Madelyn Florida It’s great that you like your stuff! Ask yourself whether you really value and use it, though, or whether you just want to put it aside. Rank (排列) what you have, from treasured to least. Maybe you’ll decide to let go of some lower-ranked things. To help you decide, try an experiment. Notice what you use over a month’s time. At the end of the month, you might consider giving away what you didn’t use. Knowing that your things will bring happiness to someone else may help you let them go. My parents argue a lot. I wish I could make them stop. It’s really worrying. Michal Massachusetts You aren’t alone. Many kids feel unwell when their parents argue. Adults disagree at times, just as kids do. It’s natural to wish you could make your parents stop arguing, but that isn’t your job. They must solve their own disagreements. If you feel unwell, fix your mind on things that’ll help you feel calm. Do activities you enjoy or write or draw to express how you feel. At a time when things are calm, tell your parents how you feel. You might say, “When I hear you arguing, I feel worried and afraid.” You can also talk things over with a school counselor (辅导员) or teacher. I am afraid of the dark, but I’m not sure why. Harper Maryland Lots of kids (and adults!) feel the same way you do. Try to understand the feeling better. You could ask yourself questions, like “When do I feel most afraid? Do noises or storms make it worse? Do I watch fearful movies that keep replaying in my mind?” Make a list of what you think can be fearful about the dark. Then think about whether you really need to fear those things. Talk with a parent about the things on your list, too, and ways to deal with them. For example, if you fear not to being able to see what’s around you, maybe you can use a flashlight to remind yourself that a room is safe. 31. The teenager is the CEO of Me the Bees Lemonade. She is causing quite a buzz. She has appeared on Good Morning America, NBC News, and in Forbes and Time magazine for her business success. She has even been invited to the White House twice. Mikail a started her lemonade business when, at the age of four, she was stung (叮) by two bees in one week. However, she didn’t become afraid of bees. Instead, encouraged by her parents, she learned more about the insects and their important roles in the food cycle. At the same time, Mikaila’s family received a cookbook from her great grandmother and discovered an old recipe (食谱) for lemonade. Mikail had a thought that if she could make the lemonade with honey bought from local beekeepers, she could do her best to help the bee population, which was a dream for her. That fall, Mikaila’s mom and dad suggested she should make the lemonade for a children’s business competition in her hometown of Austin, Texas. The product was a success and, with that, Me the Bees Lemonade was born. Over the past ten years, Me the Bees Lemonade has sold 1 million bottles across 1,000 stores in the U. S. In 2017, Mikail a set up her own non- profit (利润) organization, the Healthy Hive Foundation, to carry on research, education and protection projects for honey bees. What’s more, Me the Bees Lemonade continues to donate 10 percent of all profits to help protect bees. Along the way, Mikail a has partnered with companies like Microsoft to use new technologies that have helped to realize her dream. That’s certainly no easy success for a teen. But Mikail a isn’t stopping there. In between her studies, she spends her time managing her business, traveling to give speeches and coming up with new product ideas. Mikail a has also created a guide for young people. It talks about her business and tips for finding the right technology to make big ideas happen. “My generation, we’re the future,” Mikail a says. “If we start at a young age doing something, donating back and giving back, then, when we grow up, we can do that on a larger scale.” Through technology, hard work and the kind of dream— big ideas only a kid could have, along with the support of her family, Mikail a proves that—— just like bees—— ▲ . 34. There have been many experiments with colour since it was discovered in 1666. How does colour influence your mood? Let’s take a deeper dive into colour psychology. Colour Influences on Mood Colour has more influence in our lives than we realize. It can influence our minds, bodies, and moods. Colours close to the red spectrum (光谱) are warmer colours, including red, orange, and yellow. These warm colours suggest feelings of warmth, comfort, anger and hostility (敌意). While blue colours like purple and green are known for suggesting feelings of calm, sadness, or coldness. Colour Therapy Colour Psychology can also be used as a therapy. In fact, old cultures practiced something called Chromotherapy, or light medicine, which uses colours to cure. However, even though some psychologists look at colour therapy doubtfully, it is still used today in some medical practices. Research has shown that the “mood-changing effect” of colour may not last (持续) long in many cases. A blue room may cause feelings of calm at the beginning, but the effect disappears after a short period. Studies have also shown that colour can influence your performance. A study was done in six experiments using 71 college students who were given a number. Each number was coloured red, green, or black before taking a five-minute test. Of those uncovered to the colour red before taking an exam, it was shown to harm their performance in the test. Colour in Consumption (消费) We also see colour psychology in advertising suggesting that some colours or shades can have a wide influence, improving our moods or causing worries. However, the colour of the products we buy may have something to do with our personality and why we choose the product. From the clothes we wear, to the car we drive-the colour can tell about how people notice us. For example, some realize the colour black is powerful. When we think of expensive cars, most of them are black. Colour has played an important part in sending information and even influencing our decisions. Interest in colour psychology is growing, and there is still a lot to learn how it can influence our moods, buys, and performance. 