It takes Sanduk Ruit about five minutes to change someone's life. The Nepalese doctor can
make a small incision(切口)in his patient'seye,remove the cataract(白内障)damaging the
patient's vision and replace it with an inexpensive artificial lens.He said,"Some of our younger
doctors even do it faster than that."
In the past decades,Ruit has personally restored the sight of more than 100,000 people across
Asia and Africa, and taught his rapid-fire technique to countless other eye doctors in parts of the
world. His patients suffer from eye conditions that are mostly preventable. But because of lack of
money and limited access to public health services, they have been unable to seek treatment.Their
stories are all too common in the developing world.
Driven by a belief that the world's poorest people deserve safe, affordable and high-quality eye
care just as much as anyone else,Ruit has made it his mission to root out avoidable blindness.
In 1994,he joined the late Australian eye doctor Fred Hollows, who was his mentor and close
friend,in establishing Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology-an eye hospital in Kathmandu devoted
to providing world-class eyecare for the people of Nepal. The hospital makes the state-of-the-art
lens that is commonly used in treating cataracts or myopia, and exports it to more than 30 countries
worldwide
,
For the patients who cannot reach urban areas,Ruit and his team conduct mobile eye camps in
remote parts of Nepal and neighboring countries. They often trek for days to.those areas and clean
out structures like tents, classrooms or even stables for use as temporary operating rooms. When the
eyepatches (come off the day after an operation,it's an extremely moving moment for all
relevant persons.Ruit said that he was so grateful that he could make a difference in so many

Trying to figure out if your friend is angry? You may look at his or her face. However,a new
study finds when people are at the peak of joy or despair, their body language is a more reliable
indicator of their emotions than their face.
"You can't tell from the face alone if something good is going on or bad going on.When people
see the faces alone, they're kind of lost,"said Julliel Hievet,a psychologist at the Hebrew
University."The body maintains a clear signal of positive and negative."
Hievet also noted that most researches on reading emotions focused on the face.Afew studies
had shown people rely on body language to read emotions when it conflicts with someone's facial
expression, but those studies used trained actors in poses.
His research team wanted to see how people use body language to read intense emotions. To do
so,his team gathered dozens of images of outstanding tennis players at the moment they won or lost
critical points in competitions like the U.S.Open.They showed three groups of 15 participants
images of just the face, just the body,or both together, and asked the viewers whether the images
showed positive or negative emotions.
People.who saw the body-with or without the face-accurately distinguished whether the
player was happy or distraugh. Those who viewed just the faces failed to do so.
The team also transformed winning faces onto losing bodies and vice versa(反之亦然,and
found the body cues determined whether viewers thought the players had won.

The findings don't rule out the face from all emotional indicators,he said."But when things
become very intense, the good and the bad combine together, and it's hard to tell if it's positive or
negative,"he added.
Interestingly, when people saw a body and face together, they said they made judgments based
on facial expression."People use information from the body and then they read it into the face,"
Hievet said.
28.What is the finding of the new study?
A You cannot tell one's emotions from the face.
B.Body can better indicate intense emotions than face.
C.People thought they make judgments from the body
D.Facial expressiens tend to be different in joy and despair.
29.Why are other studies mentioned in paragraph 3?
A.To summurize the previous studies.
B.To prove the value of facial expression.
C To show the limitation of existing studies
D.To introduce similar findings of other studies.
30.The underlined word "distraught"in paragraph 5 probably means
A.excited
B.indiffereut
C.shocked
D.upset
31.What does Hievet's quote in the last paragraph suggest?
A.People may think it hard to read intense emotions.
B.People read more informatien from facial expressions
C.People are unaware of using body language to read emotions.
D.People can distinguish emotions from body and facial expression.

For most ordinary purposes, machine translation (MT)has got a lot better in the past years.
The biggest source of improvement has been the adoption of"deep leamning"in training translating
systems. But improvement has also come about through the expansion of clever companies solving
individual tasks. Some have created specialist.dictionaries so that important terms can be translated
accurately and consistently.Other inventions combine MT with a human translator's editing tools,
which means translators spend most of their time checking and perfecting MT output, rather than
doing the work of the translating themselves.
For some translators, being a machine's editor may sound depressing. This can be seen the
other way around, however.A human repeatedly translating identical formulae can get bored.
Allowing the machine to do these boring jobs frees the translator to apply specialized knowledge,
solving more intellectually satisfying problems.

What are those problems? One Madrid-based translator for a big law fimm describes arece
task.It involved making a critical distinction in a legal document:a Spanish word (dolo)that
properly translated as"wilful misconduct"was translated only.as"misconduct"by sofware.Sin
the law requires considerably severer punishment when the misconduct is"wilful",the omission(
)was potentially disastrous.
Today, many translation firms are proud of using MT,not as a crutch (but as a means
cut costs and turnaround times.Part of their job becomes knowing what can be automated and wha
cannot.Instruction manuals can be left to MT while others like a novel legal argument cannot.
The bad news for some translators is that a tap of repeatable, easy work is being tumed off
The good news is that what remains will be brain-challenging stuff for people who know a language
and something else.Tales of artificial intelligence usually test humans against machines. But th
translators of the future will be neither entirely.human nor machine. They will be human being
with mechanical enhancements.
32.What can we leamn about machine translation from paragraph 1?
A.It has been mostly used by specialists.
B.Lots of efforts have been made to improve it.
C.Some clever companies have made a fortune from it.
D.It has replaced human translators in some simple tasks.
33.What can be inferred from the case mentioned by the Madrid-based translator?
A.Experienced translators are hard to find.
B.Machine translation can be inaccurate.
C.Machine translation has led to many misjudgments.
D.It is difficult for translators to teH"wilful misconduct"from"misconduct".
34.What is many translation firms'attitude towards using machine translation today?
A.Positive.B.Critical.
e.Uninterested.D.Doubtful.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A:Technology contributes to productive translators
B.-Translation is faced with a great technical challenge
C.The translator of the future is a human-machine hybrid
D.Career opportunities in the field of translation are increasing

aoademically.
