My parents always encouraged me at that time. As a firefighter, you’re constantly thinking of other people and trying to help them. It’s the mindset. which is the most difficult part in this job! One night I was heading home and decided to stop off at a burrito (玉米饼) place. I was approached by a homeless man. He was very dirty and obviously hungry. He asked me for some change to buy a little food. As I was pulling some change out, I had an idea. I decided to see if he wanted to eat a real dinner, so I asked him to follow me back into the Burrito Joint to order. When he followed me in, the people behind the counter refused to let him in. After some arguing, so I had to encourage him to order whatever and however much he wanted. He ended up ordering enough to fill his stomach at least 3 times over! For someone who has been on the edges of society it seemed like he was very surprised at my kind behaviour. But to me, it was what any “human being” should do or at least offer. I know we see these people every day asking for money but you had to be there to see the look in his face. To me, it reminded me when I was young and my mum brought out a big birthday cake for me on my birthday, with all the candy, getting to experience a big meal. And I think he felt special, like he was getting attention. Again something that I could see he hadn’t experienced in a long time. I often think about this story, because to me it’s not just about helping someone out by feeding them, but giving him the respect of being a human being and allowing him to feel good about himself was very rewarding. 4. Why does the writer want to be a firefighter? A. To help others. B. To be famous. C To realize his parents’s dream. D. To meet the challenge. 5. How did the people behind the counter treat the homeless man? A. They led him into the Burrito Joint politely. B. They welcomed him but treated him in cold. C. They shut the door in his face. D. They laughed at his dirty clothes. 6. What do the last two paragraphs tell us? A. The man felt guilty about the writer’s generous giving. B. The birthday cake reminded the writer to do a good deed. C. We should be careful of the people who would ask for money. D. The dinner not only satisfied the man’s hunger, but gave him the respect. 7. What’s the best title for the text? A. A Homeless Man B. A Meaningful Dinner C. To Be a Firefighter D. An Unforgettable Man 【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7. 根据第一段中“Back in the day when I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life, I liked to help others, so I was studying to become a firefighter. (在我不确定自己想要做什么的时候,我喜欢帮助别人,所以我正在学习成为一名消防员。)”可知,作者之所以想要成为一名消防员,是因为作者喜欢帮助别人。故选A。 根据第三段中“When he followed me in, the people behind the counter refused to let him in(当他跟着我进去时,柜台后面的人拒绝让他进去)”可知,当无家可归人跟着作者进入Burrito Joint时,柜台后面的工作人员拒绝让他进入,C选项“They shut the door in his face.( 他们当着他的面把门关上了。)” 根据最后一段“I often think about this story, because to me it’s not just about helping someone out by feeding them, but giving him the respect of being a human being and allowing him to feel good about himself was very rewarding.( 我经常想起这个故事,因为对我来说,这不仅仅是通过喂养来帮助别人,而是给予他作为一个人的尊重,让他对自己感觉良好,这是非常有益的。)” B。 C As reported in the journal Nature, one system can directly remove carbon dioxide from sources ranging from flue gas (烟道气) to the atmosphere by using electricity to induce a water-and-oxygen-based electrochemical reaction. This technological achievement could turn direct air capture (捕获) from edge industry into a promising front for climate change relief. Most carbon-capture systems involve a two-step process: First, high-pH liquids are used to separate the carbon dioxide, which is acidic, from mixed-gas streams such as flue gas. Next, the carbon dioxide is regenerated from the solution through heating or by injecting a low-pH liquid. “Once the carbon dioxide is trapped in these solvents (溶剂), you have to regenerate it,” says Haotian Wang, assistant professor at Rice University. “There are literally no chemicals produced or consumed with our process. We also don’t need to heat up or pressurize our device, we just need to put it into a power outlet and it will work.” Another drawback of current carbon-capture technologies is their reliance on large-scale, centralized infrastructure. By contrast, the system developed in the Wang lab is