First, I want to tell you how proud we are. Getting into Columbia is a real proof of what a great well-rounded student you are. You should be as proud of yourself as we are. Your college years will be the most important of your life. It is in college that you will discover what learning is about. This will be the period where you go from teacher-taught to master-inspired, after which you must become self-learner. So do take each subject seriously, and even if what you learn isn’t critical for your life, the learning skills you acquire will be something you will value forever. Follow your passion in college. Take courses you think you will enjoy. Don’t be trapped by what others think or say, but make up your own mind. Most importantly, make friends and be happy. College friends are often the best in life. Pick a few friends and become really close to them -- pick the ones who are genuine to you. Don’t worry about their hobbies, grades, looks or even personalities. Start planning early -- what would you like to do? Where would you like to live? What would you like to learn? I think your plan to study fashion is good, and you should decide where you want to be, and get onto the right courses. Whether it is summer-planning, or coursework planning, or picking a major, or managing your time, you should take control of your life. I will always be there for you, but the time has come for you to be in the driver’s seat -- this is your life, and you need to be in control. Being in control feels great. Try it, and you’ll love it! College is the four years where you have: ● the greatest amount of free time ● the first chance to be independent ● the most flexibility to change ● the lowest risk for making mistakes So please treasure your college years -- make full use of your free time, become an independent thinker in control of your destiny, be brave to experiment, learn and grow through your successes and challenges. May your years at Columbia be the happiest of your life, and may you blossom into just what you dream to be. Love, Dad (&Mom) 21. What does the author advise his daughter to do in college? A. Make as many friends as possible. B. Party with friends in her free time. C. Pay no attention to whatever others think or say. D. Treasure and make the best of her college years. 22. Which of these pieces of advice is given in the article? a. think and live independently   b. learn how to learn c. choose friends with similar personalities d. be genuine and sincere to everybody e. try new things A. abd B. bce C. cde D. abe 23. From the text, we can conclude the father ________. A. is worried about his daughter B. is strict with his daughter C. is optimistic about his daughter’s future D. is sad that his daughter is leaving home B I can still remember the first day when I met my best friend. She had just moved to the neighborhood and her grandmother brought her down to meet me. I hid behind my mother and she hid behind her grandmother, scared of looking at each other. Soon, we lost the shyness and started playing with each other, riding bikes to each other’s house and having sleepovers. In 7th grade she was going through family problems. However, every summer we would sit at each other’s house, watch movies on TV and talk about all the boys we liked. It was last year that I noticed the problem. She suffered from clinical depression(临床抑郁症), and had to go to a hospital during the day. I was very sorry for her at first. But with the late night calls and meeting each other halfway up the street at midnight, we still stayed in touch. I wanted to be there for her since her new best friend left her, and I knew I still cared about her like a sister. Yesterday she came to me and said, “I never knew what a best friend was until you were the only person that would stop me from cutting myself and that ever made me feel better about myself and my problems. You didn’t know this but I was trying to kill myself that very night you called me and I was crying. I owe you so much, and you didn’t even know you were helping me. ” We both cried. And I guess a kind of lesson from my life so far is to never give up your friends. Even if they aren’t as cool as others, or people think they are crazy, they need someone there. If you leave them, you will only be very sorry. So if your friends need you, and you care about them, you should be always there for them. 24. Why did the two girls hide