Zhai Yuliang becomes extra busy whenever the holidays are around the corner. The Beijinger, in his 60s, has just finished a pair of palace lanterns for a courtyard home in the capital.
“The owner wants every part of them to be done in the old-fashioned way, so that they will fit perfectly with the grand style of their historical house.” says Zhai, who has practiced the craft for more than four decades. One of the most popular styles, which is also Zhai’s favorite, is the double-layered octagonal (八角形的) palace lantern. It’s full of Chinese elements, and features dragon heads and many other specific patterns.
However, he stresses the essential elements to be classified as palace lanterns — hand-painted scenes and Chinese knots as decoration. Most importantly, they must be created using the specific techniques, which require over 100 steps.
To make a palace lantern, a single craftsman has to do everything from the woodwork to the painting. “It takes months to make a palace lantern,” Zhai says. “It requires the skills of a woodworker, the knowledge of a mechanic, an appreciation of classical architecture, poetry, painting and an additional talent for mortise-and-tenon joints (榫卯) by hand before they can create the right carvings and layer combinations.
Zhai has received many invitations from communities and institutes to show the charm of palace lanterns. He particularly enjoys hosting workshops where he teaches people to make lanterns themselves. He is enchanted to see the smiles of children and the expressions of adults when they complete their works under his guidance.
He believes his lifelong devotion to this craft has been worthwhile. His lanterns can be seen in such locations as the Tian’anmen Square and many overseas sites that promote friendship with China.
“Wherever you are, when you see a palace lantern, you know there’s a connect ion to China,” Zhai says.
24. What is a must for a palace lantern?
A. A dragon head in grand style. B. Application of over 100 techniques.
C. A double-layered octagonal pattern. D. Hand-painted scenes and Chinese knots.
25. Which of the following best describes the process of making a palace lantern?
A. Boring. B. Costly. C. Demanding. D. Innovative.
26. What does the underlined word “enchanted” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Envious. B. Curious. C. Stressed D. Delighted.
27. Which of the following about palace lanterns may Zhai Yuliang agree with?
A. They bring him fame and fortune.
B. They act as a cultural link to China.
C. They’re well preserved in overseas locations.
D. They connect him with many other craftsmen.

I love holidays! There’s nothing better than jetting off to a foreign destination to visit the attractions it has on offer. Of course, I’m not alone. Millions of people are doing the same, and why not? The world has an amazing variety of must-see sights, from breathtaking natural scenery to impressive old cities. But the problem is that too many of us are visiting them at the same time, putting pressure on these delicate and ancient places.
That’s why a number of beauty spots and historic sites have been introducing charges or restrictions on the tourists who visit. There are many reasons for this: to reduce overcrowding, which can spoil the atmosphere of a place, to manage wear and tear on old buildings, to tidy up the mess that visitors leave behind, or-as some may suggest-creating tourist traps to make more money out of the visitors.
The famous Italian city of Venice with its picturesque canals has, for example, introduced an entry fee of up to€10 for short-stay tourists. Venetians have long complained that mass tourism is wearing out the city. Now, passengers arriving by cruise ship will have to pay a “landing tax” which Mayor Luigi Brugnaro says, “would generate much-needed income to keep the city clean.”
Many cities in Europe already charge an occupancy tax on tourists who stay in hotels and guest houses. In the UK, Edinburgh is hoping to do the same, controversially making it the first city in the country to do so. This tax that is usually charged per person per night of accommodation raises money to help protect the environment, pay for infrastructure (基础建设), or promote tourism.
In Italy’s capital city, Rome, new laws are being introduced to clamp down on bad tourist behavior, which some argue is spoiling the look and feel of the city. Rules include banning drinking water from fountains and attaching “love padlocks” to bridges.
As more of us can now afford to travel, global tourist destinations are going to get busier, so maybe new taxes and laws are going to be a necessary part of the sightseeing experience.
28. Why do many attractions introduce charges or restrictions on tourists?
A. To relieve stress on the fine and old places. B. To adopt a hunger- marketing strategy.
C. To pay for cruise ship and accommodation. D. To include a necessary part of sightseeing.
29. Why does the author mention Edinburgh?
A. To stress the importance of tourism. B. To give another example of tourist tax.
C. To encourage people to pay tax. D. To recommend hotels and guest houses.
30. Which word could best replace the underlined phrase “clamp down on” in paragraph 5?
A Spoil. B. Spot. C. Prohibit. D. Promote.
31. What may be the author’s opinion about the new taxes and laws?
A. They will lead to more crowded sites. B. The effect will die down.
C. They will encounter strong opposition. D. The trend will spread out.

