However, beyond these well-known places, Shanghai is literally one of the most suitable cities in China for leisurely urban strolls, i. e. city walk. Now, let’s take a look at several exceptionally famous roads in Shanghai and savor a rather pleasant city walk together under the fantastic wutong trees.
Anfu Rd.

Along the street, you’ll find a variety of brands including fashion streetwear labels, boutiques, semi-open brunch restaurants, afternoon tea spots, handmade jewelry stores, fragrance shops, vintage boutiques, beauty pop-up stores, bakeries, and more. Most of the shops adopt an industrial minimalist style for their interior decoration. Ordering a cup of coffee in 13DE MARZO and either waiting for it or taking it upstairs to browse through the clothes is a special experience that cannot be found in any shopping mall elsewhere.
Wukang Rd.
Wukang Road is hailed as one of the most European-style districts in central Shanghai, with former residences of celebrities like Ba Jin and cultural relics dotted along its path. The distinctive architecture includes the iconic Wukang Mansion, built in 1924 and resembling a gigantic sailing ship, which has become a popular destination for internet celebrities and visitors alike. Find a cozy artsy café on Wukang Road, sit by the window, and hold a cup of hot coffee in your hands. As you indulge in the luxury of doing nothing, savor the warmth of the winter sun glinting off the shiny wutong trees lining the road.
Huaihai Rd. (M)
Huaihai Road Middle in Shanghai is undoubtedly a favorite among the, younger generation, and it stands as one of the most vibrant commercial streets in the city. As you walk along this road, the wutong trees on both sides carry a unique romantic atmosphere that is quintessentially Shanghai. The diverse array of fashionable and trendy shops lining the roadside adds even more sophistication and charm to this path. There’s a giant croissant-shaped (可颂形状的) gym in HAUS NOWHERE along the street where you can take unique photos.
Sinan Rd.
As a cultural thoroughfare, Sinan Road boasts a rich history of celebrities whose stories are as precious as family heirlooms. Tracing the traces of time, one can glimpse the turbulent historical events that have shaped this place. The buildings along the way contain the Residence of Premier Zhou Enlai, Mei Lanfang’s former residence, Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s former residence, and so on. They encompass both traditional Shanghai lane houses and Western-style restaurants and bars. A single working-class woman named Christine left her child at home due to overtime work and found her son missing when she returned home. The police first refused to accept the report within 24 hours, and then the case made little progress. Five months later, the police suddenly told Christine that they had found her son and brought a large group of media to the train station to meet him.
Although Christine immediately recognized that the boy was not her son, the little boy insisted repeatedly that he was her son, and the police chief also tried to persuade her that she might not recognize him after being away from him for so long. As a result, newspapers were filled with news of the reunion of mother and son, and the Los Angeles police regained some face. However, based on the boy’s height, circumcision status, and the judgments of dentists and teachers, Christine was convinced that the child was definitely not hers. She hoped that the police would continue to search for her son, but her request was rejected, and she was even imprisoned in a mental hospital as a mental patient.
Christine then realized that many of the women there were imprisoned for opposing the police and would only be released if they promised not to cause any more trouble. Fortunately, Christine had the support of Pastor Gustav Briegleb, who had always hated the police. He helped Christine transform from a helpless woman into a fighter who stood in court and confronted the Los Angeles police. On the other hand, the whereabouts of her son gradually became clear with the arrest of a psychopathic killer. Her son had a chance to escape, but he resolutely returned to the killer’s farm to help another fallen partner, and from then on, there was no news of him. Christine spent her entire life searching for her son, but she never found him until her death. This true story filled with adversity and courage was adapted into a classic suspense film in 2008.
4. What was the initial response of the police when Christine reported her son missing?
A. They immediately began searching for the child.
B They declined to accept the report within one day.
C. They questioned Christine’s mental state.
D. They provided a full investigation from the start.
5. Why did Christine believe the boy presented to her by the police was not her son?
A. Because he didn’t look like her physically.
B. Because he didn’t recognize her immediately.
C. Because some of his physical features didn’t fit.
D. Because the police chief told her she might not recognize him.
6. What was the fate of Christine after she insisted that the boy was not her son?
A She was praised. B. She was released.
C. She was imprisoned. D. She was supported.
7. What can be inferred about Christine’s son from the passage?
A. He managed to escape from the psychopathic killer and lived a happy life.
B. He bravely returned to help another victim, but his fate remained unknown.
C. He was eventually found alive and reunited with Christine.
D. He had been living with the killer all along, unaware of his true identity.

