But you probably didn’t know that these other famous movies also came from books. Hidden Figures This film told the story of real-life Katherine Johnson and other female African-American mathematicians who helped drive the United States into space in the 1960s. It was actually based on a 2016 non-fiction book and the movie did boost sales of the book. Forrest Gump The 1994 movie which was based on the book by Winston Groom won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for the star Tom Hanks. Although the movie’s critical and box-office success gave the book a huge boost, it’s the film that made its mark on pop culture history. The Girl on the Train Paula Hawkin’s psychological thriller, about a woman on a train who thinks she sees something strange out of the window, was a huge success. But unlike the fast—paced, can’t-be-put-down quality of the novel, the movie was boring. Field of Dreams It’s hard to describe the plot of this movie: Ray Kinsella hears a voice telling him to build a baseball field in his Iowa cornfield, and what happens next explores the themes of lost dreams, childhood heroes, and healing the pain of the past. The 1989 movie is based on W. P. Kinsella’s 1982 original, Shoeless Joe, but cuts out some extra characters. 1. Which is the best choice for a person who loves math? A. Hidden Figures. B. Forrest Gump. C. The Girl on the Train. D. Field of Dreams. 2. Who has won the Academy Award for Best Actor according to the text? A. Tom Hanks. B. Winston Groom. C. Paula Hawkin. D. W. P. Kinsella. 3. What is special about Field of Dreams? A. It is a romantic comedy. B. It presents several themes. C. It shows all the figures in Shoeless Joe. D. It was released in 1982 for the first time. B After months of staring at the news about the refugee crisis (难民危机) in disbelief last year, a few friends and I decided to use our interests and skills to take action. We organized a cycle trip from London to Athens to raise money for a refugee community centre in Athens. It went really well. We had 43 cyclists taking part in the activity and we managed to raise£48,000, which is enough to pay for the rent and electricity for an entire year. This spring, we’ re planning on doing it all again with the aim of raising the same amount of money, to continue to provide refugees with their rent money so as to keep such an amazing project running on. Every part of this project, the cycling and charity (慈善), is a positive response to the refugee crisis. The cycling is an amazing and challenging experience, and makes fund- raising a positive, energetic activity rather than an ordinary trip. And all over Greece, the cooperatives, who are running the community centre, provide not only basic needs such as free food and warm clothing, but also services including education and childcare. Besides, they also providea safe space for refugees to build relationships and relax, creating perhaps the first enjoyable and happy space that refugees have been provided with, and that refugees have been able to co- create on their journey. Yes, the situation is still disheartening and it is still mostly unsolved, but that’s not where we should leave things. In a world with sad news from the media, I feel it is really important to remind ourselves that there are positive responses from us, and that the skills we use to respond can be varied and creative. I wouldn’t have paired cycling and the refugee crisis together before having had this idea! Whatever your interests and skills are, put them to good use, make them work for this crisis and create positive change! 4. How was the author’s cycle trip last year? A. It was a test of his skills. B. It proved to be interesting. C. It lived up to expectations. D. It was harder than expected. 5. Which can best describe the cooperatives? A. Kind. B. Confident. C. Unconcerned. D. Strong. 6. What does the underlined word “disheartening” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Abnormal. B. Different. C. Astonishing. D. Depressing. 7. What does the author call on us to do? A. Make positive personal change. B. Take part in the cycling activity. C. Do something for the refugee crisis. D. Develop our interests in our daily life. C We spend much time sharing images, videos or thoughts on social networks such as Instagram and Twitter. Now, a group of researchers are developing an algorithm(算法) that can identify the basic needs of users from the text and images they share on social networks. The experts hope doctors can identify people’s negative emotions by using this tool. According to William Glasser’s Choice Theory, there are five basic needs that are central to all human behavior: Survival, Power, Freedom, Belonging and Fun. These needs even have an influence on the images we choose to upload to our social networks. “How we