B While other artists might use watercolors or oil paints, Mbongeni Buthelezi uses waste plastics to create portraits (肖像) at his studio in Booysens, Johannesburg. His medium is the plastie litter he collects from local rubbish dumps and city streets. “Animals are dying and fish in the ocean are dying— because of this material. It is we humans that need to take responsibility,” said the 56- year- old artist. Over the past three decades, Buthelezi has been using his works to both highlight and address the issue. Buthelezi’s use of waste wasn’t always in defense of the environment. He first began using plastic litter because he couldn’t afford expensive oil paints while studying at the college. Then, he developed a unique technique of using an electric heat gun that produced hot air to melt (熔化) the plastic. According to Buthelezi, this is more environmentally friendly than using flames to melt plastic and doesn’t release noxious smoke and gases into the atmosphere. His artistic process involves melting down pieces of plastic onto a thick plastic background often in more than one layer (层) to create complex textures and color combinations. He calls the process simple and random, but believes that the final pieces speak for themselves. “I’m interested in finding the details in the painting, but also see the whole story as you view it from afar,” he says. Buthelezi also uses his art as a vehicle to tell important stories about South Africa and the difficulties of life in South Africa’s townships. In 2010, online magazine Live Out Loud said his art “reflects humanity’s often harmful impact on the environment, but his original use of waste objects to picture an often forgotten group of people truly sets him apart”. His paintings have been exhibited in South Africa, as well as Germany, the US, and Holland, for years. 4. Why did Buthelezi originally use waste plastics for his art? A. To make his works eye-catching. B. To develop his own artistic style. C. To draw attention to plastic pollution. D. To reduce the cost of creating art. 5. What does the underlined word “noxious” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Poisonous. B. Burning. C. Floating. D. Heavy. 6. How does Buthelezi create his artworks on a thick plastic surface? A. He applies brightly painted plastic. B. He combines plastic with watercolors. C. He layers the melted pieces of waste plastic. D. He uses glue to stick the plastic litter together. 7. What can be inferred about Buthelezi’s works? A. They cover limited subjects. B. They have been well received. C. They have sold well at home and abroad. D. They are less expressive of poor people’s life. C Some people might think that the consequences of having to avoid heights are insignificant. But imagine you’re invited to a job interview on the 16th floor of a city office block, or that your kids are asking for a family trip to go rope- climbing. What do you do in such a situation if you are a person with acrophobia — an extreme fear of heights? Do you miss out on that job? Do you make excuses to your kids? Many of the symptoms of acrophobia are shared with other anxiety disorders. These include physical symptoms such as shaking, sweating, a racing heart, difficulty breathing, sickness and dizziness. Individuals with acrophobia typically feel intense fear and worry around heights, and tend to avoid them as a result. Some degree of concern about heights is common. Many animals and human babies show an inborn avoidance of a sharp drop, even before they’ve had any real experience of heights. Evolutionary (进化论的) accounts argue that we are all born with this fear because avoiding heights helps to keep us safe. A problem arises only when this unease around dangerous heights starts to limit daily life. Acrophobia might develop for several reasons. First, a scary event, such as falling out of a tree, may contribute to a person developing acrophobia. Some people who tend to be anxious and have severe reactions to stressful situations are also more likely to develop acrophobia because of the high levels of stress associated with being in high places where there is always some risk involved. Finally, genetics (遗传学) always plays an important role in the development of this acrophobia. People who have a family history of acrophobia are more likely to develop it themselves. Like other specific fears, acrophobia is treatable with psychological treatment (psychotherapy) such as exposure therapy, virtual reality exposure therapy and cognitive (认知的) behavioral therapy, which are proved to be effective in managing it. 8. Why does the author raise some questions in paragraph 1? A. To evaluate height-related activities. B. To draw our attention to acrophobia. C. To predict the results of avoiding heights. D. To stress the importance of decision- making. 