One evening, Rachel Lapierre bought a $4 scratch ticket while picking up groceries. After an exhausting day, she needed something to lift her spirits. The 46-year-old mother of four was wearing herself thin as a nearly full-time emergency room nurse and part-time volunteer aid worker.
She longed to be able to one day quit nursing job and focus on the volunteer work she found most fulfilling. She vowed to herself that if she ever won the lottery, that’s what she would do.
Lapierre went home and scratched her ticket, revealing three sunny faces. The next day, the Loto-Quebec office informed her that she had won a lump sum of $675,000 or $1,000 a week for life. She chose the latter. “I know myself,” she said. “The lump sum would have melted like snow in the sun.”
Staying true to her word, Lapierre quit her nursing job and dedicated her life to helping others through her passion project, Le Book Humanitaire, which has since become a registered charity
Le Book, as Lapierre, now 62, affectionately calls it, began as a simple list of good deeds. To her, the deeds were just small acts of kindness—buying clothes for a family of newly arrived immigrants, delivering a meal to an isolated senior or giving medical attention to someone living on the streets.
“Le Book has had an immense impact on me and on many vulnerable people,” says Martyne, 52. The former special-education technician suffers from long Covid and has been unable to work since getting sick in March 2020. Martyne is now on Le Book’s food delivery route. “With courtesy and no judgment, Le Book helps us get what we need,” she says.
“When you do a good deed, it has a butterfly effect,” says Lapierre. “One good deed can affect 10 people. So if we all do a good deed? That can save the world.”
4. Why did Lapierre choose $1,000 a week for life instead of a lump sum?
A. A lump sum was likely to vanish like snow.
B. She wanted to make better use of the money.
C. She had no idea how to spend a large fortune.
D. She was afraid the money would be easily stolen.
5. Why is the story of Martyne mentioned?
A. To explain how Le Book works.
B. To show Le Book’s great influence.
C. To tell people her miserable experience.
D To appeal to more people to join Le Book.
6. Which of the following words can best describe Lapierre?
A. Generous and kind-hearted. B. Committed and courageous.
C. Determined and humble. D. Energetic and creative.
7. What can be inferred from Lapierre’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Many hands make light work. B. Roses given, fragrance in hand.
C. One good turn deserves another. D. Action speaks louder than words.
B 5. B 6. A 7. A

Comfort food makes a person feel good. Food high in sugar or fat tends to improve moods by stimulating the brain’s reward system. So it makes sense that many of us may turn to food for comfort in times of stress. There’s some fascinating research that examines food as a source of comfort. However, the most interesting thing about this research may be that foods are far less comforting than we tend to believe they are.
Traci Mann, a professor of psychology, and colleagues conducted a series of study with college students. The researchers examined how much comfort foods actually improve moods. They provided students with one of the three foods that they had indicated were their top, personal comfort foods. After producing a negative mood by having them watch movie clips designed to increase their sadness, anger and anxiety, the researchers offered the students their comfort food.
They had to assess (评估) how they felt before and after they were supposedly comforted by ice cream, pizza or whatever they had indicated they typically ate to feel better. All of the students completed the study on two separate occasions: once when they were able to eat their comfort food and once when they were able to eat another food they liked, but they wouldn’t call it a comfort food. The researchers found that comfort food did improve students’ moods — but only by a little bit and not more than the other food they liked.
In another study, comfort food was compared to no food at all, and students’ moods seemed to improve even when they didn’t eat anything — most likely just due to the passage of time.
The take-home message from the studies? While the comfort food may make the person feel better for the time being, it does little to address emotional problems. Of course, everyone can indulge (纵情) in a comfort food from time to time, but overall, aim for these instances to be the exception rather than the rule.
8. Which aspect of comfort food do Traci Mann’s studies focus on?
A. The means by which it affects moods. B. Its role in reducing negativity.
C. The extent to which it lifts moods. D. Its impact on physical health.
9. How were the studies carried out?
A. By comparing students’ feelings on different occasions.
B. By observing students’ different reactions to foods.
C. By analyzing questionnaires about comfort foods.
D. By collecting data about people from all walks of life.
10. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. To explain a rule. B. To introduce a concept.
C. To present a fact. D. To make a suggestion.
11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Feeling Negative? Try Comfort Food B. Comfort Food May Not Work Wonders
C. The Science Behind Comfort Food D. Comfort Food Tends to Be Unhealthy
C 9. A 10. D 11. B
根据文章第二段中“Traci Mann, a professor of psychology, and colleagues conducted a series of study with college students. The researchers examined how much comfort foods actually improve moods.”(心理学教授特蕾西·曼恩(Traci Mann)及其同事对大学生进行了一系列研究。
根据第三段中“They had to assess (评估) how they felt before and after they were supposedly comforted by ice cream, pizza or whatever they had indicated they typically ate to feel better.”(他们必须评估他们在吃了冰淇淋、披萨或任何他们认为能让他们感觉更好的东西之后的感觉。) 故选A。
根据文章最后一段中作者提到的“While the comfort food may make the person feel better for the time being, it does little to address emotional problems.”(虽然安慰食物可能会让人暂时感觉好一些,但它对解决情绪问题几乎没有作用)推知,作者认为不能过度依赖安慰食物来解决情绪问题。
D
Plants are known to respond to seasonal changes by budding (发芽), leafing, and flowering. As climate change stands to shift these so-called phenological (物候的) stages in the life cycle of plants, access to data about phenological changes — from many different locations and in different plants — can be used to draw conclusions about the actual consequences of climate change.
However, conducting such analyses require a large amount of data and data collection of this scale would be unthinkable without the help of citizen scientists.
“Mobile apps like Flora Incognita could help solve this issue. The app allows users to identify unknown wild plants within a matter of seconds. When I take a picture of a plant with the app, the observation is recorded with the exact location as well as a time stamp,” says the first author Karin Mora, research fellow at Leipzig University.
Although satellite data also records the phenology of entire ecosystems from above, they do not provide information about the processes taking place on the ground.
The researchers developed an algorithm (算法) that draws on almost 10 million observations of nearly 3,000 plants species identified in Germany by users of Flora Incognita. The data show that each individual plant has its own cycle as to when it begins a flowering or growth phase. Furthermore, the scientists were able to show that group behaviour arises from the behaviour of individuals. From this, they were able to conclude ecological patterns and investigate how these change with the seasons. For example, ecosystems by rivers differ from those in the mountains, where phenological events start later.
It is known that climate change is causing seasonal shifts — for example, spring is arriving earlier and earlier. How this affects the relationship between plants and pollinating insects and therefore potentially also food security is still being subject to further research. The new algorithm can now be used to better analyse the effects of these changes on the plant world.
12. What is the significance of data about phenological changes?
A. It can serve as the indicator of weather. B. It can help people to select the best seeds.
C. It can show the actual effects of climate change. D. It can be used to change the life cycle of plants.
13. What does the underlined part “this issue” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Collecting data. B. Sorting out species.
C. Identifying plants. D. Checking climate change.
14. What conclusion did researchers draw using the new algorithm?
A. Spring is becoming longer and longer. B. All plants have their own growth cycle.
C. Group behaviour affects individual behaviour. D. Ecological patterns in different areas are similar.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How citizen scientists use mobile apps to collect data.
B. How climate change is affecting the growth of plants.
C. How a plant app helps identify the impact of climate change.
D. How Flora Incognita allows users to identify unknown wild plants.
C 13. A 14. B 15. C