an extensible, modular, point-of-use concept that can adapt to a variety of scenarios. “The technology can be scaled up to industrial settings-power plants, chemical plants-but the great thing about it is that it allows for small-scale use as well: I can even use it in my office.” Wang says. Also the reactor can continuously remove carbon dioxide from a simulated (模拟的) flue gas with efficiency above 98% using a relatively low electricity input. Wang notes that the process has “no carbon footprint or a very limited footprint” if powered by electricity from renewable sources such as solar or wind. “This is great news considering that renewablel electricity is becoming more and more cost-effective,” Wang says. 8. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 2? A. Add up some opposite reasons. B. Offer basic evidences to the topic. C. Summarize the following paragraphs. D. Provide some background information. 9. What do we know about Wang’s system according to the text? A. It involves a two-step process. B. It creates some chemicals. C. It is simple and easy to operate. D. It needs to be used in big plants. 10. How does the author support the topic? A. By making comparisons. B. By listing many numbers. C. By providing research results. D. By analyzing causes and effects. 11. What is the author’s attitude towards Wang’s technology? A. Unclear. B. Favourable. C. Objective. D. Disapproving. B 9. C 10. A 11. 根据第二段“Most carbon-capture systems involve a two-step process: First, high-pH liquids are used to separate the carbon dioxide, which is acidic, from mixed-gas streams such as flue gas. Next, the carbon dioxide is regenerated from the solution through heating or by injecting a low-pH liquid. (大多数碳捕获系统包括两个步骤:首先,使用高ph值液体从混合气流(如烟道气)中分离酸性二氧化碳。接下来,二氧化碳通过加热或注入低ph值液体从溶液中再生。)”可知,在第2段中,作者解释了目前的碳捕获过程,包括两个步骤和这个过程的缺点由此凸显出本文中最新的碳捕系统的优点,由此第二段目的在于为主题提供基本证据。故选B。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“There are literally no chemicals produced or consumed with our process. We also don’t need to heat up or pressurize our device, we just need to put it into a power outlet and it will work. (我们的生产过程中不产生或消耗任何化学物质。我们也不需要加热或加压我们的设备,我们只需要把它放在电源插座上,它就会工作。)”可知,使用该方法不需要不产生或消耗任何化学物质,也不需要加热或者加压,只需要插上电源即可工作,因此操作简单,操作方便。故选C。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中“Another drawback of current carbon-capture technologies is their reliance on large-scale, centralized infrastructure. By contrast, the system developed in the Wang lab is an extensible, modular, point-of-use concept that can adapt to a variety of scenarios. (当前碳捕获技术的另一个缺点是它们依赖于大规模的集中式基础设施。相比之下,Wang实验室开发的系统是一个可扩展的、模块化的、使用点的概念,可以适应各种场景。)”可知,作者是通过作比较的方式,指出了Wang实验室开发的系统即通过作比较支撑文章的主题。故选A。 根据最后一段中“Wang notes that the process has “no carbon footprint or a very limited footprint” if powered by electricity from renewable sources such as solar or wind. “This is great news considering that renewable electricity is becoming more and more cost-effective,” Wang says. (Wang指出如果使用太阳能或风能等可再生能源供电,该过程“没有碳足迹或碳足迹非常有限”。王说:“考虑到可再生电力正变得越来越划算,这是一个好消息。”)”可知,如果考虑可再生电力等再生能源进行供电实施该技术,整个过程中“没有碳足迹或碳足迹非常有限”,这对环境来说是极其友好的,由此推断,作者对该技术的态度是赞同的。故选B。 D Around 3,500 Americans ingest (摄入) batteries every year. It’s apparently such a repeating issue that even a specific hotline was built in the event of such an emergency. And while it’s unlikely your wristwatch’s power source will ever be safe to eat, that doesn’t mean all batteries will remain uneatable-in fact, some are being designed with digestion specifically in mind. A team of researchers at the Italian Institute of Technology recently revealed what isl being called as the world’s first fully rechargeable, eatable battery. As detailed in a paper published with Advanced Materials, the new device has made good use of some eatable materials. “Eatable electronic devices will have major implications for gastrointestinal tract (胃肠道) monitoring, treatment, as well as rapid food quality monitoring,” reads the paper’s abstract, adding that although recent research proved the feasibility of eatable sensors and circuits, “fully eatable electronic devices and eatable power sources are still required, of which there have been very few examples.” According to the team’s findings, their proof-of-concept battery was capable of producing 0.65 volts, which is safely low enough for the human body to handle. The ingestible