A Lesson Plan from Life Planning Education:A Youth Development Program
Purpose:To learn about body language and how to use body language
Materials (材料):cards; container
Time:25-35 minutes
Planning Notes:
•Write the words below on cards:
angry, disappointed, shy, afraid, sad, happy, nervous, excited, bored
•Place the cards in the container so volunteers can draw them out one at a time.
Steps:
First make sure that all volunteers know what body language means(expressing feelings through body movement and facial expressions).Go over the following instructions:
•I’ll need at least 9 volunteers to play a game similar to charades (猜词游戏).
•The first volunteer will draw a card with a feeling written on it and act out the feeling without using words.
•The rest of the group will guess what feeling is being communicated. Once someone correctly guesses the feeling, the next person in line will draw a card and act out what is written on it, again without words.
•The game will continue until there are no more cards or until time is up.
At last, end the activity using the discussion points below:
•Can you give examples of when someone’s body language communicated a different message from what he/she actually said?
•Sometimes one person is offended (冒犯) by another’s body language. How can you work to keep that from happening? Answers may include: be honest and direct; match your non-verbal messages to your verbal ones; be aware of cultural attitudes toward different kinds of body language.
1. To whom is the text most likely written?
A. Teachers. B. Students.
C. Volunteers. D. Young parents.
2. What do we know about the game?

In March 2008, I told my friends: I was going to shut down my law practice and travel around the world in a year. What's more, I'd do it without taking any flights or making a single advance (预先的) reservation. Some friends offered support and encouragement, while others were doubtful. Once I'd said the words, there was no turning back. It took months to shut down my law practice and get things in order.
There really wasn't any great reason why I wanted to circle the world. I simply wanted to do something fun and different. When I had this plan, I didn't plan for it to lead to a life on the road forever. I was planning to come back, open a new law practice and write a hugely successful book about my travels. Before I left, I started a travel blog, which served as a way to take notes for the book.
Once I set off on my trip in December 2008, I found that travelling without using planes was not easy. It took seven days and nights on trains to get from Moscow to Beijing. Sometimes, I wouldn't see a village or a human being for 10 hours. I had a whole cabin to myself from the second day of that journey.
It turned out that travelling with no reservations was far less difficult than I had imagined. Pulling into a city on a bus with a bag, looking in a guidebook for a few suggestions of accommodations (住宿), and then finding an empty room was never a problem.
Soon after I started this adventure, I realized that my return to the US would be temporary (暂时的). About three months into my journey, I realized that I didn't want to go back to my old life. The world is so wonderful and I wanted to see as much of it as I could.
4. What's the author's friends' attitude to his new plan?
A. Dissatisfied B. Supportive
C. Uncaring D. Divided
5. Why did the author shut down his law practice?
A. He lost interest in law. B. He followed a friend's example.
C. He wanted to find some enjoyment. D. He failed to run the business successfully.
6. What was the author's plan for his global trip?
A. Avoiding travelling by air. B. Finishing a book while travelling.
C. Making careful plans in advance. D. Finding a place for his law practice.
7. What would the author probably do after returning to the US?
A. Start a travel blog. B. Go back to his old life.
C. Prepare for another trip. D. Be a temporary worker.
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. A 7. C

When adult humans meet a baby, many can’t help speaking in a higher-pitched (更高音的), sing-song y voice. This shift, known as parentese, is not unique to humans — it has also been observed in animals like monkeys and gorillas. Now, scientists are adding one more species to that list: bottlenose dolphins.
Dolphins are intelligent animals that live and hunt in groups. They communicate in a unique way: every individual produces its own signature sound that acts much like an ID card usually by its first birthday. But how does each come up with its distinctive whistle? For babies, it might have something to do with listening to Mum. To solve this mystery, researchers examined the sounds mother dolphins, make.
Scientists studied 34 years’ worth of recordings of sounds made by 19 female bottlenose dolphins. When the mother dolphins were near their young, they continued to make their signature sound, but at a higher frequency. They also used a wider range of frequencies than they did when their babies were not nearby.
This discovery suggests that using these modifications mother dolphins assist their young in learning how to produce these calls themselves. Since dolphin babies often spend some years with their mothers before living on their own, it makes sense that this adaptation would help them learn to communicate. At the very least, the higher-pitched whistle likely gets the babies’ attention. “It’s important for a baby to know,’ Oh, Mum’s talking to me now,’” says marine biologist June Mann.
This kind of research could help us understand how language developed in humans. “It is absolutely essential to have basic knowledge about other species and how they communicate,” says Mann. “I would be really interested to see whether dolphins also change their sounds when interacting with babies of others, which is what happens in humans.”
8. What do the underlined words “this mystery ”refer to in paragraph 2?
A. Why dolphins live and play in groups.
B. How dolphins develop their unique sounds.
C. What aspects of intelligence dolphins possess.
D. Whether dolphins can use parentese like humans.
9. How did the researchers carry out their study of dolphins?
A. By analyzing mother dolphins’ sound features.
B. By recording parent-child interaction frequency.
C. By measuring the distance between parent and child.
D. By examining the speech organs of mother dolphins.
10. What is a suggested reason why dolphin mothers use parentese with their young?
A. To help them learn to talk. B. To teach them hunting skills.
C. To express worry and care. D. To distract their attention.
11. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To compare the parentese of humans and dolphins.
B. To illustrate the development of dolphin intelligence.
C. To share new findings about dolphin communication.
D. To highlight the value of studying dolphins’ language.

