The book is so interesting. Even today, it is quite popular among kids. Although I am in my thirties, the book remains one of my favorites. After re-reading the book recently, I have learned an important lesson from Tom Sawyer. In our daily lives, we are often given some boring or tiring work. What’s in your mind when your mom tells you to clean the floor? Have you ever wanted to complain (抱怨)? I think most people have. Tom Sawyer, however, thought “differently” when he was asked to do something boring. One Saturday morning, Aunt Polly told Tom to paint fence ( 篱 笆 ). Tom’s friend Ben Rogers happened to walk past. Tom told Ben that he felt “excited” about the work. “Only one in a thousand—maybe even two thousand—boys can do this!” Tom said. Tom’s words made Ben interested in the work. He even gave Tom his apple so that he could have a chance to paint the fence. If Tom had thought about nothing but complaining, he would have had a bad day painting the fence. This story teaches me an important lesson: Complaining is useless. The next time you are given boring or tiring work, don’t complain. Unlike what happens in the story of Tom Sawyer, it is possible that nobody will come and do the work for you. However, without complaining, you’ll feel better and perhaps even do a better job! 38. Who writes the classic The Adventures of Tom Sawyer? A. Mark Twain. B. Aunt Polly. C. Ben Rogers. D. Tom Sawyer 39. Why did Tom say the underlined sentence to Ben in Paragraph 3? A. To show his sadness. B. To catch Ben’s interest. C. To show his excitement. D. To show the work is difficult. 40 Put the following information into correct order according to the passage. a.Ben Rogers walked past. b.Aunt Polly told Tom to paint fence. c.Tom said that he felt “excited” about painting fence. d.Ben gave Tom his apple to get the chance to paint the fence. A. a-c-b-d B. a-b-c-d C. b-a-c-d D. b-a-d-c 41. What is Tom Sawyer like according to this passage? A. Brave. B. Clever. C. Talented. D. Hardworking. 42. Which of the following is the writers’ opinion? A. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is kind of boring. B. He doesn’t think he can learn anything from the book. C. All people like complaining when they are given boring or tiring work. D. It is useless to complain when you are given something boring or tiring. 38. A 39. B 40. C 41. B 42. He even gave Tom his apple so that he could have a chance to paint the fence.” 根据“One Saturday morning, Aunt Polly told Tom to paint fence (篱笆). Tom’s friend Ben Rogers happened to walk past. Tom told Ben that he felt ‘happy’ about the work.”以及“He even gave Tom his apple so that he could have a chance to paint the fence.” 根据“Tom’s words made Ben interested in the work. He even gave Tom his apple so that he could have a chance to paint the fence.” 根据“This story teaches me a valuable lesson: Complaining is useless.” D。 C The Great Pyramid is near the city of Giza, Egypt and it has stood there for more than 4,500 years. As you might imagine, something that has been around for such a long time has quite a history. The Great Pyramid was built by the Egyptian King Khufu. Khufu wanted to build a great palace for himself after he died. In the beginning, his pyramid was 481 feet tall. Now the Great Pyramid faces some problems. One problem is that the pyramid is becoming smaller. In fact, the building has lost about 30 feet of its original (最初的) height. It’s not because the pyramid is running into the sand. The building has actually lost height over the years because people have taken its outer layers (外层) of rock and used the rock to build other buildings. Giza is not far from Egypt’s capital city, Cairo. As Cairo grew over centuries, the need for new buildings increased. To meet that need, people took stones from the pyramid’s outer layers and used them to build houses and other buildings. And also the wind, sun, and rain have worn down the same outer layers of the pyramid. The Great Pyramid is also being worn away from inside. Thousands of tourists visit the Great Pyramid every year. As they walk through the rooms inside the pyramid, the water from their breath stays inside the walls. Over time the water collects into salts and makes the stones worn down. Luckily, Zahi Hawass tried his best to save the Great Pyramid and the smaller pyramids that are around it. Hawass worked to make people know the problems caused by allowing too many people to walk through the pyramids. Making the government stop people from going there was difficult, because tourists are important to Egypt. So Hawass thought of the idea—When one pyramid was closed for fixing, he made sure that others were open for people to enjoy. Although interest in the pyramids was protected, tourists would see these great buildings only from the outside. “In my opinion,” he says, “the magic of the pyramid is on the outside, not on the inside.” 43. What’s the height of the Great Pyramid now? A. 451 feet. B. 521 feet. C. 481 feet. D. 511 feet. 44. What happened to the Great Pyramid as Cairo increased in size and population? A. It started running into the sand. B. Water started collecting inside its wall. C. People used its outer rock to build other buildings. D. The water and the wind started wearing down its out layers. 