M:Good evening, everybody. I'm George. I'm so glad that for today's programme, we have J.K. Rowling to share with us how she became a famous writer. Let's welcome her.
W:Hi, everybody. I'm J.K. Rowling. I'm so glad to be here. Actually, I began writing stories at the age of six and always daydreamed of becoming a writer. In 1990, when I was stuck for four hours on a train, I dreamt of a boy called “Harry Potter”. Before I started to write about Harry Potter, my husband left me and our threemonthold daughter. So I decided to start writing novels to have a new life and wrote my first Harry Potter novel. I sent my novel to a lot of publishing houses. They doubted my writing skills and rejected me. This went on until the year 1996, when the Bloomsbury publishing house agreed to help me. In 1997, Harry Potter was published, and the character soon became one of children's most favorite characters. We had to print more copies several times. In 1998, in the month of February, my very first novel was awarded the British Book Award for “Children's Book of the Year”.

40.选C 下文中的His wonderful idea指代上文描述的关于父亲想到补贴家用的好办法。这个让作者受益终生的好主意正是C项中的I can never thank him enough的原因。

When it comes to clever dogs, it's hard to imagine a faster, sharper or braver dog than Bear.
This little wonder has made himself quite famous for his special ability to smell out injured and homeless koalas (考拉) in places that just went through forest fires.
What he wasn't expecting was becoming an international superstar, attracting thousands of followers on social media (媒体) and even catching the attention of Hollywood stars Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio!
“We had special fireproof (防火的) shoes made for him to protect his feet from being hurt,” explains proud owner and wildlife campaigner Tyson Mayr, 34, who teamed up with Bear after looking for a way to help animals influenced by the forest fires.
“Bear's so strong, but the moment he gets up close and personal with a little one he's saved, he gets quite sad.”
Tyson reached out to the International Fund for Animal Welfare, which directed him to the Detection Dogs for Conservation program at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, where Bear was in training.
“I'll never forget meeting Bear for the first time, looking into those beautiful blue eyes. Even today I tear up because he is the real deal,” says Tyson, adding that Bear was forced to leave his first owners because of his obsessivecompulsive disorder (强迫症).
“Firsthand, I quickly saw just how much of an influence he was having. He runs for 10 km without even a drink stop, and can save up to 50 koalas in a day.”
“The koalas know he's out there to save them,” adds Tyson. “I think they'd agree with the rest of us that dogs really do make life so much better!”

