教学难点:introduce the types of mass media they usually use in daily life

教学方法:Group work, discussion
教学实施过程:
1. Have students discuss the topic of mass media by answering the following two questions.
(1) Do you think the mass media is important in your daily life? Why or why not?
Option 1: Yes, I think the mass media is very important. From watching the news and
communicating with friends to searching for information and entertainment, almost
everything we do, we do it on the mass media. In fact, I think life would be boring and
limited if we lived in a world without the mass media.
Option 2: No, I do not think the mass media is that important. I use the mass media to
search for information or to watch films and television programmes. But I prefer chatting
with my friends face to face or going out to the park to enjoy the beauty of nature. The
mass media is just a tool and is not necessary for everything.
(2) What does the quote from William Bernbach mean?
In my opinion, the quote indicates that the mass media has greatly changed our lives and
society. On the one hand, we should take advantage of what the mass media offers us. On
the other hand, we ought to use it properly so as not to become addicted to it.
2. Have students watch the video and fill in the blanks on page 1.
Answer: Print; Digital

3. Have students answer the two questions on page 1.
1) What else do you know about the types of mass media mentioned above?
I know that outdoor media is still quite popular but is becoming more digital and
interactive. Print media seems to be on the decline as most people now prefer to search
online for news and information. Many newspapers, magazines and books are now available
online too. Broadcast signals, like those of television and radio, can be transmitted by cable
or satellite. I also know that digital media is growing very fast and is having a greater
influence on society than any other type of media.
2) What types of mass media do you usually rely on for information and entertainment?
I usually read news on my phone so I can get the most up-to-date information every day.
Sometimes I also watch the news on television with my parents at dinner time. For
entertainment, I like to watch films and listen to music using my computer or smartphone. I
also like chatting with my friends on smartphone apps or online forums.
Video script:
Narrator: The term “mass media” was used for the first time during the 1920s. It refers to
the sources of information and news that reach a large audience. However, the mass media
existed long before the term was used and over time different types of media have developed.
Take a walk through the city shops and you won’t be able to find a view without outdoor
media, which is one of the earliest forms of mass communication. Outdoor media has been
around since ancient times. All shop signs, posters, and other advertisements outside
buildings and inside shop windows are forms of outdoor media.
Another early form of mass communication is print media, which gained its foothold in
distribution to the masses with the invention of printing. Continued improvements over
the centuries allowed books, magazines and newspapers to be printed in large quantities.
