This collection of Chicago’s best restaurants provides answers to the classic question. Luella’s Southern Kitchen TEL (773) 961-8196 This restaurant serves some of the city’s best Southern food, including shrimp, fried chicken and waffles. This restaurant on the North Side is also a popular brunch destination. It’s a casual spot with counter ordering, but it brings a serious menu where everyone can find something hearty. Community Tavern TEL (773) 283-6080 Nowadays, the restaurant has expanded its menu away from its origins as a neighborhood steakhouse. But fortunately, the neighborhood aspect remains. The bar program is rich, and kids under 12 eat free on certain days. The menu keeps innovating, which isn’t a bad thing. For example, there’s a section of Asian-style dumplings, including one stuffed with mushroom butter. Smoque BBQ TEL (773) 545-7427 With two smokers to prepare St. Louis- style roast meat, this destination in the Northwest Side neighborhood of Irving Park delivers barbecue in the styles of Kansas City and Memphis. During the pandemic, Barry Sorkin, the owner, expanded takeout and outdoor dining options, including a patio in the former parking lot. Pat’s Pizza TEL (773) 248-0168 Chicago thin-crust pizza is having a moment, with the city’s pizza- makers eager to protest the convention that here only serves thick- crust pizza. Pat’s Pizza has a storied history of popularizing thin-crust pizza. This family-owned spot proudly makes some of the crispiest, thinnest pizzas around. Pat’s uses its own sausage, which also helps set its flavor apart. Pizzas are available for takeout, delivery, patio, and indoor dining. 1. What number should you call if you want to eat brunch? A. (773) 545-7427. B. (773) 283-6080. C. (773) 248-0168. D. (773) 961-8196. 2. What is the feature of Community Tavern? A. The menu keeps unchanged. B. It has lost its neighborhood element. C. People can eat Asian food here. D. People can eat free on certain days. 3. What do Smoque BBQ and Pat’s Pizza have in common? A. They offer BBQ and pizza. B. They offer takeout service. C. They have free parking. D. They have a long history. 1. D 2. C 3. The Mississippi teacher said she’s lost about 150 pounds since 2008, and has fulfilled a longtime dream — to run and finish the New York City(NYC) Marathon. “It was a dream that came true. I’ve been wanting to do it for 12 years,” Barnes said. Barnes has come a long way over the past decade. At one point, she weighed nearly 300 pounds. “I did have a big setback around 2018, but I got myself together and persevered (坚持不懈) and got with it again,” she said. Running has been an essential part for Barnes. She has so far run many half marathons and four full marathons. “I can say my life is definitely better, not only for getting mentally and physically healthy but for meeting incredible people along,” Barnes said of her experience with running. Although it wasn’t her first marathon, Barnes said the NYC Marathon was still a challenging run. At mile 18, she said she started having “sharp back spasms (痉挛)”, but despite it all, she would not exchange the experience for anything. “The goal might not be exactly what you want, but you will persevere through it and try your best to reach the end goal.” In the end, Barnes completed the NYC Marathon with a final time of 6 hours, 58 minutes and 53 seconds. “I credit everyone for my achievements. The crowds are simply amazing. And I’m also inspired by the people I’ve encountered. Believe in yourself that you can do it, and start with small achievable and measurable goals. Find something you like to do and something that inspires and motivates you,” she said. Today, Barnes runs about five days a week and does both strength and cross training. She plans on running again soon, setting her sights on a half marathon in Arizona next February and running in all 50 states with her husband. She and her husband also hope to run the NYC Marathon together next year. 4. What does the first paragraph mainly talk about? A. Barnes managed to lose weight via surgery. B. Barnes has overcome setbacks in her life. C. Barnes has fulfilled her long-standing wish. D. Barnes has suffered a lot over the last 15 years. 5. What does Barnes try to convey in the second paragraph? A She benefits a lot from running. B. She has been mentally cured. C. She has run a lot of marathons in her life. D. She wants to make friends through running. 6. What do we know about Barnes’ participation in the NYC Marathon? A. She highly treasured the experience. B. She finished it with the best record. C. She completed it without difficulty. D. She considered it the most challenging. 7. Which of the following can best describe Barnes? A. Demanding but patient. B. Stubborn but friendly. C. Warm-hearted and optimistic. D. Strong-willed and ambitious. 4. C 5. A 6. A 7. “I did have a big setback around 2018, but I got myself together and persevered (坚持不懈) and got with it again,” she said.(在过去的15年里,李·安妮·巴恩斯从一个电视迷变成了一个马拉松运动员。 根据第二段“I can say my life is definitely better, not only for getting mentally and physically healthy but for meeting incredible people along(我可以说我的生活确实变得更好了,不仅因为身心健康,而且因为遇到了很棒的人)”可知,她从跑步中获益良多。故选A。 根据第三段“At mile 18, she said she started having “sharp back spasms (痉挛)”, but despite it all, she would not exchange the experience for anything.(在18英里处,她说她开始出现“剧烈的背部痉挛”,但尽管如此,她不会用任何东西来交换这种经历)”可推知,Barnes非常珍视这次跑纽约市马拉松赛的经历,觉得任何东西都无法换取这段经历。故选A。 