present ourselves on social media can provide useful information about behavior, personalities, viewpoints, motives and needs,” explained Mohammad Mahdi Dehshibi, who led this study within the AI for Human Well-being group. The research team spent two years working on a deep learning model that identifies the five needs described by Glasser, using data such as images, text and locations. Drawing on neural (神经系统的) networks and databases, the experts trained the algorithm to identify the content of thousands of images and comments. Glasser’s theory says that each choice we make does not respond to just one basic need, so the multi- label approach of this study is useful in clearing up this doubt. Dehshibi uses an example to explain this, “Imagin e that a cyclist is riding up a mountain, and at the top, he can choose between sharing a selfie and a group photo. If he chooses the selfie, we sense a need for power, but if he chooses the other option, we can conclude that the person is not only looking for fun but also a way to satisfy his need for belonging.” In training the algorithm, researchers aim to identify those who could be struggling with unhappiness. This work could possibly improve preventive measures for people suffering from unhappiness — which is commonly increased by social media usage — ranging from identification to improved treatment when a person has been diagnosed(诊断) with a mental health problem. 8. How can the algorithm benefit users of social networks? A. By recording the time they spend online. B. By recommending useful text and images to them. C. By offering them a better platform to share feelings. D. By helping discover their possible mental health problems. 9. What is the role of Glasser’s Choice Theory in creating the algorithm? A. It makes the algorithm reliable. B. It explains the disadvantages of the algorithm. C. It provides a theoretical basis for the algorithm. D. It greatly speeds up the process of the algorithm. 10. What does Dehshibi’s example suggest? A. Group activities can help people deal with stress. B. Natural scenery affects people’s choice of images. C. Different basic needs can be reflected in one choice. D. Social media can hardly satisfy people’s basic needs. 11. What does the text mainly talk about? A. The disadvantages of posting images online. B. An algorithm for satisfying basic human needs. C. An algorithm for detecting unhappiness on social networks. D. Ways to improve the mental health of social network users. D Palm oil (棕榈油) is the world’s most popular vegetable oil, found in half of all supermarket goods and seven out of every ten personal care products. It’s also used in some snacks, cleaning powder, and toothpaste. Since 2016, global palm oil consumption has risen 73 percent. Yet palm oil and the appetite for it are problematic. The clearing of forests to make way for oil palm plantations is a major driver of the cutting down of trees in the hottest part of the world: Between 1972 and 2015, the world’s two largest palm oil-producing nations, Indonesia and Malaysia, lost 16 percent and 47 percent of their forests, respectively, to the crop. And that brings about environmental problems, such as climate change, and poor water quality. Biodiversity suffers a severe blow, too. However, a better option may be just around the corner: oil made from microbes (微生物). “The technology is actually very old but was never really established in industry, and I always wondered why because it has great potential (潜力),” says Philipp Arbter, co-founder of Colipi, an emerging startup that grows and adapts microbes to produce palm oil. For instance, he says, “Microbes can be grown quickly in a climate-controlled indoor space to produce high amounts of oil. We have so far identified more than 40 algae (藻类) and 70 other microbes which are rich in oil.” Currently, most microbial oil startups are aiming for their first products to be in beauty products, rather than food, due to the higher price points they can get and the relatively fewer rules involved. When asked if the new oil can match palm oil prices, especially when it’s used in food, Christoph Chuck, a chemical engineer at the University of Bath in England, said, “We should be in touching distance of the eatable oil market as long as mass production happens to bring the price down.” 12. What does the first paragraph show about palm oil? A. It is widely used. B. It is easily available. C. It makes the food taste better. D. It has taken the lead in the oil market. 13. Why does the author mention Indonesia and Malaysia in paragraph 2? A. To stress the importance of palm oil. B. To present the growth environment of palm trees. C. To show the high price of producing palm oil. D. To explain the challenge of planting cash crops. 