1. It was a small town with nice landscapes that attracted a lot of rich people to live in. Ming was also attracted by the scenic spots of the town. But he had little money, so he rented a cheap house after he arrived. But what drew his attention most here was those wealthy people. So he took up a job to sell cell phones. But his cell phones were not good in quality.
One day, Ming’s pocket was empty again and wanted to earn money. Luckily, there was still a phone in his pocket to sell. Soon enough, he spotted a target—a seemingly wealthy middle-aged man in an old jacket. Ming came up to him and smiled politely, saying, “Hey, friend...” But the man was very cautious and asked, “What’s up?”
Ming said to him immediately, “Friend, I have a phone. I bought it at 5,000 yuan. But now I could sell it to you at only 3,000 yuan.” The man seemed uninterested in his phone and wanted to go away. Ming stopped him and said, “What about 2,000 yuan?” the man shouted at him, “What do you want to do with me?”
Ming immediately put up a poor face and hugged the man’s legs, crying to him, “Oh, my dear friend! Only 1,000 yuan, is it OK?” Ming began pouring out his “sad story” as he was crying. The man, after seeing this, felt a little bit moved and put his hands into his pocket. Then he took out 1,000 yuan to Ming and took the phone away.
After earning 1,000 yuan, Ming felt happy. As he felt hungry, he went to a small restaurant to have lunch. Ming ordered several dishes and handed over a note of 100 yuan to the cashier. The cashier stared at the banknote (钞票) for quite a while, as if checking if it was a fake note (假币), and then said to Ming, “Sorry, I could not find the change for you for the moment. Please wait a minute.” Then he went away. Staying in the restaurant without anything to do, Ming sat at a table and started to watch TV. After all, his cheap-rented house had no TV.

As I played, the woman with the broom swept her way right next to me.She stopped sweeping and leaned on her broom, smiling at me.She appeared to be homeless with dirty mismatched clothes.
"You sure play beautiful music,” she said.“I think my friend would like your music.I want to hire you to play for her.” She pointed to the lone figure staring out at the ocean, then produced a few coins from her pocket.“I don’t have much, and I know you’re worth a lot, but if I give this to you, will you play a song for her? She’s going through a lot.I know the music will make her feel better.”
I told her I’d be happy to play for free.
As we walked over to her friend, the Broom Lady told me that her friend had not talked for weeks. We approached, and the Broom Lady introduced me,“Annie,I got you a present to cheer you up.It’s a guitar man who is going to play a song specially for you.”
Annie didn’t move. She was wearing dark sunglasses and had an old coat pulled up to cover most of her face.
I sat next to Annie and played. As I played I put every thought into having good things happen for this woman.I played for quite a while.
Suddenly,Annie turned toward me and said,“You make it so beautiful.I can feel it inside my heart.”

3. Three months later was the Middle School Championship Baseball Game of the spring season! The winners would all get trophies (奖杯), Jonas was determined to bring home a trophy to put on his shelf for he had never won one before.
He insisted on practicing in the stadium with friends every day. Day in and day out, the gloves became worn-out. Jonas thought, “I want a pair of new baseball gloves for better practice!“
Jonas passed by a store and saw a pair of delicate gloves, which cost thirty-five dollars. But when Jonas asked for the new baseball gloves, his mother only sighed. “Your birthday isn’tuntil July, ” she said. “If you want the gloves sooner than that, you will have to buy it yourself. If you want something, earn it by yourself. ”
Jonas thought hard. He was too young to drive to work like Dad, and he couldn’t turn his bedroom into an office to work at home like Mom. He went to his favorite thinking spot to look at the bird feeder in his back yard.
As Jonas was thinking about getting a job, it began to snow. At first there were only a few flakes (雪花), but soon the ground turned white.
“I know!” cried Jonas. “I’ll shovel (铲) the sidewalks on snow days. If I’m fast, I can do a lot of houses and make a lot of money. ”
So Jonas put on his warmest sweater and fastened the button of his winter coat. He also added scarf, gloves and a hat. Then he went into the garage to grab a shovel.
Jonas started next door. He rang the bell and asked Mr. Travers if he would like his sidewalks shoveled. “Yes,” said Mr. Travers. “But you should wait until it stops snowing before you start or you will have to do it twice.”