When you think of a cute, furry wild animal, you often picture a koala. These adorable- looking creatures appear friendly, so it’s no wonder people are concerned about the future of the species after the bushfires that destroyed parts of Australia from 2019 to 2020. Luckily, many survived, which gives us a chance to continue to learn more about these marsupials (有袋目哺乳动物).
Australia’s native and unique wildlife such as kangaroos, platypus and koalas, are under constant threat from human activity and natural disasters. It’s thought at least a billion animals lost their lives as a result of the four- month bushfires. Recently, drones and thermal imaging technology (热成像技术) have been used to track their movements to help them keep safe. Protecting these unique species is important because, as The Australian Koala Foundation estimates, there are now possibly as few as43,000 koalas in the wild.
So, what is so special about koalas and what makes them so “cool”? Maybe we envy their ability to sleep for up to 22 hours a day! Or could it be their laid- back appearance due to the fact that they are herbivores (食草动物) and mainly feed on juicy eucalyptus leaves (桉树叶), which take a lot of time and energy to digest?
What is amazing is that because they often live in a dry and hot environment, they drink very little water. So, how do they survive? Well, scientists have discovered that these wild mammals lick running water off the smooth surface of a tree trunk when it is raining. This phenomenon is called “stemflow”. Valentina Mella, the lead author of the research from the University of Sydney, told the BBC: “I think the main message is that behavioral observations in the wild are very important to establish what is normal and what is unusual, and to truly understand what animals need. If we watch them carefully, they will tell us.”
So despite the word “koala” meaning “no drink” or “no water” in the Aboriginal language, it seems that even these sleepy creatures do need a drink sometimes. And if we encourage them to flourish (昌盛) again, we need to conserve their habitat and protect them in a way they favor.
32. What can be learned about koalas from the first two paragraphs?
A. They are the only marsupials unique to Australia.
B. They are occasionally threatened by natural disasters.
C. They are saved from the bushfires by high technologies.
D. They are endangered wildlife with a small population.
33. What can be concluded about “stemflow”?
A. It is a rare phenomenon in a dry environment.
B. It is the main water source for koalas.
C. It helps to discover abnormal koalas.
D. It shows what wild animals need.
34. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To criticize Australia’s forest fire fighting. B. To introduce the habits of koalas.
C. To present a new discovery about koalas. D. To appeal for koala conservation.
35. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Cool Koalas In Hot Water B. Wild Koalas: A Ship Of The Desert
C. Cute Koalas Between Two Fires D. Sleepy Koalas: An Enviable Friend

Could eating jellyfish be sustainable?
Like giant sharks in films, jellyfish poses a major threat in real life — to kill people with their stings (叮咬). ___36___ They are reported to attack salmon farms, shut down power stations etc. A research is even on whether box jellyfish could ultimately destroy our oceans — so could eating them be a possible solution?
● How is their ability to reproduce?
Some people argue that due to their reproductive cycle, jellyfish are actually a sustainable food source. ___37___ This is because they are spawned (孵出) from polyps (水螅体) on the seabed. In some ways, you can compare them to apples. When you take an apple from a tree, the tree still goes on to produce more apples.
● What about their nutritional value?
Jellyfish contain 36 calories per ounce, which equals iceberg lettuce. ___38___ And indeed, in many parts of the world, particularly in Asia, they are already consumed, often raw, fried or chopped up as part of a salad.
● ___39___
While some say they are flavourless, others describe them as having a salty taste. This could be due to their absorbent nature, which also leads them to being often served in a sauce. As for the texture, some people negatively compare the experience to eating gristle (软骨).
They might not be the tastiest thing you’ve ever eaten, but it beats fleeing the sea to avoid being stung. ___40___
A. But what do they taste like?
B. Who would like to order them?
C. And the potential danger they cause doesn’t stop there.
D. However, it is full of protein, making it potentially a great diet food.
E. Removing a jellyfish from the ocean doesn’t stop new ones being born.
F. In addition, it is very convenient for the fishermen to reproduce and catch them.
G. So the next time you want something fresh, look at jellyfish as a sustainable alternative.