behind their family members when they first met? A. Because they were playing a game. B. Because they didn’t like each other. C. Because they quarreled before. D. Because they were both shy. 25. What’s the problem of my best friend? A. family problems B. having difficulty in studying C. clinical depression D. bad relationship with classmates 26. What would have happened to her friend if the author had not cared about her? A. She would have lost her new best friend. B. She would have killed herself that night. C. She would have run away from her family. D. She would have stayed in hospital for a long time. 27. What lesson can we learn from the story? A. Always care about your friends. B. Don’t care about others’ opinions. C. Never owe your friends too much. D. Try to be as cool as others. C Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds? “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida. “A person’s scale mass(质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says. “Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is. The scale can’t tell you how much of your body weight is muscle or fat, which means if your goal is to improve your fitness level, the scale is not the best tool for measuring improvements. When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease. These changes happen over weeks and months (not hours or days) so the scale is useless when tracking them. You may argue that you weigh a few pounds less after a high intensity(强度) training class. Don’t get too excited—it’s just water loss due to sweat. Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight, and variation in water content of the human body can move the scale by ten pounds or more from day to day. So ignore the scale and pay more attention to objective measurement tools like body composition. Keep in mind that if you’re exercising but gaining weight, you may actually look slimmer. 28. What can we know from Dolgan’s words from paragraph 2? A. Your weight changes little during a day. B. Your scale mass is affected by many factors. C. Your workout is not effective if you gain weight. D. Your weight is determined only by muscle and fat. 29. What will most probably happen after you exercise and eat healthy for 3 months? A. You will weigh more. B. Your muscle mass will decrease. C. Your body fat will increase. D. Your body composition will change. 30. How much water may a man weighing 150 pounds have in his body? A. 30 pounds. B. 60 pounds. C. 100 pounds. D. 140 pounds. 31. Which of the following could be the best title for the text? A. Why Do We Gain Weight? B. How to Work Out Effectively? C. What Is the Composition of Our Body? D. Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain? D Parents have widely different views on pocket money. Five new fathers were asked this question and this is how they answered. Ashish Khanna: Although many argue that pocket money helps develop children's sense of value, I don’t agree. I wouldn’t give my child any pocket money. First of all, I never got pocket money when I was a child and I seem to have a good sense of value. If my child ever wants something and I feel it is necessary, I will buy it for him. Sharad Sanghi: I wouldn’t give my child pocket money because I don't want her to form the perception (看法)\\ of “her” money and “my” money. Besides, if I refuse to buy her something that I think is bad for her, she may buy it with her pocket money secretly. I feel it also encourages children to care more about money than anything else. I don’t want my child to start judging other children by the amount of money they have. Rakesh Shah: I would give my child pocket money. I feel that children should learn to spend money intelligently and not go overboard on spending. They will learn what their limitations (局限) are and feel the difficulty when they have to pay for something that they can’t afford. Rajiv Patel: I would give my child pocket money because it is important for her to learn how to manage money. I will give her a fixed amount every month and if she spends all the money before the month is over, then she will learn a lesson and not spend money so freely. Vikram Desai: I would certainly give my child pocket money. But I would not give it to him on a weekly or monthly basis. He would have to earn it. If he helps me finish some of my jobs or helps his mother with housework, I will reward him. This helps him realize that “money does not grow on trees” and it needs hard work to earn money. 