My father learned to play tennis in Washington, D.C. The game had not been an option in the little Missouri village where he grew up, though he did make efforts to bring the sport to his hometown. As he told the story, soon after he learned the game, he and a friend setup a net and painted lines on an area of relatively flat cow pasture (牧场).
My father played tennis at least once a week for about 55 years. Humor was part of every match. When an opponent (对手) at the net left the alley open for him to hit one down the line, he would say something about “no forwarding address.” When he was cleanly passed, he would blame himself. “Give me a couple of days and I’d get to that one,” he’d say, or “If I was any slower you would have to paint me.”
My father taught my brother and me tennis. We all loved to play, to some degree because it was a way to be close to him. The most common conversational topic among the men in our family was the best way to hit a shot at the net, which often led to disagreements. The people he felt closest to, those who sat around our kitchen table on weekends making each other laugh, were the men he played tennis with. Maybe he felt you could always be yourself with someone who knew that much about you.
My father always told me that one attraction of tennis was that you could play all your life. In his case, it turned out to be close to true. He was 79 when he finally gave it up. He had fallen a couple of times because of numb (迟钝的) feet. His condition took a nosedive as soon as he stopped playing. Within a year he had to use a walker, and then he couldn’t drive, and then he hardly went out at all.
When he died not long ago, a couple of his lifelong tennis friends, still playing at 88 and 90, made it to the funeral. One spoke about how much fun Dad was to be around.
24. Why did the author’s father set up a tennis court in his village?
A. To attract tourists. B. To publicize tennis.
C To better his playing skills. D. To train young tennis lovers.
25. How does the author illustrate his father’s humor in tennis?
A. By giving examples. B. By making comparisons.
C. By listing his opponents’ comments. D. By describing a tennis match in detail.
26. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. Tennis made the author know his father better.
B. Tennis was a popular conversational topic.
C. Tennis brought the author’s family closer.
D. Tennis was a way to express oneself.
27. Which of the following can replace the underlined part “took a nosedive” in paragraph 4?
A. Exhibited signs of recovery. B. Saw a sharp drop.
C. Normalized. D. Continued.

Researchers in Australia and the US are starting a multi-million dollar project to bring the Tasmanian tiger, nicknamed thylacine(袋狼), back from extinction. The last known one died in 1939.
The team say it can be recreated using stem cells(干细胞)and gene-editing(基因编辑)technology, and the first thylacine could be reintroduced to the wild in 10 years’ time. They plan to take stem cells from a living species with similar DNA, and then use gene-editing technology to ”bring back“ the extinct species - or an extremely close one of it.
It would be a great achievement for the researchers attempting it, and require a number of scientific breakthroughs.
The population of Tasmanian tigers dropped when humans arrived in Australia tens of thousands of years ago, and again when dingoes - a species of wild dog - appeared.Eventually, the species only lived free on the island of Tasmania, and was finally hunted to extinction.
If scientists were to succeed it would mark the first “de-extinction“ event in history, but many outside experts doubt it, and believe that the project is more about media attention for the scientists and less about doing serious science.
The idea of bringing back the extinct has been around for more than 20 years. In 1999, the Australian Museum started to pursue a project to clone the Tasmanian tiger, and various attempts have been made ever since to get or rebuild DNA from samples. The US firm made headlines last year with its plans to use similar gene editing technology to bring the woolly mammoth back to life - a technological achievement yet to be made.
28. Which of the following might be the major reason for thylacine’s extinction?
A. Habitat loss. B. Climate change.
C. Human activities. D. Wild dog protection.
29. What do many outside experts think of bringing back extinct thylacine?
A It will make history.
B. It is particularly difficult.
C. It deserves greater attention.
D. It is more of a piece of eye-catching news.
30. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Future for bringing back the extinct.
B. Benefits of bringing back the extinct.
C. Previous efforts to bring back the extinct.
D. Technology needed to bring back the extinct.
31. In which column of a magazine can we read this passage?
A. Science and Technology. B. History and Traditions.