4. Walter has left office. His wife is dead, and he has no children. He lives a quiet life. But he has a job for a few days during Christmas every year.
He is a Santa in a big department store. Walter goes to the toy department and changes into his red Santa clothes, a red hat and big black boots (靴子). All day he sits in the toy department. Children come with their parents. They tell Santa what they want for Christmas. Most children want toys like video games, bikes, robots and fairy dolls.
Walter remembers one Christmas. It was 9:00 p.m. and the store was closing when there came a small boy and his mother. They were walking quickly towards him. “I know it is late, but please let my son talk to you,” said the woman. The woman and the boy looked tired. Their clothes were old and cheap.
Walter was tired too, but he is a kind man. “Of course,” he said in his Santa voice. “Come here and tell me what you want for Christmas.” The little boy spoke very quietly. Walter couldn’t hear him. “Santa is getting old. He doesn’t hear so well. Come closer and tell me again,” he said happily. The little boy came very close and said, “Santa, please bring me a grandfather for Christmas.”
Walter was surprised. He looked at the little boy’s mother. “Yes,” she said. “Timmy wants a grandfather for Christmas.”
“Why do you want a grandfather for Christmas, Timmy?” asked Walter.
“My Dad is dead. I don’t want a new dad. But it’s only Mom and me. It’s quiet. So I would like a grandfather.”

5. Rebecca stretched her tired back. “That’s the last seedling (树苗), Pa. Have we planted enough?”
Pa walked to the end of the row of cottonwood seedlings. “No,” he said. “We have to plant trees all the way to that rock over there. We’ll need about twenty more seedlings.”
“I’ll get the seedlings,” offered Rebecca. She longed to cool her feet in the shallow river running through the cotton field.
“You’d better let me go, Miss Petticoats,” teased her twin brother, William. “There are dangers all over this prairie (草原).”
“You may both go,” said Pa. “But hurry back. I’d like to finish before sundown.”
They went across the shallow river to a sandbar where small cottonwood seedlings grew.
Gently, they pulled the seedlings from the sand.
“There! That’s twenty, with a few to spare,” said Rebecca.
“OK,” said William. He led the way to the riverbank, and then stopped. “Look! That’s the dugout (防空洞) we had lived in before we moved here last year,” he said, pointing to a hole on the grassy riverbank.
“Come on, let’s go inside.”
“No,” Rebecca said, “Pa is waiting. Besides, it’s hard to tell what’s in it.”
“Then you go back,” said William, handing the seedlings to Rebecca. I’ll catch up.” He ran to the dugout and stepped inside.
Rebecca wrapped the seedlings in her long apron (围裙) and began to walk. Suddenly she froze in her tracks.
A huge rattlesnake (响尾蛇) moved along the riverbank.
It stopped right in front of the dugout and lay still, coiling up on the warm sunny bank.
“William!” Rebecca shouted. “Don’t come out!”
“Huh?” William’s face appeared at a tiny window beside the door of the dugout.
Rebecca pointed at the rattler. William’s face paled when he saw the snake blocking the doorway. He turned desperate eyes toward Rebecca, and then he glanced behind himself. Rebecca knew what he was thinking: “Were there more snakes waiting in the shadowy corners of the dugout?”
Rebecca’s mind raced, trying to think of a way to get William out of there. An idea popped into her head. It was their only hope. It was risky, but it was the only hope.
“Don’t move,” she said to William in a soft voice. “When I say NOW, you run out of there as fast as you can.”
Rebecca removed the skirt-like petticoat (衬裙) from beneath her dress, and then dipped it into the river. She squeezed out some of the water, and then climbed to the top of the bank, directly above the dugout’s opening.
Paragraph 1:
“Get ready to run, William,” she said, keeping an eye on the motionless snake.