32. What do you know about Ashish Khanna? A. Pocket money helps children develop better. B. He can have much control of his child by money. C. He was given too much pocket money when young. D. He will buy something he thinks his child really needs. 33. What do Rakesh Shah and Rajiv Patel have in common? A. They allow their children to spend money freely. B. They want their children to learn to manage money. C. They teach their children the difficulty of making money. D. They ask their children to get pocket money by working. 34. According to Vikram Desai, what do children learn from earning pocket money? A. Money is not easy to get. B. Money can be got from trees. C. One can get lots of money if he/she works hard. D. Money is not so important to people nowadays. 35. Who would give his child pocket money every month? A. Ashish Khanna.B. Sharad Sanghi. C. Rakesh Shah. D. Rajiv Patel. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分 12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Sometimes our friends’ behavior can offend(冒犯) us; sometimes we can see changes they need to make — but how do we tell them? 36 It’s important to have solid evidence that there is indeed a problem. Evidence that can be agreed upon makes it easier for other people to recognize issues. 37 Psychologist Andrea Bonior suggests framing problems with “I”. Saying “I feel hurt that you spend less time with me” is less accusatory(谴责的) than “You never spend time with me!” and is focused more clearly on the impact. 38 Becoming tense might lead you to react badly and cause an argument. Bonior recommends that you should acknowledge the conversation could make you anxious. If you think about this yourself, it can help you focus on positive results. If you admit your anxiety to your friend, you will show a more human side. Another psychologist, Laura Brennan, points out how it’s important that we let go of our ego(自我) and don’t focus on the need to be proved right. This can help reduce tension. 39 Many experts recommend planning your words so that you can say things in a way that avoids conflict. However, Bonior cautions against overplanning, as this can stop you from being flexible enough to genuinely follow and participate in the discussion. Be realistic. Complicated problems are unlikely to be solved with one conversation. Consider what is possible in one discussion and that it may be harder than you initially thought. 40 A. Staying calm is vital. B. Are there any ways to make difficult conversations easier? C. Some people like to gather evidence to support their concerns. D. This will help you to set realistic goals for what you can achieve. E. Once you have proof, it’s important to highlight how it impacts us and others. F. Should we always be completely honest with our friends about their behavior? G. We can lower the potential for conflict by listening to the other person and asking questions. 第三部分语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分 15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Yesterday, my daughter had to go to work earlier than usual. Now I’m already beginning to imagine all the nice gifts under it. I think the most enjoyable thing about Christmas is always opening gift boxes. Oh, and chatting with family members too, of course. M: Ha-ha, for me, the best part of a festival is always allowing myself to have a wonderful meal without thinking about my weight. 听第8段对话,回答以下小题。 11. What’s the relationship between the speakers? A. Classmates. B. Brother and sister. C. Teacher and student. 12. How is the man’s way of describing the math problem? A. Amusing. B. Simple. C. Complicated. 13. What does Mr. Williams teach? A. Maths. B. History. C. English. 【答案】11. A 12. A 13. B 【原文】W: I have to say that you are not quite what I expected. Usually I recall you are very quiet. M: Well, I don’t like to answer questions out loud. I prefer to listen and absorb the knowledge. W: Well, you should speak out more. I think your idea is very humorous. The way you described the maths problem really makes sense to me. It made me laugh as well, so I would probably remember it better. M: Thanks. Maybe I will speak out more. In a class like Mr. Williams’, I think it’s a bit more important to listen. There are a lot about old wars and government leaders that we need to memorize. Hopefully my listening skills in this class will help us with our project. W: That’s true. I suppose I do talk more in my English and PE classes, because they require different types of thinking. 