38. According to the passage, what is colour psychology? A. It studies how scientists are influenced by different colours. B. It studies how colours influence human’s actions and moods. C. It studies how to divide colours into different groups. D. People in old times knew nothing about colour therapy. C. The influence of colour therapy may not last long. D. Red can help students get good marks in exams. 40. What can we infer from the passage? A. We can tell a person’s personality according to their preferred colour. B. Most customers would like to buy black cars instead of white ones. C. The colour of products has something to do with their product quality. D. Most companies prefer to use the colour black in the advertisements. 41. Grandpa’s big hand feels warm and safe. My grandpa lives at the top of a mountain all by himself. There are no other children here. So sometimes I go into the woods with Bandit and pretend (假装) that I am Alex, the Adventurer. I must stay near the small path and I can’t go past the big rock. This way, Grandpa can always see me from the yard. As we hike toward the big rock, I hold Grandpa’s hand tighter. Cack-cack-cack-cack! There’s that sound! The sound is even louder on the other side of the rock. I stop and look back. My face must not look so brave, because Grandpa says, “It’s all right, just a little further.” Crunch! Crunch! My feet step on the dead leaves as I get closer. Suddenly it becomes quiet. I hear Grandpa whisper, “Just sit down and watch.” I sit, holding on to my knees. My heart is beating fast. I do not see any animals. You can see a long way into the forest when there are no leaves. I look up. The trees look like skeletons against the sky. Nothing there. Just ahead of me there is a big puddle (水坑). Cack-cack-cack! The sound becomes terribly loud in front of me. My eyes move fast to the puddle. Several pairs of golden eyes are sticking up out of the water! Long brown legs float behind. “Frogs!” I shout. Grandpa sits down beside me. “These are wood frogs,” he explains. They’re calling to each other because it’s time for them to lay eggs. They hide all year, except for this short time.” He points at a big pile of frog eggs in the puddle. They look like jelly bubbles. As I head back up the small path, holding Grandpa’s hand, I look back and smile. There’s something special in Grandpa’s woods. 42. Personality is the pattern of feelings, thoughts and behavior shown through people’s lives. It makes them different from others. Each person’s personality is made up of different personality characters such as kindness or shyness. These characters decide how people behave in different situations. For example, if someone shy is served the wrong meal in a restaurant, he probably won’t say anything. On the other hand, someone outgoing will probably complain and get the meal he ordered. Where does your personality come from? The human brain is like a computer because it controls the human body just as a computer controls a robot. However, humans aren’t robots! We have personalities. The human brain has a special part giving us personality and allowing us to think for ourselves, unlike a computer. This part of the brain is called the mind. Personality types Clearly scientists cannot study the mind by looking inside someone’s brain! All they would see is blood and grey matter. To study the mind, scientists have to study human behavior. This includes watching people carefully and organizing personality tests like this one: 1. Do you think you’re pretty or good-looking? 2. Would you rather read a book or go to a party? 3. Do you have a large group of friends or just one or two close friends? 4. Do you mind talking in public or does it scare you? 5. Are you messy or neat? 6. Do you plan your work well or do you do things at the last minute? Scientists believe that answers to these types of questions tell us something about a person’s personality characters. After asking thousands of people thousands of questions, they’ve found that some personality characters seem to go together. This has led scientists to believe that there’re certain personality types. For example, shy people are often quiet. They have an introverted (内向的) personality type. The opposite is an extroverted (外向的) personality type — people who are outgoing, talkative and like being around other people. 71. What is personality? ______________________________________________________________ 72. Why is the human brain like a computer? _______________________________________________________________ 73. How do scientists study human behavior? _______________________________________________________________ 74. 31. Colour in Consumption (消费) We also see colour psychology in advertising, suggesting that some colours or shades can have a wide influence, improving our moods or causing worries. D.
