Learning objectives:
At the end of this lesson, students are able to:
1. To listen to a conversation about the scientific experience;
2. To extract specific information while listening and complete missing information;
3. To describe the scientific experience in listening;
4. To share the scientific experience you participate in;
5. To make a presentation on a scientific phenomenon.
Lead-in:
Look at the photos below, and discuss in groups what these activities have to do with science.
Lead-in:
a giant dish whisper
I think the dish in this exhibition is related to sound.
Maybe the boy is whispering into the smaller circle and the dish can make his voice louder.
Lead-in:
a piano keyboard play with feet
This looks like a piano you play with your feet.
Maybe it shows how sound works.
Lead-in:
a blue screen bright lights
I'm not sure what this one shows, but it must be about light or eyesight.
Lead-in:
a hall of mirrors reflect
It is a hall of mirrors. Maybe it has to do with the principles of reflection.
Lead-in:
a white light
cast shadows
in the color of the rainbow
This is probably an experiment involving the composition of light.
Pre-listening:
Using the photos, try to predict the answers to the questions.
1. Where are the people in the conversation going to go?
2. What kind of place is it, and what does it focus on?
3. What kinds of things can you do there?
Pre-listening:
Using the photos, try to predict the answers to the questions.
1. Where are the people in the conversation going to go?
A science museum/centre.
2. What kind of place is it, and what does it focus on?
A place for delight, education and inspiration. It focuses on letting visitors experience science.
3. What kinds of things can you do there?
Try different interactive(adj.互动的) activities to experience sound, light, reflection and so on.
While-listening:
Write down the letters (A—E) for the photos in the order that you hear them.

While-listening:
Predict by using pictures
One way to get more out of your listening is to predict what you will hear. Using the pictures provided and the knowledge you already have, you can guess the kinds of information you should listen for. At times, you may even be able to guess exactly what will be talked about. This will help you focus better when listening, making your listening more effective.
Listening tip
While-listening:
Photo A: A giant dish; when you speak into it, it ________ the sound back and _______________. You can use it to speak in a ________ to someone 17 metres away.
Photo B: A giant ________________ that you can use your feet to play. Instead of playing the sounds of a piano, it plays the voices of ________________.

Judy: Oh, I'm so sorry that you were ill and couldn't come with us on
our field trip. How are you feeling now? Better?
Bill: Much better, thanks. But how was it?
Judy: Wonderful! I especially liked an area of the museum called
Light Games. it was really cool. They had a hall of mirrors
where I could see myself reflected thousands of times!
Bill: A hall of mirrors can be a lot of fun. What else did they have?
Audio Script
Judy: Well, they had an experiment where we looked at a blue screen for a while, and then suddenly we could see tiny bright lights moving around on it. You'll never guess what those bright lights were!
Bill: Come on, tell me!
Judy: They were our own blood cells. For some reason, our eyes play tricks on us when we look at a blue screen, and we can see our own blood cells moving around like little lights! But there was another thing I liked better. I stood in front of a white light, and it cast different shadows of me in every color of the rainbow!
Bill: Oh, I wish I had been there. Tell me more!
Audio Script
Judy: Well, they had another area for sound. They had a giant piano keyboard that you could use your feet to play. But then, instead of playing the sounds of a piano, it played the voices of classical singers! Then they had a giant dish, and when you spoke into it, it reflected the sound back and made it louder. You could use it to speak in a whisper to someone 17 metres away.
Bill: It all sounds so cool. I wish I could have gone with you
Judy: I know, but we can go together this weekend. I'd love to go there again!
Bill: That sounds like a great idea!
Post-listening:
1. The conversation is about the City of Science and Industry, a museum in Paris. Would you like to go to this museum? Why or why not?
Yes. I can learn a lot about science and it can broaden my horizons.
What can you do in the City of Science and Industry?
What do you like most about it?
2. Are there any museums like this in China? What other interesting museums are there?
Yes. For example, there is the China Science and Technology Museum in Beijing and the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum.
Have you ever been to such a museum in China?
Where is it?
What is it like?
What did you do there?
Today, I want to talk to you about a very strange phenomenon called a non-Newtonian fluid. You can make it easily using equal parts of water and cornflour, like I have here. A non-Newtonian fluid is strange because you can pour it like a liquid, but if you put any pressure on it, it suddenly becomes hard as concrete. In fact, it becomes hard enough to stand on. Then, as soon as you take the pressure off, it becomes a liquid again. This shows that it is possible that something can exist as a liquid and a solid at the same time.

