33- year- old Japanese writer Rie Kudan won the Akutagawa Prize because of her book, Tokyo- to Dojo- to (Tokyo Sympathy Tower) , becoming the latest recipient of the well-known Japanese literary prize, the Japan Times reported.
Kudan has revealed that part of her novel was written with the help of ChatGPT. “This is a novel written by making full use of a generative artificial intelligence (AI) ,” Kudan said in her acceptance speech. “Probably about 5 percent of the whole text is written directly from the generative AI. I’d like to work well with it to express my creativity. ”
As CNN's Christy Choi and Francesca Annio report, the awards committee praised Kudan’s novel as “practically perfect”. “Set in the near future, Tokyo Sympathy Tower takes place in a society that depends on AI. Architect Sara Makina designs a tower in Tokyo for a project, but develops misgivings about the project,” writes the London Times’ Richard Lloyd Parry, adding: “One of the themes of the book is the way that ‘soft and fuzzy (模糊的) words’ confuse ideas about justice, and it is to reproduce these that Kudan turned to ChatGPT. ”
The Akutagawa Prize, awarded twice a year to emerging writers, is named after early 20th-century Japanese writer Ryunosuke Akutagawa, known as the “father of the Japanese short story”. As the Short Story Project writes, the author “was drawn to the bizarre (离奇的) .” Awards officials have recently been trying to diversify the group of writers who receive the honor — and now, Kudan's work is the first to include writing by AI.
Ever since AI text generators appeared, some people of the literary world have been urging care while using them. Just last year, a group of famous authors, including Jodi Picoult, got together to charge OpenAI for “systematic theft” of their work, which they say was used to train ChatGPT. Kudan, for her part, will maintain her cooperation with ChatGPT. “I’ll continue to profit from the use of AI in the writing of my novels while letting my creativity express itself to the fullest,” she said.
4. What’s the highlight of Tokyo Sympathy Tower?
A. It’s about a historical event. B. It’s themed on AI technology.
C. It’s partly written by ChatGPT. D. It’s set in London of the near future.
5. Who’s Sara Makina?
A. A reporter reporting Kudan. B. A judge of the literary prize.
C. A character created by Kudan. D. A founder of the Akutagawa Prize.
6. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The system of AI needs further improving.
B. The application of AI may raise public debate.
C. Kudan may stop using AI text generators later.
D. Jodi has a positive attitude to AI text generators.
7. What’s the text?
A. A short story. B. A book review. C. A scientific paper. D. A news report.

In the age-old debate of cats vs. dogs, score one for cats. A recent study finds that cats are more into fetching than we ever imagined, narrowing the gap between these two beloved pets in terms of interactive play.
The researchers analyzed data from over 80, 000 pet owners to uncover the secrets of fetching behavior. They found that up to 40. 9% of cats played fetch with their owners, a figure far higher than previously thought. Meanwhile, 77. 8% of dogs exhibited fetching behavior, confirming our long- held beliefs about dogs’ playfulness.
In this study, researchers defined fetching as getting back the thrown objects or toys. For cats, this often involves carrying small objects or toys in their mouths and bringing them to their owners. Dogs, on the other hand, are more likely to run after sticks, balls, or other objects thrown by their human companions. The study’s findings challenge the common belief that cats are uninterested in interactive play with their owners. In fact, nearly 40% of cats reportedly initiated play by bringing toys to their owners. This suggests that many cats are not only capable of fetching but actively seek out this form of engagement with their owners.
Interestingly, the research uncovered some surprising factors that influenced fetching behavior in both species. For example, female cats and dogs were less likely to fetch than their male partners. Age also played a role, with older pets of both species showing a decreased likelihood of engaging in fetching behavior. Health issues were another factor that reduced the chances of fetching in both cats and dogs. Environmental factors also came into play. Cats kept exclusively indoors were more likely to fetch, possibly due to increased opportunities for interactive play with their owners. Surprisingly, both cats and dogs living in households with other dogs were less likely to engage in fetching behavior.
This research highlights the wonderful diversity of pet personalities. It’s a call to appreciate the unique qualities of each animal.
8. How did the researchers feel about the research result on dogs’ fetching behavior?
A. Unexpected. B. Doubtful. C. Normal. D. Contradictory.
9. What’s people’s conventional impression on cats?
A. They tend to play with dogs by fetching objects.
B They expect their owners to join in playing fetch.
C. They learn from dogs to bring objects to humans.
D. They lack the passion to interact with their owners.
10. Which factor decreases the likelihood of fetching in both cats and dogs?
A. Being male. B. Being so young.
C. Being kept indoors. D. Living with other dogs.
11. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Cats Love Playing Fetch Alone B. The Playful Side of Cats Revealed
C. Fetching Behavior: Cats vs. Dogs D. Interactive Play: Cats Beating Dogs
D
In an era where smartphones have become an extension of our hands a new study is bringing some concerning news about what these devices are doing to our hearts.
The study, analyzing data from over 440, 000 participants from the UK, found regular mobile phone users (those who used a phone at least once a week) were at a 4% greater likelihood of developing cardiovascular (心血管的) disease (CVD) compared to non-regular users. Among regular users, those who spent an hour or more on their phones per week faced a 10% increased likelihood compared to those who used their phones less. The risk increased with more phone use, with those using phones for more than 6 hours per week having a 21% higher risk.
However, the study doesn’t prove mobile phones directly cause heart problems. Instead, it suggests a complex connection between our habits of using phones and heart health. So, what’s behind this connection? The researchers propose several potential elucidations. First, frequent phone use might interrupt our sleep patterns. Poor sleep quality has long been associated with an increased risk of heart problems. Second, frequent phone use might contribute to a tendency towards negative emotions like anxiety and depression. These mental health factors have also been linked to a higher risk of heart disease.
Meanwhile, another side of the study should be considered. It relied on self-reported data about phone use, which may not always be accurate. It also only looked at phone calls, not other ways people use their phones, like texting. Additionally, the study population was mainly of European ancestry and healthier than the general UK population, so the results might not apply to everyone.
Nevertheless, mobile phone use is so common in modern society, so exploring its impact on health has significant public health value. So, what can you do for your heart health in the age of smartphones? The researchers suggest reducing the time spent on mobile phones is a simple yet effective way to lower your risk of CVD. But obviously, that’s not enough.
12. What’s the purpose of the author listing statistics in paragraph 2?
A. To tell us the danger of frequent phone use.
B. To show people’s addiction to using phones.
C. To stress the role phones play in our daily life.
D. To advice us to use other means of communication.
13. What does the underlined word “elucidations” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Confirmations. B. Measures. C. Explanations. D. Principles.
14. What does paragraph 4 focus on regarding the study?
A. Its existing limitations. B. Its theoretical basis.
C. Its convincing methods. D. Its different population.
15. What might the author continue talking about?
A. The replacement of smartphones. B. More ways to protect heart health.
C. The study on public health value. D. Serious dangers caused by CVD.