could provide 48 μA of current for 12 minutes, or alternatively, a few microamps (微安) for over an hour. Such a power supply could provide enough energy for small electronics alike to eatable pill-shaped modules and other gastrointestinal procedure alternatives. In a statement, researcher coordinator Mario Caironi explained that such a product could help power monitors for both human health conditions and food storage. Additionally, given their safety, products with stronger power could be used within children’s toys, where ingestion risk is higher. In the team’s statement, co-author Ivan Ilic also explained that despite the battery’s relatively low power, its digestibility provides a promising example of a battery that doesn’t use any harmful materials. 12. What is the necessity of developing eatable batteries? A. They help with the food shortage. B. They can avoid the harm caused by eating batteries. C. They are useful in some special fields. D. They have no impact on the environment. 13. Which is the closest in meaning to “feasibility” in Paragraph 4? A. Availability. B. Flexibility. C. Responsibility. D. Possibility. 14. What can we infer from the statements in the last paragraph? A. The application of the battery has a long way to go. B. The eatable batteries will be widely used in our life. C. The development of the eatable battery is promising. D. The eatable batteries will soon be put into production. 15. In which section of a magazine can we read the text? A. News Corner. B. Story Garden. C. Language World. D. Technology Square. 12. B 13. D 14. C 15. It’s apparently such a repeating issue that even a specific hotline was built in the event of such an emergency.(每年大约有3500名美国人摄入电池。 以及后文“fully eatable electronic devices and eatable power sources are still required, of which there have been very few examples(完全可食用的电子设备和可食用电源仍然是必需的,这方面的例子很少。)” 根据最后一段中“In the team’s statement, co-author Ivan Ilic also explained that despite the battery’s relatively low power, its digestibility provides a promising example of a battery that doesn’t use any harmful materials.(在研究小组的声明中,共同作者Ivan Ilic还解释说,尽管电池的功率相对较低,但其可消化性为不使用任何有害材料的电池提供了一个有希望的例子。)” World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5th, is a global event that encourages action for the protection of our environment. Established by the United Nations in1974, it has become a platform for the public in over 100 countries. ____16____ Here are four simple ways you can care for your environment. ●Reduce, Reuse, Recycle The principle “reduce, reuse, recycle” is important. ____17____ Reduce: Be mindful of your consumption. Use products with minimal packaging and consider if you truly need that new item. Reuse: Think of creative ways to repurpose items. Recycle: Make sure to recycle paper, plastics, metals, and electronics. ●Conserve water Water is a precious resource, and conserving it helps ensure its availability for future generations. A dripping faucet can waste gallons of water over time so ensure all taps, pipes, and toilets are leak-free. ____18____ ●Choose sustainable transportation Transportation is a significant source of greenhouse gases. Opting for more sustainable modes of transport can make a big difference. ____19____ Also consider buses, trains, or carpooling to reduce the vehicles on the road. Consider investing in an electric vehicle, which has a lower environmental impact compared to traditional cars. ●____20____ This step helps reduce your carbon footprint and promotes sustainable agriculture. Local products travel shorter distances to reach you, reducing transportation emissions. Plus, organic farming practices reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers, promoting soil health. Small, consistent actions can lead to significant benefits. Remember, every action counts ,and together we can create a more sustainable future. A. Support local and organic products B. For short distances, consider walking or cycling. C. Improve air quality and provide habitats for wildlife. D. This year, we focus on everyday steps that anyone can take. E. Daniel was nine, and I was eleven. My dad and my mother were all teachers at the same school. At one point during the year, my brother began to complain that a boy named John was picking on him. John is an eleven-year-old boy. He and I were both in my dad’s