When Alex Lin was 11 years old, he came across an alarming article in the newspaper highlighting the improper handling of e-waste, such as burying outdated computers in backyards and throwing cell phones in the garbage. This is dangerous as e-waste contains poisonous chemicals and substances that can leak into the environment, getting into crops, animals, water supplies, and even humans.
“I was deeply concerned,” recalls Alex. He immediately conducted a survey to assess the situation in his town. The results were astonishing: Among the respondents, only one in eight even knew what e-waste was, let alone how to properly dispose of it.
Determined to make a difference, Alex immediately set up a project under WIN, the organization he had established with his friends two years prior to address, community issues. The WIN team publicized their efforts in the local newspaper and distributed notices to students. urging residents to bring their unwanted electronics to the school parking lot. They successfully collected over 21,000 pounds of e-waste, including outdated computers from the school system. Following this, they established a permanent e-waste drop-off center.
Recognizing the importance of reuse, which is seven times more efficient than recycling, Alex and his team began exploring ways to returnish (翻新) the old computers. He persuaded his school to integrate computer refurbishment into the curriculum, enabling students to collect, restore, and distribute 260 computers to children in need.
Realizing that a drop-off center alone was not a sustainable solution, Alex took his efforts to the state level in 2006. He spoke at the state house, advocating for a new e-waste bill that would outlaw the dumping (倾倒) of e-waste. Along with other supporters, he engaged with lawmakers, presented slideshows, and gathered over 370 signatures. Ultimately, the bill was passed into law.
Thanks to the efforts of individuals. like Alex and his team, the message of safe e-waste disposal is gradually gaining attention. As Alex states, “Today’s technology should not become tomorrow’s poison.”
32. What was the issue that concerned Alex?
A. High investment of e-waste recycling.
B. Pollution from burying old computers.
C. Unsafe management of electronic waste.
D. Wasted stuff in thrown-away electronics.
33. What words can best summarize Alex and his team?
A. Generous yet inefficient. B. Innovative and committed.
C. Passionate yet undisciplined. D. Conventional and cautious.
34. Why did Alex and his team explore ways to refurbish old computers?
A. To reuse the computers. B. To offer his school a course.
C. To recycle the computers. D. To improve study efficiency.
35. What is the main message conveyed in the last sentence of the passage?
A. Future e-products need to be eco-friendlier.
B. Individuals can drive great change on e-waste.

I didn’t like Del so much. He always called me the nickname “Germy”, which meant “dirty”, instead of my real name “Jamie”. Besides, he was known as a trouble-maker in school. So when the head teacher Mr. Smith asked Del to come to his office, I naturally thought that Del had done something mean to someone. Through the window, I caught sight of a smaller boy crying. Del seemed unhappy, too.
He did not return to class that day. All of us were discussing what had happened to him. What else could such an annoying boy do? “He must have hit the boy and was sent home,” I whispered to my friends. Their eyes widened. It felt good to see them so interested in what I said.
The next morning, the whole school was talking about Del being expelled(开除) for beating up a kid. I was surprised that my assumptions were passed on so quickly. So when Del walked into the classroom, all the kids were shocked. The kids next to him shift ed their desks away. “What’s your problem?” Del asked. “I don’t want you to attack me,” one kid said. Some laughed. “Yeah, I might,” said Del. I could tell he was joking, but many kids thought he admitted he did beat up someone.
During recess(课间休息), Del tried to join the kickball game. “Neither team wants you,” one of the players said. “Why?” Del asked, looking confused. “I always play with you guys.” They ignored him and went on playing. Del sat by himself while the rest of the school enjoyed their recess away from him. Del looked lonely and sad, much different from before. I started to feel sorry for him.
Later that day, I learned what really happened. The kid was Del’s little brother and he was crying because their mother fell ill and was sent to hospital. I felt even sorrier for what I said before. I started a rumor(谣言).
注意:
At recess the next day, I saw Del sitting alone watching the kickball game.

M: Certainly. And after that…
W: They seemed impressed, and offered me a position as a junior local news reporter the next year. I ended up staying two years there actually. I was in charge of the sports news section of the newspaper.
M: I see. But you decided to leave them in 2019, right?
W: Yes, that’s right. My husband and I moved to London, and so I managed to find a position with a national newspaper based in London.
M: Is it the London Weekly?
W: Exactly. In some ways it was a step down from my previous job, but it did offer me much better prospects for the future.

Welcome to Inhotim. Now I’ll give an introduction to it, first. From a distance, Inhotim looks like a typical Brazilian countryside, but as you get closer, you notice something a bit unusual. There are tourists walking through the fields and gardens! This beautiful place started as a farm and for many years only farmers lived here. But that all changed in the 1990s when billionaire Bernardo Paz decided to use the space for something very different. He created a “Disneyland” for art lovers! Today, people travel from around the world and look at the art. The spaces of Inhotim include more than 500 sculptures by Brazilian and international artists. As well as being important culturally, it is really important for the local area because Inhotim creates a lot of jobs-1,000 people work here in the museum, gardens and restaurants. Although it is quite far from the usual tourist spots of Brazil, it is now a very successful and popular outdoor museum.