根据第一段“I did have a big setback around 2018, but I got myself together and persevered (坚持不懈) and got with it again(2018年前后,我确实遇到了很大的挫折,但我振作起来,坚持不懈,重新开始了)”可知,尽管遇到挫折,Barnes还是振作起来并坚持了下来。 根据最后一段“She plans on running again soon, setting her sights on a half marathon in Arizona next February and running in all 50 states with her husband. She and her husband also hope to run the NYC Marathon together next year.(她计划很快再次跑步,她的目标是明年2月在亚利桑那州参加半程马拉松比赛,并与丈夫一起跑遍所有50个州。 D。 C New glove can translate sign language instantly through an app, researchers say California researchers developed a glove embedded with electronic sensors that can translate American Sign Language (ASL) into English in real time through an app on your smartphone. Unlike its past counterparts, the new glove is lightweight, inexpensive and long-lasting. The device could help remove communication barriers between signers and non-signers. Hopefully, this may open up an easy way for people who use sign language to communicate directly with non-signers without needing someone else to translate for them. The team worked with four people who are deaf and use ASL and had them repeat gestures up to 15 times while wearing the glove-like device, simultaneously teaching a machine how to recognize them. The glove has thin, stretchable sensors made from “electrically conducting yarns” that run up each finger and convert the movements into signals. These signals are sent to a “dollar-coin-sized” circuit board placed on the person’s wrist, which then wirelessly transfers them over to a smartphone. The system was able to recognize 660 hand motions and finger placements that stand for each letter in the English alphabet, different phrases and each number. The algorithm (计算程序) recognized the correct signs about 99% of the time, and in less than one second — or about a tone word per second. The researchers also placed sensors in between the participants eyebrows and on the sides of their mouths to “capture facial expressions that are a part of ASL”. The same exact hand-shape and movement can totally change meaning because of the facial expression that is used to accompany it. Take the word MUCH. The degree of how much can totally be determined by the facial expression alone while the sign stays the same. Researchers said the glove would need to learn more vocabulary and be able to translate signs faster in order to get a commercial version of it in stores. 8. Who is the new glove intended for? A. Translators. B. Deaf people. C. English learners. D. Sign language users. 9. What does Paragraph 4 mainly say about the new glove? A. Its reliability. B. Its components. C. Its working principle. D. Its broad applications. 10. How do researchers improve the glove’s correctness of recognition? A. By connecting it to smartphones. B. By lengthening the time of catching gestures. C. By inputting more letters and words in English. D. By catching information from participants’ faces. 11. What will researchers do with the glove in the future? A. Bring it to market. B. Update its outlook. C. Extend its service life. D. Improve its performance. D 9. C 10. D 11. 根据文章第二段“The device could help remove communication barriers between signers and non-signers. Hopefully, this may open up an easy way for people who use sign language to communicate directly with non-signers without needing someone else to translate for them.(该设备有助于消除手语使用者和非手语使用者之间的沟通障碍。 根据文章第四段“The glove has thin, stretchable sensors made from “electrically conducting yarns” that run up each finger and convert the movements into signals. These signals are sent to a “dollar-coin-sized” circuit board placed on the person’s wrist, which then wirelessly transfers them over to a smartphone.(手套上装有由“导电纱线”制成的薄而可拉伸的传感器,这些传感器沿每根手指延伸,并将动作转换为信号。 根据文章第六段“The researchers also placed sensors in between the participants eyebrows and on the sides of their mouths to “capture facial expressions that are a part of ASL”.(研究人员还在参与者的眉毛之间和嘴巴两侧放置了传感器,以“捕捉作为美国手语一部分的面部表情”)”可知,研究人员在参与者的眉毛之间和嘴巴两侧放置了传感器来捕捉作为美国手语一部分的面部表情。 根据文章最后一段“Researchers said the glove would need to learn more vocabulary and be able to translate signs faster in order to get a commercial version of it in stores.(研究人员表示,为了让这款手套实现商业化并在商店出售,它需要学习更多的词汇,并能够更快地翻译手语)”可知,研究人员还有很多工作要做,以使手套具有商业价值。 D。 D Chinese food is well received by the world. Who doesn’t long for a favorite Chinese dish? But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East — the ancient custom of “tonic (滋补) food”. Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one’s well-being or avoid sickness. For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil (麻油) hot pot every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as goat meat and spinach, are seen as “hot”, while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radishes, are seen as “cold”. One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot” or “cold” food. However, how much “hot” or “cold” food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health. The custom of employing tonic food for a healthier life also influences the catering industry. Chinese herbal medicines, such as wolfberry (枸杞), can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as overworked office staff, in need of a modest pick-me-up. So, whether you need to boost your strength with a large helping of chicken soup, or increase your mental powers with a serving of fish soup, you may find that this ancient Chinese custom could be just the tonic you were looking for. 12. What is the present situation of tonic food? A. It is catching less attention. B. It is enjoyed by many young people. C. It is well-known worldwide. D. It is becoming increasingly popular. 