As they traveled through the picturesque countryside, they stumbled upon (偶然发现) an old museum. Little did Tara know that this detour (绕行) would change her perspective on life forever.
As the banners (横幅标语) over the museum waving in the breeze came into view, curiosity got the better of Tara.
Squirming (扭动) on the seat of the bus, she cried out,“ Hey, guys! How about having a stopover?” Tara pointed to the fancy building in the distance.
“International Youth Day?” one fellow read the letters on the banner in a questioning tone. “Doesn’t it sound boring?”
“Well, look at the attractive scene! What do we have to lose?” Tara pushed.
“Not bad! We can hang around in the town to grab a quick meal.” Another boy echoed.
Eventually, her friends were convinced.
Walking into the museum, Tara and her fellows were greeted with exhibitions and interactive displays, all centered around the significance of International Youth Day.
They came across a section concerning Swami Vivekananda, an honored and respected global philosopher and spiritual leader. He was a beacon (灯塔) of inspiration for the youth of his time and his teachings continue to resonate (产生共鸣) with people across generations.
As Tara dug deeper, she discovered his core principles emphasized self-belief, selflessness and service to society.

In the old days, there were no supermarkets, so people had to go to lots of different shops. In the future, people will do all their shopping online.
M: I don’t believe that.
W: Me neither.

【原文】W: Good morning, everyone. Today I’d like to talk about Drew Barrymore. Barrymore was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1975. She began her acting life very early. Before her first birthday, she appeared in a TV advertisement for dog food. At the age of two, she acted in her first TV movie. At age five, she appeared in her first film, the science fiction Altered States. Barrymore’s big break came when she was seven. Director Steven Spielberg decided to let her act in his film E. T. Hollywood took notice, and Barrymore became a star. As a young adult, Barrymore acted in several dramas and comedies; however, she wanted to make her own films. In 1995, she started her own production company, Flower Films. Four years later, she produced her first film, Never Been Kissed. Over the years, her company has made a lot of famous movies and TV programs, including Fever Pitch in 2005 and the Charlie’s Angels in 2011. In 2007, Barrymore’s life took a new turn. She began working for the United Nations World Food Program. Later, she donated 1 million dollars to the program. Then, after a terrible earthquake in Haiti in 2010, she urged people to give money to the program in a YouTube video. Meanwhile, Barrymore’s work on movies continued. In 2009, she became a director with the film Whip It. In the same year, she won the Golden Globe Award as an actress for her role in Grey Gardens. Drew Barrymore wears many different hats and works very long hours. What does she do in her free time? She spends time with the people she cares about. She says, “I don’t know what I’d do without my friends.”

【答案】24. D 25. C 26. D 27. B

根据文章中第三段“However, he stresses the essential elements to be classified as palace lanterns — hand-painted scenes and Chinese knots as decoration.(然而,他强调了被归类为宫灯的基本要素——手绘场景和作为装饰的中国结)”可知,宫廷灯笼的必要元素是手绘场景和中国结作为装饰。故选D。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章中第四段的描述“It requires the skills of a woodworker, the knowledge of a mechanic, an appreciation of classical architecture, poetry, painting and an additional talent for mortise-and-tenon joints (榫卯) by hand before they can create the right carvings and layer combinations. (这需要木工的技能,机械师的知识,对古典建筑、诗歌、绘画的欣赏,以及手工榫卯连接的额外天赋,然后他们才能创造出正确的雕刻和层组合)”可知,制作一个宫廷灯笼需要多方面的技能和知识,是一个要求很高的过程,因此选项C.Demanding(要求高的)正确。故选C。
【26题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“He particularly enjoys hosting workshops where he teaches people to make lanterns themselves.(他特别喜欢举办工作坊,教人们自己制作灯笼)”及下文“to see the smiles of children and the expressions of adults when they complete their works under his guidance. (看到孩子们的微笑和大人在他的指导下完成作品时的表情)”和常识可知,他很喜欢教人们自己制作灯笼,所以当看到看到孩子们的微笑和大人在他的指导下完成作品时的表情的时候,他应该是很高兴的。由此可知,划线词enchanted与选项D.Delighted(高兴的)意思一致。故选D。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一句““Wherever you are, when you see a palace lantern, you know there’s a connect ion to China,” Zhai says. (“无论你在哪里,只要看到宫灯,你就知道它与中国有联系,”翟说)”可知,翟玉良认为宫廷灯笼充当着与中国的文化纽带。故选B。

