Christmas is coming, and it is time to warm yourself and head out to see some festive lights. There are plenty of choices when it comes to following a light path as part of your Christmas celebrations.
Oxford Street
Oxford Street’s festive lights are a treat for the eyes this year. However you’ll have to pick your hours carefully as the lights — which we returned on at the start of November — are only on for eight hours a day this year, from 3 — 11 p. m., in the wake of the rising energy costs the country is facing. It is expected this will reduce energy usage by up to two thirds compared to previous years, when the lights have been on for 24 hours through November and December.
Kew Garden
One of the most famous light paths of the season, Christmas at Kew offers a full-on festive experience with over 2 km of lights to walk through. Along the way you’ll have the chance to sample festive food and drink, and possibly even say hello to Santa himself.
Regent Street
Regent Street’s lights are on the theme of The Spirit Of Christmas this year, bringing golden angels to the shopping street. The lights, which cover Regent Street and the St James neighbourhoods, were turned on on November 9, and like the Oxford St lights are turned on between 3 and 11 p. m.
Covent Garden
A visit to Covent Garden will certainly get you in the festive spirit this year, with the central London destination offering a whole lot of lights — from 11 a. m. until midnight every day until January 3. Visitors can also enjoy daily snow showers as well as festive food treats and heated wine — with over 40 different varieties there.

A. The quality of these lights is not good.
B. The public don’t like these lights.
C. The country expects to differ from previous years.
D. The government wants to save energy.
2 In which place do the lights mainly focus on The Spirit of Christmas?
A Kew Gardens. B. Oxford Street.
C. Covent Garden. D. Regent Street.
3. What can visitors do when visiting Covent Garden?
A. See snow day and night. B. Take a shower.

Tina Leverton was 62 when she bought her first pair of ballet shoes. She said putting her feet into the soft leather was very emotional. She said, “I’ve waited a long time for it.”
A few days later, Leverton took her first ballet class after seeing an advertisement in a newspaper. It showed older women dancing in a class near Leverton’s house. “As I came in the door, I found a big smile on my face. From the minute I started, I felt like coming home.”
Leverton had longed to dance as a child. Sadly, her parents couldn’t afford ballet classes, for they were first-generation Indian immigrants, struggling to make a living in the UK. Her father was a train driver on the underground in London and her mother held two cleaning jobs. However, she harboured her dream of being a ballerina
At her present age, a grand plie—lowering to the floor with bent knees seemed to be out of the question. It took her three months to master the move: leaping and landing on one foot. “I love the struggle and the challenge of learning something new. People in their 60s have a lot of self-limiting beliefs: ‘I can’t do it,’ ‘I’m not good enough.’ And maybe they’re not good enough. But it doesn’t matter,” she said.
Ballet has been transformative At a medical appointment a few months after Leverton’s first class, a nurse measured her at 163 cm, half an inch taller than she had thought. She attributes (归因) the difference to improved posture. Her muscle tone has improved and her lower back pain has stopped. Dancing has also brought new friends. She met a group of older, more independent women and worked together towards a team award with the Royal Academy of Dance. And then, of course, there is the joyful feeling.“Ballet is all the therapy (治疗) I’ll ever need,” said Leverton.
4. How Leverton been feeling about taking a ballet class?
A. Shy. B. Confident. C. Excited. D. Annoyed.
5. Why did Leverton fail to take a ballet class in her youth?
A. Her parents prevented her from doing so.
B. The ballet class was unaffordable for her family.
C. She had to hold two cleaning jobs.
D. Her family was busy immigrating to the UK.
6. What did dancing bring to Leverton?
A. Health and friendship. B. A team award.
C. Well-paid work. D. Fame and wealth.
7. What can be learned from Leverton’s story?
A. Hard work pays off. B. Never too old to pursue dreams.
C. Actions speak louder than words. D. Interest is the path to success.

