animated dog appeared on the screen. She presented the tablet to Jim, pointing to the screen pet, and said excitedly, “Here Dad. You have a new companion.” Jim, doubtful about the dog’s service, knew he had to learn how to get along with the dog before Alzheimer’s took hold.
Within a week, Jim and his dog, whom he named Pony, settled into a routine. Every 15 minutes or so, Pony would look for Jim calling his name if he was out of view. Sometimes Jim would “pet” to awake the sleeping Pony on screen. Pony reminded Jim which caretaker would be visiting to do the tasks: preparing meals, driving him to a senior center, etc. Pony would read poetry aloud or discuss the news. When Pony praised Jim’s sweater, Jim repaid by petting Pony’s screen with his finger sending hearts floating up from the dog’s head. One evening when Arlyn came to visit her father as usual, she was amazed to find that Pony was holding up a photo of her late mum to her dad between its paws.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Jim stared at the photo fondly, with tears welling up in his eyes.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Seeing the close bond between Pony and her dad, Arlyn felt a relief.

3. Here’s the truth: robots are already starting to take jobs from hourly human workers, and it’s going to continue. Research from McKinsey found that 45% of current jobs can be automated. We need to stop avoiding the situation and create real solutions to help displaced workers. And there are a number of ways displaced workers could survive. To name but a few:
Not everyone will work
A potential idea is that not everyone will work. Perhaps it will be more of a sci-fi situation where only people who want to work will work. All other tasks will be done by robots, and those who choose not to work can enjoy other activities. That extreme possibility is definitely a long way off, though it can still be considered.
AI and robots are the inevitable future. They will play a role in everyone’s future jobs, whether that means they make it easier or replace it. We need to have conversations now about what to do with displaced workers so we can be prepared when the time comes.
Move them to other jobs
Instead of learning new skills, this solution encourages workers to use their existing skills in a new industry. While it’s true there are often plenty of jobs available in these areas, unfortunately these important jobs often don’t pay well. In large cities, working in these jobs simply wouldn’t give people enough money to live without a universal basic income. However, these positions are fairly safe from being displaced by robots and can provide job security.
The technologies create new jobs for both the short and long-term
New inventions could be introduced that turn everything on its head and require new skills. Some experts have predicted that soft human skills like communication, creativity and empathy will always be needed because robots can’t replicate those skills. However, new inventions could open the door to other hard skills that could be required and in high demand in the future.
Re-train displaced workers
注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1
Many experts think that robots can’t be in place of all human jobs, so robots need to work alongside with humans.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2
Even employees who aren’t at risk for being displaced should expand their skills.

4. Back in the early 1980s, the idea of home computers was catching on. I wasn't keen on getting one. Somehow, I evolved and have owned several computers over the years. Some days, I loved my computer, but more often than not, I hated it. I didn't grow up with them, and they were a challenge to my mental health. Dealing with modern technology was my introduction to stress, and I know who to blame: my children.
They weren't satisfied that their dad and I finally bought a computer and learned to send e-mails. We were quite happy with that, but next came a cellphone. Then just talking on the phone was not acceptable; they insisted we learn to text as well. We couldn't get a break.
I remember well the night that Facebook became a household word around here. Those kids of ours were determined to set up a joint account for us. It took some convincing. We felt no guilt for grating on (激怒) their nerves considering the drama they'd sometimes created for us during their teenage years. A little payback wouldn't hurt those two.
More recently, my husband and I were forced into getting rid of our flip phones and getting smartphones. I will admit that I progressed into appreciating mine. I liked speaking to Siri and finding out what I needed to know in an instant. I enjoyed having Internet access everywhere I went. I felt a sense of accomplishment; my husband-not so much. To this day, he would happily take back his flip phone.
Last Christmas, our children surprised us with yet another popular form of technology-Alexa. The girls took our smartphones in hand and got us programmed. Before we fully understood what was happening, we could tell Alexa to turn our lamp on or off, and she would. To be honest, we were a bit annoyed at having to learn how to use yet another device, but we decided to keep it. We mastered turning the lamp on and off, and once again I got the hang of it sooner than my husband did. I became his Alexa coach.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
One night, Alexa did not turn on the lamp when I gave the command.

Technology Changes Life
Good morning, everyone!
I’m thrilled to be here today to discuss how technology has profoundly shaped our lives.
Technology has become an indispensable part of our daily lives. It has revolutionized communication, allowing us to stay connected with friends and family by means of video chats, emails, or social media. Moreover, technology has transformed the way we learn. We can access vast amounts of information as long as the Internet is available. Online courses have made learning more accessible and engaging.
From my perspective, while technology brings convenience and efficiency, it may also pose problems, such as a rise in unemployment, an increased risk of personal information disclosure, etc. As technology continues to advance, it is essential for us to adapt and use it wisely to ensure a positive impact on society.

