“Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you’ll look back and realize they were the big things.” This has stuck with me since the first time I read it. And it just makes so much sense.
Just the other day I caught a cold. The flu really made me mad and made me feel so weak and just sleepy. You all know how flu can be driving. I woke up with a weak body. How I wished it was a weekend already but it was Monday and I had to go to work. I dragged myself out of bed and made it to work. We have a care taker at work. We call her dada Lucy, who usually prepares some nice lunch for us. She noticed I was not okay and she was sorry for me.
As I was on my desk, dada Lucy came with some cough syrup (糖浆) to ease my throat. I was so moved by her kind gesture and thoughtfulness. The thought of all this just got straight to my heart. I felt so good, I felt loved, I felt visible and it was a huge relief.
And I believe it’s the collection of these small kind gestures, and these little things as we may call them that make life worth living. It’s days like these that remind us of the power of the little things that most of the time go unnoticed. It’s these days remind us that there are still good and kind people out there who always find ways to brighten up others, to lift them up and put a smile on their faces. And I believe we all can be like that. I believe every human being has that soft side to share with the world.

The Earth has just been sent a message from space. Now people around the world are trying to figure out what the message says. But the message wasn’t from aliens — intelligent creatures from other parts of the universe. Instead, it’s part of a project designed to see how humans might react if we did get a message from aliens.
The idea that there might be aliens is popular in books and movies. But so far, there’s been no known sign that they exist. Still, many scientists believe the universe is large enough that it’s likely that other intelligent creatures could exist somewhere.
A number of scientists are trying to find vestiges of such creatures. The most well-known group is called SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence). One of the big questions about such creatures is, if they existed, would we be able to communicate with them? Daniela de Paulis is an artist who’s working with scientists at SETI. She wondered what would happen if the Earth actually received a message from space, How would people react? Would people be able to work together to figure out what the message said?
Daniela de Paulis came up with a project designed to test how humans reacted to getting such a message. She calls the project A Sign in Space. She worked with a group of scientists at SETI to come up with a secret message. Last Wednesday, the European Space Agency’s ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter spacecraft sent the coded message back to Earth from Mars. The signal was picked up by several radio telescopes around the world.
The data (the information from the message) has now been put on the Internet. Anyone can download it and try to figure out what it means. A special website has been set up for people to report their ideas about the message, and discuss any progress they make in trying to translate it.

First aid is crucial in emergency situations as it provides immediate care and assistance to individuals who have been injured or are in trouble.
The basic objective of first aid is its life-saving potential. Emergencies often unfold unexpectedly and can quickly become deadly without immediate action. First aid serves as that critical initial response, providing care vital for the survival of a victim (患者) of injury or illness. Before professional medical help arrives, first aid can maintain extremely important bodily functions and prevent the situation from worsening during this critical period.
First aid isn’t just about dealing with life-threatening situations but is also crucial in managing non-life-threatening conditions that may cause serious pain or discomfort. This can involve many injuries, from small cuts to burns. A trained first aider has the skills to provide immediate care for these conditions, relieving pain and making the victim more comfortable until professional help is available or necessary.
One of the critical aspects of first aid is the prevention of further injury or illness. When a medical emergency occurs, the situation or environment might pose additional risks to the victim, A trained first aider knows how to manage these situations to protect the individual from further harm. For example, in the case of a car accident, they might need to move the injured person away from the wreckage (残骸) if there’s a risk of explosion or fire.
The promptness (敏捷) and efficiency of first aid can directly influence the speed and efficacy of the recovery process. By providing immediate care, first aid can reduce the severity of an injury or illness, promoting quicker recovery. For example, when properly cleaned and dressed immediately after an injury, a wound is less likely to get infected, ensuring a quicker healing process. This also minimizes the risk of future damage like tissue damage.
12. What does the author imply in paragraph 2?
A. All emergencies are a great threat to people’s life.
B. First aid takes the place of professional medical help.
C. First aid makes a big difference between life and death.
D. An experienced first aider can predict most emergencies.
13. What should trained first aiders do with non-life-threatening conditions?
A. Give the victims some painkillers. B. Prevent the victims from moving around.
C. Send the victims to the hospital right away. D. Offer basic care and comfort to the victims.
14. Why does the author mention a car accident in paragraph 4?
A. To stress the critical role of first aid. B. To show the danger of car accidents.
C. To tell the reasons for further injuries. D. To explain people’s actions in accidents.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A Methods of promoting a quicker recovery. B. Ways of cleaning and dressing the wound.
C. The importance of quick and effective first aid. D. The key to reduce the risk of future damage.

“We have big news for you, honey,” Dad said, closing the refrigerator door. He shared a look with Mom and said, “We’re moving to Kenya for three months! Isn’t that exciting?”
“We are going to do what?” I asked, choking on the apple piece. Dad had to pat me on my back to make sure I didn’t choke.
“Yes! Going to Kenya!” Mom said. “I will volunteer to help out the poor children and teach them to read, and Dad is going to work in Nairobi, and you, young lady,” she managed to spare one hand out of the busy kitchen to pat my shoulder, “are going to help me be a teacher. Won’t this be challenging and fun?”
“Fun?” I shouted, “You think this would be fun? It will be three whole months living on the middle of nowhere with all that wildlife. Can’t you even imagine the conditions there?”
They both stopped and looked at me, I kept on shouting. “Hey, honey, come over here,” Mom pulled out her phone to show me some pictures. “Those poor children are all at your age. How can I stand by when I see them suffering like this?”
I was shocked when I saw those photos of the children. They looked sad, tired and hungry. Their clothes were not in good condition. They needed our help. I began to hesitate.
“They look so small!” I gasped. “Are you sure they are not two years younger than me?”
“No. They are all kids, just like you. They should have had a nice and comfortable childhood, just like you. But instead they don’t always have the chance to eat a good meal, let alone the chance to learn to read and write.”

But so far there’s been no known sign that they exist.
8. What is the purpose of designing a message from space?
A. To know how people respond. B. To let us know aliens’ lifestyle.
C. To tell we haven’t found aliens. D. To deny the existence of aliens.
9. What does the author imply about the presence of aliens?
A. It makes people worried. B. It needs further evidences.
C. It is an incorrect imagination. D. It brings confusions to space study.
10. What does the underlined word “vestiges” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Signs. B. Groups. C. Homes. D. Records.

A. Methods of promoting a quicker recovery.

I turned to Mom and Dad, and made my choice, “I want to help them.” Two weeks later, we were standing in front of the Nairobi International Airport.

【答案】
About three hours later, we arrived where Mom would work. The scene was nothing like I had imagined. A small wooden schoolhouse stood in the middle of a dirt field, surrounded by a few small huts. The children were gathered outside, eagerly waiting for us. They were dressed in simple clothes, but their faces shone with excitement and hope. Mom introduced me to them, and they all greeted me warmly. I felt a little nervous but also excited. I knew that I had made the right choice. We spent the afternoon setting up the classroom and getting ready for the first day of school. I helped Mom organize the books and supplies, and we talked about the plans for the upcoming weeks.
Quickly, three months had passed before I realized it. The time had flown by, filled with laughter, learning, and unforgettable memories. The children had become like my own siblings, and I had grown to love them deeply. We had shared stories, played games, and learned so much from each other. I had taught them to read and write, and they had taught me about their culture and way of life. As we prepared to leave, I felt a mix of sadness and gratitude. I knew that this experience had changed me forever, and I would always carry the memories of these wonderful children in my heart.