A group of researchers has come up with a way to make it easier to drive in the snow: by designing tyres (轮胎) based on polar bear paws.
“We had an ongoing project for many years focused on ice,” said Ali Dhinojwala, who took part in the research.“We were looking at the friction (摩擦力) of materials because our national partners need to develop tyres with a strong grip on the road in ice and snow conditions.” The team turned to nature for inspiration, thinking that evolution might have already solved the problem in a way that could be copied with technology. The obvious place to look was polar bears — specifically the tiny bumps (凸块) on the surface of their paw pads — to find out what effect they have on the animals’ ability to move quickly across icy and snowy area.
To do this, the team gathered samples (样本) of polar bear paw pads, as well as samples from brown bears and American black bears (two species closely related to polar bears) and sun bears (a distantly related species, typically found in Asia). The team imaged the samples using a scanning electron microscope, produced 3D-printed copies and then tested them in snow in the lab.
They found that the tiny structures on the polar bear paw pads were taller, which gave them better friction on the snow, even though polar bears have smaller pads compared to other bears.
The team now wants to look into other factors that may have an effect, such as the patterns and shapes of the tiny structures. “If you look at snow tyres, you’ll see that they do have some deeper treads (外胎花纹), but this research could also show various ways to design them that could have a larger impact,” said Dhinojwala.
8 What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Tiny bumps. B. Polar bears. C. Snowy roads. D. Paw pads.
9. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The finding of the research. B. The background of the research.
C. The comparison of different bear pads. D. The differences of samples in the lab.
10. What can we infer from Dhinojwala’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Snow tyres that have deeper treads can be safe enough.
B. Different treads might be designed on the snow tyres.
C. The researchers should have turned to other bears for inspiration.
D. The design of snow tyres requires no further improvement.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. An Ongoing Project Focused on Ice
B. An Easier Way to Drive in the Snow
C. A New Research on Polar Bear Paw Pads
D. Snow Tyres Based on Polar Bear Paws
D
San Francisco’s waterfront (海滨) is on the National Register of Historic Places for good reason.
Its beautiful old landmarks, like the Ferry Building and the Bay Bridge, have been seen in many books, TV shows and movies — from the stories and novels of Jack London to the 1970s TV series The Streets of San Francisco. The future of San Francisco’s waterfront, however, isn’t safe.
In 2016, the National Trust for Historic Preservation put part of the city’s shoreline on its list of the US’s most endangered historic places, in part because of the threat of sea level rise. The waterfront landmarks of many cities are under increasing threat from floods and rising sea levels brought on by human-driven climate change. St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Italy and the Venice Beach boardwalk in Los Angeles face similar challenges to San Francisco.
“The whole issue of climate change and historic preservation intersects (交织) right at the waterfront,” said Elaine Forbes, director of the Port of San Francisco. As she watched the boats come and go on a sunny afternoon, Forbes said,“Sea level rise hasn’t historically been as much of a threat to San Francisco as major earthquakes.” However, that’s changed. Parts of the main road that runs along the waterfront have flooded from heavy rains in recent years. The state estimates (预估) the water could rise up to about two and a half feet above its present level by 2060, and possibly up to seven feet by the turn of the century.
Now, San Francisco is considering measures to save its historic shoreline. But the growing magnitude (震级) and frequency of the climate-related threats, the high costs and effort needed in saving heritage sites, and competing ideas about what’s worth saving and what isn’t, can make it hard for cities to know what to do first.
12. What is San Francisco’s waterfront famous for?
A. Crowded beaches. B. Old landmarks.
C. Comfortable climate. D. Beautiful bridges.
13. What challenge is the waterfront facing?
A. The threat from rising sea levels.
B. The loss of public support.
C. The competition from other cities
D. The influence of tourist activities.
14. Why is the earthquake mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A. To stress the seriousness of sea level rise.
B. To give an example of existing threats.
C. To show the difficulty in the waterfront protection.
D. To compare different types of natural disasters.
15. What can be known from the text?
A. Threats have been removed. B. Heritage sites are in ruins.
C. Solutions are under consideration. D. The shoreline has been flooded.

“Goodbye, Mum and Dads, don’t worry. We’ll take care of everything!” Carly waved from the front door of the shop as her parents drove off. They were headed for a well-deserved vacation from their candy store, and Carly had promised them she’d be able to run it by herself.
Her parents didn’t quite agree, however, so they compromised by having Carly’s Aunt Maggie come over and help. Aunt Maggie didn’t have any experience running a store, but Carly did, and at least her aunt would be good company. Carly put on her pink shop apron (围裙) and removed a white one from a hook, handing it to her aunt. “Please put this on. The main job is to serve customers, but we also make some of the candy ourselves. Dad and Mum did most of the work already, but we have to finish up a few things. I’ll show you.” Carly took her aunt behind the counter and over to where the family made some of their own candy, such as fresh fudge (软糖), cotton candy, and ice cream. They had lots of delicious flavours to choose from. Aunt Maggie took a little bite of the chocolate mint-flavouted fudge, saying. “It’s delicious.”
“It’s good, but… unoriginal.” Carly said, “We can do better.” Before Aunt Maggie could question what she meant. Carly went into the kitchen, coming back with her hands full of items. She spread them on the work surface. “I want to create new flavours and our customers should try something new, something innovative.”
Aunt Maggie’s eyes grew wide as she looked at the items. Brussels sprouts (球芽甘蓝). Flaming Hot Chili Sauce (辣椒酱)… “Are you sure they can be added into fudges or ice creams?” Aunt Maggie shook her head in disbelief. Carly looked at her aunt, saying that it would work and the cold would perfectly balance out the spicy sauce.
After a while, today’s new specials were done—Brussels sprout fudge, barbeque-flavoured cotton candy, hot sauce ice cream… Carly looked at them proudly but Aunt Maggie disbelieved and said. “I just wish our customers would like them.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
They put up a sign in front of the store showing the new flavours.

C 5. B 6. A 7. B

A group of researchers has come up with a way to make it easier to drive in the snow: by designing tyres (轮胎) based on polar bear paws
“We had an ongoing project for many years focused on ice” said Ali Dhinojwala, who took part in the research.“We were looking at the friction (摩擦力) of materials because our national partners need to develop tyres with a strong grip on the road in ice and snow conditions.” The team turned to nature for inspiration, thinking that evolution might have already solved the problem in a way that could be copied with technology.
8. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Tiny bumps.

12 What is San Francisco’s waterfront famous for?
B 13. A 14. A 15. C

本空用并列连词and,连接两个并列的动词短语“make a city famous”和“promote a tourism boom”。故填and。
be satisfied with为固定搭配,意为“对……感到满意”。故填with。
put“放”是谓语动词,与主语films and TV dramas之间为主动关系,根据时间状语Over the past year可知,句子应用现在完成时,主语为复数,助动词用have。故填have put。
The iconic No. 27 on the Bund,关系词代替先行词在从句中作地点状语,应用关系副词where引导。故填where。
故填an。

Farming and new technologies
In recent years, an increasing number of new technologies have been applied in farming. Despite all inevitable risks, these breakthroughs in technologies do promote agricultural development.
On the one hand, with the application of various advanced technologies, varying from automatic systems to AI integration in agricultural field, the farming efficiency and productivity are shooting up, enabling farmers to break away from tedious physical workloads. On the other hand, what concerns the public is that the long-term effects of new technologies may do harm to the environment and human health. Furthermore, the escalating unemployment level and population migration issues due to the automatic farming process should be fully taken into consideration.
As far as I’m concerned, while we are embracing new technologies in farming, it is crucial to strike a balance between their benefits and risks to fulfill the sustainable farming development.