听第9段对话,回答以下小题。 14. Where are the speakers? A. At a concert. B. At a party. C. I think a lot of these people are Tom’s friends from work. You know, he is easy to get along with. But I don’t know them. Tm Molly, by the way. M: I’m Joe. Are you a friend of Tom? W: Well, actually, I’m his cousin. What about you? M: I just know him from the gym. W: Oh! I didn’t know he went to the gym. M: Yeah. He works out there all the time. What do you do, Molly? W: I am a student. I study architecture. M: Oh, really? Where do you go to school? W: I go to Lincoln University. And what do you do? M: I work for a department store. I’m a store manager. Adam Smiths. B. John Bate. C. Marco Polo. 【答案】18. A 19. B 20. C 【原文】 Kites may date back as far as 3000 years. About 25 centuries ago, kites were well known in China. These first kites were probably made of wood. They may even have been covered with silk. Early kites were built for certain uses. In ancient China, they were used to carry ropes to cross rivers. It’s said that one general flew musical kites over the enemy’s camp. The enemy fled out of great fear. In the thirteenth century, as Marco Polo wrote in his book, a trader named Adam Smith’s tied some armed soldiers to a huge kite and launched the kite with wind. By the fifteenth century, many people flew kites in Europe. Marco Polo may have brought the kite back from his visit to China. In late 1500s, kite flying was first mentioned in England in a popular book by John Bate. 第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分) 第一节(共15小题:每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 A Make the Most of College Dear Daughter, As we drove off from Columbia, I wanted to write a letter to you to tell you all that is on my mind. 24. Don’t care about others’ opinions. C. Never owe your friends too much. D. Try to be as cool as others. 【答案】24. D 25. C 26. B 27. A 【语篇导读】本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者帮助自己得了抑郁症的好朋友的经过,并从中感悟到永远不要离开和放弃你的朋友,因为你离开了朋友,你会为自己的行为感到内疚。 24. 细节理解题。根据第一段“I can still remember the first day when I met my best friend. She had just moved to the neighborhood and her grandmother brought her down to meet me. I hid behind my mother and she hid behind her grandmother, scared of looking at each other. (我仍然记得第一天见到我最好的朋友的情景。她刚搬到附近,她祖母带她来见我。我躲在母亲身后,她躲在祖母身后,不敢看对方。)”和第二段“Soon, we lost the shyness and started playing with each other, riding bikes to each other’s house and having sleepovers. (很快,我们不再害羞,开始一起玩耍,骑自行车去对方家,在对方家过夜。)”可知这两个女孩第一次见面时躲在她们的家人后面是因为她们都很害羞。故选D。 25. 细节理解题。根据第三段“It was last year that I noticed the problem. She suffered from clinical depression (临床抑郁症), and had to go to a hospital during the day. (我是在去年注意到这个问题的。她患有临床抑郁症,白天不得不去医院。)”可知作者最好的朋友患有临床抑郁症,故选C。 26. 细节理解题。根据第四段“Yesterday she came to me and said, “I never knew what a best friend was until you were the only person that would stop me from cutting myself and that ever made me feel better about myself and my problems. You didn’t know this but I was trying to kill myself that very night you called me and I was crying. I owe you so much, and you didn’t even know you were helping me. ” (昨天她对我说:“我从来不知道什么是最好的朋友,直到你成为唯一一个能阻止我割伤自己,让我对自己和自己的问题感觉更好的人。”你不知道,你打电话给我的那天晚上我想自杀,我哭了。我欠你太多了,而你甚至不知道你在帮助我。”)”可知如果作者不关心她的朋友,她的朋友那天可能会自杀,故选B。 27. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“And I guess a kind of lesson from my life so far is to never give up your friends. Even if they aren’t as cool as others, or people think they are crazy, they need someone there. If you leave them, you will only be very sorry. So if your friends need you, and you care about them, you should be always there for them. (我想从我的生活中得到的教训是永远不要放弃你的朋友。即使他们不像其他人那么酷,或者人们认为他们很疯狂,他们也需要有人在身边。如果你离开他们,你只会非常遗憾。所以,如果你的朋友需要你,而你又关心他们,你就应该永远在他们身边。)”可推知我们能从这个故事中学到要永远关心自己的朋友,故选A。 C Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds? 【答案】28. B 29. D 30. C 31. D 【语篇导读】本文是一篇说明文。文章解释了在坚持锻炼并进行健康饮食的同时,体重不降反增的原因。 28. 推理判断题。根据第二段第一句““A person’s scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says.(他说:“一个人的体表质量是肌肉、脂肪、骨头、血液,甚至是我们肺中携带的空气的组合。”)”可知,体重是肌肉、脂肪、骨骼、血液甚至肺里空气的质量总和。由此可推知,体重受多种因素影响。故选B。 29. 推理判断题。根据第三段的“When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease.(当你开始通过锻炼来改变你的身体组成——通过增加更多的肌肉量和减少体脂——你的体重可能会增加,而体脂率可能会降低。)”可推知,在坚持锻炼并进行健康饮食后,最有可能发生的是你的身体组成会发生变化。