Recently, three engineers at the University of Glasgow have designed and built an innovative AI-based drone (无人机) system that can assist in search efforts for hikers lost in the wilderness. They have published a paper describing their efforts on the preprint server.
Hiking in the Scottish Highlands has become a popular activity over the past several decades. The landscape offers a wide variety of remote locations that allow hikers to get back to nature. But such hiking can be disastrous— hikers can get lost or injured. Many find themselves in need of assistance every year. Because of that, emergency teams use both traditional and modern techniques to find those who are lost or have become disabled for some reasons.
In recent years, searchers have begun to use drones— their higher point allows for covering more land more quickly than searching on foot. It helps spot and locate things precisely that searchers aren’t able to see from the ground. In this new effort, the team wondered if adding AI to drone technology could improve the search for lost hikers.
To find out it, they created an AI model using data sets showing the paths taken by people who were lost and then found by search parties around the world. They also added relevant data, such as participants’ age, their reasons for hiking, and details about whether they were walking alone, or using some other form of transportation like horseback riding. They noted geographical information regarding both the path taken by those who were lost and where they were found, such as rivers, streams, roads or open ground. They then added data specific to Scotland’s geography. They ran the model millions of times, each representing a simulated search, until it narrowed down the most probable paths a lost hiker would take. The drone would then be instructed to search those paths first.
In testing their system against traditional approaches-- such as“the lawn mower” sweeping technique used to find actual hikers— the new approach found lost hikers more often. The researchers say they need more data to make their system more accurate and eventually result in a tool that could be used to save lives.
12. What do we know about the AI-based drone system?
A. It is a boost to search techniques.
B It has replaced traditional search methods.
C. It has been employed in searches for decades.
D. It is excluded from searches in the Scottish Highlands.
13. What mainly makes AI drones effective in finding lost hikers?
A Fast photo taking. B. Accurate positioning.
C. Quick landing ability. D. Precise image analysis.
14. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. How the AI drones were invented.
B. How relevant data affected hikers’ paths.
C. How hikers got geographical information.
D. How the AI model improved drone search strategies.
15. How do the researchers propose to improve the new searching approach?
A. By perfecting the related data.
B. By equipping hikers with AI tools.
C. By abandoning the current system.
D. By increasing search practice frequency.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. A

It was the beginning of a new year, and I was in the best class, where most of the chatterboxes were. Sadly, I was not one of them. Most of the time, my mouth was zipped very tightly and I hardly had any friends who appreciated my silence.
There was a speech competition three months later. The selection was left to our strict English teacher Mrs.Lee, whom I feared the most because she hardly ever smiled at us. Strangely though, on the day her decision was to be announced to us, she proclaimed, “Jane shall be the one who will join the competition.”
There was silence in our usually-noisy class. “You have to write a speech today and show it to me tomorrow, Jane,” Mrs. Lee instructed, thereby breaking the ice.
The next day, I showed my speech to Mrs. Lee. Reading it, she nodded in satisfaction and grinned at me for the first time. In the sweetest voice, she praised me, “Wonderful work! Why don’t you read it to the class?” Instantly, my throat went dry. Butterflies fluttered around in my stomach, crashing against my stomach walls and making me feel sick.
Swallowing hard and taking a deep breath, I began reciting my essay with the worst pronunciation anyone had ever heard. However, I stumbled a little and panicked, unable to go on. The entire class burst into laughter as they shouted discouraging words, saying that they should have been in my place instead. Hot tears stung my eyes as I rushed back to my seat, weeping silently in embarrassment.
After school, Mrs. Lee called me to her office, where she gave me a few pointers on how to overcome stage fright. Patiently, she went through the speech with me several times until my utterly bad pronunciation was “cured”. It was with much patience that Mrs. Lee worked through those three months with me, ensuring that my words were crisp and clear and teaching me how to put expressions into my sentences.

Instantly, Mrs. Lee took my cold, clammy hands in hers and spoke words of encouragement. I immediately gained confidence and beamed with a smile. When the host called my name, I strode up to the stage with my heart pounding so hard. Reaching for the microphone, I closed my eyes, smiled, and then opened them, casting aside all my fears. I began speaking, and my voice came out crisp and clear, with perfect articulation. Before I knew it, the speech was over, and everyone was giving me a standing ovation.
When the contest was over, the judges declared me the champion. They invited me to go up on stage to receive the trophy. I was dizzy with delight and could not suppress my nervous giggles, my grins, or the tears of joy welling up in my eyes. I had won! I could do it! I didn’t let all my hard work go to waste, nor did I disappoint Mrs. Lee, who had put in so much effort! Smiling into the audience, I spotted Mrs. Lee, who was smiling back at me with pride sparkling in her eyes. “Thank you, Mrs. Lee!” I thought to myself. “You have proven that nothing is insurmountable, as long as I do not give up and work hard!”

Supportive
C. Uncaring D. Divided
5 Why did the author shut down his law practice?
A. He lost interest in law. B. He followed a friend's example.
C. He wanted to find some enjoyment. D. He failed to run the business successfully.
6. What was the author's plan for his global trip?
A Avoiding travelling by air. B. Finishing a book while travelling.
C. Making careful plans in advance. D. Finding a place for his law practice.
7. What would the author probably do after returning to the US?
A. Start a travel blog. B. Go back to his old life.
C. Prepare for another trip. D. Be a temporary worker.

They communicate in a unique way: every individual produces its own signature sound that acts much like an ID card, usually by its first birthday.

Recently three engineers at the University of Glasgow have designed and built an innovative AI-based drone (无人机) system that can assist in search efforts for hikers lost in the wilderness.
B. It has replaced traditional search methods.
C. It has been employed in searches for decades.
D. It is excluded from searches in the Scottish Highlands.
13. What mainly makes AI drones effective in finding lost hikers?
A. Fast photo taking.