根据第一段中“As climate change stands to shift these so-called phenological (物候的) stages in the life cycle of plants, access to data about phenological changes — from many different locations and in different plants — can be used to draw conclusions about the actual consequences of climate change. (由于气候变化改变了植物生命周期中所谓的物候阶段,获取来自许多不同地点和不同植物的物候变化数据,可以用来得出关于气候变化实际后果的结论。)”可知,物候变化数据的意义在于它能反映气候变化的实际影响。故选C项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线部分所在句的上一段“However, conducting such analyses require a large amount of data and data collection of this scale would be unthinkable without the help of citizen scientists. (然而,进行这样的分析需要大量的数据,如果没有公民科学家的帮助,这种规模的数据收集是不可想象的。)”和画线部分的上文“Mobile apps like Flora Incognita could help solve (像Flora Incognita这样的移动应用程序可以帮助解决)”可知,文中先提到需要收集大规模的数据,然后提到如Flora Incognita这样的移动应用程序可以发挥解决的作用,由此可知,程序解决的是收集数据的问题,画线部分指代的是收集数据。故选A项。
根据第五段中“The data show that each individual plant has its own cycle as to when it begins a flowering or growth phase. (数据显示,每一株植物都有自己的开花或生长周期。)”可知,研究人员利用新算法得出的结论是,所有植物都有自己的生长周期。故选B项。
【15题详解】

【导语】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。作者总结了自己在国外求学经历中所获得的一些生活智慧、人生感悟以及留学经历对自己的影响。
【16题详解】
前句“I’m an Indonesian student and finished my Master’s degree in Sweden.(我是一名印度尼西亚学生,在瑞典完成了我的硕士学位)”提到作者在国外学习,后句“Here are my top four things that I’ve learned from my experience.(以下是我从自己的经历中学到的四件事)”引出本文的话题,即介绍作者从个人经历中所学到的四件事情,因此判断C 选项“在国外学习教会了我很多东西”符合语境。故选C。
根据上文“I understand my home country better. Being a local in my home country for almost a lifetime got me thinking that the grass was always greener in other countries.(我更了解我的祖国。
根据上文“I get much deeper understanding of other cultures’ perspectives. Studying abroad has changed my perspective and made me shift my beliefs. I’ve learned the issue of privacy. I used to see that the internet is the place where we should talk about our activities and share many parts of ourselves to the world. I used to take everyone’s pictures and share them online.(我对其他文化的观点有了更深的理解。
根据前面提到的问题“What is travelling all about? Why do we need travelling?(什么是旅行?我们为什么需要旅行?)”,结合“questions”可知F选项“通过回答这些问题,我开始对旅行有了不同的理解”的内容符合语境。故选F。
【20题详解】
根据后文“When you study abroad, the first thing you might notice are the many differences between people. But you also see that all of these differences are also universal — people in many ways are the same everywhere. Studying abroad gives you the opportunity to really understand people from different culture backgrounds. And when you make friends, you learn to accept their perfections alongside their shortcomings.(当你在国外学习时,你可能注意到的第一件事就是人与人之间的许多差异。但你也会看到,所有这些差异也是普遍存在的——世界各地的人在很多方面都是一样的。出国留学让你有机会真正了解来自不同文化背景的人。当你交朋友时,你学会接受他们的优点和缺点)”可知,本段内容介绍了在国外学习时作者注意到人与人之间的差异,但也发现这种差异是普遍存在的,从而在接受人们优点的同时也学会了接受人们的缺点,故A 选项“我逐渐学会接受人与人之间的差异”可以作为本段主题句。故选A。