45. What are the natural factors (因素) that lead to the Pyramid’s getting smaller? a. the sound b. the water c. the electricity d. the light e. the wind A. a, b, e B. b, c, d C. b, d, e D. a, b, c 46. Which idea would Hawass most likely agree? A. Modern buildings are often more beautiful than ancient ones. B. Places of interest around the world should be fully open to tourists. C. Countries need to stop building modern cities near places of interest. D. People should take care to protect places of interest around the world. 47. What can we know from the last paragraph? A. Why the pyramids are popular with tourists. B. When tourists can visit the pyramids. C. Who should protect the pyramids. D. What can be done to protect the pyramids. 43. A 44. C 45. C 46. D 47. To meet that need, people took stones from the pyramid’s outer layers and used them to build houses and other buildings.” 根据第二段中的“And also the wind, sun, and rain have worn down the same outer layers of the pyramid.” 根据最后一段中的“Hawass worked to make people know the problems caused by allowing too many people to walk through the pyramids.”以及“So Hawass thought of the idea—When one pyramid was closed for fixing, he made sure that others were open for people to enjoy. Although interest in the pyramids was protected, tourists would see these great buildings only from the outside. ‘In my opinion,’ he says, ‘the magic of the pyramid is on the outside, not on the inside.’” 根据最后一段中的“So Hawass thought of the idea—When one pyramid was closed for fixing, he made sure that others were open for people to enjoy. Although interest in the pyramids was protected, tourists would see these great buildings only from the outside.” D。 D Many people enjoy seeing busy little squirrels running around a park. It might surprise you, then, to learn that some squirrels are in danger. Without protection, you may not see the UK’s red squirrels in just ten years. The main reason is that people brought gray squirrels to the UK in the 1890s. They are larger and longer. They are also better at competing for food and space than red squirrels. As a result, the country’s red squirrels are hard to survive. Another problem is that gray squirrels have brought with them the squirrel pox virus They can carry this virus without any influences (影响) on themselves, but it kills red squirrels. Animals scientists are worried that these problems are having a serious influence. People in the UK love their red squirrels, so they are doing their best to save them. They came up with a few ideas. One is to stop the gray squirrels from having more babies. With fewer gray squirrels to compete with or spread the virus, the red squirrels will have a better chance. Besides, the trees in the UK will also be healthier, since gray squirrels sometimes hurt trees. Another idea is to use gray squirrels’ natural enemies (敌人) to cut down their numbers. For example, pine martens mainly catch gray squirrels instead of red squirrels. Scientists are putting pine martens in the areas with too many gray squirrels so that different animals can live together better in this way. With these plans, people in the UK hope their red squirrels will make a comeback. 48. What does the underlined word “survive” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Continue to live. B. Continue to play. C. Continue to sleep. D. Continue to walk. 49. What can we know about red squirrels according to the passage? A. They sometimes hurt trees. B. Pine martens like catching them. C. They are larger and longer than gray squirrels. D. Squirrel pox virus from gray squirrels can kill them. 50. What is the main idea of paragraph 4? A. Why people in the UK love their red squirrels. B. Why British do their best to save red squirrels. C. How British try their best to save red squirrels. D. How British try their best to save the trees there. 51. How many ways of saving red squirrels are mentioned in the passage? A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four. 52. What would be the best structure of the passage? A. B. C. D. 【答案】48. A 49. D 50. C 51. B 52. 根据“The main reason is that people brought gray squirrels to the UK in the 1890s. They are larger and longer. They are also better at competing for food and space than red squirrels. As a result, the country’s red squirrels are hard to survive.” 故选A。 根据“Another problem is that gray squirrels have brought with them the squirrel pox virus. They can carry this virus without any influences on themselves, but it kills red squirrels.” 根据“People in the UK love their red squirrels, so they are doing their best to save them. They came up with a few ideas. One is to stop...” 根据“One is to stop the gray squirrels from having more babies.”和“Another idea is to use gray squirrels’ natural enemies to cut down their numbers.” Have you ever considered the way you spend your money? You can make smart decisions about your money. ____53____ One way to be smart with your money is to shop around before you buy. 40. All people like complaining when they are given boring or tiring work. D. It is useless to complain when you are given something boring or tiring. C The Great Pyramid is near the city of Giza, Egypt and it has stood there for more than 4,500 years. D Many people enjoy seeing busy little squirrels running around a park. C.
