In a popular video posted on TikTok by vane_kit on October 2, a golden dog could be seen having some difficulty with a plastic cone (圆锥头套) that had been placed around his head. The video showed Loui as he appeared to get stuck on the edge (边) of a door before he received some help from his owner to get free. He is seen walking over to the wall and once again seems to get stuck.
It was not clear why Loui needed the cone. Since being shared, the video has attracted more than 3 million views and about 396,400 likes. TikTok user Michaela Charley wrote: “When my dog had to wear her first cone, she just stood in one place looking at the wall all night.”
Joe Nutkins, a dog training instructor at Dog Training for Essex and Suffolk, said it was not surprising Loui appeared not to enjoy having to wear the cone. “The majority of dogs are not happy wearing a cone and it’s completely understandable, ” she said. “It adds weight to their neck and head, has a plastic smell right next to their nose, and makes drinking, eating and playing difficult. This discomfort is especially challenging for dogs when they wear a cone for the first time after an operation or when they are unwell.”
Nutkins said there are now many alternatives (可替代物) to plastic cones, such as inflatable (充气的) ones that do not get in the way of a dog’s face but still prevent it from reaching its wounds. But for those who are likely to use a plastic cone, Nutkins suggested slowly introducing your dog to one before it is needed and showing them how to take treats with one on.
4. What does the video show about Loui?
A. He had a broken cone on. B. He got injured by his cone.
C. He tried to remove his cone. D. He had trouble with his cone.
5. What did Charley mean by her words?
A. She doubted that Loui was ill. B. She understood Loui’s situation.
C. She was angry about her dog’s habits. D. She regretted not treating her dog well.
6. What does Nutkins think of Loui’s behavior?
A. it is perfectly normal. B. It may benefit his health.
C. It needs close observation. D. It is easy to misunderstand.
7. What does Nutkins suggest dog owners do with plastic cones?
A. Replace them with lighter ones. B. Take them off when feeding the dogs.
C. Train the dogs to get used to them. D. Choose the most suitable ones for their dogs.

Mosquitoes (蚊子) carry malaria (疟疾), which kills thousands of people each year. Now some researchers are trying to use genetic engineering (基因工程) to make them into partners in the fight against the disease.
For years, public health officials have tried to limit the disease by controlling mosquito populations. “But that approach is short-term,” says Anthony James, a professor of biology and genetics at the University of California, Irvine, “because mosquitoes are very tough little insects, and their populations can quickly increase.”
Therefore, James and his colleagues want to try a different approach: making mosquitoes themselves into malaria-fighting warriors, which is completely different from traditional ways of controlling malaria.
To understand how it works, it helps to understand the life cycle of malaria. The malaria pathogen (病原体) is a parasite (寄生虫) that grow inside humans. It’s passed via mosquitoes that move from person to person, sucking blood. “If we can make the mosquitoes difficult for the pathogens to survive, we can wipe out the disease,” he says. But making mosquitoes uninviting to malaria is a Herculean task.
To solve the problem, the team used a gene-editing technique called CRISPR. They started with genes from mice, whose immune systems do fight human malaria, engineered those genes, and then gave them to the mosquitoes.
It turned out the gene-edited mosquitoes worked very well. They reduced the number of parasites in the mosquito before they were passed to a human host.
James’ team are now working on planning a field trial, which he hopes could be done on an island or in another isolated location.
But genetically changing wild animals does not sit well with environmentalists. “There’s no need to engineer a mosquito,” says Dana Perls, senior program manager for the emerging technology program at the non-profit Friends of the Earth. Perls points out that natural ways to reduce malaria appear to be showing promise, as does a new vaccine (疫苗) against the disease. “Why take unnecessary risks and use mosquitoes that can’t be controlled once sent into the wild?” she asks.
8. What can we know from the second and third paragraphs?
A. Mosquitoes can reproduce quickly.
B. Mosquitoes can be easily controlled.
C. Mosquitoes have killed thousands of people.
D. Mosquitoes have been used to fight against malaria.
9. What does the underlined phrase “a Herculean task” in Para.4 mean?
A. A great comfort. B. A tough job. C. A narrow escape. D. A key factor.
10. What is environmentalists’ attitude towards this new approach?
A. Unconcerned. B. Positive. C. Negative. D. Unclear.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Preventing Malaria with a New Vaccine.
B. Curing Malaria with Gene-edited mosquitoes.
C. Limiting Malaria by Controlling Mosquito Populations
D. Controlling Malaria by Engineering Mosquitoes’ Genes

