And only seven hours left of a 19- hour flight before I would arrive in South Africa for my third volunteer trip in three years. But this time it was different. I’d be there alone for a whole year, without friends or family. Plus, I had one challenge other volunteers fighting AIDS in Africa didn’t have — I was in a wheelchair. At eight years old, I was paralyzed (瘫痪的) from the waist down in a car accident. I spent months in a hospital, learning how to use a wheelchair, how to get up from the floor and how to dress myself. Basically how to live my life as independently as possible. After graduation from college, I made a year- long commitment to Lily of the Valley Children’s Village, outside Mophela, South Africa, where 90 percent of the children are infected with HIV. I would see to the kids’ medical needs and teach math and English. Those first few weeks were hard, harder than anything I had done before. I forced myself to keep trying. I needed to prove myself. But how could I tell if I was doing any good? One night, a big storm hit. I rolled out of my cottage the next morning and my chair lurched (突然倾斜), the wheels sinking into mud. I grasped the wheels tight and pushed hard. The chair wouldn’t move. All of my worst worries seemed to be coming true. I was stuck, hopelessly stuck. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw children running toward me. Two of the oldest grabbed the handlebars and the others pushed me forward. The wheels came free. The kids shouted with delight. When I said “Thank you!”, they laughed, “You help us. We help you.” That echoed in my ears all day. The next morning, the kids were waiting to push me through the mud to homework club. And the day after that, it became our little routine. The more they helped me, the easier it got to help them. The kids and I bonded. I wasn’t alone during my year in Africa. Not at all. I had reached out to the people I was assisting, and they, in turn, became my support. I was aware, more than ever, that anyone, even in a wheelchair, can make a difference. 24.What was the author’s unique challenge during this volunteer experience? A.Overcoming physical limitations. B.Adapting to a new cultural environment. C.Managing a long- term solo commitment. D.Dealing with the harsh weather conditions. 25.How did the author feel in the first few weeks in South Africa? A.Disappointed and wanting to give up. B.Satisfied with the progress made. C.Uncertain about the effectiveness of his help. D.Frustrated by the children’s lack of cooperation. 26.What was the turning point in the author’s relationship with the children? A.The children’s voluntary assistance. B.The author’s initial arrival in the village. C.The author’s first teaching session. D.The author’s struggle with the wheelchair. 27.What is the main idea of the passage? A.The struggle of adapting to a new environment. B.The transformative power of mutual support. C.The challenges of living with a physical disability. D.The impact of education on poor children. C Teenagers who talk on the cell phone a lot, and hold their phones up to their right ears, score worse on one type of memory test. That’s the finding of a new study. That memory impairment might be one side effect of the radiation (放射线) that phones use to keep us connected while we’re on the go. The teens took memory tests twice, one year apart. Nearly 700 Swiss teens took part in a test of figural memory. This type helps us remember abstract (抽象的) symbols and shapes, explains Milena Foerster. Each time, they had one minute to remember 13 pairs of abstract shapes. Then they were shown one item from each pair and asked to match it with one of the five choices. The study volunteers also took a test of verbal memory. That’s the ability to remember words. The two memory tests are part of an intelligence test. The researchers also surveyed the teens on how they use cell phones. And they got call records from phone companies. The researchers used those records to figure out how long the teens were using their phones. This allowed the researchers to work out how big radiation exposure (接触) each person could have got while talking. A phone user’s exposure to the radiation can differ widely. Some teens talk on their phones more than others. People also hold their phones differently. If the phone is close to the ear, more radiation may enter the body, Foerster notes. The teens’ scores in the figural memory tests were roughly the same from one year to the next. But those who normally held their phones near the right ears, and who were also exposed to higher levels of radiation, scored a little bit worse after a year. No group of teens showed big changes on the verbal memory test. Why might one type of memory be linked to cell phone use, but not another? Foerster thinks it could have to do with where different memory centers sit in the brain. The site that deals with the ability to remember shapes is near the right ear. 28.The underlined word “impairment” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean “_______ ”. A.result B.damage C.mistake D.improvement 29.Which of the following can be learned from Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3? A.The teens took two types of memory tests four times in total. B.The teens