I’ve started to hate traveling. When my friends heard me say that, they were all shocked and confused, because I’m an absolute travel fanatic. It’s not that I dislike traveling itself; rather, I dislike the new definition that modern people have given to it, a fundamentally flawed understanding of tourism. What I hate most during every trip is hearing, “This place is perfect for photos, take a few for me.” It seems our travels have become nothing more than check-ins and photo sessions.
Traveling is no longer about admiring scenery, marveling at the magnificent landscapes of our motherland, or experiencing new lifestyles. Instead, I see crowds of people snapping pictures and checking off locations, hardly anyone pausing to genuinely soak in the sights and experiences with their own eyes and hearts. The once poetic journey has transformed into the so-called modern travel trilogy: approach, photograph, leave. The sole purpose of traveling now seems to be posting on social media, showing off to everyone, and immersing oneself in a world constructed solely by one’s own posts. The goal of traveling has shifted to merely visiting check-in spots and completing the task of “checking in”.
Travel has changed, and so have many aspects of our lives. We experience too little genuine joy within. I’ve asked my students why they study, and almost all of them answer that it’s to be admitted into a good university, seek a good job, and earn a lot of money. I don’t think these are wrong or even unnecessary aspirations, but where is our inner happiness and peace? When will we be able to travel for the sake of traveling, to learn for the sake of learning, to go shopping for the sake of going shopping and to preserve our authenticity? After all, we are human beings. How many of us are living day-to-day, going through the motions, turning life into a chore, a mere existence? We still have “poetry and distant horizons” to pursue. We must strive for what truly defines us as human, or we risk losing our humanity.
8. Which of the following word can best replace the underlined word “fanatic” in paragraph 1?
A. Journalist. B. Psychologist. C. Enthusiast. D. Artist.
9. What is the author’s main reason for hating traveling nowadays?
A. The inconvenience of modern transportation. B. The increasing cost of traveling.
C. The overcrowding of tourist attractions. D. The shift in people’s perception of traveling.
10. What is the author’s attitude towards the “modern travel trilogy”?
A. Favorable. B. Disapproving. C. Indifferent. D. Ambiguous.
11. What does the author imply in the passage?
A. The author regrets becoming a travel fanatic.
B. Modern society has lost touch with genuine experiences.
C. Traveling is no longer an enjoyable activity.
D The purpose of traveling has shifted to social media.
D
Three young American men were on a crowded train when they encountered a heavily armed terrorist. With little regard for their personal safety, they rushed the terrorist and controlled him. Only some people seem capable of this split-second form of heroism. Why some men rise to the occasion— and others don’t— has been a bit tricky to explain. Psychologists have explored this question through biological and personality psychology.
Of course, heroism and courage can appear in many forms, and men and women risk their reputations, health, and social standing to do what they think is right. When it comes to physically risky bravery, people assume that men will take the lead. There are sound biological reasons for this fixed image. One of the most common fears in men is that they’ll be outed as a coward (懦夫), and a man who fails to display physical courage will suffer damage to his reputation in a way that a woman will not. Throughout human history, attaining a position of high status or dominance among one’s peers (同龄人) has been the ticket that needs to get punched for men to attract mates and father children.
People tend to have an idea of what heroes are like. When rating the personalities of movie heroes, participants expected them to be more careful and hard-working, open to experience, agreeable, and emotionally stable than the average person! But some studies indicate that people who exhibit heroic behavior score high on personality usually associated with madmen: risk-taking, sensation seeking, coolness under stress, and a tendency to take over in social situations.
The study of the relationship between personality and heroism is at an early stage. Psychologists are still at a loss to predict in advance who will heroically step up when needed. Often, the hero is an otherwise ordinary person who finds himself in extraordinary circumstances. Meanwhile, some individuals trained to behave heroically might hesitate during a crisis. Future disasters will cry out for further acts of true heroism. Hopefully, the right mix of circumstances and personalities enable courage to carry the day.
12. How is the topic introduced in the first paragraph?
A. By giving an example. B. By presenting a concept.
C. By explaining a theory. D. By drawing a conclusion.
13. What do the underlined words “get punched” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Be purchased. B. Be gifted. C. Be obtained. D. Be abandoned.
14. Why is it difficult to predict who will act heroically in a crisis?
A. Heroes and ordinary people are always difficult to tell apart.
B. Heroism is a phenomenon influenced by numerous factors.
C. Unknown circumstances play a crucial role in heroic acts.
D. Individual personality is not a reliable indicator of heroism
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. How Are Heroes Trained? B. Who Are the True Heroes?
C. Why Are Heroes Essential? D. What Makes a Person Heroic?