6. I always had a dream deep in my heart for many years. I was a little girl again, rushing about and trying to get ready for school.
“Hurry up! You’ll be late for school,” my mother called to me.
“I am hurrying, Mom! What did I do with my books?”
Deep inside I knew where the dream came from. It was about something unfinished in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all, I hoped to receive my diploma (毕业证) some day. That seemed more attractive even than getting married.
But at 15, I had to left school because my parents couldn’t pay for the tuition (学费). My hope of getting a diploma was dead. Soon, I married and had three children, and I thought, “There goes my diploma.”
Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis (幼年型关节炎) in her hands and feet, which made it impossible for her to learn in a normal classroom. I felt really sorry for her and I didn’t want her to live her life without education. I didn’t give up the hope of her being back to school in some way.
One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses. “That’s the answer,” I said to myself. “Linda always feels better in the evening, so I’ll just sign her up for (报名) night school.”
Linda was busy filling in enrollment (入学) forms when the secretary said, “Mrs. Schantz, why don’t you come back to school?”
I laughed, “There’s no way! I’m 55!” But be insisted (坚持), and signed me up for classes in English and art. “This is only a try,” I said, but be just smiled. So, I told myself to try for just a term and to see if it would work Anyway, my dream was still there in my heart for so many years.

7. Have you ever had to overcome an extreme challenge in your life?
My teenage years had been insane. From schoolwork to athletics, I had always been running around. Everything was so difficult.
Throughout my hectic teenage years I have been faced with many extreme challenges that have required extreme focus and hard work to overcome. If it hadn't been for hard work, none of these challenges that I faced would have been conquered.
Two years ago, when I was a freshman in high school, I dealt with an extremely significant injury. This took place in my tennis tournament in January. In the climax of my match, I jolted my back to the left and soon after felt a sharp, painful shock run through my spine. I knew at that difficult moment I seriously injured my back. I was rushed off the court and my parents made an appointment with an orthopedist (矫形外科医生) for the next morning.
I walked into the office extremely nervous and suffering from excruciating pain. My tennis season for school started in three months and I absolutely needed to build up the strength.
After about twenty minutes of waiting in the office, which felt like an eternity, the doctor walked in to examine my Xrays. With a sorrowful face, the doctor looked into mine and my mother's eyes and said," There is a 50/50 chance that Lucas will be able to participate in this years tennis season. Lucas broke his L5 vertebrae in his lower back." My heart dropped and I felt a sadness come over me. The doctor said that I would be sitting out of physical activity for two and a half to three months.
Those three months were the longest three months of my life. I was so eager to get back to practices for the season. Every day, I would think about how it was going to be when I was fully healthy. I asked myself," Am I going to be out of shape? Should I even play this year? I probably won't have a successful season."
From that dreadful day on, I decided that I was going to put in the work to be back in top form and have a successful season.
Paragraph 1:
After I got the" all clear" from my orthopedist I was going to get to work.

Paragraph 2:
My hard work proved to be very effective.

Only by discovering what we do best can we hope to reach our goals and truly make a difference. Finally, I am not afraid of failure. I love music, and I love the feeling of playing music in front of the audience. Of all the instruments, the delicate yet powerful sound a piano makes impresses me most. It's clear that I have a long way to go before I realize my dream. Therefore, I will practice every day as long as time permits and learn as many songs as I can.

But after a while, he thought that the police was not to catch him, so he stayed in the restaurant and pretended to know nothing.
The police car stopped before the small restaurant and two policemen came out of the car and arrested Ming. Ming could hardly struggle. Early in the morning I went to the ocean beach to play my guitar. The usually crowded beach was deserted except for two people. On one side of the boardwalk (木板人行道)was a woman who was cleaning the beach with a broom;on the other side was a lone figure sitting and staring at the sea.I chose a spot between them and began to play.