Undoubtedly, Mother Nature is always attractive to kids. In our childhood, how often did we turn a deaf ear to our parents’ advice? Very often! Thus, we landed ourselves in a situation where we greatly regretted our act of not having listened to the advice of the wise.
Such an unforgettable experience I had at the age of 7 gave me an invaluable lesson, after which I deeply understood why my gentle mother was repeating the boring suggestions and I would try to take her suggestions seriously.
In my childhood, I was so crazy about nature that even playing among the colorful flowers in our garden could make my day. Our house was next to the woods which had always stirred up(激起) great curiosity in me in wanting to find out what was within. Every time I saw fascinating butterflies dancing from the woods, my curiosity grew.
But my mother didn’t like me wandering off on my own and always ensured that I was within her sight. Even if she allowed me to explore the surrounding area on my own, it was only to be somewhere near the house. Being as curious as the cat, I always desired to explore the woods. It seemed as if my mother had understood my desire, so she had warmed me on lots of occasions never to enter the woods alone.
“Mom, can I go out and play in the garden?” I asked.
“Sure,” she would reply each time. “Kate, you can play in the garden but you must promise me one thing—only when I’m with you can you go into the woods. There are no cases of animal attacks on humans, but it’s still dangerous for a little kid like you. It’s too easy to get lost in the woods.”
“Sure, you’ve said that many times!” I answered without patience at her repeated reminders.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning.

However, curiosity got the better of me one morning. Ignoring my mother’s reminder, I slid into the forbidden world. How fascinating! Among various colorful flowers danced butterflies. With excitement, I chased after the graceful creatures, running deeper into the woods. Suddenly they flew over trees and disappeared. What’s worse, I got lost! I rushed around, crying for help, frightened and helpless, but in vain. I repeated the useless efforts until sunset. “If only I followed Mom’s reminder!” I curled up under a tree, in bitter regret and cried again.
“Kate?” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice. “Mom! I’m here!” Wild with joy, I rushed towards where the voice came from. Behind a tree appeared my mother. She dashed up, hugged me tight and checked whether I got hurt. “I’m so sorry! I should have appreciated your suggestion!” I burst into tears. Wiping tears from my muddy face, she repeated the reminders, which weren’t boring any more, but wise and affectionate, and were implanted in my life forever.
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning. I summoned up my courage and decided to take a chance. Hardly had I entered the woods when I was totally attracted by the sight. The wandering clouds, the blooming flowers and the vigorous trees all kept me spellbound. At the sight of a beautiful butterfly, I tiptoed along the path, bent over, cupped my hands gently and danced with it down the track. Time flew and before I knew it, I was deep in the woods, unable to find the way out. With a feeling of horror totally holding me in its power, I squatted down under a tree, tears rolling down my cheeks.
“Kate?” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice. Hearing my mom’s voice, I yelled in a quivering tone, rushed towards her direction and threw my arms around her. Noticing my misty eyes, she patted me on the shoulders and checked whether I got hurt. Choked with emotion, I whispered, “I am OK, Mom. I will never go into the woods without your company and permission.” Shooting me an approving look, she added, “Next time you want to come, keep me informed!” In the setting sun, we headed back and this time, I held my mom’s hand tightly.

D. To appeal to more people to join Le Book.
6. Which of the following words can best describe Lapierre?
A. Generous and kind-hearted. B. Committed and courageous.
C. Determined and humble. D. Energetic and creative.
7. What can be inferred from Lapierre’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Many hands make light work. B. Roses given, fragrance in hand.
C. One good turn deserves another. D. Action speaks louder than words.

C Group behaviour affects individual behaviour.

Undoubtedly, Mother Nature is always attractive to kids. In our childhood, how often did we turn a deaf ear to our parents’ advice? Very often! Thus, we landed ourselves in a situation where we greatly regretted our act of not having listened to the advice of the wise.
Such an unforgettable experience I had at the age of 7 gave me an invaluable lesson after which I deeply understood why my gentle mother was repeating the boring suggestions and I would try to take her suggestions seriously.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
