He is following the path our human ancestors took out of Africa about 200,000 years ago. Salopek has named his journey the Out of Eden Walk. As he walks through different countries, landscapes, and cultures, Salopek is documenting what he sees and hears. And he isn't walking alone. During each part of his walk, Paul is joined by a local guide. Along the way, he meets people from small villages, cities, and country farms. Sometimes, they give him a place to stay for a night or two. Often, his hosts share a little bit about their lives with him. The Out of Eden Walk is well-named. Besides a few rides on boats or ships, Salopek is walking the entire way. No cars. He doesn’t even ride bikes, though he does use pack animals. An important part of Salopek’s mission is to tell the stories of ordinary people. Walking gives him more time to look around and to talk to the people he encounters. He has spoken to thousands of people since his walk began. As he puts it, “I am in a seven, eight, nine-year-long conversation with total strangers.” Following a story is not new for Paul Salopek. He is a journalist. He has written for The Atlantic, the Chicago Tribune, National Geographic, and other publications. His works have earned many awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes. As a journalist, Salopek would often fly into an area to cover a story and then quickly leave again. But he felt he was missing part of the story and wanted to dig deeper. The Out of Eden Walk was born from this desire. Salopek calls it slow journalism. The goal is to deeply explore some of the major news stories of our times by talking to ordinary people who are affected. As Salopek describes it, “It is about slowing down enough to actually inhabit the stories of the day and to get to know the people who are behind the headlines.” 24. What is the Out of Eden Walk? A. It is the latest penned work of Paul Salopek. B. It is a ship journey from Africa to the tip of South America. C. It is a toured long walk across the continents taken by Paul Salopek. D. It is a new fashionable way of travelling through different countries. 25. What does Salopek think of the conversation with strangers? A. Fruitful. B. Discouraging. C. Challenging. D. Time-wasted. 26. Why did Paul Salopek start the Out of Eden Walk? A. To finish his work for the Pulitzer Prizes. B. To explore the best headlines for the journalism. C. To unearth the deeper part of the major news stories. D. To interest the readers in the ancient ordinary people. 27. What do we know about slow journalism? A. Realistic and worthwhile. B. Influential but informal. C. Humorous and relaxing. D. Efficient and meaningful. C Comedian Sarah Silverman recently joined forces with bestselling writers Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey against two unlikely opponents: ChatGPT’s creator OpenAI and Meta Platforms. The writers filed a copyright infringement (侵犯) case in early July in which they claim their copyrighted books were used without their permission as part of training dataset for ChatGPT and similar AI models. Here’s a critical point to remember: AIs like ChatGPT don’t parrot books word for word. They generate new content based on patterns learned from the training data. The specific words and sentences formed aren’t direct copies from copyrighted books, blurring the lines of traditional infringement. I have a vision there’s a slim chance this case will hold up, but the final call is in the hands of the courts. The cornerstone of human-learning is imitation (模仿). The nature of intelligence — whether biological or artificial rests on the ability to recognize patterns and apply them in innovative ways. AI, such as ChatGPT, operates similarly. It learns from its environment — in this case, the extensive datasets of text — and imitates patterns it finds. That’s how it can compose a strikingly human-like string of text despite having no consciousness or creativity. The current case challenges this understanding, claiming that AI’s method of learning breaks copyright law. Some publishers provide a compensation (补偿) strategy. But there are potential issues with this approach. First, its being in effect might pose enormous, even unovercome challenges. The large scale of data that AI models like ChatGPT take in for training thousands of books, millions of articles, and more makes it impractical to track down every single copyright holder and negotiate terms for use. This could result in high expenses for AI developers, potentially preventing innovation and destroying public models. But here’s an interesting paradox (悖论) to consider: The victory of writers against formal AI service providers may not end the issue. Far from it. The outcome of this unfolding drama could be more than a simple courtroom win or loss; it could fundamentally redefine the boundaries of artificial intelligence and copyright law. 28. What may be the result of the case in the author’s view? A. AI may get away with it. B. Writers may gain huge benefit. C. AI’s works may be banned. D. Meta platforms may be closed. 29. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The reliance of AI on humans. B. The application of AI’s imitation. C. The role of AI in human learning. D. The common feature of AI and human brain. 30. What will the compensation strategy bring about? A. The ceasing of AI development. B. Lack of sustainable quality data. C. The protests from the publishers. D. Financial burdens for AI developers. 31. