However,Ethiopia is isolated (隔离) by dry lowlands, which are unsuitable for enset to grow. And the procedures for enset raising and preparing require special knowledge. Therefore, despite its wild relatives distributing across Africa, enset is only used as a crop in Ethiopia and has never been widely adopted elsewhere.
Using agricultural surveys and modeling work, scientists found the crop could potentially feed more than 100 million people and boost food security in Ethiopia and other African countries.
Study researcher Dr.James Borrell, of the Royal Botanic Gardens, said planting enset as an alternative crop for tough times could help support food security.“It's got some really unusual characteristics that make it absolutely unique as a crop,” he said.Reaching ten meters tall, as few as 15 enset plants can feed a person for a year. Also, it has flexible harvest times, stores well, and is relatively drought and disease tolerant. All these features have earned it the name,“the tree against hunger”.
There is growing interest in seeking new plants to feed the world.Nearly half of all the calories we eat come from three species—rice, wheat, and corn.“We need to diversify the plants we use globally as a staple because all our eggs are in a very small basket at the moment,” said Dr.Borrell.
4.What can we know about enset?
A.It is widely consumed in Ethiopia.
B.Its stems and roots can serve as a staple.
C.It is mainly grown in dry lowlands.
D.It is distributed throughout the world.
5.What affects the wide adoption of enset?
A.Lack of related knowledge.
B.Poor quality of farmland.
C.Low productivity.
D.Strict storage condition.
6.Which aspect of enset is talked about in Paragraph 5?
A.Its advantages. B.Its edibility.
C.Its variety. D.Its distribution.
7.What does Dr.Borrell mean in the last paragraph?
A.People are fed up with existing staples.
B.A world of biodiversity is needed.
C.Crop varieties should be increased.
D.Food security has been addressed.

(2024·武汉市调研考试)Have you ever suddenly developed an appetite from a passing glance at a freeway billboard featuring a brightly colored cheeseburger, or decided to step into a candy or ice cream store displaying a window full of lively shades and hues(色调)of sweet treats? If so,you are in good company.Unless we are medically restricted or strictly dieting,we are not likely to resist inviting fare simply because we recognize the lack of nutritional value.
Devina Wadhera and Elizabeth D.Capaldi-Phillips in A Review of Visual Cues Associated with Food on Food Acceptance and Consumption recognize the impact of sensory cues(信号)on food consumption and enjoyment, and the potential they have to promote healthy eating behavior. They cite previous research providing some interesting examples of the visual impact of different color schemes (方案)on taste and food enjoyment. They note that pink food on a white plate was considered sweeter and more flavorful than the same food on a black plate.Apparently, we consume food with more of our senses than we realize.
So when we're faced with so many appealing food choices and given the rainbow of colors around us,is there any way to control our appetite?Thankfully, some research says yes.
Oliver Genschow demonstrated that when it comes to eating less, colors impact consumption. They specifically researched the effect of the color red. They found that people ate fewer pretzels when using a red plate,as opposed to white or blue, and drank less from a red cup than a blue cup. They suggested that the color red reduces food and drink intake by functioning as a stop signal.
But when it comes to healthy eating, instead of putting on a pair of sunglasses to block the inviting hues of food cues, consider the value of discipline.Healthy eating involves intentional choices, not mindless responses to sensory cues. And before you invest in much red tableware to slim down, remember that what goes onto the plates is much more important.
8.What may be a major reason for us to refuse eye-catching food?
A.The shortage of nutrition.
B.The rich color of fine foods.
C.The doctor's instructions.
D.Advertisements everywhere.
9.What might be dealt with in A Review of Visual Cues Associated with Food on Food Acceptance and Consumption?
A.Benefits of different color schemes.
B.Interesting examples of food service.
C.The potential to promote food consumption.
D.Effects of sensory cues on eating behavior.
10.What does the author suggest people do in the last paragraph?
A.Follow the sensory response.
B.Make food choices sensibly.
C.Wear sunglasses to block colors.
D.Avoid colorful food intentionally.
11.What is the best title for the text?
A.How Can People Control Their Appetite?
B.How Are People Tricked by Color Schemes?
C.How Do Colors Impact Food's Appeal and Appetite?
D.How Do Bright Colors Make Food More Appealing?