A. Spoil. B. Spot. C. Prohibit. D. Promote.
31. What may be the author’s opinion about the new taxes and laws?
A. They will lead to more crowded sites. B. The effect will die down.
C. They will encounter strong opposition. D. The trend will spread out.
【答案】28. A 29. B 30. C 31. D

根据首段最后一句“But the problem is that too many of us are visiting them at the same time, putting pressure on these delicate and ancient places.(但问题是太多游客在同一时间内参访这些旅游景点,给这些精致古老的地方带来巨大压力)”和第二段首句“That’s why a number of beauty spots and historic sites have been introducing charges or restrictions on the tourists who visit.(这就是为什么一些景点和历史遗迹已经开始对游客收费或限制)”可知,许多景点对游客收费或限制是为了缓解人们对美好和古老的地方的压力。故选A。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Many cities in Europe already charge an occupancy tax on tourists who stay in hotels and guest houses. In the UK, Edinburgh is hoping to do the same, controversially making it the first city in the country to do so.(欧洲许多城市已经对住在酒店和招待所的游客征收占用税。在英国,爱丁堡也希望这样做,它是英国第一个这样做的城市,这引起了争议)”可知,文章提及爱丁堡是为了再举一个旅游税的例子。故选B。
30题详解】
词义猜测题。根据后文“Rules include banning drinking water from fountains and attaching “love padlocks” to bridges.(规定包括禁止喝喷泉水和禁止往桥上挂爱情锁)”形成具体举例说明关系,再结合“bad tourist behavior, which some argue is spoiling the look and feel of the city.(游客的不良行为,一些人认为这破坏了城市的外观和感觉)”可以反推该短语为“禁止”的含义,所以选prohibit。故选C。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“As more of us can now afford to travel, global tourist destinations are going to get busier, so maybe new taxes and laws are going to be a necessary part of the sightseeing experience.(随着越来越多的人能够负担得起旅行,全球旅游目的地将变得更加繁忙,所以也许新的税收和法律将成为观光体验的必要部分)”可知,作者认为这一发展趋势将会被推广。故选D。

【答案】32. D 33. B 34. D 35. A

【答案】36. C 37. E 38. D 39. A 40. G

【答案】【参考范文】
Tara and her friends decided to make the most of their time instead of just having fun. Spotting the scattered litter along the way to their destination, Tara got a good idea, which was happily accepted by her fellows. Upon arriving at the beach, the youngsters were busy with the preparations. They bought some fabric bags and gloves and embarked on their fun-and-duty-filled journey. Their pre-planned fun activities were accompanied by fabric bags filled with the discarded waste they picked off the beach. The sun scorching their backs and sweat dropping down their faces, they didn’t stop their joyful and determined footsteps. Weaving fun with a sense of shared responsibility, their casual detour paved the way for a heartfelt commitment.
Back home, Tara didn’t let the lessons learnt from the museum fade away. She felt that her newfound wisdom should not be just confined to the seashore. Reviewing her past days and her time spent researching online, she organized her classmates to do voluntary work like cleaning up their community at weekends. The practices injected Tara with a renewed sense of self-belief and selflessness. The weekend getaway had sown seeds of change in her heart. She held firm to his spirit and embarked excitedly on her journey of self-discovery.