13. What is believed to benefit new mothers? A. Chinese cabbage. B. Fruit tea. C. Fish soup. D. Sesame oil hot pot. 14. Which of the following best explains “catering” underlined in Paragraph 3? A. Medicine. B. Restaurant. C. Manufacture. D. Agriculture. 15. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. The Charm of Chinese Cuisine B. The Popularity of Tonic Food C. An Introduction of Chinese Tonic Food D. Differences Between Hot Food and Cold Food 【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. 根据第一段中“But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East — the ancient custom of “tonic (滋补) food”.(但关于中餐,有一个有趣的概念在西方几乎闻所未闻,而东方的年轻人也越来越忽视它——那就是“滋补”的古老习俗)”可知,滋补食品它引起的关注越来越少。故选A项。 根据第二段中“For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil (麻油) hot pot every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body.(例如,新妈妈在产后的第一个月里每天吃麻油火锅曾经是一种习俗。 根据第三段中“Chinese herbal medicines, such as wolfberry(枸杞), can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as overworked office staff, in need of a modest pick-me-up.(在许多餐馆菜单上都可以找到枸杞等中草药,它们要么被添加到果茶中,要么被作为有益的添加剂添加到菜肴中。 根据文章大意以及第一段中“But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East — the ancient custom of “tonic (滋补) food”.(但关于中餐,有一个有趣概念在西方几乎闻所未闻,而东方的年轻人也越来越忽视它——那就是“滋补”的古老习俗)”可知,文章主要介绍了正日益被东方年轻人说忽视的中国的补品。 Cleaning your room can feel like a challenging task, but it’s likely a quicker and easier process than you imagine! It was the great Christmas shopping time. I asked my son and daughter to go together, but they preferred to play at home. People were busy buying gifts for their beloved ones. It seemed that the bigger the gifts were the better they would be. I shook my head sadly and walked on. I was shopping alone trying to pick up some thick winter socks to warm my frozen feet. As I rounded the corner in the store I saw a Christmas tree full of paper angels (天使). On each angel was the name of a needy child whose family couldn’t afford to buy them a gift that year. Shoppers who picked an angel could buy a simple toy or gift. The store would wrap it and send it to the child that Christmas. Around the tree I saw a teenage boy and girl picking out several angels. Their mother was smiling while she watched them. I walked up next to her and started talking with her. She told me that her children started this several years ago when she first explained to them what the Charity Angel tree was for. Each offered to give up one of their toys that year so that a needy child could have one. It didn’t stop then, though. Each year since the kids had saved money they earned throughout the year and bought more and more children the gifts they wouldn’t have otherwise. It had become a family tradition. I smiled when she finished, and walked over to the tree. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Waving to the two happy children I left the store, planning what to do next Christmas. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 I smiled when she finished, and walked over to the tree. Feeling eager and excited, I reached for the paper angels. “Who will be the child?” I whispered. “In spite of my struggle, I would like to offer her a simple Christmas gift.” At this time, the teenage boy and girl whose mother I talked with just now approached me, showing me their gifts which were wrapped by the store, broad smiles on their faces. Definitely, their virtue really made a big difference to me. I really admired them for their being so caring and kind to help needy children. After a while, we said goodbye with a hug. Waving to the two happy children, I left the store, planning what to do next Christmas. On my arrival at my home, I was greeted by my son and daughter. As soon as I sat down, I poured out the Charity Angle tree to them in detail. What’s more, I explained to them the gift that I chose. After listening with great interest, they shouted, “From now on, we will save money and buy gifts for more children”. We agreed to make it a family tradition at the Christmas shopping time every year. Obviously, it was small acts of kindness that add up, which is significant to our society. 伸手去拿:reach for/reach out for ②.提供某人某物:offer sb sth/provide sb with sth ③.大声说:shout/exclaim 情绪类 ①.赞赏:admire/appreciate ②.兴奋的:excited/thrilled 【点睛】[高分句型1] At this time, the teenage boy and girl whose mother I talked with just now approached me, showing me their gifts which were wrapped by the store, broad smiles on their faces. B. She wants to make friends through running. 6. What do we know about Barnes’ participation in the NYC Marathon? A. She highly treasured the experience. B. She finished it with the best record. C. She completed it without difficulty. D. She considered it the most challenging. 7. Which of the following can best describe Barnes? A. Demanding but patient. B. Stubborn but friendly. C. Warm-hearted and optimistic. D. Strong-willed and ambitious. C New glove can translate sign language instantly through an app, researchers say California researchers developed a glove embedded with electronic sensors that can translate American Sign Language (ASL) into English in real time through an app on your smartphone. D Chinese food is well received by the world. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Waving to the two happy children, I left the store, planning what to do next Christmas. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
