教学实施过程:
1. Have students read the life story again and fill in the box in part A on page 6.
Answer: ... by then he had learned very little English.
... by the age of 25, he had become a publisher.
He used the same business strategy he had employed ...
2. Have students finish “Working out the rules” on page 6.
• We often use the past perfect tense to talk about something that happened (1) before
(before/after) a past time.
• The verb form of the past perfect tense is “(2) had (have/had) done”.
3. Have students go through “Grammar notes” on page 98. Give explanations if necessary.
1)过去完成时用来描述过去某一时间之前发生的动作或存在的状态。如:
He had tried his best although he failed. It surprised me that she had been out of work for a year.
2)过去完成时有时用来表示没有实现的愿望,主要用于 want、hope、intend 等词。
如: I had wanted to help you, but I was too busy then.
3) 过去完成时可以用于 hardly ... when ... 或 no sooner ... than ... 等结构,表示“一……
就……”。如:I had hardly entered the classroom when the bell rang. No sooner had he got

4)过去完成时常有 by、when 等引导的时间状语作为标志。如: I had finished reading
the novel by the end of last week. He had learnt English for ten years when he graduated
from high school.
5)如果 before 引导时间状语从句,主句可用一般过去时代替过去完成时;如果 after
引导时间状语从句,从句可用一般过去时代替过去完成时。如: John (had) left before I
came home. He began to write a review after he (had) watched the film twice.
4. Have students finish B1 on page 7.

Zou Taofen was a famous Chinese journalist and publisher. He was born in 1895, in
Fujian. He graduated from university at the age of twenty-six, in 1921. The next year, he
became an editor. By the time he was 31, Zou Taofen had become the chief editor of Life
Weekly. In 1931, he started campaigning against the Japanese invasion. By the time he was
40, he had started a new journal called Life of the Masses. Zou had established himself as a
famous journalist and publisher before he died in Shanghai in 1944.
