As a quiet and shy girl, I feared improvising in front of strangers. However, I knew I wanted to work as a science communicator after finishing my Ph.D., so it seemed like a perfect chance to learn how to speak and communicate with others effectively. I signed up, knowing the experience would give me help. During our first class, we learned an important concept of improvisation: “yes, and.” It means that, as improvisers, we’d better accept what fellow performers say. If someone says that rhinos (犀牛) are librarians, for example, then rhinos are librarians. We do not question the logic; we say “yes” and then continue with the scene as if nothing is wrong. The first few scenes were hard, but as weeks turned into months, I became more comfortable and even started to enjoy our classes. I became better at listening, relating to my conversation partners, and communicating clearly in the moment. Once when I was giving a presentation about my science, an audience member surprised me with a question that didn’t grow out of the information I’d presented. Instead of getting confused and nervous, I took the “yes, and” approach—accepting the question and letting my mind focus on why it was asked. That helped me find an appropriate answer. I got pretty excited about it. The benefits of improvisation go beyond communication. Before attending the class, I would get stuck when my experiments produced unexpected data, thinking that I had made a mistake. But now, instead of getting discouraged, I will stay open to the possibility that the results are real, keep exploring the data and end up identifying a new type of cell—one that isn’t behaving as expected. I think all scientists can benefit from this lesson. If the data say rhinos are librarians, then it’s worth finding out whether rhinos are, in fact, librarians. As scientists, our job isn’t to challenge data that support, a preconceived story, but to say “yes, and.” 4. Why did the author attend the improvisation class? A. To get a different experience. B. To finish her Ph.D. at university. C. To give up her job as a science communicator. D. To improve her speaking and communicating ability. 5. What was the author’s change after attending the improvisation class? A. She formed her own idea quickly. B. She came up with lots of creative responses. C. She paid more attention to the logic of answers. D. She became a good listener before giving an opinion. 6. The author mentions applying the “yes, and” approach to her scientific experiments to ________. A explain the process of using the method B. prove the benefits of the improvisation class C. share her own research experiences with readers D. attract fellow scientists to attend the improvisation class 7. What can be inferred about scientists from the last paragraph? A. They should attend the improvisation class. B. They should question all preconceived ideas. C. They should carry on research by admitting earlier data. D. They should try to improve their academic knowledge. 4. D 5. D 6. B 7. However, I knew I wanted to work as a science communicator after finishing my Ph.D., so it seemed like a perfect chance to learn how to speak and communicate with others effectively. I signed up, knowing the experience would give me help.”(作为一个安静害羞的女孩,我害怕在陌生人面前即兴交流。 根据第三段关键句“The first few scenes were hard, but as weeks turned into months, I became more comfortable and even started to enjoy our classes. I became better at listening, relating to my conversation partners, and communicating clearly in the moment.”(最初的几个场景很难,但随着上了几个月课后,我变得更舒服了,甚至开始享受我们的课程。 根据倒数第二段关键句“Before attending the class, I would get stuck when my experiments produced unexpected data, thinking that I had made a mistake. But now, instead of getting discouraged, I will stay open to the possibility that the results are real, keep exploring the data and end up identifying a new type of cell—one that isn’t behaving as expected.”(在上课之前,当我实验产生意想不到的数据时,我会被卡住,觉得自己犯了一个错误。 根据最后一段关键句“If the data say rhinos are librarians, then it’s worth finding out whether rhinos are, in fact, librarians. As scientists, our job isn’t to challenge data that support, a preconceived story, but to say “yes, and.””(如果数据显示犀牛是图书管理员,那么就有必要了解犀牛是否是图书管理员。 C When you are stuck on a problem, sometimes it is best to stop thinking about it — consciously, anyway. Research has shown that taking a break or a nap can help the brain create pathways to a solution. Now a new study expands on the effect by using sound cues (提示) to focus the sleeping mind on a targeted problem. When humans sleep, parts of the brain replay certain memories, strengthening and transforming them. About a decade ago researchers developed a technique, called targeted memory reactivation (TMR), aimed at further reinforcing selected memories: when a sound becomes associated with a memory and is later played during sleep, that memory gets reactivated. In a study published last November in Psychological Science, scientists tested whether revisiting the memory of a puzzle during sleep might also improve problem-solving. About 60 participants visited the laboratory before and after a night of sleep. In an evening session, they attempted spatial, verbal and conceptual puzzles, with a distinct music clip repeating in the background for each, until they worked on six puzzles they could not solve. Overnight they wore electrodes to detect slow-wave sleep and a device played the sounds assigned to three of the six unsolved puzzles. The next day, back at the lab, the participants attempted the six puzzles again. All told, the subjects solved 32 percent of the sound-prompted puzzles versus 21 percent of the untargeted puzzles — a boost of more than 50 percent. The researchers “very bravely went for quite complex tasks that involved a lot of complex processing, and remarkably they found these really strong effects in all of their tasks,” says Penny Lewis, a psychologist at