②About 5,500 years ago, the Egyptians invented the sun clock. This was a tall stone building. Its shadow (影子) showed the movement of the sun. So people could know midday. On cloudy days or at night, it was impossible to tell the time with a sun clock. Water clocks were the first clocks not to use the sun. The idea is simple. Water flows (流动) from one bottle to another. When the water reaches a certain level, it shows the hours. But they failed to make people know the exact time.
③In the 13th century, the mechanical clock was invented. This was more exact, but it was expensive to make one. In 1927, the first quartz (石英) clock was developed. Clocks became cheaper to build. It’s also cheaper for ordinary people to own a clock. More recently, in 1956, came the digital clock. Nowadays, satellites can send our mobile phones the time to the exact second.
④There has been a lot of progress in timekeeping. Clocks are always changing but some things never change. Many of us still have trouble getting out of bed and not being late for school or work.

(23-24八年级上·广东深圳·期中)Almost all animals need to sleep to stay healthy. But sleeping can also be dangerous because other animals may hurt those who are sleeping. This leads to many different ways of sleeping that help them stay safe. Some of these ways may surprise you!
Almost all bats sleep upside down. They hang from a branch of a tree or the ceiling of a cave. Up high, bats are safe from most other animals. If they are in danger, they just fly away.
A dolphin sleeps with just half its brain at a time. It must stay awake to breathe and to watch for danger. Dolphin mothers and babies can go without sleep for as long as two months to stay safe.
Some ducks sleep with just half their brains, too. These ducks often sleep in a line. The ducks at both ends help to keep the group safe. They keep one eye open to watch for danger. The ducks in the middle sleep deeply with both eyes closed.
Seals breathe air, but that doesn’t stop some of them from sleeping underwater. They hold their breath and dive deep to sleep for up to twenty minutes at a time. Sleeping deep underwater helps these seals stay safe from animals that hunt them near the surface.
Horses often sleep standing up. Their legs lock in place so they don’t fall over. If a horse is lying down, it needs a long time to get up. A horse can run from danger more quickly if it is already standing.
Some seabirds can sleep while they fly. These large birds spend most of their lives over the ocean. They are in danger on the water, but they are safe in the air. They fly for many hours without flapping(拍打)their wings. Sometimes they sleep while they are flying.

(23-24八年级上·广东深圳·期中)Gentoo penguins are fast. They are the fastest swimming birds in the world. Now, scientists think they know how they do it. The birds’ trick is called “feathering.” It changes the angle of their wings while swimming. That helps them achieve faster speed.
Bo Yin is a scientist. He works at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. He and other scientists watched videos of the birds. They also made computer models of penguin wings in motion (动作). Then, they looked at the models. They saw the effect of feathering.
How does feathering work? A penguin raises the bottoms of its wings. It moves them forward or back. That changes the wings’ angle to the water and also reduces the water resistance against a penguin’s wings. That means less water pushes against the wings. This lets the penguin move ahead faster.
How often a Gentoo flaps (拍打) its wings also plays an important role. Flapping many times per second helps the bird move forward. But it uses more energy. So, it’s not really the best way to gain speed. Yin and his team found the most efficient way for penguins is to tilt their wings back 18 degrees and flap about once per second.
H. Tanaka, an engineer, has studied penguin movement. A computer model can capture many key details of penguin wings, he says. But still, it isn’t 100 percent true. “This model was still simpler than the real penguin,” Tanaka says.

(23-24八年级上·广东深圳·期中)Do you have a lucky number? Many people have a special number and they hope that it will bring them good luck. In China, people think that, some numbers are lucky or unlucky because those numbers sound similar to some Chinese words that mean something good or bad.
For example, the word for number 8 sounds like “making lots of money” in Chinese. So, people think it a very lucky number. Some people will even spend much more money to have 8s in their phone numbers. Do you remember the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing? It opened at 8: 08 p. m. on August 8, 2008.
The number 9 is also a lucky number because of its connection to the emperors of China. There were nine dragons on emperors’ robes (龙袍) and it’s told in many Chinese ancient stories that the dragon has nine children. The number of 9 also means “long lasting”. So what’s an unlucky number in China? It might be 4. Many Chinese people see 4 as an unlucky number because it sounds similar to the Chinese word “death”. Because of this, many buildings don’t have the fourth floor, and just call it the fifth floor. In Hong Kong, some buildings even skip all floors with the numbered 4, such as 4, 14, 24, 34 and all 40-49 floors. So, a building whose highest floor is 50 may have only 36 floors actually.