In a busy street of New York City, two strangers, Emily and Jack, found themselves on an unexpected journey of kindness and connection.
Emily, a young graphic (图案的) designer, was hurrying home after a late- night shift when she accidentally dropped her bag, scattering (散落) its contents onto the sidewalk. The scattered items were her work laptop, her latest design drawings, her mother's medication and some other things that were crucial to Emily. The wind was so strong that it could have blown her belongings away at any moment. Tired out, she knelt down, trying to gather her scattered belongings. Just then, Jack, a middle- aged man with a gentle smile, approached her. “Let me help you with that,” Jack offered, his voice warm and reassuring.
“Oh, thank you so much!” Emily replied with embarrassment.
As they picked up the items together, they struck up a conversation. Emily shared her story of a busy week, mentioning how her mother had always been a pillar (支柱) of support for her and her ten-year-old sister since their father's early passing, a source of unconditional love and wisdom that had shaped their lives. Jack, in turn, talked about his recent retirement and his dreams of hosting his own photography exhibition, showcasing the beauty he had captured through his camera over the years.
Suddenly, Emily's phone rang. It was her sister, panic- stricken, informing her that their mother needed immediate medical attention. Emily's face paled, and her hands started to shake. Jack asked, “Is everything alright?”
“My mother...she needs me, but I don't know how to get to the hospital quickly. I have no car.” Emily said, tears welling up in her eyes. Without hesitation, Jack said, “I'll take you there. My car is parked nearby.” When they arrived at the hospital, Jack insisted on staying until Emily's mother was stabilized.
Weeks later, Emily's mother made a full recovery. Wanting to repay Jack's kindness, Emily decided to do something for his dream.

【答案】Dear Peter,
I am glad to read your post looking for a partner to learn about Chinese traditional festivals. As a Chinese, I really appreciate and welcome foreigners just like you. Undoubtedly, I would be your perfect choice.
Being a native Chinese, I deeply loved and was familiar with Chinese traditional culture from childhood. And traditional festivals are treasures in it. If we become friends, I will introduce the origin and customs of them in detail, especially the three most important ones: Spring Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival.
Please let me know how we can keep in touch.
Yours,
Lihua

【答案】
Then, Emily rang up Jack with a proposal. “I really appreciate what you have done for me. Without your help, my mother couldn’t have recovered. My family means so much to me.” Emily said, with tears in her eyes, “In return for your help, I also want to do something for you, Jack. Let me host a photography exhibition for you, showing the beauty you had captured through your camera over the years.” When listening this, Jack was very amazed and grateful. He was deeply moved by Emily’s suggestion.
Emily spent countless hours working on the exhibition. Despite the difficulties ahead, she was full of strength and confidence in her hearts. Tired as she was, she felt she had great passion for the exhibition. Because Emily knew that were it not for Jack’s help, her mother may couldn’t have survived that day. The two strangers tried their best to help each other. Finally, the exhibition was a great success. Jack was in tears because his dream came true. It was love that makes the world go around, which Emily felt deep in her heart.