Today, I’m going to talk about wind.
In winter, when you open the door suddenly, you will feel the strong sudden wind coming into the room.
How does it happen? Well, there is warm air inside the room. And the warm air is light so it goes up. When we open the door, cold air comes in. And it flows on the surface of the floor because it is heavier than the hot air.
As a result, cool air or cold air takes the place of the warm air. We call this circulation of air wind. All in all, wind occurs when there are temperature differences.

Signs That You Are Growing
Growing is a lifelong process. Here are the signs that show that you are actually growing and not getting stuck in the process.
____36____
Often, we see how badly people look when they get overly upset due to unimportant things. So the first sign of maturity (成熟) is letting the small things go and not getting angry over a tiny detail that didn’t go as you planned.
You start forgiving and understanding other people
When we are young, we are often unforgiving. As we mature, we are better able to understand the world beyond black and white. ____37____. It enables us to look beyond the obvious and let go of simple judgments. We begin to understand better that others have complex (复杂的) lives and personalities, and so we become more willing to forgive their mistakes.
You always complete things that matter
Immature people don’t know when to commit (承诺) themselves and their energy or resources are always not well employed. ____38____. In this way, they can often keep their promises and honor their commitments.
You accept the possibility of being wrong
____39____. They are always able to accept the possibility that they are wrong, that they don’t know something, because there is always more to learn.
Being mature is knowing that you are always growing up. You are never done learning and developing. This means that you don’t set yourself up as the highest authority. ____40____.
A. You follow the crowd
B. You let the small things go
C. Instead, mature people focus on completing things that matter
D. Immature and mature people can both have plans for their lives
E. Rather, you open your mind to other ideas and new possibilities
F. Becoming more understanding is a sign of strength, not weakness
G. Mature people appear more confident, however, they are not overconfident
B 37. F 38. C 39. G 40. E
根据本段内容“Often, we see how badly people look when they get overly upset due to unimportant things. So the first sign of maturity (成熟) is letting the small things go and not getting angry over a tiny detail that didn’t go as you planned.(通常,我们看到人们因为不重要的事情而过度沮丧时的样子是多么糟糕。所以成熟的第一个标志就是让小事过去,不要因为没有按计划进行的小细节而生气)”可知,本段提到“让小事过去,不要因为没有按计划进行的小细节而生气”,即建议不计较小事情。故B项“你不计较小事”适合作本节的小标题。故选B。
【37题详解】
根据标题“You start forgiving and understanding other people(你开始原谅和理解别人)”;空前“As we mature, we are better able to understand the world beyond black and white.(随着我们的成熟,我们能够更好地理解非黑即白的世界)”及空后“It enables us to look beyond the obvious and let go of simple judgments.(它使我们能够超越显而易见的事物,放弃简单的判断)”可知,本段的主旨是理解他人,更好地理解非黑即白的世界,F选项中understanding对应标题中understanding。
根据空前“Immature people don’t know when to commit (承诺) themselves and their energy or resources are always not well employed.(不成熟的人不知道什么时候该承诺自己,他们的精力和资源总是没有得到很好的利用)”及空后“In this way, they can often keep their promises and honor their commitments.(通过这种方式,他们通常可以遵守他们的承诺和履行他们的承诺)”可知,上文提到了不成熟的人的做法,可知本句是在说明成熟的人会怎么做。C选项中mature people与上文Immature people相对应。
根据本节的小标题“You accept the possibility of being wrong(你接受错误的可能性)”及空后“They are always able to accept the possibility that they are wrong, that they don’t know something, because there is always more to learn.(他们总是能够接受自己错了的可能性,接受自己不知道的可能性,因为总有更多的东西需要学习)”可知,后文提到了某种人能够接受自己错了的可能性,认识到有更多的东西需要学习,G选项中Mature people对应后文They。
根据空前“You are never done learning and developing. This means that you don’t set yourself up as the highest authority.(你永远不会停止学习和发展。这意味着你没有把自己设定为最高权威)”可知,上文提到了“没有把自己设定为最高权威”,故本句与上文构成转折,指出这种特性会导致的结果:你会敞开心扉接受其他的想法和新的可能性。故E项“相反,你会敞开心扉接受其他的想法和新的可能性”符合语境。故选E。