②There were cockroaches on the earth long ago, and many people believe that they will still be here long after all the people leave it. Cockroaches are small in size, and they are good at climbing and jumping. A cockroach can live for about a week even without a head. These make them great helpers during the search and rescue missions (搜救任务).
③Alper heads up a scientist team at North Carolina Stage University. “I joined the search and rescue missions in Turkey in 1999,” he said. “one of the most difficult problems was to find where the living people were. We needed to find them in a short time, but there was no useful way to help us at that time.” So Alper and his team had the idea of turning cockroaches into special robots.
④Scientists put a small sensor (传感器) and a smart camera (相机) on a cockroach’s back. Cockroaches climb everywhere with them, cockroaches can tell people from other things, and then find where the missing people are. In this way, more people can be saved in time.

(23-24八年级上·广东深圳·期中)Do you know your mobile phone number well? You may sometimes find it hard to remember your number. That’s because China has the longest mobile phone numbers in the world. Why is that?
The 11 digits (数字) include three parts. Each part has a different meaning. The first three numbers tell you the mobile phone service provider (服务提供商) you are using. For example, 135 is for the China Mobile Communication Corporation (中国移动) and 188 is for China Unicorn (中国联通). The fourth to the seventh digits tell you where the number is from. And the last four digits are random (随机的).
The main reason for using 11 digits is that we have the largest population (人口) in the world. We once had 10 numbers. But as our population grew, there were not enough numbers for us to use. So we began to use 11 digits from 1999.
11 digits can make tens of billions of mobile phone numbers. That’s enough for each person to have seven or eight phone numbers to use in China. Also, we can reuse the mobile phone numbers. Usually, the service provider will use a canceled number again after three to six months. If you call a number that you haven’t called for a long time, you may find its owner has changed.
Besides China, Britain and Japan also use 11-digit mobile phone numbers. But their numbers always start with 0. So they cannot make as many numbers as we can. Countries like the United States, Australia and India use phone numbers with 10 digits. Canada’s mobile phone numbers are perhaps the world’s shortest: they use seven digits.
1.What can we learn from the mobile phone number 188-4792-8343?
A.The service provider is the China Mobile Communication Corporation.
B.The digits 4792 tell you the area the mobile phone number is from.
C.There are ten digits in the mobile phone number.
D.The digits 8343 tell you the number of service providers in China.
2.Why do we use 11-digit mobile phone numbers in China?
A.There are many people in China.
B.People in China can remember numbers well.
C.11 is a lucky number for Chinese people.
D.It helps people to remember more phone numbers.
3.What does the underlined word “canceled” mean?
A.out of time B.out of use
C.out of sight D.out of breath
4.Which of the following can make the most mobile phone numbers?
A.10 digits starting with 1 B.11 digits starting with 0
C.11 digits starting with 1 D.10 digits starting with 0
5.Which countries use phone numbers with 10 digits?
A.Britain and Japan. B.Britain and China.
C.Canada and Australia. D.India and Australia.
(23-24八年级上·广东深圳·期中)Last fall, I went to New York for sightseeing. I visited many tourist attractions there, and I also saw many unfortunate citizens on the street like beggars and homeless people.
Standing outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I heard a voice ask, “Can you do me a favor?” When I turned around, I saw an elderly blind woman extending out her hand. Naturally, I reached into my pocket for some change immediately and placed it in her hand without even looking at her. I was really annoyed at being bothered by a beggar. What I only thought at that moment was to send her away.
But the blind woman said with a warm smile on her face, “I don’t want your money. I just need you to show me the way to the subway entrance.”
Suddenly, I realized what I had done. Her unexpected words took me by surprise and shame. I had acted with prejudice (偏见). I felt ashamed of myself and couldn’t face the old woman anymore. And I felt small beside her.
This reminded me that I believed in being humble (谦逊的), even though I had lost that belief for a moment. The thing I had forgotten about myself is that I am an immigrant. I left Honduras and arrived n the U.S. at an early age. Through the years, I have experienced many acts of prejudice. I remember a time when I was a busboy, I heard a father tell his little boy that if he did not do well in school, he would end up like me. But now, living my American middle-class lifestyle, it is too easy to forget who I am and where I have been, and to lose sight of where I want to go. It is the blind woman who cured me of my blindness.