About 3 in 10 people worldwide, or 2.1 billion, lack access to safe and readily available water at home, and 6 in 10, or 4.5 billion, lack safely managed sanitation (卫生设备), according to a report by WHO and UNICEF.
The report presents the first global judgment of “safely managed” drinking water and sanitation services. The conclusion is that too many people still lack access, particularly in rural areas.
“Safe water and sanitation at home shouldn't only belong to rich people,” says WHO DirectorGeneral Dr Tedros Adhanom. “These are the basic requirements for human health, and all countries must ensure that everyone can access them.”
Billions of people have gained access to basic drinking water and sanitation services since 2000, but these services don't necessarily provide safe water and sanitation. Many homes, healthcare organizations and schools also still lack soap (香皂) and water for hand washing. This puts the health of all people, especially young children, at risk for diseases, such as diarrhoea (腹泻).As a result, every year, 361,000 children under the age of 5 die of diarrhoea.
“Safe water and effective sanitation are essential. They are beneficial to the health of every child and every community,” said UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake. “As we improve these services for the poorest children today, we give them a fairer chance and a better future.”
Good hygiene (卫生健康) is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent the spread of disease. For the first time, the SDGs are monitoring the percentage of people who have facilities to wash their hands at home with soap and water. According to the new report, access to water and soap for hand washing is terribly different in the 70 countries with available data, from 15 percent of the population in subSaharan Africa to 76 percent in western Asia and northern Africa.
28. What can we learn from Dr Tedros Adhanom's words?
A. All people should have available safe water and sanitation.
B. The government should care more about people's health.
C. It is very difficult to deal with water problems.
D. People have to pay a lot for safe water.
29. 361,000 children under the age of 5 die of diarrhoea every year for lack of .
A. nutritious food B. enough exercise
C. medicine and safe water D. soap and water for washing hands
30. What does the underlined word “essential” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Expensive. B. Impossible. C. Necessary. D. Free.
31. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. SDGs have done a lot to protect water resources.
B. The government should take more measures to save water.
C. People in northern Africa worry less about lacking water.
D. Good hygiene is important to stopping diseases from spreading.
D篇
You're probably already heard that 35 million tons of food go to waste every year in the United States. Every family in the nation loses from $1,600 to$2,000 each year to food that is bought but not eaten. That loss is more than what it costs to feed a family of four for an entire month. It's unbelievable. However, food waste not only happens in the US. Global food waste is very serious, with over a fifth of food going to waste.
Why is so much food wasted? The food that is left to go bad, or that is thrown away, only makes up about nine percent of the world's food waste. The other ten percent is due to overeating. Meat production can also cause waste. For example, it takes 1.08 billion tons of crops to produce 240 million tons of animal products.
Therefore, we need to eat fewer animal products and pay attention to our personal food waste, whether it is from overeating or throwing food away. Dr Peter Alexander, an expert on food waste, said, “Reducing (降低) losses from the global food system would improve food safety and help prevent environmental harm.”
There are plenty of ways to make changes to your personal food waste. Not overeating is a goal everyone can get behind. Eating your every meal until you are 80% full will keep you and the planet healthy. Not only is junk food normally where people are overeating, but it also takes more energy to produce it than naturallyoccurring food. Buying local produce and meat is another easy way to do your part. Before you reach for another bag of cookies, make sure you aren't just throwing food away by doing so.Pay attention to what you eat and how it made its way to you. The planet will thank you.
32. What can we know about food waste from Paragraph 1?
A. It has drawn much attention.
B. It's still a big problem worldwide.
C. It's difficult to solve this problem.
D. It causes great harm to the environment.
33. What does the example of animal products in Paragraph 2 tell us?
A. Food safety is a very big problem now.
B. It takes a long time to produce meat.
C. Meat production can cause much food waste.
D. Animal products are more expensive than other food.
34. What do the words of Dr Peter Alexander in Paragraph 3 show?
A. Food waste is a big cause of global warming.
B. Preventing food waste is of great importance.
C. Food safety is now more serious than food waste.
D. Everyone should pay attention to their personal food waste.
35. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The reasons why we should pay attention to our personal food waste.
B. The differences between junk food and naturallyoccurring food.
C. The methods of reducing our personal food waste.
D. The things we can do to protect the planet.
第二节 7选5阅读(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Dad worked fulltime at a factory, but he found it was too hard to support the family. 36 One day, he had an idea.
It was Sunday, so Dad and I were at the flea market, where lots of old and used things were sold at low prices. Some were broken; others, like copper (铜) cups and silver plates, just needed to be cleaned and polished (抛光).
Standing beside a table at the flea market, I looked over an ancient electric sewing machine (缝纫机). 37 However, it looked like it had quality and longevity built into it. “Dad!” I called. “This is a beauty!”
Dad hurried over, carrying electric machines, tools, and what appeared to be some old kitchen knives. He asked, “Whatcha got, Son?” 38 Dad paid for my discovery, and we headed home.
Every day after school I worked on the ancient machine, and every night Dad and I sharpened (使变锋利) tools and knives, polished them, and did some simple fixing. 39 There we sold the things we'd bought the week before—at higher prices. My ancient beauty brought in more money than anything else, and Dad let me keep every penny.
40 His wonderful idea set me on a lifelong course of selfsufficiency (自给自足).

Mr. Calvin was a generous billionaire with many international companies. Rich as he was, he was kind to others. He donated large amounts of money to charities each year. He also saved many young people who were walking down the wrong road.
When he had business meetings in New York, he used to live in Willard Hotel. Once in the middle of the night, Mr. Calvin awoke and saw a young man, who entered his room through a window, going through his clothes. He watched as he first removed a wallet, and then found a watch on the dresser. Mr. Calvin calmly spoke up in the darkness, “About that watch, I wish you wouldn't take that.”
The frightened man, gaining his voice, asked, “Why?”
Mr. Calvin answered, “I don't mean the watch, only the charm (小挂件).I'm very fond of that charm. It is meaningful to me. Take it near the window and read what is engraved (刻上) on the back of it.”
The young man read, “Presented to Mr. Calvin for your donation to the homeless in New York City.” And now he was more surprised!
“Are you Mr. Calvin?” he was shocked to read the words. He obviously did not think he'd find the famous billionaire sleeping in this hotel. And he had seen him on the street when he was a boy.
“Yes, I am, and I don't want you to take that charm,” he said. Then he asked, “Son, tell me why you are doing this. Don't worry. I promise not to tell your secret to others.”
The young man explained that he and a friend traveled to Washington during their college break. They spent all of their money and had no money to pay the hotel bill or pay for train passage back to school. “If you don't mind,” he said, “I'll just take the wallet.”
Mr. Calvin did mind. He knew he had about $80 in his wallet. So he said, “How much will it cost you to pay the hotel bill and get you and your friend back to the campus? Sit down and let's talk this over.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式作答。
The young man said he just needed $32.