14. What makes Philipp Arbter turn to microbial oil? A. Its high quality as eatable oil. B. The sufficient source of materials. C. Its benefits for human health. D. The successful practice in industry. 15. How does Christopher Chuck feel about the future of microbial oil? A. Unconcerned. B. Confused. C. Worried. D. Optimistic. It is essential to have good eating habits. The atmosphere during the three-hour bus journey was filled with anticipation as the group of forty-eight young teenagers thought of nothing but victory. However, the excitement turned into shock as our kids got off the bus and stared in disbelief at their muscle-filled Greek-god-like opponents. The coach checked the schedule “Surely there has been a mistake,” he thought. But the schedule only confirmed that this was the right location and time. The two teams formed a line on the side of the pool. Whistles blew, races were started and races were lost. Haifway through the meet, coach Huey realized that there were no participants for one of the events. “Okay kids, who want to swim the five-hundred-yard freestyle?” the coach asked. Several bands shot up, including Justin’s “I’ll race, coach!” he shouted. The coach looked down at the youngest boy and said, “Justin, this race covers twenty lengths of the pool. I’ve only seen you swum eight”. “I can do it. Coach. Let me try,” Justin insisted . Coach Huey hesitantly agreed. ”After all, “be thought,” it’s not the winning but the effort and determination that build character.“ The whistle blew and the opponents rushed through the water and finished the race in just six minutes and fifty seconds. The winners gathered on the sidelines to socialize while our group struggled to finish. After three more minutes. the last exhausted (筋疲力尽的) members of our team came out from the water-except for Justin. Justin was stealing breaths as his hands slapped against the water, pushing i: aside to push his thin body forward. It appeared that he might go under at any minute, yet something seemed to keep pushing him forward. “Why doesn’t the coach intervene?” the parents whispered among themselves. “It looks like he’s about to drown, and the race was over four minutes ago.” Approaching Justin, the coach noticed the determination in the young swimmer’s eyes. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Touched by the scene, members of the opposing team also cheered Justin as he continued to swim. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力1—5 BCCBC 6—10 BCAAC 11—15 CACBC 16—20 CCAAB 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2024—2025学年度第一学期月考(1) 高二英语 注意事项: 1. 1. C 5. A 6. D 7. 根据第一段“It went really well. We had 43 cyclists taking part in the activity and we managed to raise£48,000, which is enough to pay for the rent and electricity for an entire year. Besides, they also providea safe space for refugees to build relationships and relax, creating perhaps the first enjoyable and happy space that refugees have been provided with, and that refugees have been able to co-create on their journey. 根据最后一段“Whatever your interests and skills are, put them to good use, make them work for this crisis and create positive change! (无论你的兴趣和技能是什么,好好利用它们,让它们为这场危机发挥作用,创造积极的变化!)”可知,作者呼吁我们为难民危机做点什么。故选C。 C We spend much time sharing images, videos or thoughts on social networks such as Instagram and Twitter. D It greatly speeds up the process of the algorithm. 8. D 9. C 10. C 11. B. Confused. C. Worried. D. Optimistic. 12. A 13. C 14. B 15. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 Approaching Justin, the coach noticed the determination in the young swimmer’s eyes. Despite the obvious fatigue and the passing of the race’s official end, Justin refused to give up. His strokes were slower, his breaths labored, but he kept pushing forward, determined to finish what he had started. Coach Huey realized that Justin’s effort was more than just a race; it was a demonstration of courage and perseverance. He knew he couldn’t let Justin finish alone. Touched by the scene, members of the opposing team also cheered Justin as he continued to swim. They clapped and shouted, encouraging him to finish the race. The parents, too, were moved by Justin’s resilience, and their whispers of concern turned to shouts of praise. Finally, with a last gasp of effort, Justin touched the wall, completing his five-hundred-yard freestyle. The crowd erupted in applause as he emerged from the water, exhausted but victorious in his own way. Coach Huey smiled proudly, knowing that Justin had not only finished the race but had also grown as a person in the process. 词汇激活 行为类 ①出现:emerge/show up ②意识到:realize/be aware of ③完成:finish/complete/accomplish 情绪类 ①疲惫:exhausted /tired ②勇气:courage/braveness 【点睛】[高分句型1] His strokes were slower, his breaths labored, but he kept pushing forward, determined to finish what he had started.