C. To better his playing skills.
C. Normalized. D. Continued.
B 25. A 26. C 27. B

根据文章第一段“The game had not been an option in the little Missouri village where he grew up, though he did make efforts to bring the sport to his hometown.(在他长大的密苏里小村庄里,网球并不是一个选择,尽管他为把这项运动带到家乡做出了努力)”可知,作者父亲建造网球场是为了让村子里的人了解和参加这项运动。
根据文章第二段“Humor was part of every match. When an opponent at the net left the alley open for him to hit one down the line, he would say something about “no forwarding address.” When he was cleanly passed, he would blame himself. “Give me a couple of days and I’d get to that one,” he’d say, or “If I was any slower you would have to paint me.(幽默是每一场比赛的一部分。当网边的对手给他留下了击球的空位时,他会说一些“没有转接地址”之类的话。当球干净利落地经过他时,他会责怪自己。“给我几天时间,我就能接到它,”他会说,或者“如果我再慢一点,你就得画我了。”)”可知,第二段描述了爸爸的幽默发生的几个场合。由此推知,作者用具体举例的方式来说明父亲在网球运动中的幽默感。故选A。
根据文章第三段“My father taught my brother and me tennis. Maybe he felt you could always be yourself with someone who knew that much about you.(我父亲教我和我哥哥打网球。
划线词前文“He was 79 when he finally gave it up. He had fallen a couple of times because of numb feet. (他最终放弃的时候已经79岁了。因为脚麻,他摔倒了好几次)”提到,父亲在打球时摔了几次,之后不再打网球;划线部分后“Within a year he had to use a walker, and then he couldn’t drive, and then he hardly went out at all.(不到一年,他不得不使用助行器,然后他不能开车,然后他几乎不出门)”提到父亲身体状况急剧恶化,因此,当父亲不再打球后,身体情况急剧恶化。

If scientists were to succeed, it would mark the first “de-extinction“ event in history, but many outside experts doubt it, and believe that the project is more about media attention for the scientists and less about doing serious science.
A. It will make history.
C. Nature and Environment. D. Culture and Society.
C 29. D 30. C 31. A

Eventually, the species only lived free on the island of Tasmania, and was finally hunted to extinction.
根据倒是第二段“If scientists were to succeed, it would mark the first “de-extinction“ event in history, but many outside experts doubt it, and believe that the project is more about media attention for the scientists and less about doing serious science.( 如果科学家们成功了,这将标志着历史上第一次“灭绝动物复活”事件,但许多外部专家对此表示怀疑,并认为该项目更多地是媒体对科学家的关注,而不是做严肃的科学研究。)”可知,许多外部科学家认为恢复灭绝的袋狼更像是一条引人注目的新闻,故选D。
【30题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段的“The idea of bringing back the extinct has been around for more than 20 years. In 1999, the Australian Museum started to pursue a project to clone the Tasmanian tiger, and various attempts have been made ever since to get or rebuild DNA from samples. The US firm made headlines last year with its plans to use similar gene editing technology to bring the woolly mammoth back to life - a technological achievement yet to be made.(复活灭绝物种的想法已经存在了20多年。
根据第一段的“Researchers in Australia and the US are starting a multi-million dollar project to bring the Tasmanian tiger, nicknamed thylacine(袋狼), back from extinction.
A To reuse the computers. B. To offer his school a course.
C. To recycle the computers. D. To improve study efficiency.
35. What is the main message conveyed in the last sentence of the passage?
A. Future e-products need to be eco-friendlier.
B. Individuals can drive great change on e-waste.
C. E-waste is a pressing concern for now and later.
D. Old electronic items should be treated properly.

Should We Help Strangers?
Recently our class had a heated discussion about whether we should help strangers. Opinions are divided on this issue.
Some people are in favor of it, saying that helping others is a traditional virtue, which can bring love and warmth to the people in need. Additionally, helping others means helping us, because everyone needs help. However, others have the opposite opinion. They argue that helping others can sometimes bring us trouble. What’s worse, we may be misunderstood by some people.
Personally, we should try our best to help others when they are in need of help, but first we should avoid getting into trouble.

Now that Del had forgiven me, I decided to do more before the recess was over.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
At recess the next day, I saw Del sitting alone watching the kickball game. Not wanting him to feel left out, I walked over and sat down beside him. “Hey Germy,” he said. “My name is Jamie.” I replied. I wanted to apologize for starting that rumor about him, but I was too ashamed to say it out loudly. “Del, do you want to play kickball with us?” I asked instead. He looked surprised but happy at the same time. After a moment of silence, he nodded his head.
Now that Del had forgiven me, I decided to do more before the recess was over. I stood up and shouted to the other kids, “Guys, come here! Let’s play kickball together! ” Some of them hesitated, but they eventually joined us. Del was smiling again and so were we. As we played, I realized that Del wasn’t as bad as I thought he was. He was just a normal kid who wanted to have fun and be accepted by others. From then on, whenever someone tried to start a rumor about him, I would stand up for him and tell them the truth about Del. We became good friends, and I learned an important lesson about judging people based on rumors.