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph? A. To clarify his or her stand. B. To present an example. C. To make some comparison. D. To add background information. D Researchers have discovered that limiting a certain enzyme (酶) can have a dramatic impact in protecting against the effects of Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔兹海默症). The finding could lead to a new class of drugs that fight the disease. Much of the historical research into Alzheimer’s disease(AD) has focused on plaques (斑块) that form in the brain, which recently, though, have been found not likely to be the direct cause of it. In seeking another way forward, a group of British researchers turned to an Australian study which showed having the gene for the production of an enzyme known as PDE4B was identified as a risk factor for developing Alzheimer’s. With the intention of investigating how PDE4B might affect the brain, the UK team genetically modified (改造) mice with Alzheimer’s to reduce PDE4B activity. The results are astonishing. First, the mice with Alzheimer’s and normal PDE4B expression showed memory loss in the sense of direction, a distinctive characteristic of AD. But those who had the genetic modification to have less PDE4B activity showed no damage at all. The team also observed that inflammation (炎症), another hallmark of AD, decreased to some extent in the brains of mice with less PDE4B activity, compared to those with more of the enzyme. Because all of these effects were found in the mice that already had Alzheimer’s but had significant improvement in symptoms, the researchers say that further investigation into how to limit PDE4B in human patients with the condition could lead to new treatment pathways. “These results offer real hope for the development of new treatments that will benefit patients with Alzheimer’s disease in the future,” said Neil Dawson, a co- author of the study. “The next stage is to test whetherPDE4B- limiting drugs have similar beneficial effects in the AD mouse model, to test their potential effectiveness in human Alzheimer’s disease.” 32. How did the British researchers get the inspiration? A. By figuring out the direct cause of AD. B. By going over much historical research. C. By referring to a previous Australian study. D. By breaking down PDE4B in the AD mouse. 33. What can be learnt about PDE4B? A. Its activity promotes the sense of direction. B. It might bring about the development of AD. C. It is processed by a certain enzyme in the brain. D. It will be investigated to reduce mice brain activity. 34. What does the underlined word “hallmark” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Cause. B. Feature. C. Principle. D. Finding. 35. What do the last two paragraphs mainly talk about? A. The future research focus. B. The existing research background. C. The probable research limitation. D. The practical research application. Traffic Regulation and Accident Prevention We live in a remarkable time, and many of the once fatal diseases can now be cured with modern medicine and surgery. 36 Expectations of life have greatly increased. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the incredible killing of men, women and children on the roads. Man fights against the motor-car. It is a never-ending battle which man is losing. 37 Nothing can seriously increase your risk of potentially fatal car accidents other than speeding and failing to pay due attention to weather conditions. 38 There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man’s very worst qualities. Usually quiet and pleasant people, when they are behind the steering wheel, will become unrecognizable. They are impolite, aggressive, self-willed like two-year-old, completely selfish. All their hidden frustrations, disappointments, and jealousy seem to be caused by driving. 39 It’s all for his own convenience. Due to a serious tragedy, the city is almost uninhabitable and the huge parking lot makes the town ugly. The destruction of rural areas and the annual mass killings are just a statistic, easily forgotten. With regard to driving, the laws of some countries are not strict and even the strictest are not strict enough. Traffic rules are for everyone to follow under any circumstances, and no one can make an exception unless you make a joke of your own life. Universally accepted standards can only have a significant beneficial on the incidence of accidents. Governments should develop safety codes for manufacturers. 40 These measures may sound cruel. However, if these measures result in a reduction in the loss of life every year, they should certainly not be considered serious. After all, the world belongs to humans, not cars. A. There are five reasons for the accident and you are guilty. B. Every year thousands of people are horribly killed, and we sit still and let it happen. C. Surprisingly, society should smile at the driver and forgive him. D. Someone has rightly said that when a person is sitting behind the steering wheel, his car becomes an extension of his personality. E. All advertisements that emphasize power and performance should be banned. F. It is time to develop a universal norm to reduce this senseless waste of human life. G. It is almost certain that one day a cure will be found for the rest of the diseases. Being good at something and having a passion for it are not enough. We were on vacation, just me, my husband, and our two kids, out for a nice, safe, socially distanced week away. We went to a popular place called Diana's Baths, where the water falls off a series of flat rocks up the mountain. The baths were full of families, so we made our way to one of the upper levels of rock to keep our distance. Both where we sat and down below, the water fell down and into small pools, where kids in swimsuits were playing water around. I was frightened as I saw my two boys jump between the smooth rocks. I told them to stay away from all those edges. But I soon relaxed, and we were all having fun, laughing in the pools. Suddenly, I turned and saw my son Wyatt sitting down between two rocks in fast-moving water. I shouted at him to get out. He