class. He was the type of kid who always seemed to be in trouble. What’s worse, he didn’t consider that it was his behaviour that was the problem, but instead decided my dad was picking on him. He often picked on my brother by knocking off his hat, calling his name, kicking him and running away. When my mum heard about the problem, she came home from town a few days later with a bag of candies. “These are for John,” she told Daniel and me. “For whom?” “For John. ”Mum went on to explain how an enemy could be conquered (战胜) by kindness. It was hard for any of us to imagine being kind to John. But the next week we went to Pioneer Clubs with candies in our pockets — one for ourselves and one for John. As I was heading to my class, I overheard Daniel saying, “Here John, this is for you.” When we got home, I asked what John’s response had been. Daniel shrugged (耸肩) “He just looked surprised, then he said thank you and ate it.” The next week when John came running over, Daniel held on to his hat and got himself ready for an attack. But John didn’t touch him. He only asked, “Hey, Daniel, do you have any more candies?” After that, John found him every week and asked for a candy, and most times Daniel remembered to bring them — one for himself, and one for John. At the same time, I “conquered my enemy” in another way. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ It has been a long time since John picked on my brother last time. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】At the same time, I “conquered my enemy” in another way. One time I met John in the hall. Before he started to open his mouth, I said, “Hi, John!” and gave him a big smile before he had a chance to speak. Surprised, he shut his mouth, and I walked on. From then on, whenever I saw him, I would greet him with a smile and say, “Hi, John!” before he had a chance to say anything rude. Instead, he started to simply return the greeting. It has been a long time since John picked on my brother last time. And he’s not rude to me anymore, either. Even my dad is impressed with the change in him. “He’s a nicer John now than he was a year ago. I guess because someone finally gave him a chance,” says my dad. He wasn’t the only one to change. My whole family learned what it meant to love an enemy. What’s strange is that in the process, we lost that enemy — he was “conquered” by love. 词汇激活 行为类 ①打招呼:greet/say hello to ②微笑:smile/grin ③改变:change/transform 情绪类 ①惊讶:surprised/astonished ②粗鲁的:rude/impolite/uncourteous 【点睛】[高分句型1] Before he started to open his mouth, I said, “Hi, John!” and gave him a big smile before he had a chance to speak.(运用了从属连词before引导时间状语从句) [高分句型2] From then on, whenever I saw him, I would greet him with a smile and say, “Hi, John!” before he had a chance to say anything rude.(运用了whenever引导的让步状语从句和before引导时间状语从句) [高分句型3] He’s a nicer John now than he was a year ago. B Back in the day when I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life, I liked to help others, so I was studying to become a firefighter. C. To realize his parents’s dream. An Unforgettable Man C As reported in the journal Nature, one system can directly remove carbon dioxide from sources ranging from flue gas (烟道气) to the atmosphere by using electricity to induce a water-and-oxygen-based electrochemical reaction. C It is simple and easy to operate. D. It needs to be used in big plants. 10. How does the author support the topic? A. By making comparisons. B. By listing many numbers. C. By providing research results. D. By analyzing causes and effects. 11. What is the author’s attitude towards Wang’s technology? A. Unclear. B. Favourable. C. Objective. D. Disapproving. D Around 3,500 Americans ingest (摄入) batteries every year. In a statement researcher coordinator Mario Caironi explained that such a product could help power monitors for both human health conditions and food storage. World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5th, is a global event that encourages action for the protection of our environment. Established by the United Nations in1974, it has become a platform for the public in over 100 countries. ____16____ Here are four simple ways you can care for your environment. ●Reduce Reuse, Recycle The principle “reduce, reuse, recycle” is important. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