Cardiff University. “These are supercool results. Now we need to go out and try to understand them by firstly repeating the tasks and secondly trying to work out the component processes that are actually being influenced.” Beyond providing new evidence that humans restructure memories while sleeping, the research may have practical implications. “In a futuristic world, maybe TMR could help us use sleep to work on our problems,” says lead author Kristin Sanders, who was a graduate student at Northwestern University during the study. Sleep-monitoring technology is increasingly accessible — and even without gadgets (小装置), prospective solvers can focus on important problems before bed. Still, sleep is not magic; people need to do their homework and load their heads with the puzzle pieces involved. “I’m not going to solve cancer with this technique,” Sanders says, “because I don’t know anything about cancer research.” 8. What is the function of sound cues in the new study? A. To help the brain create pathways to a solution. B. To direct the sleeping mind towards specific problems. C. To monitor slow-wave sleep and detect reactivated memory. D. To provide background music for participants attempting puzzles. 9. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to? A. The complex tasks. B. The strong effects. C. The component processes. D. The expected results. 10. What can we know about the new study? A. Participants attempted the puzzles with targeted music clips on. B. Participants worked on six puzzles they couldn’t solve overnight. C. The electrodes detected sleep and played the sounds assigned to the puzzles. D. Subjects solved two more sound-prompted puzzles than untargeted puzzles. 11. What message does Sanders want to convey? A. Necessity is the mother of invention. B. Where there is a dream, there is a way. C. We can’t make a cake without ingredients. D. One will dream about what he thinks of. 8. B 9. B 10. A 11. And when we do try to think back to our earliest memories, it is often unclear whether they are the real thing or just recollections based on photos or stories told to us. The phenomenon, known as “childhood amnesia,” bas been puzzling psychologists for more than a century. It may seem that the reason we don’t remember being babies is that babies don’t have a fully developed memory. But babies as young as six months can form both short-term and long-term memories. In one study, six- month-olds who learned how to press a lever to operate a toy. Of course, memory capabilities at these ages are not adult-like — they continue to develop until adolescence. In fact, developmental changes in basic memory processes have been put forward as an explanation for childhood amnesia, and it’s one of the best theories we’ve got so far. These basic processes involve several brain regions and include forming, maintaining and later bringing back the memory. But this does not seem to be the whole story. Another factor that we know plays a role is language. From the ages of one to six, children progress from the one word stage of speaking to becoming fluent in their native language(s), so there are major changes in their language competence that overlap with the childhood amnesia period. It is true to some extent that a child’s ability to describe an event predicts how well they remember it months or years later. While there are still things we don’t understand about childhood amnesia, it’s important to remember that, even if we can’t clearly remember specific events from when we were very young, they still influence our behavior. The first few years of life are forgettable and yet powerful in shaping the adults that we become. 12. What does the study mentioned in paragraph 2 show? A. Babies don’t have a fully developed memory. B. Babies don’t suffer from childhood amnesia. C. Babies can remember things for weeks. D. Babies can benefit from hands - on learning. 13. Which of the following is one of the best theories concerning childhood amnesia? A. Babies’ brains are not mature enough. B. Babies’ language skills need developing. C. Babies cannot go through basic memory processes. D. Babies rarely experience events that had a big impact. 14. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Specific events from early childhood should be told to children. B. The first few years of life should be taken seriously. C. We can overcome childhood amnesia someday. D. Childhood amnesia is fairly common. 15. What can be the best title for the text? A. How our early childhood memories form B. How childhood amnesia influences our lives C. Why some memories disappear and others don’t D. Why we can’t remember our early childhood 【答案】12. C 13. C 14. B 15. 根据第二段“It may seem that the reason we don’t remember being babies is that babies don’t have a fully developed memory. But babies as young as six months can form both short-term and long-term memories. In one study, six- month-olds who learned how to press a lever to operate a toy.(我们不记得自己是婴儿的原因似乎是婴儿没有发育完全的记忆。 根据第三段“Of course, memory capabilities at these ages are not adult-like — they continue to develop until adolescence. In fact, developmental changes in basic memory processes have been put forward as an explanation for childhood amnesia, and it’s one of the best theories we’ve got so far.(当然,这些年龄段的记忆能力并不像成年人那样——它们会一直发展到青春期。 根据最后一段“While there are still things we don’t understand about childhood amnesia, it’s important to remember that, even if we can’t clearly remember specific events from when we were very young, they still influence our behavior. The first few years of life are forgettable and yet powerful in shaping the adults that we become.(虽然关于童年健忘症,我们仍有一些不了解的地方,但重要的是要记住,即使我们不能清楚地记住我们很小的时候发生的具体事件,它们仍然会影响我们的行为。 