needed to report the average time spent on their phones. C.Researchers paid little attention to the teens’ habits of using phones. D.The teens’ ability of remembering words is shown in figural memory test. 30.According to the study, teens who use their phone s to their right ears a lot do worse in _____. A.matching numbers B.reading signals C.remembering shape D.learning words 31.Which of the following is the best title for the text? A.Cell Phone Use and Safety Warnings B.Facts About Cell Phone Use at School C.Dangerous Levels of Cell Phone Use Among Teens D.Teen’s Cell Phone Use Linked to Memory Problems D A bike path in Krommenie, a city in the Netherlands, isn’t just helping people get around — it’s also producing energy. The path, named SolaRoad, is paved (铺) with solar cells (太阳能电池), which use the power of the sun to make electricity. The project was created to show that the places where people ride, walk, or drive can also serve to produce energy. And the solar-powered path is doing a better job than expected. So far, it has created enough electricity to power three houses for a year. Many cities already cover rooftops with solar panels By using renewable (可再生的) sources of energy, urban areas can decrease their dependence on fossil fuels, like coal, oil, and natural gas. Renewable sources of energy don’t get used up or create pollution as fossil fuels do. Roads could provide an even larger space than roofs to harvest energy from the sun. Sten de Wit, one of the researchers behind SolaRoad, says, “In the Netherlands, we have about 140,000 kilometers of roads. It’s a huge area, more than all of the rooftops combined.” To create the experimental bike path, the SolaRoad team laid down concrete slabs (混凝土板) with rows of solar cells above. A layer of strong glass covers and protects the cells. Sunlight passes through the glass and into the cells, which turn the sunlight into electrical energy. Although the bike path was expensive to build, with the energy it produces, it could pay for itself within 15 years. By building solar-powered bike paths and roads, cities could produce enough energy to power streetlamps, traffic lights, and even electric cars. Most people don’t notice that the bike path is different from a traditional street. Sten de Wit says, “That is exactly what we want: it does whatever it has to do to be a proper road while harvesting solar energy at the same time.” 32. What do we know about renewable sources of energy? A. They are friendly to the environment. B. They are only fit for urban areas. C. They are more expensive than fossil fuels. D. They provide more energy than fossil fuels. 33. Which of the following shows the right structure of the bike path? (=concrete slabs = solar cells =strong glass) A. B. C. D. 34. What can we know from the last paragraph? A. Not all people consider SolaRoads are useful. B. SolaRoads look the same as traditional roads. C. Most urban areas can’t afford to build SolaRoads. D. The solar-powered bike path is worth the effort. 35. What can be the best title of the text? A. New solar cells take the place of traditional solar panels. B. A bike path in the Netherlands produces energy from the sun. C. A new kind of solar-powered bike gets ready to amaze you. D. A new way of making solar cells promises cheaper power. Tips For Making Travel Easy & Fun Curious about how to travel the world? When they separated, the girl was only three years old. W: It’s amazing that they finally reunited. 3.C 【原文】W: Do you like writing? M: Yes. I hope I can be a great writer like Ernest Hemingway. He is my favorite writer. I’m especially fond of his novel The Sun Also Rises. W: Yeah. It’s a great book. Margaret Mitchell and Saul Bellow both thought highly of it. 4.B 【原文】W: Do you often have financial conversations with your wife? M: Seldom. I don’t have much knowledge of finance. I don’t know what to talk about. W: Well, you’d better visit Lincoln Financial online. It can help you. 5.B 【原文】W: Hello, sir. When is the next flight to New York? M: Let me check. Cleaning teeth every day contributes to a lower risk of heart problems. W: Really? I usually take a shower and wash my face every day, but sometimes I forget to clean my teeth. How do you know that? M: I just read a study published last Monday. W: How did the researchers conduct the study? M: They collected information on about 160,000 people. Years later, they found three percent had developed uneven heart beat and that almost five percent had developed heart failure. One of the big causes might be that these people didn’t attach great importance to cleaning teeth. W: Got it. 8.A 9.C 10.A 【原文】W: David, have you decided what to study in college? M: Not really. My brother is studying medicine now. My parents arc happy about it. You know, my father is a doctor. My mom is a nurse. They want both of us to follow their path. I forced myself to keep trying. I needed to prove myself. But how could I tell if I was doing any good? 根据第六段“Out of the corner of my eye, I saw children running toward me. 根据第一段“Teenagers who talk on the cell phone a lot, and hold their phones up to their right ears, score worse on one type of memory test.(在一项记忆力测试中,经常打电话并把手机举到右耳前的青少年得分更低。)” 根据第二段中“The teens took memory tests twice, one year apart.