called back something that I couldn't hear, and then he disappeared over the edge. All I remember from the moments after was screaming, over and over, like a prayer, “Somebody help my son!” I didn't even know what help he needed, because I couldn't force myself to look. My husband was already jumping down the rocks. I finally looked. Wyatt was sitting up-he was alive. My biggest fear was gone. As I held my younger son, Jed, close, I heard another woman scream. “That child just went over the waterfall!” she shouted at her husband. “We are leaving!” They walked away, never even looking back to see whether our child was OK. It was about 4 meters from the top of the waterfall to the pool below, which was filled with huge rocks. Wyatt had fallen on his back, straight onto the rocks. That's what Lisa told us. We didn't know her name was Lisa at that point. All we knew was that while everyone else looked on from a distance, too afraid or unbothered to help, Lisa didn't hesitate. Later, Lisa told me that she was a nurse.________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The rescue team finally came.________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 试卷第1页,共3页 原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究!13 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$………………○……………… ………………○……………… ………………○……………… … 学校:______________姓名:_____________班级:_______________考号:______________________ 绝密★考试结束前 2024-2025学年高二英语上学期期中模拟卷 (考试时间:120分钟 试卷满分:150分) 注意事项: 1. 1. Later, Lisa told me that she was a nurse.______________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The rescue team finally came._______________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 试题 第7页(共10页) 试题 第8页(共10页) 试题 第1页(共12页) 试题 第2页(共12页) 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 绝密★考试结束前 2024-2025学年高二英语上学期期中模拟卷 (考试时间:120分钟 试卷满分:150分) 注意事项: 1. 1. 24. C 25. A 26. C 27. 28. A 29. D 30. D 31. 32. C 33. B 34. B 35. G 37. B 38. D 39. C 40. In Shandong Province, China’s major grain producer, the Sinograin (中粮集团) grain storage site is equipped with 4,500 high-definition cameras and 280,000 temperature sensors 62 (ensure) that the stock (储备) is in the best condition. Data shows that during China’s 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020) , about 13 million tons of food had been saved 63 (year) after production. We cannot end hunger 64 we do not deal with the high levels of food loss and waste. Cooperation and innovations (创新) in business models, technologies and digital solutions could all contribute 65 reducing food loss and waste. 56. the 57. global 58. held 59. is 60. has made 61. equipment 62. to ensure 63. yearly 64. if/when 65. to 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 故填the。 57. 本句的主语是the loss of only one percentage,因此谓语动词用单数。故填is。 60. contribute to为固定搭配,意为“贡献”,to为介词,故填to。 Dear Bob, ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 【答案】One possible version: Dear Bob, Knowing from your letter that you are interested in robots, I am writing to share my wonderful experience with you. What attracts me most is a companion robot that is exactly like a human being. It can walk and talk just like a person does. The companion robot is supposed to be a friend for people living alone, which also provides people with a lot of comfort and enrich their lives. In addition, the robot could help monitor the health condition of people real-time in case any emergency arises . Personally, I do see the companion robot as a solution to people’s problems. I wish I could visit the robot exhibition with you next time. 感兴趣:be interested in→have an interest in, be keen on 吸引:attract→appeal to, fascinate 此外:in addition→moreover, besides, what’s more 就个人而言:personally→from my point of view, in my opinion 2. Personally, I do see the companion robot as a solution to people’s problems. Personally, I do consider that the companion robot is a solution to people’s problems. 【点睛】[高分句型1] What attracts me most is a companion robot that is exactly like a human being. (运用了what引导主语从句、that引导限制性定语从句) [高分句型2] The companion robot is supposed to be a friend for people living alone, which also provides people with a lot of comfort and enrich their lives. It was last August. Later, Lisa told me that she was a nurse.________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The rescue team finally came.________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】Later, Lisa told me that she was a nurse. In fact, by the time I climbed down the rocks and my husband pulled Wyatt out of the water, she had already called 911. She put a red, white, and blue towel under Wyatt's head. She told us to keep him still and on his back in case he had injured his bones. I finally had time to ask her name. “Lisa,” she said. “And I'm not leaving you.” The rescue team finally came. They took Wyatt out of the park to the nearest hospital. Wyatt had three broken bones and a wound in lung—injuries that sound terrible but recover on their own. No sooner had I known that Wyatt was going to be OK, than my thoughts fell to Lisa. If she had not stepped up, would someone else have done so? Perhaps. But it was her. She was the one who went toward the unthinkable instead of turning away. 站出来:step up/come forward②. No sooner had I known that Wyatt was going to be OK, than my thoughts fell to Lisa. If she had not stepped up, would someone else have done so?(运用了if引导的虚拟语气) 试卷第1页,共3页 原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究!2 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2024-2025学年高二英语上学期期中模拟卷 参考答案 (考试时间:120分钟 试卷满分:150分) 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分 30 分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 1—5 BAACB 第二节(共15小题;每小题1.5分,满分22.5分) 6—10 BACBC 11—15 ACBAC 16—20 ABACB 第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 21.