UNIT 4 Looking good, feeling good
Feeling overloaded by your to-do list can certainly make you unhappy, but new research suggests that more free time might not be the elixir many of us dream it could be.
In a new study released last week, researchers analyzed data from two large-scale(大规模的)surveys about how Americans spend their time.Together, the surveys included more than 35,000 respondents. The researchers found that people with more free time generally had higher levels of subjective well-being—but only up to a point.People who had around two hours of free time a day generally reported they felt better than those who had less time. But people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally said they felt worse. So ultimately the free-time “sweet spot” might be two to three hours per day, the findings suggest.
Part of finding this seemingly tricky “sweet spot” has to do with how people spend the extra time they have, the researchers behind the new study argue. They conducted several smaller online experiments. In one experiment, they asked participants to imagine having 3.5 to 7 free hours per day. They were asked to imagine spending that time doing“productive”things (like exercising)or to imagine doing “unproductive” activities (like watching TV).Study participants believed their well-being would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day—but only if they used it unproductively.Though that experiment was hypothetical, which is one limitation of the new research, it's certainly in line with other research showing that being in a state of “flow” can be good for people's mental health.
Of course, what feels “productive” is up to you. Many traditionally productive or purposeful activities can be easy and fun.Engaging in a bit of low-key cardio, like walking and jogging, can help reduce stress.Free-time activities like reading or cooking are also known to put people in a state of “flow”.
1.What does the underlined word “elixir” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Magic solution.
B.Physical power.
C.Psychological test.
D.Relaxed atmosphere.
2.How did the researchers carry out the new study?
A.By doing large-scale online surveys.
B.By giving interviews and mental tests.
C.By comparing respondents' backgrounds.
D.By conducting experiments and analyzing data.
3.What is a distinct finding of the new research?
A.Doing unproductive things leads to unhappiness.
B.Being in a state of “flow” benefits people's mental health.
C.Men's well-being is positively related to the free time they have.
D.How people spend their free time affects their sense of well-being.
4.What is the focus of the last paragraph?
A.The importance of reducing stress.
B.Easy and fun activities to kill time.
C.Further explanation of being productive.
D.The benefits of engaging in free-time activities.
(2024·福州市高中毕业班质检)We all have things that we want to achieve in our lives—getting into the better shape, building a successful business, raising a wonderful family, and so on. 1 At least, this is how I approached my life goals until recently.
What I'm starting to realize, however,is that when it comes to actually getting things done and making progress in the areas that are important to you, there is a much better way to do things. It all comes down to the difference between goals and systems. 2 Your system is the writing schedule that you follow each week. Now for the really interesting question:If you completely ignored your goals and focused only on your system, would you still get results?I think you would.
3 In the last 12 months,I've written over 115,000 words. The typical book is about 50,000 to 60,000 words,so I have written enough to fill two books this year. All of this is such a surprise because I never set a goal for my writing.I didn't measure my progress in relation to some benchmark. 4 I never said,“I want to write two books this year.” What I did focus on was writing one article every Monday and Thursday.I focused on my system and the process of doing the work. And after sticking to that schedule for 11 months, the result was 115,000 words. In the end,I enjoyed the same(or perhaps better)results.
Goals are good for planning your progress and systems are good for actually making progress.Goals can provide directions and even push you forward in the short term, but eventually a well-designed system will always win.Having a system is what matters. 5
A.None of this is to say that goals are useless.
B.If you're a writer, your goal is to write a book.
C.Forget about predicting the future and build a system.
D.I never set a word count goal for any particular article.
E.Committing to the process is what makes the difference.
F.And for most of us, the path to those things starts by setting a specific goal.
G.As an example,I just added up the total word count for the articles I've written this year.

The New Year holidays were fast approaching, and we had ordered many gifts online. So, when the doorbell rang,I was sure some of the packages had arrived.I ran to the door and swung it open, but no one was there.I sensed something and looked down, only to find a beautiful calico kitten (花斑猫) sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes. There was no way that she could have rung the doorbell by herself, was there?
We figured that someone had found the kitten somewhere and left her there, and then rang the doorbell and ran away. They accurately guessed we would welcome an additional family member and take care of her.
My husband called her our little angel,so we named her accordingly. She had a calm aura (气质) about her as she walked straight into our home and hearts, fitting in perfectly. It seemed as if she was always meant to be in this big house with us.She was an old soul and turned out to be the perfect companion.Always by my side, she was more like a puppy than a kitten.Wise beyond her years, she enjoyed wandering through the tunnels and mysterious rooms as much as I did, but with much less fear.Angelica the calico was courageous.
So, I took a page from her book and decided to be brave too. There was an underground stone cellar(地窖) I had been eager to explore. The only way in was down a rickety(摇晃的) ladder to its murky depths.I guessed it was an old root cellar, probably twelve feet deep.
I had promised my husband that I wouldn't explore dangerous areas unless he or someone else was around.Though I knew I was stretching it,I figured that Angelica would count as my companion.I was ready to explore this cellar, and so was she.
I equipped myself with a good flashlight and warm clothes, and carefully started down the rickety ladder while Angelica was looking down at me from above.Faint crack and sudden crash were what I could remember.

根据第二段中的“researchers analyzed data from two large-scale surveys”和第三段中的“They conducted several smaller online experiments.”
根据第三段中的“Part of finding this seemingly tricky‘sweet spot’ has to do with how people spend the extra time they have”可知,新的研究的一个独特发现是人们如何度过空闲时间决定了他们是否快乐,故D项正确。]
根据最后一段首句中的“what feels‘productive’ is up to you”和后面列举的具体活动可知,尾段内容主要是对productive的进一步解释说明。]
provide sth for sb或 provide sb with sth“给某人提供某事物”,是固定搭配。故填for。
故填was launched。]
动词intend后常接动词不定式,be intended to do sth“打算做某事”,故填to inspire。]
分析句子结构可知,“attracting 60,000 teams involving millions of students and teachers”在句中作状语,且空格前后内容之间为并列关系,故填并列连词and。]
根据时间状语In the past decade可知,此处应用现在完成时,又因GNHD与add是主动关系,故填has added。
10.achievement/achievements [考查名词。
I woke up with pieces of the rotting, broken ladder lying around me on the stone cellar floor. My flashlight was broken,as were my eyeglasses and my phone.I turned on the phone and it lit up! Sadly, however,no signal. If only I could get the still-functioning phone up through the door, it might connect to the Internet, so I could shout at Siri from down below for help.In the daylight, I could make out Angelica was mewing at me from above.
It seemed my companion, Angelica, was my last hope. She kept her eye on me.Waving the phone,I instructed, “Angelica! Catch it!” With a deep breath and a silent prayer,I cast the phone upward.Miraculously, Angelica managed to catch it with her paws as it shot through the door and laid it right by the entrance.Once it connected to the Internet, I yelled at Siri to call the emergency services. With them on the line, I screamed out my situation. When the heavy footsteps came near, I knew I was saved.I no longer wonder if it was Angelica who rang the doorbell that day.