(23-24八年级上·广东深圳·期中)When night falls, trunks (后备箱) of private cars are turned into special mobile stalls (摊位) on the street. They sell everything from drinks to clothes at good prices. Lots of customers would like to buy something each time they pass by. This is the trunk market which has become popular in many cities recently.
Those who sell things at the stalls are mostly young people. Many young stallholders say they set up the stalls out of interest. They think they might be able to make some money after work. And they find the lively market brings them a special feeling of satisfaction. “Every time I work at my stall, I get to talk with nice passers-by. It feels great to meet new friends,” said a stallholder. “I really enjoy hearing people tell me how good my coffee is,” another stallholder said.
But young people can’t expect to make a lot of money from the business because the number would fluctuate. For example, a coffee stall may sell 60 cups of coffee on a good day, but less than 10 cups on another day. And when the weather is bad, the stallholder can’t even go out to the market.
While enjoying the fun of buying things at the trunk market, some people also worry about its development. As the food sold there is mostly fast food, no one knows for sure whether it is safe. Christian is an ornithologist (鸟类学家) and works for a project to help a group of endangered geese fly from Norway to France in a light aircraft (飞行器). Thomas decided to join his father to help him with the task.
To guide the geese to France, Thomas had to use a skill called imprinting. This is about letting the geese live with humans from a young age, so they learn to recognize them as their leaders.
Thomas spent a lot of time with the geese, talking to them, and even sleeping in the same room as them. This helped the geese build close connection with him and see him as their leader.
Once the geese were comfortable with Thomas, they were ready to make their first flight with their leader—Thomas. He carefully put the geese into the plane. As they took off, the geese became uneasy and started to flap their wings, which could make the aircraft unstable. To solve this problem, Thomas used his knowledge of birds to create a peaceful environment for the geese.
As they flew across the ocean, the team met unexpected weather conditions, including strong winds and turbulence (湍流). Thomas remained calm, using his knowledge of birds to guess their reactions (反应) in advance and ensured the geese remain calm and safe.

(23-24八年级上·广东深圳·期中)①How do we know the time? A clock, a watch or a mobile phone can help us. However, many years ago, there were no clocks and knowing the time was not so easy. Over the centuries, people have developed different ways of telling the time.

1.What is the Gentoo penguin known for?
A.Being the largest penguin species.
B.Being the smallest penguin species.
C.Being the best diver among penguins.
D.Being the fastest swimming bird in the world.
2.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The meaning of feathering. B.The ways feathering work.
C.The study about feathering. D.The importance of feathering.
3.What does “gain” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.develop B.reduce C.stop D.change
4.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.In the future, more detailed work is needed.
B.The wing model was as flat as the real penguin.
C.The study failed to capture the movement of the bird.
D.The model failed to get the details of penguin wings.
5.Where can you find this article?
A.A science fiction. B.A science magazine.
C.A story book. D.An encyclopedia.

In China, a man would send 99 or 999 roses to his lover with the wishes that the love between them will be long lasting.
What’s more, Chinese think that the number 2 is lucky as it’s said that “all good things come in pairs”. For example, during wedding celebrations, you usually find pairs of red candles, double pillows and many other things in pairs and people often give gifts in pairs for someone’s birthday, wedding or other celebrations.

【答案】1.B 2.A 3.B 4.C 5.D
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了中国手机号码是11位的原因,并介绍了其他国家的手机号码数字。
1.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“For example, 135 is for the China Mobile Communication Corporation (中国移动) and 188 is for China Unicorn (中国联通). The fourth to the seventh digits tell you where the number is from. And the last four digits are random (随机的).”可知,135是中国移动通信公司,188是中国联通,第四位数到第七位数告诉你这个号码来自哪里,最后四位数字是随机的。故选B。
2.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The main reason for using 11 digits is that we have the largest population (人口) in the world.”可知,使用11位数字的主要原因是我们拥有世界上最多的人口。故选A。
3.词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段中的“If you call a number that you haven’t called for a long time, you may find its owner has changed.”可知,如果你拨打了一个很久没有拨打的号码,你可能会发现它的主人已经改变了,所以划线部分的含义是“取消了的”。故选B。
4.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“11 digits can make tens of billions of mobile phone numbers.”以及最后一段中的“Besides China, Britain and Japan also use 11-digit mobile phone numbers. But their numbers always start with 0. So they cannot make as many numbers as we can.”
根据最后一段中的“Countries like the United States, Australia and India use phone numbers with 10 digits.”可知,美国、澳大利亚和印度的电话号码是10个数字。故选D。
1.What did the author think the blind woman wanted at first sight?
A.To ask for directions. B.To offer him some help.

A.Because he couldn’t face the woman.
B.Because he was an immigrant himself.
C.Because he had prejudice on the woman.
D.Because he didn’t judge the woman by her appearance.
3.Why did the author mention his experience as a busboy?
A.To show he was a poor boy. B.To tell he didn’t work hard at school.
C.To prove he used to be a humble man. D.To show he used to be judged unequally.
4.What does the underlined sentence mean?
A.The woman helped the author get eyesight back.
B.The woman taught the author some professional knowledge.
C.The woman made the author realize the importance of being humble.
D.The woman enabled the author to live an American middle-class lifestyle.
5.Which is the best title for the text?