故选D。 30. 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight(水大约占一个人体重的65%到90%)”可知,人体的含水量约占人体体重的65%到90%。由此可知,体重150磅的人体内含水量应在(150×65%=97.5)磅至(150×90%=135)磅之间。故选C。 31. 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds? “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.(你是否一直在锻炼,饮食也很健康,但当你站在秤上时,秤上显示你胖了几磅?“这很正常,这并不意味着你的锻炼没有效果,”佛罗里达州迈阿密海滩的运动生理学家Jeffrey A. Dolgan说。)”和第二段的“Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.(在例行锻炼后,身体各个部位的质量百分比会立即发生15%的变化。所以,如果你在锻炼和健康饮食的同时体重增加,这可能不是你想的那种类型的体重增加。)”可知,文章主要分析了坚持锻炼并进行健康饮食后体重不降反增的原因。D项“Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain?(为什么我锻炼后体重反而增加了?)”能概括文章主要内容,最适合作本文标题。故选D。 D Parents have widely different views on pocket money. 【答案】32. D 33. B 34. A 35. D 【语篇导读】这是一篇议论文,文章介绍了五个新手父亲对于给孩子零花钱的态度和观点。 32. 细节理解题。根据第二段最后一句“If my child ever wants something and I feel it is necessary, I will buy it for him.(如果我的孩子想要什么东西,我觉得这是必要的,我会买给他)”可知,他会给孩子买他认为孩子需要的东西。故选D。 33. 推理判断题。根据第四段第二句“I feel that children should learn to spend money intelligently(我觉得孩子们应该学会明智地花钱)”和第五段中的“I would give my child pocket money because it is important for her to learn how to manage money.(我会给我的孩子零花钱,因为学习如何理财对她来说很重要)”可知,这两个人都想通过给孩子零花钱让孩子学会自己管理钱。故选B。 34. 推理判断题。根据最后一段最后一句“This helps him realize that ‘money does not grow on trees’ and it needs hard work to earn money.(这让他意识到‘钱不是从树上长出来的’,赚钱需要努力工作)”可知,Vikram Desai认为孩子们可以从挣零花钱中学习到钱并不容易得到。故选A。 35. 细节理解题。根据第五段中的“I will give her a fixed amount every month(我每个月都会给她一笔固定的钱)”可知,Rajiv Patel会每月给孩子零花钱。故选D。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分 12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Sometimes our friends’ behavior can offend(冒犯) us; sometimes we can see changes they need to make — but how do we tell them? 【答案】36. B 37. E 38. A 39. G 40. D 【语篇导读】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了可以让自己和朋友之间困难的对话变得容易的一些方法。 36. 前文“Sometimes our friends’ behavior can offend (冒犯) us; sometimes we can see changes they need to make — but how do we tell them? (有时朋友的行为会冒犯我们;有时我们可以看到他们需要做出的改变——但我们如何告诉他们)”引出对如何和朋友对话的困惑,后文段落给出了具体的建议,因此B项“Are there any ways to make difficult conversations easier? (有没有什么方法可以让困难的对话变得更容易)”符合语境,寻求让对话变得容易的方法,承前启后,其中的conversations和前文的tell呼应。故选B。 37. 前文“Evidence that can be agreed upon makes it easier for other people to recognize issues. (可以达成一致的证据使其他人更容易认识到问题)”解释需要什么样的证据,后文“Psychologist Andrea Bonior suggests framing problems with “I”. Saying “I feel hurt that you spend less time with me” is less accusatory (谴责的) than “You never spend time with me!” and is focused more clearly on the impact. (心理学家Andrea Bonior建议用“我”来定义问题。说“和我在一起的时间少了,我觉得很受伤”比说“你从来不和我在一起!”谴责的意味更少,并更清楚地关注其影响)”具体说明如何更好地表述这些证据,因此E项“Once you have proof, it’s important to highlight how it impacts us and others. (一旦你有了证据,重要的是要强调它如何影响我们和其他人)”符合语境,指出表述证据时需要注意的事项,承前启后,其中的proof和前文的Evidence呼应。故选E。 38. 空处位于段首,是段落主旨句,需统领段落内容。根据后文“Becoming tense might lead you to react badly and cause an argument. Bonior recommends that you should acknowledge the conversation could make you anxious. If you think about this yourself, it can help you focus on positive results. (变得紧张可能会导致你做出糟糕的反应,引发争吵。Bonior建议你应该承认谈话可能会让你焦虑。如果你自己思考这个问题,它可以帮助你专注于积极的结果)”可知,本段主要建议在谈话时避免紧张,以及给出如何避免紧张的方法,因此A项“Staying calm is vital. (保持冷静至关重要)”符合语境,点明要保持冷静,契合后文内容,其中的calm和后文的tense相对。故选A。 39. 空处位于段首,是段落主旨句,需统领段落内容。根据后文“Many experts recommend planning your words so that you can say things in a way that avoids conflict. However, Bonior cautions against overplanning, as this can stop you from being flexible enough to genuinely follow and participate in the discussion. (许多专家建议你计划措辞,这样你就可以用一种避免冲突的方式说话。然而,Bonior警告不要过度计划,因为这可能会阻止你足够灵活地真正跟随和参与讨论)”可知,本段主要建议避免过度计划,而要灵活地跟随和参与讨论,因此G项“We can lower the potential for conflict by listening to the other person and asking questions. (我们可以通过倾听他人并提出问题来降低发生冲突的可能性)”符合语境,点明应倾听他人并提出问题,契合后文内容,其中的listening to the other person和后文的follow呼应。故选G。 40. 前文“Complicated problems are unlikely to be solved with one conversation. Consider what is possible in one discussion and that it may be harder than you initially thought. (复杂的问题不可能一次谈话就能解决。考虑一下在一次讨论中什么是可能的,它可能比你最初想象的要困难)”指出一次谈话就解决问题是不现实的,建议只考虑一次谈话中可能的事情,因此D项“This will help you to set realistic goals for what you can achieve. (这将帮助你为你能达到的目标设定现实的目标)”符合语境,解释这样做的好处,承接前文,其中的This指代前一句的内容。故选D。 第三部分语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分 15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Yesterday, my daughter had to go to work earlier than usual.