9. What can we know about human babies’ fear of heights? A. It is abnormal. B. It is natural. C. It is taught by their parents. D. It is acquired by themselves. 10. Which is most related to a family history of acrophobia? A. Genetic effects. B. Accidental events. C. Family conditions. D. Neighborly relations. 11. What will the author probably discuss after the last paragraph? A. More causes of fear of heights. B. The ways to overcome acrophobia. C. The negative aspects related to fears. D. Risks of developing an extreme fear of heights. D Agricultural landscapes in tropical regions often consist of a mosaic (马赛克图) of different types of land use. Yet little is known about how people make use of these different ecosystems, with their particular plant communities. Researchers from Madagascar carried out a Malagasy research project at the University of Gottingen. They talked with 320 households and asked them about their use and the benefits of the main types of land. When considering biodiversity, forests often get the most attention. But this research shows that rural households use a wide range of plant species and services provided by many nearby ecosystem types. 285 plant species, almost half of which are found only in Madagascar, are used for food, feed for animals, medicine, construction and basketwork. The study shows that each of the land-use types provides a unique set of ecosystem services for rural households. The results were published in the journal Ambio. The researchers chose six types of land: old-growth forests, small forest plots, vanilla (香草) agroforests, woody fallows (休耕地), herbaceous fallows and rice fields. The interview s show that old-growth forests and forest plots are important for water regulation. Fallow land and vanilla agroforests provide food, medicine and animal feed. People collect the most plants from woody fallow areas for varying purposes, which were previously regarded as useless. In contrast, they use plants from forest plots for building and basketwork. Multiple land-use types are thus complementary (互补的) for providing ecosystem services to local communities, with fallow lands being particularly important. The findings are important to nature conservation: “It is important not just to consider the conservation of the impressive diversity of species on Madagascar, but also the benefits of this species richness for the local population, when designing conservation and development strategies,” says first author Dr. Estelle Raveloaritiana, whose PhD research was part of this project. 12. How did the researchers carry out the study? A. By conducting interviews. B. By making an observation. C. By analyzing typical cases. D. By collecting previous records. 13. What do the researchers discover about the woody fallows? A. They were deserted areas. B. They provide only firewood. C. They contribute less to farmers. D. They used to be hugely undervalued. 14. What does Estelle suggest policy makers do with biodiversity conservation? A. Give it the highest priority. B. Grow catch crops on fallow lands. C. Balance it with local people’s needs. D. Strengthen biological safety education. 15. What’s the best title for the text? A. Ways plant species restore themselves B. Composition of agricultural landscapes C. Natural resources rural households depend on D. Complementary uses of tropical mosaic landscapes In a fast-paced world, stress and mental tiredness seem common. John had a good job and had just been asked to go on a business trip to another city and would be gone for several days. It was decided that Mary needed an outing and would go along too. They hired a baby-sitter to care for the children and made the trip, returning home a little earlier than they had planned. As they drove into their hometown feeling glad to be back, they noticed smoke, and they went off their usual route to see what it was. They found a home in flames. Mary said, “Oh well, it isn’t our fire. Let’s go home.” But John drove closer and screamed, “That home belongs to Fred Jones who works at the plant. He wouldn’t be off work yet. Maybe there is something we could do.” John drove