Master the ABC Theory: Change Your Cognition and Say Goodbye to Negative Emotions
“Why am I so stupid? I did so poorly this time. I’m definitely going to fail in the future exams too. I’m ranked so low this time and I’m really finished. My English score is only around 110, so terrible and I can’t keep studying” ___16___ If so, why not give ABC theory a try and let yourself deeply understand your emotional and behavioral reactions, so you can make a change!
The ABC Theory in psychological theories is a fundamental concept within Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), first introduced by American psychologist Albert Ellis in the 1950s. This theory primarily serves to explain how human emotions and behaviors are influenced by our cognitions and interpretations of events. ___17___
A (Activating Event): Refers to the specific event or situation experienced by an individual, serving as the direct external stimulus that triggers subsequent reactions.
B (Belief): Contains an individual’s interpretation, evaluation, and beliefs regarding the activating event, including their core beliefs and automatic thoughts in specific contexts.
C (Consequence): Denotes the behavioral, and psychological outcomes resulting from these beliefs. ___18___
The ABC Theory emphasizes that it is not the activating event itself (A) but rather an individual’s beliefs and interpretations of these events (B) that give rise to their emotional and behavioral outcomes (C). ___19___ By challenging, and altering these irrational beliefs, emotional and behavioral improvements can be achieved. So when facing emotional distress, you can regulate your emotions by adjusting your cognitive patterns — altering your beliefs or perspectives on events to manage your emotions. ___20___
A. Are these beliefs common for you?
B. Are you confident and positive about your circumstances?
C. These examples all demonstrate the application of ABC theory in daily life.
D. Different beliefs lead to varying emotional responses and behavioral consequences.
E. Below is an explanation of the ABC Theory:
F. Thus, Ellis believed that most psychological problems stem from irrational beliefs.
G. What are you waiting for? Why not give it a try?

I liked sitting with my dad in his study every night when I was young after he came home from the office. I’d watch as he put his personal items away: his watch, wallet, comb and car keys would always occupy the same spot on the table every time. It was as if he could see invisible lines drawn specifically for these things, not a centimeter more or less.
What impressed me was Dad’s comb which was jade green. I heard he bought it when he married Mum, which made the comb two years older than I was. Every night, he would smile, hand me the comb and say, “Be a good girl and help Daddy clean it, OK?”
This task brought me such joy at the age of five. I would excitedly turn the tap on, and then brush the comb with a used toothbrush as hard as I could. Satisfied that I’d done a good job, I would proudly return the comb to Dad. He would smile at me and place the comb on top of his wallet.
Two years later, Dad left his sales job and started his own wholesale business. I started primary school. That was when things started to change. Dad’s business wasn’t doing so well, and our stable life started getting shaky. He didn’t come home as much as he used to — just a couple of times a week. And when he did come home, it was always late and I’d already be in bed. I started to get mad. Why didn’t he listen to Mum and just stick to his old job? Why took the risk and placed the whole family in trouble? Over the years, I stopped waiting for him to come home, and stopped going downstairs to check on him. Today, I’m no longer a kid.
Now I have grown up. I’ve graduated from college and got a job. Dad’s business has also started to get back on track. Things are better now. Yet the uncomfortable silence between Dad and me persisted. Two days before my birthday last year, Dad came home early. As usual, I helped him carry his bags into his study. When I turned to leave, he said, “Hey, would you like to help me clean my comb? ”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
Looking at him a while, I took the comb and headed to the sink. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
I handed the clean comb back to Dad. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

