10.A [词义猜测题。根据画线词后的“We all have one area in our lives that triggers us.Maybe you've been...Maybe...”可知,画线词所在句的意思是:但这不仅仅局限于身体形象。所以画线词可能的意思是“受限制的”。故选A项。related相关的,有联系的;devoted挚爱的,忠诚的;exposed暴露的。]
11.B [推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Everyone has their struggles and life is indeed not perfect for anyone. So,put down your phone, get offline,be thankful and try to live your own life.”可知,作者建议人们停止比较,做自己。故选B项。]

(2024·惠州市调研)When the phone finally stopped ringing and the house lay still with grief,I filled my home with the sweet smell of peach pie to mask the scent of worry that still lingered.
At the weekend after Dad's diagnosis(诊断),Mom sent the same text to each concerned relative and friend: Jay was diagnosed with Pick's disease. We were going back to the doctor for more information. Then Mom put down the phone, rubbed her forehead, and suggested that we go for a drive. On the interstate,we passed a board with clear red letters:“Fredericksburg peaches, the best fruit you can find in Central Texas.”Mom went to negotiate with the stand owner.
Now in our kitchen, the sweet smell of peach juice drifted into the living room and pulled Dad away from the football game on TV.
“Oh! You got peaches?”he eyed the fruit with childish glee (欢喜).
“Here,”I handed him a knife.“We're making peach pie.”
I showed him how to peel the skin off.As I made pie dough,he asked questions:How long does it take to bake? Are you adding sugar? How many peaches? What should I do with the seeds? Showing him how to slice, measure and mix them in a calm, firm voice,I suddenly felt grown-up.
The summer had reversed our roles. Now,I was the adult.I stayed home all summer, cooked dinner for him, washed his T-shirts and helped him make phone calls.I stayed up late thinking about him and monitored him like an anxious caretaker.
The same day, before the afternoon drive and peach pie,I had held my tears as I read the diagnosis for Pick's disease:four to ten years, depending on how fast the damaged proteins overpower Dad's brain.I decided then that I would be grateful for just four more years with Dad,enough for him to see me become an adult for real.
4.Why did Mom propose a ride?

B.To enjoy a trip.
C.To release sorrow.

C 篇(限时7分钟)
(2024·佛山市教学质检一)It's no secret now that the more time we spend on social media, the more we feel dissatisfied with ourselves. We tend to compare ourselves to influencers and celebrities—so it's easy to understand how that can affect our confidence.
But,how often have you found yourself comparing your life to your friends? Engaging with social media shared by our friends can be more damaging than looking at contents shared by celebrities, new research has found.
The study looking at how social media affects body image found that any social media engagement was significantly associated with lower “appearance satisfaction”.Additionally,it found that engaging with contents posted by people the participants knew was more than twice as damaging as looking at contents posted by strangers, including celebrities.
Viren Swami,Professor of Social Psychology at Anglia Ruskin University, believes this is partly because we know it's hard to attain the lives of celebrities or influencers, but when we're comparing ourselves to our friends,it feels like we should—or could—live the way they do.
“One possible explanation is that people may perceive a post showing appearance as being much more attainable if it comes from someone they know, adding expectation or pressure on the person engaging in the post,”he said.“At the same time, people may be more critically engaged with posts by the likes of models and celebrities, and therefore perceive the images they share to be more unrealistic.”
This isn't just confined to body image though. We all have one area in our lives that triggers (触发) us.Maybe you've been searching for a new job for months and you find yourself on social media, envying your school friend who just landed their dream role.Maybe...
All this is to state the obvious:We only see part of people's lives—and if it's getting you down, you're probably comparing your insides to other people's outsides.Everyone has their struggles and life is indeed not perfect for anyone. So,put down your phone, get offline,be thankful and try to live your own life.
8.What did the new study find?
A.Social media invites unfavorable comments.
B.Friends' posts affect us more than celebrities'.
C.Celebrities have a negative influence on our life.
D.Body image causes more concern than social life.
9.Why are we more likely to compare with our friends according to Swami?
A.They serve as role models.
B.We know the way they live.
C.Their lifestyles seem to be accessible.
D.We are curious about their life.
10.What does the underlined word in paragraph 6 probably mean?
A.Restricted. B.Related.
C.Devoted. D.Exposed.
11.What does the author suggest people do?
A.Find your dream and fight for it.
B.Stop comparing and be yourself.
C.Be grateful and lead a perfect life.
D.Stop complaining and get down to work.