up and stopped. They were both horror-stricken to see the whole house in flames. A woman on the lawn (草坪) was madly screaming, “The children! Get the children!” John grabbed her by the shoulder, saying, “Get a hold of yourself and tell us where the children are!” “In the basement,” wept the woman,“ down, the hall and to the left.” In spite of Mary’s protests, John wetted his clothes under the water pipe, put his wet handkerchief on his head and headed for the basement which was full of smoke and burning hot. He found the door, walked down the stairs and grabbed two badly frightened children, holding one under each arm. As he left, he could hear some more crying. He hurriedly started back asking how many more children were down there. They told him two more. Mary grabbed his arm and shouted, “John! Don’t go back! You’ll be killed! That house will collapse in any second!” But John shook his wife off and went back to the basement. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The baby-sitter had left John’s children at this home while she did some shopping. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2024年普通高等学校招生全国统一考试模拟试题 英语(一) 本试题卷共8页。 1. His artistic process involves melting down pieces of plastic onto a thick plastic background, often in more than one layer (层) to create complex textures and color combinations. D 5. A 6. C 7. 根据文章第二段中的“He first began using plastic litter because he couldn’t afford expensive oil paints while studying at the college.(他最初开始使用塑料垃圾是因为他在大学学习时买不起昂贵的油画颜料。)” 故选A。 根据文章第三段中的“His artistic process involves melting down pieces of plastic onto a thick plastic background, often in more than one layer (层) to create complex textures and color combinations.(他的艺术过程包括将塑料碎片融化到厚厚的塑料背景上,通常不止一层,以创造复杂的纹理和颜色组合。)” 根据文章最后一段中的“His paintings have been exhibited in South Africa, as well as Germany, the US, and Holland, for years.(多年来,他的画作曾在南非、德国、美国和荷兰展出。)” B。 C Some people might think that the consequences of having to avoid heights are insignificant. B 9. B 10. A 11. 根据第一段“Some people might think that the consequences of having to avoid heights are insignificant. (有些人可能认为不得不避免高度的后果是微不足道的。但想象一下,你被邀请去参加一个在城市办公大楼16楼举行的工作面试,或者你的孩子要求全家去爬绳。如果你是一个有恐高症的人,在这种情况下你会怎么做?你错过那份工作了吗?你会给你的孩子找借口吗?)”可知,作者在第1段提出了一些问题是为了引起我们对恐高症的注意。故选B。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Many animals and human babies show an inborn avoidance of a sharp drop, even before they’ve had any real experience of heights.(许多动物和人类的婴儿,甚至在他们有任何真正的高度体验之前,就表现出对急剧下降的先天回避)”可知,人类婴儿的恐高症是自然的。 根据倒数第二段“Finally, genetics (遗传学) always plays an important role in the development of this acrophobia. People who have a family history of acrophobia are more likely to develop it themselves.(最后,基因在恐高症的发展中起着重要的作用。有恐高家族史的人更有可能自己患上恐高症)”可知,遗传影响与恐高症家族史最相关。故选A。 根据最后一段“Like other specific fears, acrophobia is treatable with psychological treatment (psychotherapy) such as exposure therapy, virtual reality exposure therapy and cognitive (认知的) behavioral therapy, which are proved to be effective in managing it.(与其他特定的恐惧一样,恐高症可以通过心理疗法来治疗,如暴露疗法、虚拟现实暴露疗法和认知行为疗法,这些疗法被证明对控制恐高症是有效的)”可知,在最后一段之后,作者可能会讨论克服恐高症的方法。故选B。 D Agricultural landscapes in tropical regions often consist of a mosaic (马赛克图) of different types of land use. Complementary uses of tropical mosaic landscapes 【答案】12. A 13. D 14. C 15. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】But John shook his wife off and went back to the basement. It was after what seemed like a century that he found both children at last and started back. Because of the thick smoke, they three were all coughing and he bent low to get as much available air as he could. At that moment, John seemed to feel something familiar in his arms. As he climbed up the endless steps, the feeling became much stronger. Considering the emergency, he set aside his thoughts. Fortunately, John came out of the burning house with the two children. The baby-sitter had left John’s children at this home while she did some shopping. As John stepped into the sunlight, he was shocked to see his own son and daughter clinging to him. Relief and disbelief washed over him. Mary rushed forward with tears in her eyes, hugging them all tightly. The woman who had been on the lawn ran to them, saying thanks to them. It became clear that the baby-sitter, unaware of the impending disaster, had left the children at a neighbor’s house. Exhausted but thankful, John and Mary knew that they’d narrowly escaped a family tragedy by John’s brave and selfless act.