A single working-class woman named Christine left her child at home due to overtime work and found her son missing when she returned home. The police first refused to accept the report within 24 hours, and then the case made little progress. Five months later, the police suddenly told Christine that they had found her son and brought a large group of media to the train station to meet him.
Although Christine immediately recognized that the boy was not her son the little boy insisted repeatedly that he was her son, and the police chief also tried to persuade her that she might not recognize him after being away from him for so long.
B. They declined to accept the report within one day.
C. They questioned Christine’s mental state.
D. They provided a full investigation from the start.

A. Because he didn’t look like her physically.
B. Because he didn’t recognize her immediately.
C. Because some of his physical features didn’t fit.
D. Because the police chief told her she might not recognize him.
6. What was the fate of Christine after she insisted that the boy was not her son?
A. She was praised. B. She was released.
C. She was imprisoned. D. She was supported.
7. What can be inferred about Christine’s son from the passage?
A. He managed to escape from the psychopathic killer and lived a happy life.

C
D. The purpose of traveling has shifted to social media.
C 9. D 10. B 11. D

划线词句前文“I’ve started to hate traveling. When my friends heard me say that, they were all shocked and confused(我开始讨厌旅行了。当我的朋友们听到我这么说时,他们都很震惊和困惑)”说明朋友对作者讨厌旅行的说法感到震惊和困惑,因为作者非常热爱旅行,从而推知“because I’m an absolute travel fanatic(因为我是一个绝对的旅行fanatic)”中划线词fanatic应为“狂热者,爱好者”的意思,与C项同义。故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“It’s not that I dislike traveling itself; rather, I dislike the new definition that modern people have given to it, a fundamentally flawed understanding of tourism.(并不是我不喜欢旅行本身;相反,我不喜欢现代人给它的新定义,这是对旅游业的一种根本错误的理解。)”和第二段“Traveling is no longer about admiring scenery, marveling at the magnificent landscapes of our motherland, or experiencing new lifestyles.
C Why Are Heroes Essential? D. What Makes a Person Heroic?
A 13. C 14. B 15. D
根据文章第一段“Three young American men were on a crowded train when they encountered a heavily armed terrorist. With little regard for their personal safety, they rushed the terrorist and controlled him. Only some people seem capable of this split- second form of heroism. Why some men rise to the occasion— and others don’t— has been a bit tricky to explain.(三名年轻的美国男子在一列拥挤的火车上遇到了一名全副武装的恐怖分子。 故选A。
根据划线单词所在句“Throughout human history, attaining a position of high status or dominance among one’s peers (同龄人) has been the ticket that needs to get punched for men to attract mates and father children.(在人类历史上,在同龄人中获得高地位或支配地位一直是男性吸引伴侣和繁衍后代……的“门票”。)”可知,男性需要“门票”来吸引伴侣和繁衍后代,这里“ticket”比喻为达到某个目的所需的条件或资格,而“get punched”则比喻为“获得”这个条件或资格。选项A“Be purchased (被购买)”;选项B“Be gifted (被赠送)”;选项C“Be obtained (被获得)”;选项D“Be abandoned (被放弃)”。
根据文章最后一段“Psychologists are still at a loss to predict in advance who will heroically step up when needed.
根据文章第一段“Why some men rise to the occasion— and others don’t— has been a bit tricky to explain. Psychologists have explored this question through biological and personality psychology.(为什么有些人能在关键时刻挺身而出,而有些人却不能,这个问题一直难以解释。心理学家已通过生物学和个性心理学对这个问题进行了探究。)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要探讨了是什么因素促使一些人在关键时刻展现出英勇行为,而其他人却不能。它涉及了英勇行为的多种表现形式、生物学原因、与个性的关系以及研究的现状和未来展望。因此,文章的核心是探讨是什么造就了英雄,即是什么因素促使人们表现出英勇行为。选项D“What Makes a Person Heroic?(是什么造就了英雄?)”