Robots in Our Lives
With the rapid development of technology, robots are playing an increasingly important role in our lives. They can bring us many benefits. Robots are able to perform various tasks, such as dangerous tasks which may cause injuries to human beings. They can also work in harsh environments like in space or deep underwater. They can also assist us in daily activities like cleaning, washing and cooking, which can save us a lot of time, Additionally, robots are being used in industries, improving productivity and efficiency. However, there are some concerns regarding the potential impact of robot development, such as unemployment and safety issues. They can do numerous jobs in place of humans in some industries and they may cause accidents, which could affect people’s safety.

My Favourite Character
As part of the school reading festival, I would like to share with you my favorite character from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It tells of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world. The creatures there are peculiar, intelligent and anthropomorphic. She experienced many fantastic things in wonderland which won’t happen in the real world.
Among the various characters in the story, my favorite character is Alice. I am deeply impressed with many plots. When Alice falls down the hole, she doesn’t cry like a common girl. On the contrary she shows her bravery to us. That really impresses and moves me. We can learn a lot from this girl with a good imagination, manners and behavior.

Paragraph 2:
Personally, I have benefited quite a lot from technological advances.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On the other hand, new technology has provided people everywhere with many benefits over the years. For example, the latest weather-tracking computer programs give people lots of warnings about potential natural disasters, which saves many lives. Moreover, the Internet has made it possible for friends and family to keep in touch easily even if they are on opposite sides of the world. It has also made finding opportunities in life much easier, as it allows people to make larger networks of friends through using social media.
Personally, I have benefited quite a lot from technological advances. I found my career as an AI designer through a social media network. My health monitor, which I wear all the time, has also helped me get into the best shape of my life. Of course, when new technology changes the way we live, it can be a scary prospect. Nevertheless, I will always look on the positive side of change and accept it rather than resist it.

Jim stared at the photo fondly, with tears welling up in his eyes. Memories flashed through Jim’s mind. It had been more than a year since his wife’s death and hardly had he mentioned her anymore. That day, though, he gazed at the photo affectionately and declared emotionally, “I still love her”. Sensing Jim’s sadness, Pony sent hearts to Jim on the screen and comforted him. Uplifted by Pony’s loving remarks, Jim petted Pony’ screen with his finger sending hearts floating up from the dog’s head again. Pony responded with its tail wagging cheerfully. Arlyn sat in silence, with an illusion of slipping back to the old happy days.
Seeing the close bond between Pony and her dad, Arlyn felt a relief. She was amazed at Pony’s heart-warming service and her dad’s fondness for Pony. Pony was more than just a virtual companion; rather, he had become a member of the family, a loyal friend who had helped them through the tough times. With time going by, Arlyn noticed the improvement in her father’s cognitive ability and mood, and he got more engaged in conversations. Arlyn was grateful to Pony. Knowing that Pony was not a substitute for human interaction, she resolved to cherish every moment with her dad, for the presence of loved ones was crucial.

Paragraph 2
Even employees who aren’t at risk for being displaced should expand their skills.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1,
Many experts think that robots can’t be in place of all human jobs, so robots need to work alongside with humans. The majority of jobs that have been displaced or that are at risk for being displaced are process-driven jobs. These are positions that can easily be automated, such as manufacturing, customer service and transportation. Robots can’t take the place of the jobs that require a personal or creative touch. Displaced workers could potentially get retrained to apply their skills elsewhere. A displaced customer service employee knows how to solve problems and be efficient. They could potentially reskill to build on their existing skills and work in a different area.
Paragraph 2,
Even employees who aren’t at risk for being displaced should expand their skills. People move between jobs more often these days, and that provides opportunities to expand their skills. The most prepared employees take advantage of online courses, community college classes and industry seminars to expand their skills and even get certifications in new areas. Many companies already provide training and reskilling for their employees. Perhaps more organizations and governments need to follow in their footsteps.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
One night, Alexa did not turn on the lamp when I gave the command.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
We should thank our children and grandchildren.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One night, Alexa did not turn on the lamp when I gave the command. I tried to say “Turn on the light” to it countless times, but Alexa didn’t work. “New technologies are always unreliable.” my husband complained. I searched the Internet and immediately found the reason why Alex couldn’t work. I just needed to tell Alex to set the light color to white or whatever color I wanted, and then it would turn on the light. Then Alex turned on the light itself.
We should thank our children and grandchildren. It was our children and grandchildren that taught us to use technology so that I could find a solution on the Internet by myself. Without them, our life is always invariable and boring. Our children and grandchildren “force” us to accept and use technology, which seems to put us under pressure. However, the fact is that our children and grandchildren let us really accept and use technology to make our life more convenient.