What was worse,a wine bottle fell and broke, making me so annoyed. With the broken glass and bloodred wine all over the place, everything paused at that moment. For a moment, everybody stopped what he or she was doing and looked my way.So embarrassed was I that I stood there clumsily, feeling the blood rushing to my face.Meanwhile, the beautiful female voice of the machine broke the awful silence,“Please slide your card on the front glass.” I've had just enough of it and I noticed my husband had that familiar “I told you so” look on his face and then he walked over to the assistant for help who had been turned down by me!
After the assistant helped us out,I turned to my husband.“All right, honey,” he jokingly said,a different comfort dawning across his lined face.“It's time for us to sign up for a class.”Clearly,my husband's bark was really worse than his bite. This experience made me realize that with the development of technology, some of us have been left far behind by new technological devices, even in other fields. It also made me realize that only by learning constantly can we handle our lives easily and smoothly.

(2024·福建省七市质检)The researchers drew a conclusion that orphaned (成为孤儿的) elephants would be more stressed out than non-orphans.There's a lot of evidence that the mother-child bond helps reduce stress in animals, which has been demonstrated previously in rats and birds, says the study leader Jenna Parker.Elephants have complicated social structures and deep family bonds.Because orphaned elephants in the same region died at a higher rate than elephants with living mothers,it seemed like a no-brainer that surviving orphans would be stressed out.
The team, however, made an unexpected finding: There really wasn't a difference in the stress hormone (激素) levels of orphaned and non-orphaned elephants,as long as they lived with family members, such as aunts, cousins,or brothers and sisters.Elephants—even the orphans—that lived in groups with fellows of their own age turned out to be under less stress than those that didn't.
Parker recalls two orphans in the study,Frida and Rothko.“Frida had a non-functional left ear and Rothko had a non-functional right ear,and they were inseparable,”she says.“It was as though they had at least one good set of ears as long as they were together!”The findings also fit with previous social research in African elephants,Parker says.“Orphans increase interaction with their age mates after their mother's death.”She notes that dominance is structured by age in elephants: Older elephants may outrank younger elephants when it comes to food, for example, but elephants of the same age are generally equals.
With human-wildlife conflict and drought threats to elephants in the region, the findings published today in Communications Biology offer a new insight into how having a strong fellow group may contribute to elephants' survival. This information could also help recovery facilities that take in orphaned elephants set the animals up for a successful future in the wild—releasing them in large groups of bonded fellows, for example.“The bottom line here is that elephants need elephants,”says Parker.“And when the worst happens, like losing a mother, some find new ways to survive and grow happily.”
1.Why are family bonds and social structures mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.To prove their connection.
B.To explain their meanings.
C.To show their significance.
D.To clarify their differences.
2.Which statement may Parker agree with?
A.Non-orphans outrank orphans in elephants.
B.Orphaned elephants are in need of their age mates.
C.Older elephants tend to attend to younger elephants.
D.Orphaned elephants prefer interaction with older elephants.
3.What does the author think of the team's research findings?
A.They're baseless.
B.They're novel.
C.They're original.
D.They're predictable.
4.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Hunting and Drought Are Major Threats to Elephants
B.Human Protection Helps Orphaned Elephants Survive
C.Living with Older Elephants May Contribute to Survival
D.Friends May Be Key to Stress Relief for Orphaned Elephants

I consider myself technologically capable,or at least I used to be! However, shopping with my husband the other day clearly showed I'm being left behind by the times.
After finishing picking lots of goods in a supermarket,we walked towards the checkout counters, noticing few people there. In fact, despite all the lights above the counters on,showing open, there was no cashier(收银员).Walking to a deserted counter, like an ATM machine,I saw it was brand new.On the other side of it was a long moving belt leading down to a kind of island. When I placed my shopping card near the machine,it monitored my presence and spoke to me in a soft woman's voice,“Please slide your card on the front glass.”
“OK,”I thought,“I can do this.”But my husband thought we should find somebody to walk us through this new process.
“Are you kidding?”I said.“Relax! I'll have us out of here within seconds.”
“Please slide your card on the front glass,”she asked again, except that this time she sounded a little impatient. Were they programmed to annoy customers?
I swiped (刷) my card down the card-slider on the side of the machine and it asked me to do it on the front glass.I thought I must have slid my card upside down,so I turned and swiped it again down that slider. Then the not-so-nice-anymore-computer-machine-lady told me I needed help.Honest to God,that was what she said;she said I needed somebody's help.
A store assistant noticed this, coming over, and I told him there was something wrong with the machine for its not taking my card.He took my card and slid it on the glass beside the slider I had been using. Then the machine-lady asked me to scan my goods. The assistant asked if I needed any more help.“No!”I suggested they should program the machine more precisely. He smiled and walked away.
It worked well,so I decided to show my husband I could scan the rest faster.I was doing well when the belt suddenly stopped and began to move backward. The machine-lady told me to rescan because of an overload on the belt.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
What was worse,a wine bottle fell and broke, making me so annoyed.