【答案】She took off her sunglasses. I saw a beautiful face with two seemingly nervous but still beautiful eyes. “ Can we do it together?” She asked, “I could sing”. Then we both put our heart into the harmony of the combination of her clear singing and the music from my guitar as if we were a band. What a beautiful picture on the ocean beach. If there were a photographer passing by, I am sure he would not miss the opportunity to take a picture.
When I stopped playing and looked up,I was shocked to see a small crowed around us. They were watching and listening attentively to us. From the expression on their face I know they were absorbed in it. The women bowed to me and thanked the crowd and left with firm steps, leaving me sitting there thinking how great music can be.

“I’ll be back!” said Jonas. He went around the block to see who would like their walks shoveled after the storm. He had eight customers by the time he got back to his own house.

【答案】 When it stopped snowing, Jonas grabbed his shovel and got to work. Standing on Mr Traver’s sidewalks, initially, Jonas was sort of clumsy, but soon he became so expert that it took only 20 minutes to shovel the snow to the sides of the road. When Mr Travers handed Jonas a 5-dollar bill with satisfaction, his face cracked into a smile. Soaked with sweat, he even took off his winter clothes. Waving goodbye, Jonas headed for the second client’s, doing the work in the same order he talked to his neighbors. 3 hours flashed by before he knew it. With all the work finished, each neighbour gave him a thumb-up, as well as the reward, which added up to 40 dollars.
Tired but happy, Jonas looked at the forty dollars earned from his work. It was enough for the gloves. Hardly had Jonas taken the new baseball gloves in the store when he began to practice. His perfect performance won the opportunity to take part in the championship Baseball Game. Hard practice paid off, he and his friends won the first prize. When he took his trophy home and put it on his shelf, his mother spotted he had become a maturer teenager, who could cope with problems life held in store for him.

Drawing a deep breath, she made a swift movement and cast the heavy petticoat on top of the rattlesnake. “NOW! ” she shouted to William as the snake began to move. Willian jumped over the covered snake and raced as fast as he could before he stopped and turned around. Rebecca was right behind him.
Paragraph 2:
“Are you OK?” he asked, breathing heavily. Rebecca nodded. Her heart almost missed a beat. She was so blessed that they managed to escape. Scooping up Rebecca in his arms, “Thanks, sister. I’d have done the same for you back there,” said William. Rebecca said with a grin, “You couldn’t have, for you don’t wear petticoat! ” Laughing, they headed for the woods, carrying the seedlings.

Going back to school again was amazing but it was no game. Sitting in a classroom full of kids was awkward, even if most of them were respectful and encouraging. During the day, I was still a busy married woman having lots of housework to do. In the evening, I was a hard-working student working on my courses. To my surprise, both Linda and I did very well in night school. I went back again the next term, and my grades slowly improved.
Luckily, Linda and I had each other through the time. When I was down, Linda encouraged me, “Mom, you can’t quit now!” And when she was down, I encouraged her. I have to say it was a time which was really hard on both of us. But neither of us gave up. At last, I got my diploma. To my surprise, almost all of my classmates voted for me to be the best student, and I got a $3,000 college scholarship. My dreams finally came true.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
After I got the" all clear" from my orthopedist I was going to get to work. Practices were going to start in two weeks and I was determined to get back on the court. My hunger for success made me play and work out for two hours every day before the season. Through practices, I would hit the gym and try to build up the strength that I had before the injury.
Paragraph 2:
My hard work proved to be very effective. I had the most successful season of my career. I made it to the finals. Although I truly wanted to win, I knew that it was a great accomplishment for me to be in that position even not in the first place. The injury was almost a good thing because I proved to myself that I am capable of achieving goals that I strive for, through hard work of course. That season was by far the most rewarding season of my career. I felt so accomplished at the end of the season. Hard work always pays off.