根据第一段“Most of us don’t have any memories from the first three to four year of our lives. And when we do try to think back to our earliest memories, it is often unclear whether they are the real thing or just recollections based on photos or stories told to us. The phenomenon, known as “childhood amnesia,” bas been puzzling psychologists for more than a century.(我们大多数人都没有生命最初三到四岁的记忆。 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) In modern life, stress has become an unwelcome companion for many. I had planned to fly to Vienna and take a bus to Prague for a conference. Due to a big storm, my flight had been delayed by an hour and a half. I touched down in Vienna just 30 minutes before the departure of the last bus to Prague. The moment I got off the plane, I ran like crazy through the airport building and jumped into the first taxi on the rank without a second thought. That was when I met Gunter. I told him where I was going, but he said he hadn't heard of the bus station. I thought my pronunciation was the problem, so I explained again more slowly, but he still looked confused. When I was about to give up, Gunter fished out his little phone and rang up a friend. After a heated discussion that lasted for what seemed like a century, Gunter put his phone down and started the car. Finally, with just two minutes to spare we rolled into the bus station. Thankfully, there was a long queue (队列) still waiting to board the bus. Gunter parked the taxi behind the bus, turned around, and looked at me with a big smile on his face. "We made it," he said. Just then I realised that I had zero cash in my wallet. I flashed him an apologetic smile as I pulled out my Portuguese bankcard. He tried it several times, but the card machine just did not play along. A feeling of helplessness washed over me as I saw the bus queue thinning out. At this moment, Gunter pointed towards the waiting hall of the bus station. There, at the entrance, was a cash machine. I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the machine, and popped my card in, only to read the message: "Out of order. Sorry." I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, I called Gunter as promised. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文 Para 1 I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news. He looked at me in disbelief, asking me what to do. Flashing him another apologetic smile, I begged him for a delayed payment. “If I miss this last bus to Prague, I’ll be late for the conference which is so important that I can’t afford to miss it!” I explained. “May I have your phone number? I will call you and return the money I owe you. I promise I will keep my word or you keep my watch!” I added, handing him my watch as well as my business card. Gunter accepted my business card but rejected my watch. He wrote down his phone number and gave it to me. “Just keep your promise, Sir.” A feeling of gratitude washed over me as I heard his words. Giving him a firm handshake, I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the bus, and jumped onto it just before its departure. Para 2 Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, I called Gunter as promised. He picked me up at the bus station where he had dropped me off four days before. Beaming a warm smile at him, I gave him a big hug the moment I saw him. We chatted happily on the way to the airport. I told him that thanks to his generosity and timely help, everything had gone smoothly. When he stopped his taxi outside the airport, I paid him for the “double car ride”, back and forth from the airport to the bus station, together with a generous tip that he turned down. I also gave him an attractive souvenir I had bought at Prague, which he accepted with delight. We became good friends and kept in touch with each other regularly. I felt blessed to have such a warm-hearted friend like Gunter. 词汇激活 行为类 ①拒绝:reject/refuse ②给某人拥抱:give sb. a hug/embrace sb. ③记下,写下:write down/set down 情绪类 ①难以置信地:in disbelief/incredibly/unbelievably ②开心地:happily/joyfully 【点睛】【高分句型1】He picked me up at the bus station where he had dropped me off four days before.(运用了where引导的限制性定语从句) 【高分句型2】When he stopped his taxi outside the airport, I paid him for the “double car ride”, back and forth from the airport to the bus station, together with a generous tip that he turned down.(运用了when引导的时间状语从句,that引导的限制性定语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 成都市盐道街中学2024-2025学年上期10月月考 高2023级英语科试题 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 1. B Learning to say “yes, and” When I first heard about the improvisation (即兴交流) class, I was hesitating. As a quiet and shy girl, I feared improvising in front of strangers. However, I knew I wanted to work as a science communicator after finishing my Ph.D., so it seemed like a perfect chance to learn how to speak and communicate with others effectively. I signed up, knowing the experience would give me help. During our first class we learned an important concept of improvisation: “yes, and.” It means that, as improvisers, we’d better accept what fellow performers say. A. explain the process of using the method B prove the benefits of the improvisation class C. share her own research experiences with readers D. attract fellow scientists to attend the improvisation class 7. What can be inferred about scientists from the last paragraph? A. They should attend the improvisation class. B. They should question all preconceived ideas. C. They should carry on research by admitting earlier data. D. They should try to improve their academic knowledge. C When you are stuck on a problem, sometimes it is best to stop thinking about it — consciously, anyway. A The complex tasks. B. The strong effects. C. The component processes. D. The expected results. 10. What can we know about the new study? A. Participants attempted the puzzles with targeted music clips on. B Participants worked on six puzzles they couldn’t solve overnight. D Most of us don’t have any memories from the first three to four year of our lives. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