A 17. E 18. D 19. F 20. G

上文“C (Consequence): Denotes the behavioral, and psychological outcomes resulting from these beliefs.(Consequence(结果):表示这些信念导致的行为和心理结果)”介绍了ABC理论中的“C”的含义,即Consequence,D选项“Different beliefs lead to varying emotional responses and behavioral consequences. (不同的信念导致不同的情绪反应和行为后果)”对其进行进一步解释,说明不同的信念会导致不同的结果,与上文语意连贯,且句中“consequences”照应上文。故选D项。
【19题详解】
上文“The ABC Theory emphasizes that it is not the activating event itself (A) but rather an individual’s beliefs and interpretations of these events (B) that give rise to their emotional and behavioral outcomes (C). (ABC理论强调,不是激发事件本身(A),而是个体对这些事件的信念和解释(B),导致了他们的情绪和行为结果(C))”强调了ABC理论的核心观点:是个人对事件的信念和解释导致了情绪和行为的结果。F选项“Thus, Ellis believed that most psychological problems stem from irrational beliefs. (因此,艾利斯认为大多数心理问题源于非理性信念)”承接上文,用艾利斯的观点进一步强化ABC理论的核心观点:个人对事件的信念和解释导致了情绪和行为的结果,即非理性信念引发心理问题。故选F项。
【20题详解】
上文“So when facing emotional distress, you can regulate your emotions by adjusting your cognitive patterns — altering your beliefs or perspectives on events to manage your emotions.(因此,当面对情绪困扰时,你可以通过调整你的认知模式来调节你的情绪——改变你对事件的信念或观点来管理你的情绪)”提出通过调整认知模式来调节情绪。G选项“What are you waiting for? Why not give it a try? (你还在等什么?为什么不试试呢?)”承接上文,鼓励读者尝试应用ABC理论来改变自己的情绪和行为,与上文语意连贯。故选G项。

I’m your student, Li Hua. Through my personal experience, I’ve found that interaction can create a democratic and harmonious classroom atmosphere. Interaction changes the roles of both teachers and students. So I enjoy your communicating with us in English class.
Apart from the interactive ways you often use, I think you can add English debating competitions to our class, which can help those who are too shy to speak English in public have an opportunity to express their ideas. You’re surely the judge of the competitions and we can listen to your conclusion. As you know, we all like your writing class. If you can give the beginning of a story to let us write its ending, we’ll improve our imagination and have more interest in English writing.
I hope my advice will be helpful to you. Thanks for reading.
Yours sincerely,

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
Looking at him a while, I took the comb and headed to the sink. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
I handed the clean comb back to Dad. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Looking at him a while, I took the comb and headed to the sink. I was very surprised that my father still remembered it after these years. Suddenly scenes from my childhood came back to me, which made my eyes misted. I turned the tap on, and then brushed the comb with a used toothbrush just like what I had done in my childhood. As I washed the comb, I couldn’t help recalling those happy days that I spent with father. After a while, the comb was pretty clean.
I handed the clean comb back to Dad. He looked at it and smiled. But this time, I noticed something different. My dad has aged. He has wrinkles next to his eyes, yet his smile is still as heartwarming as before—the smile of a father who just wants a good life for his family. Dad carefully placed his comb on top of his wallet. After so many years, I guess some things never change. And for that, Im glad.