Since NASA’s Voyager I Spacecraft became the first humanmade object to cross into interstellar (星际的) space, scientists have studied decades of its data sent back to Earth from billions of miles away gaining insight into the mysteries of our universe. Now, a physicist and a flutist (长笛手) have transformed such waveform data of interstellar space into music fit more for a classical concert. The new piece of music was first played on 9 March, 2023.
The musical work charts (记录,跟踪) how Voyager I left the bubble around our sun and entered busy interstellar space. The melody (曲调), played by a solo flute, begins with smooth, connected notes at a lower register (声区) to illustrate the data from inside our solar system. A gradual increase in loudness follows to indicate the spacecraft crossing the heliopause, or the boundary that leads into interstellar space. Then the melody becomes very high and changes shape, with more jumps to describe the busy interstellar space environment.
“Understanding that is connected to what Voyager I was measuring, I think, adds another dimension (方面,维度) to what people are perceiving (理解).” said Domenico Vicinanza, a music composer and physicist, who created the piece. “It is different because the physics is different…something very, very dramatic changed.”
Alyssa Schwartz, an award-winning concert flutist, performed the piece from Voyager I data together with Vicinanza. But, sometimes, turning data into sound can lead to unreasonable musical tasks for a human to perform. For instance, the Voyager I piece has 37 measures (小节), and there is no place to rest or breathe until Measure 32. “I have learned that nature doesn’t care about my need to breathe,” joked Schwartz.
Schwartz said the music has pushed her technical development with complex cross fingerings and broad, difficult jump—patterns she hasn’t encountered anywhere else. “What’s interesting in this kind of music is that the composer that I’ m trying to relate is nature” Schwartz said. “I can’t rely on my knowledge of music theory or music history to try to inform the decision.”
12. What makes the creation of the new piece of music possible?
A. Musical instruments taken aboard the space shuttle.
B. A physicist’s great curiosity about the flute.
C. A flutist’s proper understanding of physics.
D. Data collected by a NASA spacecraft.
13. What does the new piece of music describe?
A. Voyager I journey into deep space.
B. The changes in the shape of the solar system.
C. A bubble’s gradual formation around the sun.
D. The sound of busy interstellar space environment.
14. What does the author want to show by mentioning “Measure 32”?
A. The musical work’s overall structure. B. The performance’s challenging nature.
C. Alyssa Schwartz’s remarkable musical skills. D. Domenico Vicnanza’s unreasonable demand.
15. What does Alysse Schwartz think of the new music piece?
A. It has some room to improve. B. It has educational significance.
C. It is hard for her to understand. D. It is a brand-new experience for her.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,共12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
When you eat is as important as what you eat for keeping a good weight, preventing and curing some diseases and living a long and happy life. We’re all familiar with our biological clocks that send out chemical signals at certain times to help us wake, sleep, and do other activities. ___16___ That is to sync (同步) our consumption (消耗) of food with chemical reactions in the body.
According to these clocks, the best way to eat is to consume more energy earlier in the day and less energy later in the day. But our bodies desire the opposite - more calories at the end of the day and fewer in the morning. This is a problem from a time when humans’ food supply was unreliable and storing energy was an advantage. ___17___ Studies in animals and humans have connected it with weight gain, diseases and aging.
So we need to change that food clock and eat in a way-more early, less inter-that allows food patterns in line with our biological clocks.
What are the guiding principles (原理) in this system of eating? A few changes to these eating habits will help sync up our internal systems. Two are especially important:
1. Limit your eating to when the sun shines-a window of about 12 hours or, better yet, fewer. ___18___
2. Eat more in the morning and midday and less later on. Your body will work best and it will be healthier if you store calories in advance rather than save them until later in the day, as many of us do.
People should learn how to do this day to day. ___19___ Our bodies change depending on what’s going on in our lives, so we may need to change when we eat to be at our best.
___20___ It will help prevent diseases and even control diseases. Following this plan can result in all kinds of improvements to your quality of life: better sleep, more energy--and just overall better health.
A. That means cutting out nighttime food.
B. Here is the science behind your eating habits.
C. What benefits can we get from eating this way?
D. But we also should define “when” another way.
E. We also have a food clock with a similar purpose.
F. Today this kind of food clock has negative effects on our health.
G. Healthy food and regular eating habits can help you live longer.

【答案】
Dear John,
I am very glad to hear that you are going to introduce high school students’ campus life with short videos.
I’d like you to recommend something to shoot. First of all, I recommend the video of students’ morning exercise to you. I think students’ morning exercise is very important, which affects their mental outlook of the day. Then there are videos of students in class. This is also the most critical period for students, which can show their learning status. Last but not least, there are various extracurricular activities for students. Extracurricular activities discover and develop students’ interests and hobbies.
Finally, I wish your program a success.
Yours,
Li Hua
