Born in the 2000s, what do you think of your generation? Young, creative, connected, global smart, maybe good-looking? But what do other people think about your generation?
Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the phone than the world around you. They see you as the “face-down generation” and wonder how you will deal with school friends, and family. Are today’s teenagers too busy texting and taking selfies (自拍) to become successful in real life or “IRL”, as you would say?
Other adults worry that today’s youth are spoiled (宠坏) and don’t want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter parents” who were always there to do everything for them. So today’s young people seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
Does the face-down generation need a heads-up? Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They also seem to be willing to become leaders. More young people volunteer to serve their communities than ever. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to school.
So if you are one of them born in the 2000s, there’s reason to be hopeful about the future. Things are looking up for the face-down generation.
9. Why are young people born in the 2000s called “face-down generation”?
A. Because they are always busy with homework with their heads down.
B. Because they are not closely connected to the people around them.
C. Because they show great interest in the phone and use it too much.
D. Because they are not confident and feel shamed with themselves.
10. In the writer’s eyes, today’s teenagers ________.
A. are not creative because of the educational problem.
B. are willing to take part in many social activities.
C. are smarter and more good-looking than their parents.
D. are more successful and creative than their parents.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Parents should care more about their teenagers’ life and study.
B. Mobile phones are harmful to teenagers’ growth and development.
C. Teenagers don’t need to change themselves to meet adults’ standards.
D. Though the young people have some problems, their future is full of hope.
【答案】9. C 10. B 11. D

A lady wanted a birthday gift from her husband. For many months, she had liked a beautiful ring, and knowing her husband could afford it, she told him that was all she wanted. On the morning of the birthday, her husband told her how proud he was to have such a good wife, and how much he loved her. He gave her a beautiful gift package (盒). She opened it and found a dictionary. She raised her voice and said to her husband, “With all your money, you give me a dictionary?” After that, she left him.
Many years passed and the lady was very successful in business. She owned two large companies. She realized her husband was very old, so she thought perhaps she should go to visit him. But before she could, she received a letter telling her that he had died, and gave all of his possessions (财产) to her. She needed to come back and take care of the things.
When she arrived at his house, she was surprised to see the still new dictionary there, just as she had left it years before. With tears in her eyes, she opened it and began to turn the pages. A ring dropped from the dictionary to the floor and a card could be seen. She picked it up and found it was the ring she wanted in those days. And on the card was the date of her birth, and the words “LOVE YOU ALWAYS”.
Please remember sometimes the best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched, unless they are felt with your heart.

Born in the 2000s, what do you think of your generation? Young, creative, connected, global smart, maybe good-looking? But what do other people think about your generation?
Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the phone than the world around you. They see you as the “face-down generation” and wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family.
Well probably not.
C Because they show great interest in the phone and use it too much.
11 What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Parents should care more about their teenagers’ life and study.
B. Mobile phones are harmful to teenagers’ growth and development.
C. Teenagers don’t need to change themselves to meet adults’ standards.
D. Though the young people have some problems, their future is full of hope.
(D)
As the population in our country ages rapidly, we face great challenges (挑战). The good news is that there are many inventions to help the elderly.
Smart water meter (水表)
Community workers on Jiangsu Street in Shanghai have fixed smart water meters at the homes of elderly people living alone. The water meter will send an alarm to community workers if less than 0.01 m³ of water is used in 12 hours. That allows community workers to rush to check the situation of elderly people.
One- click service telephone
In Beijing’s Tongzhou District, community workers have fixed one- click service telephones for the elderly. With just a click on the phone, elderly people can call for help in an emergency (紧急情况).
Ren Xiuzhen, an 80- year- old woman, said her husband is in poor health. With the one- click service telephone, she can call 120 very quickly if she or her husband is in need.
Smart watch
For 61- year- old Sha Ruifang, a smart watch helps a lot. It allows her to go out without worrying too much about an unexpected situation.
Sha said once she was out with her family when she suddenly received a call from the smart elderly care control centre. They said they had discovered an unusual heartbeat (心跳) through the watch and asked her if she felt unwell.
After going to the hospital, Sha was told that there was a problem with her heart. And as the problem was discovered early, she only needed to take some medicine.
12. What does the underlined word “alarm” mean in the passage?
A. Medicine. B. Energy. C. Warning. D. Product.
13. How did the smart watch help Sha Ruifang?
A. It called the doctor for her. B. It sent an alarm to her family.

It is natural for young people to worship (崇拜) cool and good-looking young “idols (偶像)”. We spend a lot of time caring about them—even more time than we spend on our studies or work. We often wonder: What makes them so popular? ___36___
