There was once a donkey who had lived and worked on a farm for many years. When she got old, she became too tired to carry heavy loads. "You're no use here anymore," said the farmer to the donkey. "I must find a new job, so I can feed my belly," the donkey said. "I will go to Bremen Town, as I've always wanted to work as a musician. I will play my guitar." On her way to Bremen Town, the donkey met a friendly old dog, resting in the grass. "How are you?" asked the donkey. "Not well, I'm afraid," said the dog. "Now that I'm old, I want to rest all day, and my owner says I'm in her way. She hollered at me to scat, and said not to come back. Now what will I do?" "Come with us to Bremen Town," said the donkey. "We are going to work as musicians. I will play guitar, and my friend the dog will play the drum. What will you play?" "I will shake my tambourine," said the cat. "I've always wanted to play in a band." Together, they continued on their way. The donkey, the dog, and the cat met a rooster, who was crowing a beautiful, sad song. "Why do you sing such a sad song, rooster?" asked the donkey. "This may be my last day to sing," said the rooster. "The cook has said that she will put me in the soup tomorrow! What will I do?" "Come with us to Bremen Town," said the donkey. "We are going to work as musicians. I will play guitar, the dog will play the drum, and the cat will play tambourine. With a voice like yours, you'll be terrific in our band." "Thank you," said the rooster, smiling. "I've always wanted to sing in a band." Together, they continued on their way. When night came, the animal friends grew tired, hungry, and cold. They saw a little house that looked like a cozy place to rest. "I wonder if anyone is home," said the donkey. "Let's investigate." "Oh, my!" the donkey said. She was very surprised by what she saw. "The house is warm and comfortable, and I smell a hearty stew cooking on the fire. But we have a problem. The house is full of robbers!" The donkey, the dog, the cat, and the rooster came up with a brilliant plan. The dog climbed on top of the donkey. The cat climbed on top of the dog. The rooster perched on top of the cat. Then they made a mighty noise. "Ee-aw! Woof! Meoow! Cock-a-doodle-doooo!" The robbers heard the loud noise and looked out the window. "It's a terrible monster!" one robber said. "Run!" said another. The frightened robbers ran away as fast as their feet could take them. Just then, the family that lived in the house returned to see the robbers fleeing. "You saved our home!" the people said. They invited the animals in for stew to say thanks. The animals then treated the people to a concert, and the family loved hearing their sweet music. "Please stay here with us!" they said.
